Last Roll of the CC dice? Durham at Taunton

As I expect "Farmer" to possibly cover the last day of this game I though a summary of the first 3 days might be useful-ish. Archie Vaughan makes his first class debut in a game we really must win to have any chance of getting anywhere our next opponents in the Championship at Taunton. How did it go then?
CC1 v Durham @ Taunton Thursday August 29 - September 1 2024
Somerset won the toss and decided to bat first with a side filled with spinners on a pitch we all expect to have turn in it. The side is;
Umeed, Goldsworthy, Lammonby, Abell, Banton, Vaughan, Rew, Gregory, Overton, Aldridge, Leach
A first class debut for Archie Vaughan is the first news of the day. The fact that we have picked four spinners for a home game is the second and the third is that Andy Umeed is out to a straight one first up at 10:59!! Tom Lammonby is 'opening' after one ball.
He gets a 'spitter' from Hogg before he has really started and goes for 9 at 31 fir 2 and we have Tom Abell in with less than 10 overs gone. He pushes the score to 40 by that point and the 50 arrives 2 overs later as the innings settles down a little. The Durham attack of Hogg and Carse is workmanlike and has pace and variation so the scoring is not easy and Lewis Junior knicks one from Carse at 68 which puts us on the backfoot enough for Parkinson to be introduced in the 16th to see how much spin there is in this wicket. Abell and Banton take us to 82 by the 20th and the 100 arrives just before the 25th. So scoring is steady but nothing spectacular though the 50 partnership does sort of creep up on us off 86 balls just before they go in for Lunch at 120 for 3 with Tom A at 37 and Tom B with 27.
After the break Tom Abell moves on to 50 from 92 balls with 9 fours at 147 just before bringing up the 150 in the 38th followed quite quickly by the 100 partnership with a straight four off Raine. Banton converts his efforts into a 50 from 75 balls with 6 fours and a six at 175 and these two have moved the game on considerably.
With the 200 reached in the 48th the monumental century from our in form batsman in this format Tom Abell is almost inevitable a little later at 213. A hundred majestic runs with some sublime touches off 148 balls with 16 almost totally sumptuous boundaries is the mainstay of a revitalised innings with excellent and mature support from Mr Banton at the other end. At 218 a 150 partnership arrive and the two Toms pass the record 4th wicket partnership of Jamie Cox and James Hildreth at Taunton in 2004 quite soon after that as by the 60th over they have moved on to 243 and then on to 250 via a scrappy single through the keeper's legs to achieve the first batting bonus point.
Parkinson has been wheeling in for some time now (the fate of the spinner) and he finally gets a reward 3 runs later as Abell misjudges one and is caught behind by Borthwick for an excellent 124 from 181 balls. In comes Rew and as seems to be more normal than you think, Banton is then dismissed in exactly the same way for 73 at 260 and we go into Tea with Rew and Vaughan at the crease and 262 for 5 on the board.
At the start of the third session of Day 1 Rew worries all watching with an early reverse sweep to bring up the 300 but a solid debutant helps him put up another 50 partnership from 76 balls in the 31st over. Durham take the new ball in the hope with will do more than the cloth rag that the Kookaburra becomes after the shine has left it. The bowling rate on the first day has been very good, lots of slow bowlers one assumes. We will bowl the required rate of overs and that is such a surprise that the stats people start to go to their records to see when it last happened!!
Meanwhile out in the middle a decent first knock for Archie comes to an end as he is ajudged LBW for 30 facing Hogg at 328. He certainly did npot look out of place in the middle and a times there were slight reminicences of 'Dad' in some confident drives etc. A good start.
Vaughan is replaced by Aldridge who helps his partner Rew to 50 (71 balls 5 fours and 1 six) at 338 for 6. They move on to 350 and then another 50 partnership from 75 balls at the end of the 96 and Day 1 ends with a satisfying 395 for 6 off the required quota of overs and a score we would have taken very very happily at 0 for 1 after 1 ball 1 minute before the official start of the game!!
Day 2
