We welcome the Bristolians back to the County Ground to resume the 40 over campaign after a long lay off. The Somerset side will be at fulll strength but the format of that side is still a matter for debate as Marcus will return and the middle order has to find places for Nick Compton, Alviro Petersen and James Hildreth. The lattter missed out in the T20 Quarter Final...will he do so again. Chris Jones is the payer who misses out in the squad according to early reports.

The weather is set fair for today's game and a victory is a must have for a side looking at a long fight to make something out of a disapppointing seasoon and prepare us for staying a first class Chhammpioonship side in 2014. Marcus Trescothick will return to the captain's wheel and he has a squad of 15 to pick from.
His most likely side will consist of
Craig Kieswetter, Jos Buttler, Alviro Petersen, Peter Trego, a perm from James Hildreth and Nick Compton, one of George Dockrell and Max Waller (or both?), Afonso Thomas, Craig Meschede, Steve Kirby and or Jamie Overton
There are others who may be part of this make-up but those names will be foating about the 11 man team sheet.

Lets turn our attention to Sunday the YB40 against Gloucester.
I had to look at the tables to remind me of the situation of the competition, we need to win this match on Sunday, Gloucester have a game in-hand and on the same points has us, a win will give us a cushion knowing Gloucester can only draw level on points if they win their game in-hand.
It is a tight group on points we must keep winning.
I think Marcus will return if he is able!

In all honesty, Gloucestershire are not all that good and I think it would be poor if we don't manage to beat them.
You don't beat your opponents, you don't win the competition. Somerset need wins in everything for all kinds of reasons.
We need to win 8 cricket matches between now and the end of the season to win 40 over comp and avoid relegation will be tough.

Glamorgan have included former England fast bowler Simon Jones in their squad of 12 for the YB40 floodlit match at Cardiff on Monday (start 4.40pm).
Squad: Rees, Wallace, Cooke, North, Allenby, Goodwin, Wright, Cosker, Hogan, S. Jones, A. Jones and Slater.

Between 2006 and, say, 2010, Goodwin may well have ranked second only to Marcus as most effective proper batsman on the circuit?

With improved recent second XI form then maybe we should be looking to re-intergrate Lewis Gregory into our one-day side?
With Jamie Overton to miss Edgbaston then it might be prudent to not over-use Alf/Kirby in the run-up to Aug 20 as they may have a LOT of bowling to do.
By the same token that might mean that Adam Dibble should get a Pro 40 game this week as we will need somebody to take Jamie's place at Edgbaston and I'm not sure that we'll want to pick Hussain?

I agree entirely Bagpuss. Nick has got his limited overs act well up and running- and he s the man for me. My big hope is for a decent score from Marcus.

Not disagreeing with the team Geordie but if that's the batting order you've got them in I wouldn't see much point in Compton at 6. I'd let him open and set out to bat through and let the rest go for it. Maybe that's what Marcus needs just to go for his shots!!!

Could we hazard a guess about the difference between Gemaal's and Alviro's daily pay?? 400-500%?? I don't really have a clue but I reckon it would be something like that?

Alviro hasn't done much wrong. I would play him. He is contracted till 18th August and his salary will have been reduced pro rata for the time he was bench warming for SA in the champions trophy and the Sri Lankan tour.
Marcus will play. This is a unit he has been successful with and he'll return to it. The more interesting question is WHERE in the line-up will he stand.

IMO we tend to underestimate the amount men (and probably women) grow and fill out until their early to mid twenties. I guess this is the reason why there are strict rules on how much bowling young quickies particularly are allowed to bowl in first class cricket. It probably explains why there is always the danger of aches and pain and sometimes stress related fractures in the growing bodies of some young cricketers.
Last Sunday game of the season, local derby, I reckon it could be 5500/6000 come 2/2.30pm, are the blue temporary stands still in place?

