The website has become part of the sponsorship base of Somerset. Donations from the posters who use this site hav been used to sponsor Wes Durston during the 2009 season. After a lot of discussion but finally because of his local links and his popularity with the suporters who use Grockles Wes became the first Grockles sponsored player on February 26 2009
Wesley John Durston - a name Somerset supporters heard around the ground for a number of years before he became a fully fledged part of the first team make-up of the county. The 28 year old who was a Somerset Cricket Board player for 2 years before he joined the first class list completely in 2002 is the Grockles.com sponsored player for 2009.
Since 2002 Wes has played 33 First Class matches and has been to the wicket 55 times. He has a highest score of 146 not out against Derbyshire in August 2005 and a career average of 38. He is a consistently performing batsman in the long format and a dangerous one in the shorter versions as the middle order run pusher.
This season he has two personas to put himself up against. Ian Blackwell's position within the side is up for grabs and Wesley is one of those looking to make it his. As a batsman he has every right to put himself up as a main contender. As a bowler he has some work to do but he can be a man to turn to in a crisis and he has shown that he can produce the goods, although it has been in the 20/20 version of the game that he has been most effective with the ball.
He has another persona to emulate as well however and this could be the main reason why the name of Durston is the first one with our sponsorship. On a local level, and especially in Glastonbury, it seems the Durston family are part of the cricket world. Wes has been joined in the past by Dan and Greg. The parallel is there between his position and that of the Parsons twins.
Wes has to see 2009 as his true opportunity to emulate Keith and make himself the true local hero of the Somerset side, It's what we will be hoping for and what, I'm sure, he'd love to happen. We'll be there to watch, cheer and support your efforts Mr Durston and although you have the expectations of the "Grocklees" on your shoulders now, you also know that you have our undying support and belief that 2009 could be an awesome year for you. Hopefully we'll help you make it happen.

They might be available at different levels, ie sponsoring Banger or Willo may cost us more than, say Neil Edwards or Munday.

If we do sponsor someone and they then get left out of the team for no apparent reason, can we claim a partial refund?
I suggest we sponsor Peter Trego and then if, as was the case last season, he suddenly gets left out of the Pro 40 team for no good reason, maybe the club might pay attention to us - as sponsors - if we complain......
After all sponsors are much more important than mere fans..

If this idea had been floated a few weeks ago when IB was still a Somerset player then I am sure there would have been no problem in raising whatever was required to sponsor him.
Peter is an alternative, provided he does not fall foul of the management team during the coming season. I don't suppose we can get any guarantee on that, but can we find out how much he would cost?

Checked the price Congar and Pete has already gone. I wold have expected him to be outside our price range anyway. Although responses have been quite surprising. If yo would be intersted then please let me know over the weekend because it looks like players are being taken quite quickly and we are still short if we want to consider it.

I can just picture my LoL bought penthouse overlooking the ground now.
The alarm clock goes off at 10.30 as the sun shines in through the curtains.
As I wake from a deep slumber the sound of shouting and leather on willow reaches my ears as the players warm up on the outfield down below.
The smell of bacon sizzling in the pan drags me back to the present and then Ian Bell knocks the door,enters and brings in a plate of bacon and eggs with four slices of hotly buttered toast.
I thank him and dismiss him as he scuttles off to grab a last minute of net practice before the game starts.
I get up,wave to the crowds down below,with the promise of tea and sandwiches for all at three.
The commoners respond and clap wildly as I take a Caesar like bow,the umpires walk out and play begins.
Bell takes a middle guard and I shout "Oi,Belly,another slice of toast next time".
He nods and smiles and is promptly bowled by the amazing Mr Caddick.

A quite beautiful little sketch, BJ - most cheering when, without even a fixture list, the next real cricket seems years away. It will certainly make buying you that flat well worthwhile - I got no numbers this weekend so it must be my turn to get six next time.