Welcome to 'Grockles Day' at Taunton as we celebrate together on LoL's 75th anniversary of the first game he ever saw at Taunton. He was 6, it was 1949 and he failed to see his county win a game until 1957. Now there is loyalty. To celebrate this event it seems the Grocklees have swarmed!! As well as "LoL" we have "Bobstan", "Wickham", "Bloke", "Grizzers", "Farmer White", "Sheffield Sabre", "Mike TA1", "Tractor" and others whose pseudonyms I don't remember or have ever known. "Loyal of Lhasa" has predicted we will reach 540 all out by lunch today. His prediction starts well as we pass 400 in the first over from Parkinson and James Rew moves into the 90s. He passes the 3 figure target for the EIGTH time in his career (he's 20!!) with an edged four at 417 (112 balls with 12 fours and a six). He then edges the next one into Turner's hands off Carse and its 417 for 7. This means he leaves to a very generous level of applause (what a talent this man is) and is replaced by Lewis Senior who then pushes the score to 450 and helps Kasey producec another solid 50 partnership from 71 balls at 467 before Aldridge is caught behind off the consistent bowling of Parkinson.
In comes Craig Overton who isn't messing about as he hits 2 conscitive sixes in his first over but is caught by Carse going for Drissell for 19 off 14 at 492. Not sure why we are suddenly 'going for it' in such a manner when a more measured approach has been producing runs at a sufficient pace while we have maximum batting points over only 3 and a bit sessions and have 7 periods of the game left. However out comes last man Jack Leach to help Gregory move us over 500 only for his partner to take on Parkinson four balls later and perish without adding to the score caught in the deep by Lees. We finish on 492 all out some 40 minutes before Lunch leaving fans with a feeling there was more there for the taking. But a solid first innings score and maximum bonus points is not to be sneered at and we get a chance at the Durham openers either side of the Lunch break.
COve opens against Lees and McKinney with 30 minutes at the opposition, he gives away 5 runs. Gregory partners him from the River and within 6 overs we have the spinners on with Archie taking first blood at 25 having McKinney LBW as part of a debut wicket maiden. Lunch arrives at 29 for 1.
In the afternoon session, captain Borthwick stands his ground with his opener Lees, pushing the score past 50 before helping his partner move towards that individual milestone. We finally send him on his way for 35 at 86 courtesy of 'Buckethands' Overton off the bowling of Leach. Robinson joins his teammate and together they push the score past the 3 figure mark before the Overton/Leach partnership strikes again at 128 sending Robinson on his way.Turner comes to the middle but his stay is brief as he becomes Leach's third wicket bowled for 6 at 136. Lees' strubborn resistance continues as Durham go in for Tea at 150 for 4.
Jack Leach has twirled away with 20 over 0 maidens 67 for 3 mostly with partner Vaughan who is experiencing a spinner's bowling debut with 14 overs 2 maidens 42 for 1. However the last session of ythe day is started with a couple of overs from Kasey and Andy Umeed before Lewis Goldsworthy is tried for the first time and finally sends Lees on his way via an incredible low left handed catch at a very fine slip from Craig how he got down to it so quickly is beyond me but it was a superb piece of reaction. 152 for 5 with Less gone for a fighting 59 from 128 balls. The'downward' slope of the visitor's innings is helped when Carse runs De Leede out for 16 at 170. However he then works hard to make up for it with a substantial partnership with next man Raine which takes his side past 200, provides a 71 ball 50 partnership, passes 250 off 72 overs closely followed by his 86 balls 50 at 251 with 7 overs left in the day. The day ends with Durham at 273 for 6 and in a much better state than they were. Once again we have completed the overs requred in the day (we actually bowled more than required to get to the 6pm finish time!!)
Day 3
The day starts with both Carse (59 from 113) and Raine (52 from 100) looking to re-establish a very succesful partnership and push past the follow on total of 343. However, Jack Leach has other ideas as he partners with Overton again to dismiss Raine at 287. The catch is so close that it is taken behind the keeper. Drissell, "ex of this parish", is the next man in and he cuts the ball for four to take his side past 300 before being tucked up by Aldridge and being forced to present an easy catch to Tom Banton running in from midwicket. This seemed like a plan and the plan worked!! There is a 'buzz in the crowd as Hogg is victim of an excellent diving catch from Rew off Aldridge at 305 and the last pair are at the crease. However, Carse is not impressed and deposits his next ball on the Thatcher's terrace as he looks for his hundred and that 343 total.
