T20 Starts at the Rosebowl

Number 3

By Grockle
June 1 2011

The new men are ready and waiting, Murali Kartik is named along with Roelof van der Merwe who is in at number 3 on the batting line-up because of the absence of Craig Kieswetter.  Kirby and Compton make up the eleven and we have won the toss and will bat first againsty Corky's lot.  But we are 37 for 3 as I do this with Dimitiri Mascarenhas taking all three.

V Hampshire FLT20 @ Rosebowl Wednesday 1 June 2011

Here we are at the start of the 'Hit and Giggle' as it is popularly called and we face the "Champions" Hampshire in our first match at their concrete bowl of a stadium.

Our first starting eleven is without our second keeper Craig Kieswetter and so it is;

Trescothick, Trego, van der Merwe, Hildreth, Compton, Buttler, Suppiah, Kartik, Kirby, Thomas, Gregory

We won the toss and decided to take them on by setting a target.  Cork started the bowling and went for eleven as Marcus and Trigger went for him.  Unfortunately Mascarenhas at the other end is bowling full and stumps to stumps and he gets The Boss with his 3rd ball.  11 for 1 and not the start we wanted.

Roelof is the next man in and is obviously expected to belt the ball - he plays here for the Titans and the Chargers so it is a place he is well used to.  He is probably there because Craig K is not available but he does get into the game immediately and fires two boundaries in his first over.  Unfortunately Mascarenhas is up for this and gets him in his next at 33 for an 11 ball 15.  Good scoring rate but not long enough - but he was up for it immediately.

In comes James Hildreth but 5 balls later he becomes Dimi's third victim for just 2 taking the Hampshire bowler to 3 overs 3 for 9.  Cork also brings on Briggs to tie down Trego while this is happening.  Compton is the next man in but by now the Hampshire bowlers are in charge.  Mascarenhas bowls out for 19 and they bring on Tahir, the nemesis from the final of 2010 for the 9th.  We pass 50 before he comes on and Pete looks to take him on producing the first six of the tournament straight back over the bowler's head to take us to 67 at halfway.

The second half of the innings starts with Wood and Pete deposits his first to the boundary for 6 and takes 8 off the 11th.  He is looking for it but it seems it is not a flat wicket and it is a case of putting the blade to the right ball.  Nick is in the support role ready to push the score on when necessary and accelerate towards the end.  Meanwhile Trigger goes to 48 with his third six but is very lucky when he scoops Tahir's next into no man's land. He does however go 50 off 30 with the next ball.  It is his game for the taking at 85 for 3 with a 50 including 4 fours and 3 sixes.

Briggs is in for the 13th and keeping the Somerset men honest with singles or doubles only until Compo reverse sweeps him for a boundary.  They keep going at 10 and are 95 with 8 overs to go.  Cork is back on for the 14th and Trigger brings the 100 to take him to 55 and is then out to a low 'skimmer' very well caught by Vince the very next ball 100 for 4.  We didn't want that!  At the start of the 15th in comes Jos Buttler facing Briggs and he is straight off the mark.  Compton pushes for 2 and is the man sweating as he is judged as making his ground...JUST!  Now there is a turn up.  Nick HASN'T run himself out!!

At the end of 15 we have 110 and the pressure is on Jos to take on Tahir.  He simply milks the single and Tahir has Compo in all kinds of trouble for a couple of balls. However he does want to take the SA spinner on but they only take 6 off the over.  24 balls to go.  Wood takes the 17th and we aren't hitting enough big run balls.   Compton walks outside his stumps and gets one to his body which would have been wide if he hadn't moved.  Tim Robinson says to him "You can't walk over there and then expect a wide!".  Wood does very well until Compo puts him into the crowd.  126 for 4 with 3 to go.  Is the 150 on?  Mascarenhas says that the wicket is two paced - "Slow and Slower" so who knows.

Jos goes for Tahir, gets a leading edge and is caught in the gully at 132 halfway through the 18th.  This brings in Arul Suppiah in who is off pushing for two but Compton isn't interested in the second 135 for 5 with 12 balls to go.  Cork comes in for the penultimate over. Arul strokes him for one.  Compo hits a length ball and is caught in the covers 136 for 6.  37 off 40 for Nick - still not sure he's a T20 game.  10 balls to go with Gregory the new man in.  Cork bowls a dot and then they run two.  150 does not look on with these two I'm afraid as Arul keeps finding the fielder on the boundary.  Cork goes for too few and he finishes with 2 for 24 with only 4 from the over and a wicket.

Wood gets the last one at 139 for 6.  Ball 1 once more Suppiah finds the boundary fielder 1 run.  Gregory misses the next one before taking 2 off the third.  Wood bowls a wide and then bowls Gregory as he drags it onto his stumps.  2 balls to go and out comes Kartik to hopefully smack a couple.  But all he does is take a single 144 for 7.  Arul takes the last ball and they take a single.  145 for 7.  I'd say that is 20-ish short.