Hildreth excluded again. Given their comparitive athleticism in the field, really do think JH should have played this one ahead of Tres (even if there isn't much to choose between them in terms of batting form, or lack thereof).

old boy!: I am sure that when I saw you at Taunton a few days ago you were distinctly bigger than when we met at Horsham earlier in the summer. With a winter in the gym or a stint in the Big Bash, I reckon you'll be a fine unit at the start of next season, all set to challenge the combined Overteenies for a place in the side.

I'm struggling to see the benefit of playing both Alviro and Nick at the expense of James in one dayers but as some have alluded it probably has more to do with Nick's future than any issue with Hilda's form

Had an off day in the field apart from Max, but the 2nd half was really exciting.
Unfortunately with Thursday's game starting at 13.45 and me finishing work at 5, I'll be playing bridge instead, but hopefully they'll be a few holiday-makers to boost the crowd.

It must have been a very entertaining afternoon. Kieswetter has been a tower of strength recently; and also good to see MT, PT and NC in the runs.
I listened to some of it on the local (non-BBC) radio and I was very impressed by the commentators I heard.

It should be noted that Kirby bowled two successive bowls for 4 wides at the end of their innings.
Tres looked back to his best to me, some thumping shots in that innings, 2 bits of luck with inside edges but really looked good to me and took good catch to get rid of him.
Trego too was excellent on the back of a great start.
Kiesy was just outstanding, great to see how he has matured, he id really cashing in on this great bit of form, to see it home shows huge promise.
Bowling was ordinary and fielding really not up to its normal standard at all bar Max.
Saying that though it really was not a fair contest, we are just in a different league to that lot. I'm not sure 1 of their team would get in ours, maybe Klinger but even then not in the top 3!

Without Klinger we could have been done by 5pm.
These are the types of teams we face joining if we don't sort things out in the championship.
The smaller counties like Glos, Glam, Worcs, Leics, Kent don't have the budgets/squads to compete with the big boys.

Yep, I said it would be a poor show if we couldn't beat Gloucs. They are weak.

I don't think we are in the financial mess that some of those mentioned are in WSM. We won't be after this season either even if we go down.

Chris Dent luck came to an end when he edged a catch to Craig Kieswetter off Jamie Overton.
James Fuller was expecting this ball to bounce higher off Jamie Overton it went over his back.
Max Waller enjoying his bowling but James Fuller didn't, he bowled him.
Max also enjoys his fielding always with a smile on his face especially after catching Ian Cockbain off Alviro Petersen.
Steve Kirby had a bad time today with some of his overs, Marcus had to have a word with him at one point, in saying that he also bowled some good balls especially this one to Michael Klinger he just kept it out.

I'd like to think we would be right up there next year if we were to go down.

We have already have possible replacements WSM. Chris Jones and Craig Meschede (though he bowls instead of keeps - good job really). We need an Arul Suppiah replacement WSM (could be Lewis but I'm not convinced I have to say or Alex with the same lack of confidence)
Great win well led by Marcus. It appeared to me as if he had decided that he was going to attack every ball bowled to him. A sort of innings which was without fear, or I just want to get a lot of frustration out of my system. A few dot balls where the ball was well fielded, including the hardest drive I've ever seen him make to mid off where Klinger stopped brilliantly and saved any runs. Of the 28 balls Marcus faced, there were 7 fours and most of the rest were singles because he was hitting the ball so hard to the fielders. I do not remember even one defensive shot. Great entertainment, and lets hope he has turned the corner.

I hope you are correct 'Old Boy' I didn't see it quite like that but there was a lot of encouragement especially from any loose balls bowled at him.
My main point is Mike - did you see him block one ball, as opposed to Craig who deadbatted many? And the ball that Klinger fielded at Mid Off very near to your position was a brilliant piece of cricket.