2 sixes take the combative bat to 104 from 161 balls with 4 sixes and Durham to only 9 needed to avoid the follow on. But Leach will not be denied his 5-fer and he cleans up Parkinson who is caught short by Banton to end the Durham resistance at 336 for 9. The England spinner finishes with 5 for 124 in 41.1 overs backed up by his two young spinning partners in Vaughan and Goldsworth and the 'Kookaburra King' Kasey with 2. We do not enforce and with a lead of 158, our opening pair take the field before the break with Andy Umeed on a 'King pair' which he deals with by coming up the wicket to his first balls and sending it over the rope on the Somerset stand side of the ground. He doesn't make it to lunch though as there seems to be a distinct set of order and he slogs one to the boundary just before lunch only to be caught by Drissell off Parkinson for 28 at 37 for 1. We go into the break 199 ahead at 41.
After lunch we move 200 ahead straigaway while Lammonby and Goldsworthy are a little circumspect as the afternoon unfolds, passing 50 before the 15th nd producing a 50 partnership at 89 for 1 with the 250 lead arriving by the 22nd with the 100 up in the innings coming with the next over.
Lammonby is bowled by Drissell for 36 at that score playing inside one and Tom Abell is nearly there for a short time as he is dropped at slip by Borthwick at 118. However the next wicket is Lewis Junior who offers an outside edge off Parkinson at 136 while a reverse sweep from Abell at 144 moves Somerset past 150 in the 35th. Banton has orders it seems and is going after the Durham bowlers with a vengeance as he hits Drissell for 2 sixes in the 37 to parts of the MT. He then tries the same with Parkinson so the intent is obviously there. This re-introduces Carse but does not stop the 50 partnership arriving at 187. This is then moved on to a 350 lead with another Banton six to the CA this time. The prediction just before Tea is that TB will go to 50 or be out. The result is the latter as he tries to get over the infield and simply plops the ball to Drissell off Carse to depart for 46 off 28. Big and beefy but too short. 197 for 4 with Rew striding out. The pair take the score over 200 and to 209 for 4 at Tea with 32 overs to go but the light has deteriorated considerably and does not look like it will get very much better in the medium term.
After the Tea break we are wondering what will happen. The Durham fielders are doing everything they can to suggest that the light is worse than it is though De Leede does get Abell caught behind for 56 at 228. They finally get their wish when Carse is re-introduced with the score on 263 for 5 at 4:50 in the afternoon when the umpires offer the light and the players troop off. The umpires stay out but it does feel like the Edgbaston situation again as it looks highly unlikely that there will be any more play. Most fans believe that to be the case as they stream home.
However, it seems that there was a difference of opinion and although the umpires were happy to continue with spinners, Durham were unwilling to not use Carse. This led to an impasse that is finally broken when Lewis Gregory offers to declare and only use spinners for the rest of the day's play. Durham agree to this and umpire Mike Burns announces that play will resume at 6:05 with 14 overs left after a declaration by Somerset at 263 leaving the visitors a score of 420 to get for the win.
The number of people now watching this on livestream in amazement from their homes see a not so willing Durham return to the crease with the sole objective of seeing out the day's play. This is not helped by Lees and McKinney taking on the arm of Tom Abell at the start of the second over. They lose the race between the wickets AND McKinney with only 1 on the board. The suppoerters who have stayed are very much up for this and Borthwick walks out to take control of things and get his county to the finishing line on Day 3. However Lees snicks one from Jack to the safe hands of Overton (his fifth of the game) at the end of the 9th at 15 for 2. This becomes worse for the skipper and 15 for 3 when he receives an absolute peach of a ball from Archie Vaughan at the start of the 10th which feathers into the stumps and bowls him to the delight of the young man who sprints around the pitch in celebration. It is unfortunatye for Durham and a hell of a turnaround in the day but with nightwatch bats at both ends with Drissell and Parkinson, they go into Day 4 needing the majority of the 420 still at 15 for 3. Quite a day!!