 The Reply

Alf gets his first over in the UK against  Lumb and Adams.  They start well and take 8 but find Kirby dangerous in the second.  They take 13 off the two.  Gregory replaces Thomas for the third and Lumb is almost run out off the 5th ball of the over. IF Hildreth had hit and all that.  Unfortunately he didn't and Lewis goes for 11 off his first.  24 after 3.

Steve will probably be bowled through as he takes the fourth but Adams gets his length ball away and when he tries the slow one he goes for another boundary.  Hampshire are well up with the rate as they move towards 40 at the end of the 4th. 35 for 0 and 11 more off the over.  Too many too soon with Lumb on 19 and Adams on 16.

Marcus brings on RvdM for the 5th.  They go to 42 but one shot was a six from Lumb so he did quite well.  Nevertheless the home side are there or there abouts.  Alf changes ends and nearly has Lumb as he nearly puts it down Kirb's throat - but it doesn't and Lumb moves up a gear with a six off the next one to bring up the 50.  Thomo is going for a lot - 24 off his 2!!

For the 7th Trescothick brings on Kartik to "stem the tide" at 58 for 0.  But he doesn't as Lumb sixes him over mid off and then takes a four two balls later as he goes to 47 off 25 balls.  They are going for 10 an over with all their boys having been given a run.  Only Pete T to go!  He is on for the 8th.  They have the rate down to under 6 an over and we need some wicket work quick.  He only goes for 5 but Lumb goes to 50 off 29 deliveries.

Lewis is called back for his second but Hampshire are nearly 40 runs ahead at the end of the 9th and haven't lost a wicket yet!!  They need 66 from 66 at the end of the 9th and no-one looks like getting a wicket I'm afraid.  So, to prove me wrong, Trego gets one with a full toss, just under waist high, which Lumb takes hold of and is acrobatically caught jjust this side of the rope by Arul Suppiah.  90 for 1.  The SKY commentators are full of wonderful things to say about Lumb, even though he has hardly eclipsed the innings of the man who got him - Pete Trego!  He only did 'quite well'.

The 100 arrives in the 13th off MK after RvdM stops them getting it at the end of the 12th.  Then Adams looks to sweep Kartik who flights one and takes his middle stump out.  101 for 2.  They need 45 off 44 balls and MacKenzie is at the crease to do it for them.  It's 45 off 42 at the end of the over and Kartik is getting turn.  RvdM continues.  He's tight and difficult to get away but he bowls a wide which goes for four halfway through!  With another one that goes between Jos's legs but which is wonderfully saved by Hildreth, they are 111 for 2 after 14.  MK bowls out during the 15th, we could have done with him having two sets.  Should Marcus bring on Suppiah?

Murali finishes with a very credible 1 for 23.  RvdM will bowl out in the next one with them needing 26 off 29.  We don't have enough to play with and our slow men have done their job before we have broken this side.  Mackenzie places one to the boundary just after his partner Vince has done it and it is 19 to win with 24 left and only seam to come.  Pete and Alf should be the last men but as Alf is presently going at 12 an over it shouldn't be too long before this one is put to bed.  Mackenzie dabs one for four and then just pops the single out - it is a "walk in the park" from here.  At the end of the 17th they need 12.  Hampshire will get to ZERO off this (they were minus 2 because of a dodgy pitch last season).  Thommo is on for the 18th with no leeway for error. He goes for four off his first thanks to a slog to deep mid wicket (no man there)from Vince.  He bounces him with the second ball and his slow ball goes for four to the mid wicket boundary off his third.  A single off the fourth leaves 3 and Mackenzie turns it into 2 with the 5th.  It's gone and SKY are talking about a 'drubbing'. Alf ends with a yorker and endss with 34 off 3.  He needs to get better!!

Pete finishesthe game with a misfield off the first and then Trigger nips out Vince with a full one.  Howell comes out to finish the game off with a  shot but he gets one under his ribs from Trigger.  However he can't stem the tide as he bowls a slow wide.  Well and truly beaten here.  Not enough runs and not enough control in the field I'm afraid.  Not a great start but there is a long way to go.

I personally don't think Compo is a T20 man - no criticism of him tonight for the first part of his innings but he can't kick it on if he doesn't start that way.  We needed Craig K tonight at the front end with Pete for if Marcus goes early.  Alf had a 'mare' and can't bowl like that again and keep his place - Mark T did that a couple of times BUT he did take wickets!  RvdM looks useful but Steve and Lewis need to tighten up - LG is no use at the end of an innings if we never get there and tonight they couldn't trust using him.

Pete  was the star tonight though he won't get credit because he is on the losing side and an ex-England T20 player got about the same score.  Some headaches for MT before Sunday I'm afraid...