Nothing wrong with that, you seem to know him quite well and I understand you taught him so naturally you have some affiliation.For both Lewis and Alex, I don't believe you have the same connection but are willing to speculate on their mental capacity (confidence) from the side lines. From what I have seen of both, they are highly talented cricketers, with a great work ethic and are determined to make a success of their fledgling county cricket careers. Not only that, I'm sure they want to build on their International recognition, both being England U19 players. They are a year younger than Chris, still finding their way in first class cricket as are all our young recruits. In my opinion, we have a great bunch of young players and they are all, the future of Somerset cricket. Do Chris and Meshy have more confidence? Well, I can speculate like you, but what I do know is that they all have talent. Confidence grows with experience, is built through practice, enhanced with praise. So I'm adding my support not only to Lewis and Alex but to all our young cricketers.Should Jos or Nick choose to move on, I have no doubt that Lewis, Alex, Chris or Meshy, have the ability and desire to become forthright replacements.

They are a year younger than Chris, still finding their way in first class cricket as are all our young recruits. In my opinion, we have a great bunch of young players and they are all, the future of Somerset cricket. Do Chris and Meshy have more confidence? Well, I can speculate like you, but what I do know is that they all have talent. Confidence grows with experience, is built through practice, enhanced with praise. So I'm adding my support not only to Lewis and Alex but to all our young cricketers.Should Jos or Nick choose to move on, I have no doubt that Lewis, Alex, Chris or Meshy, have the ability and desire to become forthright replacements.
I have doubts about their position Just In rather than their mental capacity. I'm not sure if Lewis is looking for a batsman or a bowling berth (I'd suggest batting because I'm unsure his body is up to bowling). Our ground fielding was not great with several fumbles in the field which led to second runs. Max of course is excluded from any such criticism. He was electric again and batters were always cautious when he was swooping onto the ball.
The bowling was tough on such a good pitch but, as noted by others, Kirbs had an uncharacteristic blip with two pretty wold leg-side wides in one over. That said apart from Max Klinger (for all M*A*S*H fans!) the Gloucs batters did not get away from us and the total looked rather gettable.

I'm a bit bemused Grockle, that you've twice mentioned in your last few posts about Chris Jones having other options, which he might take up. That was always my understanding, too. But when I posted a few weeks ago to say that I'd seen an article about Jones in which he said he was definitely going to give cricket a "damn good go" before considering anything else you asked me something to the effect of "why on earth shouldn't that be the case?"
As to the young players as a group - in terms of first-class cricket we've had one encouraging innings each from Jones and Barrow in first-class cricket this season. The former in the tour game, the latter probably saving us from what would otherwise have been a CC defeat.
Both men will probably get more chances between now and the end of the season, with AP off and Jos having other games to play in.
I really, really hope they are able to build on those previous innings THIS season, because now should be when their confidence is up. Barrow has also had at least two (maybe three?) successive tons at second XI level in recent weeks.
But if the SCCC strategy for when Jos leaves (as he surely will) and if NC leaves is really going to be to say that we don't need to add anyone and "we're just going with our group of talented youngsters", then ways urgently need to be found to expedite the development of said youngsters.

I know you tend to disregard any cricket that is not played with a red ball but Chris ones also made 53* in a T20 match, which is reasonably significant too.

Unfortunately, since the start of the T20 window, he seems to be going downhill at a rate of knots, Ronnie.
His season, prior to that, looked as though it could go either way but now I'd be very surprised if he does anything between now and the end of the season.
IMO the dropping of James for the third match running (at this time in his career) will surely persuade him to ask the DOC if he really rates him - if not I can see a request coming in from him " Can you tear up my contract and I will go somewhere where I am wanted". IMO James would be one of the first names on my list - those left in had better score big otherwise, a lot of us will be wondering about the DOC's competence for that job - everything he has tried this season to date has turned to dust! A nice chap though!

A lot of slightly odd and premature conjecture above I note. I think it's entirely possible that DN, MT and probably JH himself have had a chat, noted that James has played nearly every game this season, and said, while AP is still here, let's give James a week off, re-charge the batteries, then come back after Alviro has to go.
As far as I know, there's no indication at all that JH is unhappy or another one in the exit queue - maybe he was just deemed deserving of a week's rest.

I doubt JH would have volunteered for a week off!!! I don't think professional players are generally in the habit of doing that.
That's a nice thought, SP, that I'd like to believe is true. JH probably would benefit from a week off, but surely it should be a week away from cricket altogether. Yet he was twelfth man at The Oval and I think he may have been twelfth man yesterday as well, though I don't know for sure or whether he was involved today. A week off should not involve going to the office every day.

