England batting coach Graham Gooch has sent a hint that Joe Root will fill the vacant number three slot, left by Jonathan Trott last week, who returned home with a stress related illness....

It was widely thought that Root, Ian Bell or Gary Balance would occupy the slot for the Adelaide test match, which begins in Wednesday.

But England are reluctant to move Bell, given the Warwickshire batsman's form in the summer, in the number five spot.

It would also be a gamble on giving the position to Gary Balance, who is tipped to come in at number six, should Root move up the order.

Meanwhile the addition to the squad of Tim Bresnan, following his recovery from injury, looks sure to push Chris Tremlett out of the side that lost so heavily in Brisbane.

ont he subject of Root moving batting positions, Gooch told BBC Sport: "Root is an opener. We didn't obviously foresee this situation with Trott, but players have to adapt"

"Whoever comes into the team, whether it is Ballance, Stokes or Bairstow, I would have thought they would come in down the order. You have got to go out there and stick your chest out for England."