So we have 2 overseas players (for first 8) both left arm spinners (although different styles)

Cant see any scenario wherre Max or George will ever play now, Arul also likely to be played ahead.

With Willow likely to be rested, Kirby with ankle issue and Hussain who's rarely played one day cricket personally i'd have much preferred a seamer of some kind.

Quite happy however to trust Mr Rose, he hasnt made many bad calls in his tenure as the big boss...

Surely Dockrell was world class in the world cup?

Does this mean he's not really fit?

Another random signing by the club!!
According to the clubs website Brian Rose has heard "good" reports about him,ive heard even better ones about Dockrell and Waller.
Look on the bright side......he cant be any worse than Mendis!!!

Surely no player should be signed unless Brian has SEEN (as opposed to heard) good things.

The only way I'd approve of this would be if we're going spin crazy in T20 and one of our young spinners still plays as one of 3 main spinners.

His career T20 economy rate is a whole 0.07 runs per over better than Max's. His strike rate is worse.

Brian only 'hopeful,' that Alf and Kartik will play on Wed so don't know what that's about?

Says vdm will play and rest of side made up of our CB 40 team so no George, I guess?

Presumably this means Adam Dibble is in with a shout?

Hardly a `random signing`, Brother Of...., when we made an inquiry about him last year and have been following his career closely ever since.

RadstockRob
29/05/2011 07:57
In today's Independant Mr Rose said that he made an enquiry about him last season and has been following his career closely. He has been playing IPL so presumely Brian has seen him playing there this season. He is due to arrive in England tonight and it is hoped that he'll take part in a practice match between our bowlers and bartmen tomorrow.
Brian also sats that George Dockerell should be ready for first action in a couple weeks, but there is no mention of Craig's progress.
He also say "if we have to rest Kartik at some stage ,I would have no qualms about playing George instead"
Would Kartik really need more rest?He gets more rest than a hibernating tortoise!
If I were a young player at the club and had done well in the winter in the West Indies, captained the 2nds successfully and scored runs, travelled the country as 12th man for the 1st X1 and was a brilliant fielder and was then going to overlooked with the signing of a mercenary I'd be looking to find alternative employment. We have been led to believe that our youngsters would be given a chance but in my opinion this move stinks.

29/05/2011 08:14
I think Brian's thoughts lack coherence.

He claims we were looking for a guy that can 'bat at six and bowl.'

er... Well then what was Dirk Nannes all about?

And whilst I'd rather see him higher up, could not Arul Suppiah 'bat at six and bowl'???

Money to burn.

Mr Rose has made a lot of good signings but the list of not so good is growing and I include Cameron White in that although he is a good player.

Could be a very good signing - and of course might not be. Don't forget his T20 record will include internationals, AG, while Max's won't. I've seen him bat and bowl for SA on TV and he looked pretty good to me.

Makes life tough for our youngsters, but they're young and will expect to have to work hard for their places in a top team. If RvdM does well, they should be happy for the club's success; if he doesn't, I hope they'll earn their chance.

As Mike says, and others imply, Brian Rose has made a lot of good signings, so I'll back him on this one. We shall see how it goes, but in the meantime, welcome to Taunton...

Rob is correct.

I will expand on my remarks above and ask will he bring in more people paying on the gate, if the answer is probably not then I will say that the money spent on him could have been added to the profit we make this year. We have enough players available in my opinion unless there are several players not fit to play that we do not know about.

When making any decision the welfare of the club must be considered, I know there will be those who don’t agree with me on this but this is my opinion.

One thing I never do is criticise others views only post my own opinion.

I would like to add this I am not sure which thread to put this on, it is about injuries.

On the test match program yesterday they were talking about Jimmy Anderson’s replacements they think he may be injured for several weeks, when we were discussing who will be picked for the t20 team it was mentioned that Steve Kirby may be rested, on the TV yesterday Steve was mentioned as a possible Anderson’s replacement that will also depend on if he is fit.

SP - the stats on cricinfo are separated out. T20 internationals are listed separately from other T20 games.

I don't think the internationals are then also included in the generic T20 category?

AGod
29/05/2011 10:14
I don't think there's much doubt Mike that this player is highly unlikely to put extra bums on seats.

For one thing the way Brian describes him he sounds like a boring, Mike Yardy type slow bowler ie bowls darts rather than flighting it.

Now, as Brian says that style can be effective in T20 but I'd suggest it's a style that does nothing to excite.

AGod
29/05/2011 10:21
I actually checked his record again, SP, and it is not clear whether the T20 international games which are listed separately are then also included in the generic T20 numbers.

What I can tell you is that IF they are included they would not have made his overall record worse because his T20I record is better than his generic T20 record.

Perhaps that is suggestive of a good big-match temperament.

However, I still cannot believe that he is so much better than George/Max so as to justify the wages.

I'd have kept the money and looked to use it to strengthen the CC squad for next season.