Well, Grockle James doesn't have the option of picking himself. DN and/or Tres could have 'discussed' with JH that they wanted JH to rest but that's not the same thing as suggesting that JH would be happy about it.

Have I blamed DN for Petersen's lack of one day form?? You know I haven't! I blame him for picking him INSTEAD of JAMES! However, he gets paid to make those decisions and, surely he can expect criticism if he gets it wrong! I would assume by the same token he would expect to receive praise if he had got it right.
They should coast home from here. May have been an important toss? Did pitch start damp or something? Or Hogan just too good for us?

You have as much idea about whether James is unhappy or happy about it as I have about whether he was party to the present team selection. Please don't suggest that your theory has any more weight than anyone else's AG.
We rest other players who have long and arduous seasons and there is no reason why James cannot be rested or appreciate the chance to recharge batteries for an important role in the next few matches.

I agree there's no reason why James shouldn't be rested, but three consecutive games seems excessive, particularly given Marcus's form at the moment.

With too many senior middle order players for the places available and factoring in that one of them is being courted to stay at the club I don't think this is a normal situation.
It hasn't worked but I did say that this decision may have been taking on the perception at the tie and not on hindsight from us looking at it now. Having said that we did not lose the last one.

By "vastly superior start", AG, I assume that you are referring to the fact that they scored one run before losing their first wicket?
I know IDB was dropped Grockle, that was my point.

Kirbs the most economical bowler and presently highest wicket taker in game again. But this looks like Glamorgan's unless there is a real fightback from the boys in the last 10. Less than 50 needed.

Why don't you use your search facility and you'll find that 'certain' posters have recently improved Kirby for much improved bowling, but why let that get in the way of an opportunity to have a dig?

In Peter Trego`s second over, Wallace shimmied down the wicket to the third ball and Craig K appealed for a catch behind.
The umpire gave him not out, but quick as a flash Craig realised Wallace was still well out of his crease, underarmed the ball at the stumps and, for a rare once, actually hit them.
Three or four Somerset players immediately appealed for the stumping, but unfortunately square leg umpire Richard Kettleborough (usually one of the better ones) was still looking at the umpire at the bowler`s end to see what decision he had given on the `caught behind` appeal.
So his attention wasn`t on the key moment the stumps were broken, and plainly he couldn`t give Wallace out. So Wallace remained to hit a quick-fire 70 that was the deciding factor in Glamorgan getting home by one wicket.

Doesn't mask a very hurtful loss and now 2 wins may not be enough but going to be tight and RR may help us come the end, but as usual we are making it hard for ourselves.

But they did come second in the CC (joint best-ever finish) the year before we beat Leics in the C & G Final, if memory serves.
I think Cotham was never anything but the bowling coach and Dermot was head coach that year but, it seems, partial to powder and never here. Not really Kev's fault as he was dropped into the job from First Team coach. Didn't we also win the T20 with him in charge as well?

I think Botham was asking because Lucy and Turner Junior (who may not be as Junior any more) continued to come to the ground as spectators for a while after Rob left Somerset and then posted for a short time after she stopped doing that.

Nothing that happens between now and the end of the season will stop that happening and if by some miracle we are all idiots or have been on another planet for the spring and summer, those who have watched should demand it at the local and full AGM if it isn't announced.

I meant more that it might affect the internal review within the club. In life, I think it's human nature that people do not wish to think that they have failed and will therefore search for indications that they have instead succeeded - a trophy is an obvious such indication.
As to whether supporters would take notice of something like that? I think it depends. I would assume that, like other clubs, we have some fans who are mainly only interested in the short-form cricket?
Difficult to think you have not failed when they quite obviously have - you do post some stuff AG..... worst championship season in nearly 10 years, the loss of possibly two major players, the lack of form of many of its remaining experienced stock?

