Forum. I Love it
By Barmy Kev
October 3 2008
An entertaining forum packed with people and humour. Oh, plus questions and answers that were, amazingly, mainly cricket based. I Lovett led the way as we were updated with new signings and confirmed what we may have thought we knew already, but enjoyed hearing from the people in charge.

INTRODUCTION

I Lovett as chairman of Middlesex chaired the meeting. Chris Lowe (not wearing tie) has stepped down. He introduced panel. Vinny Shaggy (Raptourous applause) Toby (Muted applause).

He started saying that his mother having sense of humour with surname Lovett, his initial being I. He then told a joke about a bungled bank robbery.

Rather than the Embers prolonged style of describing season Ian summarised it in order as "Poor- Fantastic- Poor- Very Good".

Before questions the recently demised Jay Bailey (RIP) was remembered and a short silence was held in his memory.

QUESTIONS

All Rounder needed?

Was agreed needed and looking for one, availability difficult. We are also looking for a fast bowler. Nannes will not return.

General Committee too large/ don’t go to away games-(Gentlemen drinking club)?

Proposal to reduce committee like Durham. Need SGM to approve change.Other counties take no more committee members to away games than us. We are represented at all games

Stanford/ Champions league- how much money at stake and are we going to invest this in players?

(This was my question. I hesitated at first due to shock of being asked. Then I inadvertently referred to Champs league as ICL). Shaggy said he will get all prize money. (LOL) Antigua-$100,000 for going.$180,000 for beating Trinidad India-$500,00 for going. 1st place $2 1/2 mill. Last place$200,000 No idea where playing in India. All prize money invested in club Squad announced. Shaun Udal (c), Neil Carter, Neil Dexter, Steven Finn, Billy Godleman, Tyron Henderson, Ed Joyce, Murali Kartik, Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan, Tim Murtagh, David Nash ( applause), Alan Richardson, Ben Scott, Andrew Strauss. The announcement of signings of Dexter, Carter mentioned

Director of Cricket?

Embers was not ideally suited to role. Looking for someone perfectly suited. There are some good candidates- no names mentioned-some names mentioned in press "not inaccurate". Interviewing process will take time

Southgate Next Seson?

Fixtures not out yet but less games at Lords due to 20/20 World Cup/ Ashes. Last year Southgate asked for too much rent and couldn’t offer successive weeks. Currently trying to come to an arrangement 2012 for Olympics will probably need Southgate/ Uxbridge.

How About Teddington?

Nice ground but is a royal park- so restrictions for charging Looked at other venues but not big enough Also will wickets be up to standard?

Batting failures. Explain?

We have a good top 6 who should be doing better. Problem swing bowlers early on. Eg Woakes, Van de Wath. Need to address With youngsters we will be a top side in 4 years to come. Malan/ Morgan learning 4 day game will get better. Morgan over using reverse sweep in longer form highlighted

Better Mental Preparation?

Some in favour of sport psychologists others not. Shaggy thinks good performance comes from within.

Kolpak Players Next Year?

Hendo back for 1-dayers next year. No more 2010 maybe problem with new legislation

Future of Ed Smith?

Shaggy says difference between him an Ed one has 2 good legs other hasn’tEd won’t be captain next year as needed change.

Compo?

Out of contract. Non committal on his future

Silverwood?

At first injury believed not serious, but floating bone operated onWinter rehab for next season

Northern Rock?

Looking for new sponsors. Lehman Bros was suggested

Friedel De Wet?

Played for 2nds last year. Difficult to move on this due to work permit

ED Joyce?

Will be in Antigua and India. He is looking for new challenges. Don’t be surprised if he leaves

2nd X1?

Came 2nd. in championship. Durham won Youth squads did well.

Are we going to have own ground?

Still looking. One on Edgware Road not suitable. Shenley not an option. One not in Middlesex an option. ( Ged whispered Richmond, I coughed Radlett).

SEAXE PLAYER OF SEASON

Shaggy received award.

CONCLUSION

What a marvellous forum superbly chaired by I Luv It. Good mix of questions, mostly cricket related, answered clearly honestly and where appropriate with humour. It created a feel good factor amongst most fans.

The report is great stuff Kev.

The panel was well -selected,with all having an input, contrary to previous forums when some members appeared superfluous and Embers answered all the questions, and the tone introduced by The club chairman lent a gravitas touched with humour which was as Kev says most welcoming, hopefully he'll be in charge in future.
No critiscim is implied of the outgoing chairman of the membership committee Chris Lowe, who has performed the job previously and his contribution was acknowledged by a presentation to him from the club in appreciation of all his efforts.

Many thanks for the report - sounds like a considerable improvement on previous meetings.

It was DH

Embers answers tended to be a bit to long winded and often by time he finished some forgot what question was. Having reported on previous forums often found it difficult to structure report. Toby and other panelists were straight to point and relevant.

Shaggy's contributions were excellent and amusing. The comment on claiming all 20/20 prize money was must comical.

At beginning of meeting Luvit did a good job of saying something to effect that all views will be respected and understands passion of fans and feel free to make statements as well as ask questions. That set the mode nicely.

It went on for almost an hour and a half, which made a lot of difference, perhaps set aside that time in future with a start time of 6.45.

Indeed ,we learned little that we did not know before, but strangely no sense of anti-climax,as we came away with a feeling that all in the garden was rosey,or certainly soon would be,better days were to come, the sun was ever shining over our beloved team.
The miscreants would be departing, and men of quality and virtue would soon be arriving.
The Chairman created such an air of well -being and optimism for the future,That we believed anything was possible,The captain made such a huge impression, that the mere mention of his name brought tumultuous applause, whilst the steely eyed determination and forthright approach of the coach, assured us all he was definitely the right man for the job,and Vinny was just Vinny, prefaricating, waffling.smiling benignly,he was obviously in charge, and keen to see that the club would soon be again in the ascendancy.
We emerged entranced into the cold night air and floated with an sense of huge optimism towards our little sausages on sticks,Pringles and cheap plonk in the believe that all was right with the world and trophies in abundance were just round the corner.