Well, we have him now, lets hope he does well for us!

Will be interesting to see how KP goes this year. Seems to be a combination of being out of form and bowlers having worked him out has led to a poor IPL this year.

Not sure we needed a seamer, unless of the real explosive type. No reason why you can't use 3 spinners in a T20 team either.

I'm a little surprised at this news. I have seen him play a few times and I think his strength is certainly as a bowler - I can't remember too many runs. He will keep things tight hopefully and I can see him bowling well in tandem with MK. (if the latter has recovered in time!)

29/05/2011 15:05
Well that woke everybody up didn't it?

I understood that there was the criteria of "quality" in any Rose decision to buy someone in. I don't see any increase in that from the players in our present squad.

Either there may be some problem with Kartik that we don't know about (though he seems able to play golf at the moment) or......? Don't ask me.

However he's coming, he's one of ours now so we have to hope that he has a contribution to make. George is doubtful but wasn't he always a third option with Arul taking wickets and Kartik arriving. I've no idea where this puts Max.

Wednesday here we come.

yes i saw that twitter, like you said could have nothing to do with it but…

It does seem odd to recruit another left arm spinner when we did well last year with the two who you would have thought would bowl: Kartik and Suppiah.

I can't see us, or anyone else for that matter, playing three left arm spinners in the same game (although sides might bowl three slow bowlers, that's where I would have thought waller might have had a chance) so one of them won't be playing.

Given they have just forked out on VDM I presume he's first in line despite Suppiah being a better bat and Kartik a better bowler (unless he's fed up with T20).

Maybe they want to put in as many people as possible with "big match" experience so we don't have a re-run of last year's mistake.

Hope he does well and deserves our support etc.

Grockle
29/05/2011 17:46
I supposed one way to look at it is that we may be creating a deep squad in the hope that we can rotate players, including the younger members of our side, through the T20 and give everyone the chance to show what they can do while maintaining an experienced and strong core for them to work with.

I hope that analysis proves to be spot on, Grockle.

One wonders whether Max will be asked by the club to clarify the meaning of his tweet?

You and I had this debate, Grockle. As I understand it you seemed opposed to signing any overseas locum for Pollard. I said I could understand Brian wanting to bring in the 'world class,' player that he told us he was after.

Frankly, I think the criteria about wanting someone to bat at six and bowl has been made up after the event. After all there is no doubt that we were trying to sign Dirk Nannes who would not have fitted that bill at all.

One of my points in this debate was the commercial angle of having another overseas player. For example, had Brian announced that Marcus would have a new opening partner by the name of Sachin, the club phones would not have stopped ringing off the hook in terms of ticket sales. I'm guessing that you would not exactly have been unhappy at such a prospect either!?

Whilst I hope your analysis is correct I do also wonder if your other question about maybe there's something wrong with Kartik that we do not know about may have a ring of truth to it. Brian sounded less than certain that Kartik would play at the Rose Bowl. It might be that Kartik has asked for the first few T20 games off, for example?

I posted earlier about Max's record vs RVM's in T20s.

Well, George's record, albeit from far fewer games, vs that of RVM is a no contest with George having been very clearly superior in economy rate and also better in both average and strike rate.

It looks to me that we've probably signed a bits-and-pieces sort of cricketer, albeit one whose game may be well-suited to T20. Like Kartik seems to have been lightly used by his IPL team. Batted at 8 for them and barely got a chance for a knock. His highest score in the preceding six or so domestic T20 games in SA was only 20 odd.

I'm not at all sure that this guy should come in in front of five SCCC players.

SheptonPaul
30/05/2011 07:16
But, AG, I believe his inside leg measurement vs shoe size co-efficient is far superior to that of Max, George and even Joel Garner, while his Mum's milkman's hat size is one of the biggest in his district of Bloemfontein. BR says he also checked out his great-grandfather's uncle's star sign and the engine size / top speed ratio in his wife's hairdresser's old Austin Allegro.

Even given such thorough research, I'm still not entirely convinced that he'll achieve the requisite run-up strides per ball bowled or threes-turned-into-twos at fine-third-man that the Somerset regulars expect of all our players, not least slow left armers under 16 stone or 5 foot 11 and three-quarter inches...but I'm willing to wait until the first couple balls of Wednesday's game before I make a final judgement on this appalling waste of money.

I'm sure he'll do a steady job, SP. Not saying I expect him to be poor and go round the park.

But the only relevant question is not 'will he do a fairly good job?' it's will he do a better job than those that could have played in his stead.

As a bowler the records suggest he will not.

Is there a danger of a law suit appearing sometime? If fans bought tickets with the promise of KP featuring, they might be really miffed? I can't remember what the advertising was like, but had always assumed KP would be here for the start of it.

It's all becoming a bit farcical, with all the comings and goings of so called star players. I much preferred days gone past, when we'd have one overseas player for the whole season, giving fans and players the time to bond.

