By jonnyboy21 June 20 2008 Jonnyboy21 reports from Lord's as Billy Godleman and The Diggler see off the Sussex Sharks to steer Middlesex to their fifth win out of Five in the 20/20 Cup. The Quarter Finals are now in touching distance. Victories over the Seasiders are fairly rare so read on to hear how this one was achieved.
Middlesex Crusaders made it a stunning 5 wins out of 5 games with a comprehensive victory over the hapless Sussex Sharks. After winning the toss and somewhat surprisingly electing to bat, England International Strauss and Under-19 International compatriot Billy Godleman got the "Pinks" off to a fine start, Godleman in particular playing some fine, expansive shots on his way to 58 off just 34 balls, with 9 boundaries, With a fine crowd and atmosphere firmly in place, allegedly bigger than the two previous crowds although I was not convinced, and the score on 76, Strauss left himself stranded in an unnecessary run-out. Henderson pinch-hit a few balls before completely misjudging a ball from Yardy and being bowled. Yardy was probably the Sharks' best bowler, taking the 3 prized wickets of Godleman, Morgan and Henderson. The two Irishmen kept the innings going and the runs flowing, Udal and Murto finished the innings together but Murto made somewhat of a mess of it conceding two dot balls in the last over, which Shaggy did not look best pleased at.
Chris Nash & Murray Goodwin came out after the short interval in search of a first victory to give them some distant hope of qualifying for the knockout stages. But they made far from the perfect start, Nash departing having faced five balls, caught behind off the sharp bowling of ex-Surrey bowler Tim Murtagh. Dwayne Smith, in at 3, smashed one ball for six, but soon departed, leaving the Sharks in a most unhelpful situation. Former Zimbabwe International Murray Goodwin made a fight of it with his captain Chris Adams, but when he lost his Captain the rot started, the concession of 5 wickets off just 27 runs. From then Sussex never looked like winning, and the crowd cheered the "Pinks" on to an inevitable victory, despite valiant efforts from Andrew Hodd and Robin Martin-Jenkins. They managed to avoid losing all their wickets at the end of the innings, finishing 38 runs short giving them a depressing fifth loss, and a resounding fifth victory for the gallant Crusaders.