The very mention of turkey curry must mean it's nearly Christmas.
As a child my favourite rugby memories were always of this time of year,down at my beloved Stradey Park.
London Welsh would play there every year and the ground was always packed out with men and boys desperate to escape the confines of the house and the endless conveyer-belt of long forgotten visitors.
The atmosphere in the Tanner Bank was unlike anything I've encountered before or since in that long gone enclosure.Turkey legs were passed around,much whiskey was drunk and hymns and arias sung by one and all.
The result of the match was unimportant as old acquaintances were hugged and old enemies offered the hand of reconcilliation.
For one day everything seemed good.
And then you find out your breakfast has been ruined by a selfish cricket player.
This modern world.
I don't know.

Presently I have 12 contacts offering contributions for a sponsorship and taking them at their lowest level of contribution we have £195 possibly pledged. I could go back to those people and ask them if they would consider adding a little to their already generous offers.

If the site is really to be represented by a player I would much rather have more supporters offering smaller amounts than a small group paying for the majority of the person.
I've been in contact with Joanne and she is keen for us to go ahead and there are still plenty of people available. Peter Trego has gone it seems but we are not presently looking at that £300+ bracket but the £250 segment.
11 more people pledging £5 would get us there £10 would give us a significant chance at the more costly players - I assume Banger went early but he's there in the £400

Well we have a response from the usual suspects and not a lot else so we may very well not be involved this year I'm afraid.
It seems my plea for a more wholesale response fell on deaf ears.

After the holiday I've been back in touch with the club to see who is still under consideration. There are options on a number of players but with a bit of negotiation the players in the poll on the left hand side are still options.
This is mostly a hypothetical exercise but please give some thought to your vote. You never know, people may see the list and express an interest they didn't have.

I voted for the early leader in the club-house who is no longer the early leader. Apart from anything else, I fear we may not see Wes in the CC team at all..
I voted the same way as AGod - and share the assessment in his second sentence.
Commercially, sponsoring a player who will not be seen by supporters seems a little daft but this is a supporter site and if we went ahead the final decision would have to be a majority decision by the people involved in the sponsorship deal after canvassing the main readership first,
To be less cryptic - for those who didn't see the early votes - the player for whom I and, I think, AG voted was Neil Edwards.

Not that I'm the sort of person who would get caught up in such a caper, but it did cross my mind that it would be amusing to sponsor Sir Ian Blackwell, albeit in his Durham colours. We could, without any question of doubt, get that story into the Wisden Cricketer.

I called him "Mr Pointy Finger" once because that habit irritated me so much. Shame he doesn't grace us anymore - I recall there being some interesting anecdote about dressing up as a Gladiator.

hmmm.. interesting, almost everyone that has commented seems to say that they voted for NE and yet he trails. Is WD the object of desire for the silent majority?
I don't know. I do not know if there is any mechanism to prevent somebody from voting more than once?
Well it's only a straw poll and there's only been 32 votes so I wouldn't worry too much about it. There have only been about 5 comments in favour of NE and about 3 pushing WD's so it hasn't been that lop sided.

I've only just caught this thread but count me in for £20 I'm happy with Wes...I don't think I've ever seen him let the county down

For another £100 we could have Charl or Alfonso but I said we were making this an investment in a local player and as much as it would be great to have Charl in what might be his last year that wouldn't quite go with the philosophy.
I'l give details of how to send your contribution when I get chance this weekend. I'll make the payment and then get re-imbursed.

We may be all gambling on Wes and the amount of first team cricket he gets.
I expect to see him in one dayers first even though he is one of our most consistent batsmen. But that whole spinning allrounder position is up for grabs by whoever shows the most potential and wants it badly enough.

I always went to the seconds at the main ground Rob.
Last year at the other Taunton ground where most of the seconds matches were played, it was either clashing with a first team match at Taunton or the weather wasn’t very good to travel to it.
I try to go to the two matches at North Perrott it was the same problem there, the weather.

Perrot is a lovely ground and they usually take the school kids down to watch.A pint of Stowford goes down well too.

They did say at the AGM that they were sorting that out and the seconds would now travel properly with overnight stops and all that stuff. So maybe they'll take the home games more seriously as well.

I Think we should sponsor Charl because he has done very well for the club in the last 3 seasons hes been here and he has always been very consistent .