Nowadays, the game has far more to with big bucks.

George Dockrell. 8 overs for 35 runs, with 3 wickets. 4-0-16-3 vs Windies and 4-0-19-0 vs England.

Van Der Merwe? Entrusted with all of 3 overs in 2 games, took 1 wicket for 36 runs.

Well, how else are the relative merits of players to be judged other than by either stats or by comparing their performances in the same match vs the same opposition?

IF (big if) we manage to squeeze three spinners into the team - that is Kartik, the new man and either of George or Max, then we will be able to compare the new man's bowling directly with George or Max. Otherwise? The stats are really all we have. And if RVM is going to play in the same team as George/Max then I suppose it does not matter that much what their relative performances are because, in that case, RVM would be included at the expense of either a seamer or a batsman, not instead of one of the young spinners.

On your "average," pitch Van Der Merwe's figures suggest he will probably bowl something like 4-0-28-1 - perfectly presentable figures. But there's no logical reason to believe that such figures would be beyond George/Max, so far as I can see? The stats suggest Max would be expected, on average, to also bowl 4-0-28-1 and George 4-0-24-1.

All of these average stats - for all three of them - are pretty good for T20 so....

Perhaps there really is a chance that we will play three spinners...... as this guy is supposed to be able to bat at six, then you could have an attack of Alf, Lewis, Pete, Kartik, VDM AND George or Max. That would be absolutely fine by me.

But the two main T20 things that I had been looking forward to was seeing Lewis bowling at the death in tandem with Alf and George or Max bowling in tandem with Kartik.... promising youngsters bowling in tandem with our two star one-day bowlers.

Norwich SCCC

The bookmakers seem to think we are certainties to win the T20. We are currently 3/1 to lift the trophy - an unbelievably short price before a ball has been bowled!

Grockle
30/05/2011 12:54
Wonder what stats we can produce to support this short assertion or prove it a wrong assertion and assert that we are long instead?

Or we could just wait until Wednesday, see who is picked and how they perform.

Are any of these stats on English wickets in a wet May? If not they are very little guide at all.

It seems (please show me analysis if I am wrong) that;

We have signed RVDM (sounds like a WWE/TNA Wrestler)

People seem to think he is an unneccessary expense and we had similar resources already that could have been used

He's now a Somerset player so we will support him anyway and hope he adds (or does not detract) from our general side's performance.

We don't know who is in the side for Wednesday.

For lovers of obscure "Sports Entertainment" let's hope RVDM is the "Whole F'ing Show"

It might be wet where you are today, Grockle, but I don't think anyone would think, for even one second, that it has been a "wet May"!

The board's pedants would also point out that we will not be playing any T20 games in May anyway!

And yes, I hope that Van Merwe does well.

Wet June? Is that better?

Any English stats at all (or Welsh I suppose if you include Glamorgan)?

I think you know exactly what I meant.

Your WC comments mean absolutely nothing and comparisons of George and RVDM are about as useful. He's bought, he's here, he'll play. It's a done deal.

Analyse your backside off it makes little or no difference in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not sure why these debates get so heated. I was initially quite disappointed witah this signing, not because of his talents, but because I was looking forward to seeing GD who looks the real deal.

However, he is replacing KP and his batting will be far superior to MW or GD. I don't see either young spinners playing before KP's return. But when he does there will be a spin spot open in the side.

Unfortunately though, it looks like Max will have to have an unbelievable slice of luck/improvement in his game to be considered a first team regular. Through the comments it looks like GD is ahead of him already in the pecking order, and I believe that Dockrell would have played at least one CC game if he had been fit.

Personally, I'm not really that excited about the forthcoming 20/20.

The quality of the cricket is inconsistent at best, the memory of most games lasts no longexr than a few days and it has no bearing or significance on the real stuff.

I would love SCCC to win every game they play but it's not going to happen and I don't care if we don't even qualify for the Finals Day if it means we are in with a chance of winning the CC going into the last game of the season.

Give Willoughby, Kirby, Hussain and even Trescothick a rest and stick some of the squad players in and maybe give Hildreth extra captaincy experience.

Sorry NW5

But there are a 'few' people for whom this is the major fun of the year and they are paying to see the best side going out to play I'm afraid.

As Somerset are in the entertainment industry and are already possibly playing on the boundaies of legal action (if Botham's scenario comes to pass) over not telling people that Keiron wasn't going to be there for the whole event, they'll probably play their stars.

I'm happy to go to the Finals day as long as it isn't at the Rosebowl but I won't miss it if we don't get there.

The only reason I think 20/20 is useful is if young kids get to watch some cricket and get the bug. I just hope they realise the longer form of the game is much more enriching - but the days/times/entertainment package that 20/20 provides will be the initial hook for families I guess.

Grockle - I think the actual spelling is Roelof.