Somerset welcome back captain Lewis Gregory, who will have his groin injury managed by the selectors for the rest of the season, and add Archie Vaughan to the players on duty for last week`s return to championship duty at Warwickshire.
Durham, who are seeking the double over Somerset, include paceman Brydon Carse after three months on the injured list, but will be without top-order batter Colin Ackermann for family reasons. Squad: Borthwick (c), Clark, Carse, de Leede, Drissell, Hogg, Jones, Lees, McKinney, Minto, Parkinson, Raine, Robinson, Turner.

As said above by CJM, Migael Pretorius has picked up an injury and has returned to South Africa so that's him for 2024.
Riley Meredith has been called to the Australia ODI side v Scotland to cover bowling inhuries. He may be available for the white ball knockouts but that may be about it.
Ben Green, Ned Leonard & Alfie Ogborne are all out on loan until after this game I believe.
They've called in Archie Vaughan to add to most of the Birmingham squad.
The main question? Who opens because the TKC/Umeed partnership is another unsuccessful attempt to push a white ball player into a red ball role.
TKC may not be playing it seems but there are rumours that Lewis Gregory is 'fully fit'

Credit due re the selection decisions. Couldn't have been easy to leave out TK-C (must have been 50/50 with Umeed), but Lewis Jnr. did enough to justify his recall and Archie Vaughan continues to look a solid prospect.
Tom Abell's innings was sublime. Barely, if any false strokes and some textbook drives and cuts. Tom Banton also did very well to stay with him for so long, whilst largely containing his natural attacking instincts.
A few popped & gripped, so here's hoping that our spin brigade can get stuck into them tomorrow. After we've got another hundred or so runs of course. And maximum batting points.

Throwing the last 3 wickets away for less than 30 seems a little profligate? Maybe there is a grand plan I've missed?
We'll see how it goes I suppose.
We got nearly 500 and are now into the wickets.
Maybe they knew it was going to be hard work and wanted the extra hour in field rather than just nudging a few more runs eating up overs.
If we keep chipping away the follow on is still looking quite a big ask.....
I'd suggest to you that we would be exactly where we are now had Somerset batted sensibly up until the lunch break accumulating and then even declaring except they'd still be four wickets down but they might be nearer 100 than 150.
Surrey grind you down as they are presently doing. With 2 and half days to go a bit of grinding might have been as useful as headless chicken batting in the chase for passing the rope. 'Moving the game forward' and 'teaching patience' sometimes find themselves in conflict in this game. It's a fine line admittedly
But you know best WSM and I'm sure it will all come good in the end before Sunday

Durham didn't make it easy for Somerset, Somerset needs to get the remainder of the wickets before the follow-on figure is reached. It is a flat pitch, it could be hard to get a win.

I didn't take Bas De Leede run-out, so I took the scoreboard instead showing the fielder and the WK who removed the bails.

Good to see Archie bowling. Thought he did very well and thoroughly deserved his first wicket.
Disappointing seventh wicket stand and most definitely a tough task to get a result from here. Not sure we would enforce the follow on, even if Durham fail to reach that target.
Justin Langer’s views regarding us never winning the Championship unless we do something about the Taunton square often sit rent free at the back of mind. Today was one of those days.
Lovely atmosphere at the ground and so nice to be able to wander onto the outfield at lunch. Just a huge shame that SCCC continue to penny pinch and close 4/5 (5/5 tomorrow) of the Somerset stand.
Wasn’t able to attend the members forum, so any feedback re the content would be much appreciated. (Had to smile at BR’a comments re GH’s experience !).

Thought you were back mid North American continent Grizz? Yet another Grocklee in the hallowed halls at the 'LoL Anniversary Match'!! Also missed out reference to Farmer who passed on his usual perambulation (anticlockwise) around the ground at lunch.
Lots of discussion about Jack changing ends from the River to the MT in the afternoon when momentum had passed its peak getting a little more from that end but only bowling about 3/4 overs from there before reverting back. Baffled some but is his favoured end.
They need to break this up before it adds the 70 runs that will take any discussion about 'follow ons' away.
Will see what I can get this morning about the 'Q&A'... was it Jamie's first actual official one? Couldn't remember if he's had any formal members meeting since completely taking charge
Will miss much about Canada, but not the weather extremes like this January’s spell of -40C. There’s cold and there’s flippin’ ridiculous !

