Associates Fighting for ODI 2027 WC places Oman v Canada

October 9 2026

The Associates are in that treadmill that they have to go through to actually qualify for World Cups that the Test sides don't seem to have to do.This time it is the ODI World Cup in Southern Africa in 2027.  The League 2 sides are fighting through a number of tournaments to get for the final qualifying tournament in Namibia in Feb March next year.  that means they play about 28 games against each other to get to the top of the League 2.  Presently that means a tri tounament in Muscat between 3 major contenders in Canada, Nepal and Oman.  Oman are presently 4th in the table (but with singnificant games in hand) while Canada are 6th and Nepal are trailing at 9th.  They will play 6 games ("Home" and "Away") here to see if they can change the situationandmove closer to that final event and a berth in the real thing next year.

CWC Tri Series - Oman v Canada @ Turf 1 Al Amerat Friday 9 October 2026

An important associate tournament for the nations hoping to claim a place in the 2027 ODI World Cup in Southern Africa.  It's a long trail which started a long time ago and will go through to the final qualifying tournament in Namibia in February/March 2027 where10 nations will fight for the final places with the 'big boys'.

Today Oman host Canada at the national stadium outside Muscat in the mountains around Al Amerat.  The home side won the toss and captain Vinayat Shukla chose to bat first.  The Omani side is;

Jatinder Singh, Hasnain Ul Wahab, Mujibur Ali, Hammad Mirza, Vinayak Shukla (w & c), Sanju Sajeev, Zikria Islam, Hassnain Shah, Jay Odedra, Shakeel Ahmed, Samay Shrivastava.

Quite a few new names in that eleven from the side I saw in the T20 qualifiers last October.  But it is the equivalent of the associate nation 'Test' format and the approach has to be different.  The Omani side has few pace options and a lot of spin in it's makeup for today.

Jatinder and Wahab walk out into the middle to start the innings facing Ajayveer Hundal from the Oman Academy end.  The first four sets the tone from the second ball.  9 off the first all to the bat of Singh.  The second over is taken by another pace man for Canada as Akhil Kumar takes the ball from from the supporter stand end and Oman move to 16 with Wahab still without a run to his name.  He finally gets off the mark in the 4th over while his partner looks to capitalise before the spinners come on.  After 5 overs the batting side has moved on to 43 with Singh the significant scorer with 31 from 22 while Wahab is starting to move with 11 from 8.

Canada start to run through their spinners after the initial seam attack as Sheel Patel takes the 6th and Sukjinder Singh (not confusing at all!!) taking the 7th but it doesn't stop the Omani 50 arriving in the 7th with Singh moving on to 32 from 35 while Wahab has moved to a run a ball 17.

In the 8th, Singh has Singh stumped off his first ball but as there are no review systems here, the umpire takes the view that the Omani got his foot back down (the livestream replay shows he does not) and he survives.  However it matters little as Jatinder looks to reverse the next ball in the 9th and is LBW for 34 from 32 at 50 for 1 to the Canadian Singh!

In comes Mujibar Ali and he is not going to hang about it seems as he first helps his side to 58 after 10 overs before both the Omani's greet the introduction of Harsh Thaker in the 14th with full body sixes over the top.  They have moved to 89 for 1 after 15 with Ali in 12 from 18 and Wahab on 38 from 40.

The 100 arrives in the 18th and the 50 partnership quickly follows off 28 balls at 102 for 1.  The Omani policy seems to be to be watchful against the 2 spinners (Patel  and Singh) while every other bowler is fair game. Wahab's 50 arrives at 112 for 1 just after the 20th over drinks break from just 52 balls of Kumar and after 21 overs it is 118 for 1 with the Canadians needing a wicket or two to take the game back from the home side.

Shivam Sharma tries to keep the Omani's in check in the 22nd over but Wahab is in "full swing" mode now and takes him for 22 off it to take the score quickly on to 140 for 1 and this game is getting away from the Canadians.  At the end of the 23rd, Kumar has gone for 44 off 6 overs and the home side is a run away from the 150 as Patel returns to the attack.  It comes from a Wahab single off the second ball of the 24th.  Patel has only gone for 16 from his 5 overs and at halfway Oman have 152 for 1

Hundal starts the second half with 120 runs coming from the 13 overs NOT bowled by Singh and Patel - their 12 have gone for 32!!  It's a pretty obvious strategy and the visitors need to get rid of Wahab ASAP as he moves towards 3 figures.