I think 'oe,' tends to be pronounced as an 'er,' sound as in Rudi Koetzen being pronounced 'Kertsen.'

So suspect it's 'Rerloff,' as opposed to 'rolf,' or 'roleoff.'

AGod
31/05/2011 06:19
Although the prize winning author, J M Coetzee's name is apparently pronounced with the 'oe,' sounding like the 'oo, in the word 'book,'

So that would give us 'Ruloff.'

31/05/2011 07:31
I don't know about the Roro bit, but years ago Benaud used to pronounce the surname of the then South African captain as

Really baffled by this. Not only do we not need another spinner, surely with Kirby's injury going with a seamer who bats would have been more sensible.

I can see why you might not want to play Kartik in the 20/20 but surely that's a ready made opportunity for Dockrell.

And he's not even a 'name'to attract spectators. Baffling and possibly a waste of money. Did BC think we 'had' to have an overseas signing.

A challenge for Grockle to spin this one for the club!

Grockle
31/05/2011 11:00
I'm not a 'spinner' for the club KT just as you are not always "anti Somerset" (or at least "anti Taunton").

I think you'll find if you check back a little way I have been against buying someone else in for quite some time.

Why wouldn't we want to play Kartik in the T20? Surely that is part of why we have him on our books.

I wouldn't play any seamers in T20. I'd stick with slow bowlers, with plenty of variation and have lots of batsmen and sprightly fielders, especially one at short ftm.

AGod
31/05/2011 14:10
Not even Alf Thomas, Botham?

I'd play no specialist seamers that cannot bowl yorkers on demand, unless of course the track was a green top seamer.

Alf and Lewis Gregory are surely MUST plays for their yorkers. Then again, after his performances in the the T20 and 50 over World Cups, I thought Dockrell would be a MUST play too, but I'm now unsure whether we will see him.

Grockle
31/05/2011 14:16
Well they certainly won't be taking your advice Botham. We'll have to see what they come up with tomorrow. Certainties?

Trescothick
Trego
Thomas
Kartik
Van der Meuwe
Hildreth
Buttler
Suppiah

But who will the other three be I wonder? Craig K if he is fit will be in. I assume they might try Gregory for a couple and see how he goes. Kirby?

Lots of other names will come to mind I'm sure. I personally would not play Nick Compton in this format.

I think the team will be;

Marcus
Craig (or Pete)
Pete (or Craig)
Compton
Hildreth
Buttler
Van De Merwe (I know Brian said he can bat at six but batting him ahead of Jos would put us into loony-tunes territory)
Alf
Gregory
Kartik
Dibble

I would certianly play Arul Suppiah, Grockle, but I think he's far from a certainty to play, now that we have RVdM. If it comes to a choice between Arul and Compton, I think they will favour Compton if for no other reason than the fact that he was a guy that Brian pursued hard to bring here.

Botham
31/05/2011 14:25
Kirby is not suited to 20/20, so I'm sure he'll enjoy a nice rest. I'd play Louis and Wheelie, with Kieso.

Alf can bowl slow.

AGod
31/05/2011 14:25
The team I would play would show two changes from the team that I think they will play - Suppiah for Compton and Dockrell (or Waller) at number 11 in place of Dibble. I'm assuming it's not worth risking Kirby and Hussain will be considered too erratic for T20.

Grockle
31/05/2011 14:28
But not for T20 AG.

Arul beats him hands down in quick scoring, bowling and fielding. He's also coming off a form creating performance.

I certainly wouldn't play Dibble who has yet to show me personally that he can bowl tightly under pressure. I would bowl Kirby at the start (if fit) because he can do something in a short period of time - but I wouldn't use him at the death

(Sm72)

AGod
31/05/2011 14:34
Who would you personally play, Grockle, if S P Kirby is not fit for selection? (or, more likely, it is considered more prudent to rest him even though he could play in extremis)

I don't disagree with your analysis on the quick scoring Arul vs Compton point and it's not possible to disagree on the bowling front.

Botham
31/05/2011 15:32
I agree with Grockle, from what I have seen of Dibble he's too much of a risk if someone's throwing the bat.

Suppiah is a cert.

Grockle
31/05/2011 15:37
Assuming Kirby isn't fit then we have an opening bowling problem unless we use Alf at either end and Pete straight through. The main five would be Alf, Pete, Lewis, Kartik and RVDM so...? I'd play Craig Meschede as a back up bowler with a big bat.

Coming back to work after a long weekend is really tough, and catching up with all these thoughts, opinions, counter opinions, ripostes etc, etc is such hard work.