He no longer returns to his homeland during the winter and is very settled with his family in the west country.

I'd be interested in getting involved in this but have no idea how to do it. I don't know how you lot seem to communicate secretly with each other when I'm not there. Is there a knock or a hand-shake that I'm not aware of ? I wear my trousers rolled up round one ankle if that helps ? I also carry a copy of The Times and have been known to frequent a pink carnation (but I don't drive a pick-up truck).

I think Mark has the best chance of playing some 1st team matches and I have voted accordingly.
Yes, I shall vote for Mark Turner. He is, at least, reasonably assured of some one-day cricket in the first team.
I fear that none of those players are likely to play a huge amount of first-class cricket, unless we have a dry summer (in which case we may well see quite a bit of Munday.)
I suppose Ben Phillips might play a few CC games, but his fitness could always put paid to that.

I had a telephone call from Hallam Moseley last week.He has just retired,except for doing some coaching at Lords.He wishes to be remembered to all his old friends, and would like to come down this summer for a get together,we just have to sort which game it should be. He is still the same as ever but didn`t really believe that too many people will remember him. I assured him that he was often spoken about.
He was/is a great chap! One of our legends in my view...

Top man, Hallam - always seemed to be fielding on the boundary near us when I used to go to JPL games on Sunday afternoons in the 70s - must have dislocated my shoulder many times trying to copy that throw - does he coach it at Lords, together with the jumbled-arms bowling action?
LoL you beat me to it about his throwing arm who could forget that, his arm never went above shoulder height.
His throw was low and flat and accurate.

I have very fond memories of watching him play,he always seemed to be smiling and so full of energy.

It's brought goosepimples on the back of my neck and a few tears of joy reading all these remarks about one of the greatest men to play for our county.He may not have been the most talented but Hallam was a true entertainer.Long may the great man live and it would be great to have an exhibition game with the great team of his time and the current great team to honour Hallam.This could be part of the celebrations to open the new revamped ground.

In another time, Hallam would have played for the WIndies, there have been many lesser players who have achieved that honour.

Used to play wearing glasses which, if I remember correctly, were secured with an elastic band affair around his head when he bowled. Happy memories of a golden era. Here's to a long and enjoyable retirement.

A distant relative rang me last week to offer me an hour's coaching at Lord's which he'd booked for his son who now could not make it. I went with my Godson with considerable trepidation as I have never had any formal coaching in my life.
Anyway, guess who our coach was?! He knew about Grockles and even though I am an infrequent poster I hope nobody minds that I reiterated the warmth that I know from all the other posts that we all still feel for him. He said that the years he spent at Taunton were the happiest of his life.
We had a fantastic hour with him and he was very encouraging despite our limited ability ("Come on Dad!").
A lovely man and a much bigger hero to me than a certain Sachin Tendulkar who was coaching a young lad (his son?) in the next net.

Forgot to ask Shepton. I'll have to go again. In fact anybody who wants can book a session via the Lord's website. I think it only costs £60 for an hour and Hallam did assure me that he's there every day.
Presumably there's a surcharge to get Hallam doing your coaching rather than some wahsed-up has-been like Tendulkar?
I hope he is not at Lords every day, I would be nice to see him at Taunton sometime this season.

I have somewhere, a photo taken at a one-dayer at Lords of the great Hallam being offered a beer by a man in a Superman outfit following an injury sustained on the boundary. The beer was gratefully received!!!

I took my U11 team to the indoor school at Lord's last weekend where we had Hallam as our MCC coach. He was fantastic with the boys giving them excellent coaching tips with much humour and laughter. He really is a very nice guy.
One of the very best, still giving to the game he so obviously loves, and surely a candidate for Honorary Life Membership.

I f Haalam is reading this there is a formaer players reunion during the Warwickshire match,with a diiner on teh friday night. i am sure everybody would love to see him contact John Harris at the ground.
I spoke to Hallam last evening,and told him about the ex players dinner, I think that he might be in touch with John Harris he is enjoying his coaching and is spending lots of time with his grandson Malachi