But as is always the way, when you think a bat is in control "cricket" comes and bites you.  In the 27th over from Hundal on 166, Ali hits a straight drive which hits Wahab on the leg backing up.  This stops the ball but the non striker keeps coming though the ball has stopped just in front of the bowler who picks it up and breaks the stumps at the non striker's end to send Hasain on his way for 93 from75 balls with a hundred in his grasp.  A brain fart at exactly the wrong time and it is 166 for 2 with Mirza arriving at the crease.

With that breakthrough, Sheel Patel do get some kind of traction as the spinner gets one in the 29th to move off the surface and he dismisses Mirza for 6 at 177 for 3 to bring the Omani Captain Shukla to the middle.  He sweeps his first to the boundary to get off th emark while looking to keep the momentum of his team going. Oman reach the 30 over mark at 183 for 3 with the hopes of putting on a significant score this morning.  Canada needs something of a comeback to keep themselves in with a shout in this game at the moment.

At 193 in the 34th, looking for the big one to 200, Ali misses a straight one that doesn't domuch and Patel  has another as he leaves bowled for 39 from 73 balls.  "You miss I hit" is a simple rule really.  In comes Ahmad as Patel finishes his spell with 2 for 36 from his 10.

Singh returns as the Canadians put the press on significantly. By the end of the 35th Oman have only progressed to 193 for 4.  10 runs in 5 overs for the loss of a wicket.  The skipper flips Sharma for 2 at the start of the 38th to take his side over 200 to 201. He has 13 and Ahmad has 5.

Thaker returns after going for 13 from his first and he takes out the Omani Captain Shukla bowling him around his legs for 20 off 21 at 208 for 5. So he gets some revenge for the early 'tap'.  Islam is the next man in andhe helps the side to 210 by the 40th over. But Thaker is on his game now though Islam is looking to score quckly.  By tyhe 44th he has 24 from 18 with 4 boundaries with 2 for six. Thaker keeps to his job and when the bat tries to heave another one the ball stays straight and he is bowled at 238 for 6 and Thaker has 2.

Sanju Sanjeev the young bat just one month into his international career is the next man in he is off the mark immedaitely and takes his side to 240 for 6 with 5 to go.  Canada have pulled it back inside 300 (which was on the cards at 30 overs).  In the 47th Thaker gets his third as Sharma catches Ahmad going for a BIG heaveand leaves with 18 off 43 at 247 for 7.

Shah is in and off the first ball of the 48th off Hundal he takes Oman over 250 with a slashed four. He takes a six 2 balls laterbut then gets a leading edge which Hundal catches off his own bowling.  He leaves for 10 off 8 at 258 for 8. Odedra does not hang about as Thaker sends him one that he takes on and deposits the ballinto the hands of Patel for 1 at 263 for 9. The last man in is Shrivastava and he doesn't get to face as Shanveer skies his first in the 50th and is caught at Fine Leg without adding to the score. He is caught for 7  by Thaker and Oman are all out for 263 - a score they would probably have taken at the start of the innings.

An excellent 93 from Wahab anchored the innings with lots of other double figure scores though no one really pushed on but a mention for Singh and Ali at the front end who pushed their scores past 30.   Some excellent spin press bowling from Patel (2 for 36 from 10) and the other Singh (1 for 42 from 10) and a good comeback after a single over of 'welly' early on by Harsh Thaker  who ended with the best figures of 4 for 37 from his 7. Sharma went for over 5 an over while Kumar and Hundal went for over 7 with only Hundal getting among the wickets with his 2.

Now, can the Omani spinners hold the Canadians who are looking for some form with the bat after a number of lean games?

The Reply

Samra and Johnson are a pair who have been together for a while (they played together in the succesful tournament in Bermuda in 2023).  Oman start with the spin of Shakeel Ahmad from the Academy end firstly to Yuvraj Samra.  Both are off the mark in the first over with 5 on the board.  The second over is put into the hands of the experienced Jay Odedra. In the over a very sharp chance off a powerful drive from Johnson is put down by Sajeev in the covers and he needs some attention to his hand.  It came straight to him but had significant 'wheels' on it and the fielder made a mess of it.  Dropping Aarron Johnson on 1 may be something you regret later in the innings.  I've seen him win games on his own with a bat.

Ahmad is a wily bowler as a spinner taking the new ball for his country.  He frustrates opening bats trying to get their innings going and in this case Samra finally gives up and goes for one.  Which is picked up on the bouondary by Islam and Canada are 10 for 1 after 3 as Hundal comes out hoping for more success with the bat than he really had with the ball.  Samra made 9 with 2 boundaries.

