Another Convincing Roses Triumph

By Gary Watton
May 1 2017

There was a time when Yorkshire could not buy a one-day victory against Lancashire - and now it appears that the red rose cannot cope with limited overs exchanges avec the all-powerful white rose. The visitors did manage to win the toss, but that was all that they could win on this happy bank holiday for the hosts. The latter have now secured very impressive back-to-back Royal London victories, each of which significantly involved bowling the opposition out. It's true that the home team nearly didn't bat out their full compliment of overs, but in the end they did succeed in posting a very competitive target of 297. It was always going to take very good batting or equally bad bowling to swing this encounter in Lancashire's favour. In the event, the Tykes just kept chipping away at their neighbour's batting line up - until the house finally fell down. Yorkshire already look well placed to progress as far as the semi-finals, I cynically suggest!

Ironically, David Willey was the only Yorkshire bowler to have a maiden over whilst also ending up the most expensive. Dave is dynamite in Twenty20 cricket, less good in fifty overs cricket, and even less good in the County Championship. I guess that one could say that he is very much a work in progress. Azeem Rafiq similarly excels in limited overs cricket, but is considerably less effective in the longer version. Their captain, Gary Ballance, fortunately seems at home in all forms of cricket at present - and long may it last.