Rather than 'papering over the cracks' maybe qualifying for the latter stages of the YB40 would do a lot to boost team morale for the latter part of the season as they go into the final crucial CC matches. It might even remind a couple of important team members that playing for Somerset is o bad thing. Just a thought.
Grockle - I assume that the person leading a review of the cricket side would be DN and he has no record at Somerset to inform my view (or, I assume, anyone else's) as to how he might regard the season - and what effect a one-day trophy might have on how the season was regarded.
I have always wondered about the "scattergun" approach of "going for every competion" and more so when we have a desperate CC fight on our hands now. Will a good win tomorrow put players in a winning frame of mind for next week anymore than getting them to totally concentrate on the next four day game , (then the one after that). The CC has to be all important, surely. Let the majority of the seconds play Yorkshire.

I have to say that in the past there most certainly have been officials within the club who have seen their role more as an ego trip than as a responsibility to the owners of the club – i.e. the Members.

Back to qualification, 2 wins should ensure us qualification on 17 points. With Glam, Gloucs and the Sex playing each other only one of them can exceed that total and of the other divisions, only Northants could come second with 17 points. In that circumstance our RR is so far superior that it is unlikely to be breached and we will qualify as best second place.

Was today`s event at the SWALEC stadium in Cardiff the first-ever one day match between first class counties to be watched by less than 100 spectators?

If you remember about a season ago Mr Reagan (I think it was) was suggesting supporting the SWALEC by getting Somerset, Gloucs and Glamorgan to play all their games there - daft bat!!

Glos win was the right result for us. If we beat Glos we qualify for the semi . If we lose it is unlikely that we shall be the best second.( I have discounted Glam winning both their remaining matches by enormous margins) In Group A Notts and Northants with a win could end with 18 and 16 although if Northants lose we would be a better second than them. If both lose we end upon of the 2 best 1sts.
In group B Lancs and Hants are on 16 and 13, and play each other. A Hants win wins them the group and Lancs could only get to 15.Essex are in with an outside shout of going from 12 to 16 put they are Lancs other opponents.
So win next Mon and we are there. A loss means unlikely but not impossible if everything else was to go our way.

A tie would've given Glamorgan a point, putting them on 14 with 2 games still to play.
They could've then ended up with 18 points. If Somerset win against Gloucestershire on BHM they will be on 17 points.
Todays's result gives Somerset best chance of topping the group.
But they have to win at Bristol on Monday!

I would expect that the Monday semifinal would be more likely to go to a tie on a ground with floodlights,so long as one of the two home sides has them. Sky would surely prefer to show a day/night fixture.

It will be hard to get a home draw with Hampshire having two game remaining on 16 points, it could depend on Notts.
England have a one day international on the Sunday which is presumably the reason for the Monday scheduling.
As the ECB never tire of telling us how well England tickets sell it would have made more sense to switch these two matches and have the 2nd s-f on the Sunday.

I judge that Notts have to lose,then it would be us if we in, and Hants who still have to beat Lancs.
The ODI dates will have been aranged and agreed with Cricket Australia way before the domestic schedule was even thought about - I had a ticket application form for that Old Trafford ODI back at the end of August last year; the members period for applying for international tickets was somewhere around the 2nd week of September. With a large number of tickets already sold it would have been impossible to switch the dates once the domestic schedule was organised.
Of course someone at the ECB could have looked ahead - but why break the habits of a lifetime! History suggests that the size of crowds at county matches is not that high on the list of priorities for the ECB, its up to the counties to do the best with what they are given.

If I remember correctly Gary's son is called George and he has some illness that Gary works for charity for.
I remember his eldest having leukaemia as a baby - he does all sorts of charity work now also Blood Transfusion Service adverts. Cant remember how long ago that was now, although it feels like about 10 years its obviously much longer!

It was George and he had leukaemia. He survived the disease so he will be in his 20's now.
I think it was their first child that had leukaemia and as Matt was born in 1987 it would make him too old
George, Harry, Tobias, and Angus are the names of Gary Linekar's children, so not related (wiki entry)

And as far as cricket goes, I believe he played for Leicestershire Second XI.