I want us to win the thing, admittedly not as much as the CC, but getting to finals day increases our revenue and profile. This can only be beneficial to the Club. I am sure the players will be up for it and good luck to them all.

old boy!
31/05/2011 18:59
Although my view is that Max should be looking elsewhere to continue his CC education, I am sure that he has a role to play in the one dayers and 20/20. I don't remember him being overwhelmed when being called upon to bowl in those circumstances, and IMO spinners (Left arm, off breaks or legspin) can be very effective in the shorter variety of game. Because they have to be attacked rather than played on merit as in 4 day game, they can be the best option very often. The faster bowler generally go faster to the boundary!. And anyway, given the opportunity Max might be able to show some of his batting prowess. But the best thing is that his fielding abilities will be second to none.

Shahid Afridi will not be playng for Hampshire against Somerset in tomorrow`s T20 pipe-opener at The Rose Bowl. He has been refused permission by the Pakistan Cricket Board to play in any of Hampshire`s 2011 T20 matches after criticising the board over his removal as limited-over captain earlier this season.

I've been away and have to admit that my reaction to this announcement was disappointment. Just because we are allowed to do something ( have a 2nd overseas player) doesn't mean we have to-and that I think goes for Pollard as well.
I had picked my own team
Trecothick
Kieswetter
Trego
Hildreth
Buttler
Suppiah
Thomas
Gregory
Kartik
Kirby
Waller.
and for a T20 I was very happy to go with 7 bowlers -8 overs at the death from Gregory and Thomas and the other 12 shared between Suppiah Waller Kartick Kirby and Trego.
If Kirby is not fit I'd probably play Compton just in case rather than Dibble-perhaps Meschede.
Still, whatever the team I want them all to do well and although the CC is the Holy Grail, let'd win this comp if we can.

He went for 52 runs in his four overs against the likes of Loye, Law, Flintoff, Symonds and Cork in the Lancashire semi-final line-up. How times have chaged.

Looking up Wisden, I see that in the final against us Loye scored 5, Flintoff 2, Symonds 12, and Cork 1. Only Law kept the innings in some sort of shape with 59.

Why are these SKY boys going on about Lumb and how brilliant his innings was as if he is an England player in waiting? Didn't they notice that Trego went to 50 off just one less ball and HE CAN BOWL AS WELL.

Talk about dual standards...

We were totally outplayed.

Pete batted well and Kartik bowled well but far too many people were not really at the races, including Alf.

The new bowler, Roelof, looks like what Brian said he was .... a dart bowler. Might be fine if we're defending a big total but when defending a poor score you need your spinners to be of the attacking variety.

Slightly disappointed with tonights performance.
The batting never really got going and the last 2 overs we scored 9 runs, which is not good enough.
As for the bowling i think we bowled to much "length" which got smashed towards the leg side.
I will say well batted Pete and also well bowled, the one player that stood out for us tonight but we need a lot more to come to the party.

Early days but I still don't think Nick Compton should be coming in anywhere this side of 10 overs unless we are 6 down!!

He may be able to hold an innings together but he simply can't kick on. He should never come in while Arul Suppiah is sitting on the bench waiting!

Why didn't Arul get a bowl when with 8 overs gone we were going at about 9 an over? Just to see what was going on.

Liked the attitude of RvdM when he came in to bat - looked to be a man who enjoys his batting.

Missed Craig. Thought SKY underestimated the role of Pete while lauding the role of Lumb and Thommo was as rusty as a very wet iron thing. Kartik looked good.

Wasn't able to watch, and a very disappointing start, but sure we can only get better from that - with Craig back and a few more guys at the races, will be surprised if we don't qualify to next stage...and don't forget Kartik, Thomas and RvdM are straight off the plane (there may be a lesson there, esp after the Mendis debut).

I think you have a point Geordie. Before he would have had a month or more to get his length sorted on English wickets, he's now had a pretty ambiguous start to this summer with variable use in India and then he has to come here and get it right.

Kartik, who was hardly used has had a less vague start and was on the money from over 2.

Strange that Alf looked rusty and Kartik did not, give their respective level of usage by Pune.

Realistically after the start we had we were unlikely to win unless Jos and Pete batted in tandem for a while but instead it was Compton and Pete that had the only partnership of note and that meant rapid scoring from one end only.

02/06/2011 07:50
As I said the other day, I thought we knew a few months ago that Pollard was signed only for the second half of the T20 (rightly or wrongly) and that we'd at least be looking for another overseas player for the first 8 games (again, rightly or wrongly). I'm surprised that that seems to have come as a surprise to some...?

Hants had also won all of one cricket game this year.

One suspects that they see the T20 as a chance to kick-start their season, particularly as they will also have Imran Tahir available for the CC resumption.

I'd imagine Cork and the coach (whoever it is?) would have stressed "This is the chance to get our season flying."

I did think the Hants performance in the field was excellent.

Yes - Mascarenhas and Cork bowled very well and they certainly held their catches. I was expecting to see a very demoralised Hampshire side after the recent suggestions of "trouble in't dressing room", but nothing could have been further from the truth. Good communications in the field and lots of encouragement and geeing each other up. They deserved the victory, much to the enjoyment of the gloating Hants fans I went with, who were very pessimistic about their chances prior to the start.

