Team Buttler Win by 6 Wickets

Team Buttler secured victory over Team Morgan in this T20 warm up match before the real stuff gets going against South Africa on Friday.

Team Morgan were restricted to 139/9 with only Moeen Ali scoring any runs of note. But his 41 was quite pedestrian as it came from 40 balls.

Wickets were shared out amongst the bowlers but Ollie Stone was the pick claiming 3 wickets for 12 runs off his two overs.

Team Buttler eased to victory with 141/4 from 12.4 overs.

Joe Root and Sam Curran both finishing on 45 not out from 26 and 18 balls respectively.

So what has this match told us ahead of this South Africa series? Well the main thing is something most of us all know and that is Root should be in this T20 team or the squad at the minimum. He is a class act and seems to be the form batsmen of all the players in any form of white ball cricket at the moment.

Ollie Stone if he can ever stay fit for long enough may force is way in to the reckoning.

And could Sam Curran have forced his way in to the team? He is a left arm option with the ball and his batting can be devastating when it comes off. I could see him slotting in at 7 in place of Moeen or even 8 and jumping above his brother and Jordan in the pecking order.

As for the batting order it looks like they will stick with Buttler as an opener and he will partner Jason Roy. Malan looks to be in place at number 3 with Bairstow dropping down to number 4.

I expect Stokes to come in at 5 with the skipper Morgan taking up the finisher role at number 6.

The good thing about the batsmen in this team is that if the order doesn’t work they can change things about without having to drop people from the team. I feel like all the batsmen other than Morgan want to be in the top 3 and that Morgan will sacrifice himself to lower down than he would prefer to accommodate the others.

Also if England did decide to pick Moeen and Sam Curran at 7 and 8 then both of them would see themselves as top 6 batsmen in this format.

That selection wouldn’t weaker the bowling any either other than to say Tom Curran and Jordan are what you call specialist death bowlers and England would have to work out who would be best suited to fulfilling that role if they did go for the deeper batting line-up.

Not that they should need the deeper batting line-up and Tom Curran, Jordan and Rashid are all more than capable with the bat.