11 after 5 overs as Odedra comes on for the 6th. They have 17 after 7 as Oman ring the changes as Ali is another spinner who takes the 8th as his first over.

The 'Powerplay' ends with Ali taking it and Johnson opens his shoulders for what is almost the first time!!  he has beenremarkably 'sedate' in the first 20% of this innings.  They are looking to move the score along howeverand he is still there and that must be a worry for Oman.  After 10 it is 34 for 1 with Johnson on 11 from 30 and Hundal on 13 from 17.

The next part of the game is started by the wrist spin of Samay Shivastravaand he holds them in check untill the start of the 13th when a Johnson clipped six takes the visitors to 51 for 1with the big hitting Canadian on 21 from 40 while Hundal has 20 from 35.

The seam of Hassnain Shah makes the Canadian position even worse as Hundal misses a  straight one playing down the wrong line in No Man's Land and is bowled for 20 from 22 at 53 for 2 in the 14th.  The next man in is Aaditya Varadharajan who is off the mark immediately.

While Johnson is there Canada are never out of a game but they need arounf 5 and a ahlf an over and it is rising while they presently are scoring at less than 4 an over.  They need some big overs and a solid run making partnership.

By the 15th there is progress but it is only to 66 for 2 so there has been no acceleration at the moment.  Johnson has only moved to 24 while his new partner has 10.

Odedra bowls the sides to drinks after the 18th with the batting side on 73 for 2.   Johnson is the wicket the Omanis desperately want before he adds to his 28 from 56.  His partner Varadharajan has moved to a run a ball 10.

They get what they want as Shrivastava gets Johnson to clip the ball straight to Mirza at square leg.   76 for 3 having with the dangerous Canadian opener gone for 29 off 57 balls.  In comes Thaker at number 5 with a very BIG job to do if Canada are to stay in this game.  By the 20th over they have 79 runs and are still 185 runs behind with 180 balls to go so the rate has just passed 6 an over and they have 7 wickets left in the bank.

The Omani spinners are finding turn and bounce from the pitch which is making the bats job even harder.  Jay Odedra in particular is bowling a hell of a spell with present figures of 7 overs for 18 runs as he finishes the 21st. By the end of the 24th he has given up 22 and Canada move towards the half way point needing 2 runs for their 100.  Shah has only given away 7 from his 3 overs as the only Omani seamer so the runs have to come from the spinners as well to reach the total.  He's bowling full deliveries asking the bats to take him on.  They can't presently and at the halfway point the Omani seamer has gone for 1.  So Canada are still short of 3 figures by a single run.

The first ball of the 26th from Islam is hit through the covers for four to bring up the 100 to 103 for 3.  Varadharajan has 26 and Thaker has moved to 10.  Canada are scoring at 4 with the RRR at 6.5 as Ahmad returns to the attack.

By the 30th over Canada have moved to 120 and if we double that they are still short but the last 20 overs of a 50 over game a re alittle different nowadays so the game is still on.  An excellent 50 partnership comes up between these 2 at 123 for 3.  Odedra bowls out for a superb o for 24 from 10 with the 22nd over - he really has done his part in this game for his country.  Sajeev is a late addition, bowling his first with the 33rd over of the innings and making him Oman's 7th bowler to be used today. It could be because Shavastrava was being given treatment during the last drinks break and he has now left the field so his game is probably done today.

It may mean resorting the bowling for the last bit of the game or simply filling the gap until the chosen bowler returns to finish.  There are 17 overs remain in and they probably need to cover four they weren't expecting to.  The RRR has moved past 7.5 so that may defeat the Canadians before it becomes areal issue for Oman.  We shall have to see.

Sajeev continues his spell, taking the 35th as Varadharajan goes to 50 at 144 for 3 with 2 fours and a six in his 70 ball half ton.  With 15 to go Canada are looking at 144 for 3 needing 120 more as Shah takes the next.  The North Americans are still scoring at 4ish while they now need 8.  Oman willbe happy with six and over.  It is boundaries they need to stop so the pressure builds on the batting partnerships.Canada would like to be under 100 with 10 overs to go.

The 150 arrives off Sajeev at the start of the 37th with a single.  Thaker adds a six later in the over and this could be the start of the Canadians going for this total perhaps.  They really need a boundary at least anover to keep the pressure down to a manageable level.  If they have too many dot balls, the RRR will start to steeple and they may not be able to pull it back into line.

