Mike Yardy hit 98 not out as the Surrey were defeated by Sussex in the C and G trophy group match at the Brit Oval. Surrey scored respectable score of 272 for 9 but they were unable to defend this score as Yardy took the game away from the brown caps

Surrey made a good start with Benning and Batty putting 83 for the first wicket, with Benning making 47 from just 29 not out. Batty and Butcher then took the score to 138, when Batty fell for 53. Mark Butcher also completed his half century and with Ramprakash and Batty hitting scores in the thirties, Surrey looked in a strong position.

However the rest of the batting failed as Clarke, Azhar Mahmood and Stuart Walters all scoring in single figures. Surrey still managed a respectable score of 272 for 9 from their 50 overs.

Sussex had a poor start to their innings as Azhar Mahmood removed both openers to leave the Sharks reeling at 7 for 2. Adams and Goodwin added 51, to start the recovery. Goodwin was then joined by Yardy and together they took the game out of Surrey’s hands with a stand of 176. Goodwin fell 89 when he was bowlers by James Benning. Hopkinson also fell before the end for 21, but Yardy saw Sussex home with 98 not out as they won by five wickets, with 1 over and 4 balls remaining.