It is very poor that there was zero information given to waiting members as to whether or not play might resume. A couple of us waited for over thirty minutes for an announcement but nothing came and the umpires walked off for a second time so we assumed play was over for the day.
Club need to do better!!
More astonished that Durham managed to concoct a run out by taking on Tom Abell’s arm again.
And yet more astonished to see the video of Archie’s absolute peach to take care of Scott Borthwick.
Good to see us being positive in our batting and with the declaration today. We did get a bit bogged down after lunch but that aside, we couldn’t have asked for more.
More twists and turns tomorrow no doubt, but we have put ourselves in an excellent position.

Today had everything, good batting, bowling and fielding. I was surprised that the players returning after going off due to bad light. The light didn't look any better than when they went off.
We had to play spinners I suspect, which played into Somerset hands.
Tom Lammonby scored a quick 36.
Tom Banton hitting 6 runs, also scoring quickly, 46 off 38 balls.
Tom Abell scoring 4 runs. A total of 56 runs.
Andy Umeed scored 4 runs off the first ball of the innings.
George Drissell was caught by Tom Banton bowled by Kasey Aldridge.
To start the last day with Durham 3 down must be better than Somerset could hope for.
Fingers crossed for the weather at the very least...
I’ve been sorry to miss the meeting of so many Grockles but am looking forward to being at the Surrey match. Hope you all see a satisfactory conclusion today.
My league team Rainford have a final today against mighty Ormskirk. We are holders but definitely second favourite. Good job I have Rainford and Somerset ; am almost past anger with Lancs but the tactics bowling at the tenth wicket partnership on Friday was a real low point .
However, the main covers are all on in preparation at 10:35. Though they aren't pegging them down so hope is high.

What an excellent result & well bowled Mr Leach
Some great batting as well as a very encouraging debut by Archie Vaughan.
Add in good Captaincy by Lewis (especially re the decision not to enforce the follow on), some superb catching by Craig Overton and it was pretty much as good as we could possibly have wished for.
Special mention also to the hardworking ground staff, who lugged the covers on and off with appropriate zest.
The Surrey game is going to be very interesting !

Shame about the weather, in the end Somerset came out on top, to beat Durham and the weather.
I unashamedly and immodestly milked the fact that the match marked exactly the 75th anniversary of my first visit to the ground and I was grateful for the congratulations, not untinged by obligatory banter. What a contrast between the two matches: Somerset v Warwickshire in August 1949 resulted in a loss by 130 runs.
I trust you will look ahead in your five-year diaries to make sure you can be at Taunton in late August 2029 to attend my 80th...
Among Grocklites that our Lord and Master did not mention as being present was SloopJohnB, whom it was very good to meet again. There were probably a few others and it must have been one of the finest collective turn-outs since the site first took over our lives.

It's always been the 'lounge bar' concept of people enjoying talking to each other about the game & the county.
Far far far more people read the site than contribute to it but the quality that keeps a place going IS the contributions made by the population who use it for interaction.

LOL it occurs to me that the 80th anniversary of your first game will be the 60 year anniversary of my first day’s watching first class cricket though it was a Test. I didn’t get to watch Lancs till the following year. Nevertheless, Somerset v Lancs at Taunton will do although I’m expecting a long time in second division for Lancs so any fixture for Somerset will do.
And now, here is my report on the final day of the Durham match (standard publishing disclaimer: there is brief reference to a supporter's 75th anniversary of watching cricket at Taunton, but any similarity to a real person is entirely co-incidental):

Thank you for your kind comment.
However, you misunderstand my disclaimer. It is taken from those which used to appear on the title frames of films and copyright pages of novels in the olden days (days when we were young). They were only used where the opposite applied and a character in the film or book was based on a real person. Dragnet had a variation on the theme, "Ladies and Gentlemen. The story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."
I would like to reassure you and the person concerned that said inhabitant of Gimblett's Hill is a very real person. I know this because I owe him an ice cream and had promised to buy him one at this match. Quite correctly, being a real person, he is only prepared to accept a real ice cream (scoop vanilla in a cone with a flake) and such ice creams appear to have been banished (or have banished themselves) from the ground and so the ice cream is still owed.
And now, before the hole I am digging myself into gets any deeper, I will stop.

However as both the esteemed grockles reporter and the real person celebrating his 75th anniversary were both seen at the Q&A and indeed both spoke at said meeting, one or both, could (should?) have raised this extremely important point, why is real ice cream for real people no longer available at real cricket?