Well all the SKY guys went for us without hesitation and then backtracked from about the 8th over of their reply.

We were a bit flat in the field - unusual for us nowadays and a necessary 'fix' before Sunday. Maybe it is to do with 3 guys coming in upsetting the CC setup and having to reset themselves as a unit. Thommo and MK have been away a long time and RdvM is a completely new additon (Compo was on the mike and temporarily forgot his name at one point). He plays for the Titans, is that ZdB's side or Alf's?

Craig back on Sunday I assume - not sure who he will be coming in for though hope it isn't Arul because I think he has a lot to offer to this form of the game. He can provide the holding role. He can score quickly if required, he bowls and he fields well

As you probably all know I would wish it to be Nick personally but if it isn't then AS seems the only other option. Lewis or a seamer has to be kept in or we will be going with a predominantly spin based attack.

Interesting.

Whilst we were well beaten by a good, fired up Hants it is the case that our prep was very short/non existent. A point made by Tres post-match and endorsed by Cork.

Our only T20 prep match was rained off and we did look a bit at sea in the field.

Lots of shots from Adams and Lumb fired thru' deep mid wicket - without the necessary cover didn't help either.

Did Cork "endorse," the point that OUR preparation was very short/non existent or did he say that Counties in general (presumably including Hants) had had very little preparation time because the games started as soon as the last CC round was finished?

Have to say, though, that neither us nor Hants were involved in the most recent round of CC games.

We'll see how we go at "disgusted of Tunbridge Wells," but one does wonder if there is some sort of preparation issue which leads to poor starts for us. It's happened for the last couple of years (and I think actually three?) in the CC and in last year's T20, I think we lost 3 of our first 5, including home defeats by both Essex and Surrey.

I'm not sure, Mike?

Hants somehow looked better organised than we did but whether that was simply a function of them being "more up for it," or simply executing their plans better ( as opposed to them having made more thorough plans) I do not know.

But we're obviously a pretty strong CC team - or have been for the last few years - and yet have formed a habit of slow starts - even Marcus has said so, and we were certainly a strong T20 team last season, but we started with poor results there, too.

Kent hope to include Simon Cook, their leading T20 wicket-taker last season, in their side at Tunbridge Wells tomorrow. He had a run with the Seconds this week after injury.

Their seamer ranks will also include Azhar Mahmood, who was rested from their last cc match, and T20 signing Charl Langeveldt. But all-rounder Darren Stevens, who they used to open the bowling in last summer`s tournament, will only bat as he has a shoulder injury.

Squad: Key, Denley, Northeast, van Jaarsveld, Stevens, Jones, Tredwell, Ball, Coles, Joseph, Riley, Mahmood, Shaw, Cook and Langeveldt.

Saw us batter them at Beckenham last season BUT we were 117 for 4 when Pollard was bowled by Bandara - so the game could have gone either way at that point - but then Jos came out and absolutely battered them.

Because these games are so short it's usually the case that only one or two batsmen on either team really get in. Whether you go on to win the game depends, in large part, IMO, on which of your batsmen are the ones that get in.

From our team yesterday we'd ideally want two of Tres, Pete and Jos to get in. But only one of them did so.

If your guys that get in are the ones that struggle to exceed a strike rate of 100, a team will usually struggle to win the game.

AG - in the post match interviews Tres said, without making it an excuse, that because we had just finished a 4 day match and had our only T20 prep match rained off our prep was very poor (and that teams neede more time to prep). There were four days available to prepare for that match and we decided to take two of them off for a bit of a break before launching our Twenty20 campaign.
In retrospect, that proved a mistake. The practice match we planned between ourselves at Taunton was rained off, so we only really had one day of preparation to face Hampshire and it wasn't enough.
You have to change your entire mental approach and technique for 20-over cricket, the batsmen setting aside all fear and looking to hit different areas with their shots and the bowlers having to adjust their lengths.
Hampshire had two practice games ahead of playing us and it showed. We were outplayed on the night and then got down to some serious practice ahead of the Kent match. That proved the platform for van der Merwe to show exactly why we signed him. His 89 off 51 balls, included six sixes and seven fours, demonstrated what a destructive hitter he can be in addition to his considerable bowling and fielding skills.

I wonder who decided for the players to have time off, I knew the practise match was called off because of the weather and the following day the day before the match against Hampshire all they had was nets even though the players weren’t travelling to Hampshire until the morning of the match.

"You have to change your entire mental approach and technique for 20-over cricket, the batsmen setting aside all fear and looking to hit different areas with their shots and the bowlers having to adjust their lengths."

What's done is done but I am more troubled by the notion that the reverse must also be true. Will we have enough practice time ahead of Edgbaston to get our practice in for the far, FAR more important game up there?