The good news for the home side is that Shrivastava is back on the field and bowling again but the bad news is that the batting pair are starting to find the boundary on a more regular basis.  They take 10 off two overs in a row and that relieves the pressure a lot.

They are below 100 required with 12 overs to go and Oman bring Ahmad back on having gone for only 13 from his 7 overs.  But this is a bit of desperation really as the attack is starting to leaks runs.  However Varadharajan, the set bat drills the ball straight to Ali how holds the catch and he goes for 64 from 90 at 171 for 3 bringing captain  HamzaTariq to the crease to have to start the partnership growth again.  Thaker now becomes the target for the home side.  Ahmad takes his 51st wicket and by the basis of his economy rate he becomes the number one bowler in the League 2 standings beating Sholtz of Namibia who has the same number of wickets frommore games but at a higher rate

It gets better at the start of the 40th over as Shah delivers a straight one that Thaker steps away to drill.  but he doesn't and he loses his middle stump.  173 for 5 with Harsh Thaker walking back with 40 to his name from 53 balls an there are 2 new bats at the crease as they start the last 10 overs of the game.  Shreyas Movva is the new man in and Canada start the last 10 at 174 for 5. The numbers are simple 60 balls 5 wickets and 90 runs required.  The rate is 9 an over.

Shrivastava has 3 overs left as he bowls the 41st.  THIS is the bowler they ought to target as he has been expensive today  going for 61 from his 8 though Ali was even more expensive from his 3 going at more than 8 an over

Oman are still looking to manufacture an extra 2 overs but Ahmad helps the maths by tempting Movva who comes out of his crease to a ball and does not get back in time and Shukla breaks the stumps.  He goes for 8 from 12 at 190 for 6 in the 43rd as Akhil Kumar comes out with his side needing 10 and over.  Ahmad has 3 for 21 from 9 overs.

Canada need 70 from 7 with 4 wickets left  Oman have to find 7 overs of bowling from what is left of their attack.  One of the gambles takes the next as Ali returns having not been that impressive so far in the second half of this game.  The Canadian skipper Tariq will be aware of this and will push this one.   The 200 arrives in the over with a two from a misfield to Kumar and the 45th ends on 212 for 6.

Shah takes the 46th and he bowls Kumar with his 5th ball tosend him back to the dressing rooms at 215 for 7 .  The bat tried to ramp the ball around and missed it so he goes for 8 from 10 and in comes Sharma.

Canada now need 49 in 4 overs as Oman turn to Shrivastava to be more frugal at the end of his spell.  he has leaked another two runs before Tariq goes for a big hit and finds Islam on the boundary and he doesn't drop it. 217 for 8 as Tariq goes for 28 from 22.  They have 2 wickets, 3.1 overs and a requirement of 47 to win this one as Patel joins his partner in the middle.  Shrivastava fools him with a wrong 'un and he is stumped first ball. 317 for 9 and this game is pretty much done as Sukhjinder Singh is the last man in as Shah starts the 48th.  He bowls out with the 48th finishing with figures of 4 for 33 as Singh comes up the wicket and misses a straight one - not the first.  Oman win the game by 41 runs.  They really controlled the second half although there were times when you wondered if they had got enough.  They had.  Good bowling performances built on the solid run base and Canada needed another bat to take on the game with only Varadharajan and Thaker putting a partnership together to push the score.

Seven bowlers were used but alongside Shah the standout bowler was Ahmad with 3 for 25 and the back end wickets of Samay Shrivastrava though 63 from 9 is too many.  A mention ought to also be made for Jay Odedra who went for 2.4 an over.

Scorecard

Oman start the competition well looking to be in the top 3 of the league before they reach their 36th match in the UAE later on in the year.  Canada look to regroup against N.epal here on Sunday.

THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH WAS - HASNAIN UL WAHAB and his 93 run innings

The situation is crazy in that over a long period of time all the sides in the 2nd League (8 of them) all play 36 games. Some have finished their allocation while others have 12 to play. In this tri tournament, Canada & Nepal will finish their allocations while after this Oman will still have 4 to play.

Scotland as finished their36 (presently in second), The USA will be done in 2 games (on top at the moment). It looks like Oman presently in 4th will finish last playing all the sides who have games left at the end.

Then the top four will join others in qualifying tournamentsfor the lower rated sides and 10 nations will then compete in a qualifier m,oving into a surper 6 to get the last couple for the WC.

Don't ever say the lowerlevel nations get free rides into these global competitions, they compete each other to death for the privilege.
