Blast Game 13 Overton v Overton Surry away

Burning hot afternoon and the Overton brothers face each other as England release Jamie to come back to the Oval to play in the Blast games. However, we rest Craig so the face-off may have to wait for later in the tournament hopefully. Tom Banton is out for this and probably the four day games at the end of the month with a damaged index finger on his left hand so James Rew is called in to the side and will probably keep and bat at 6. Migael Pretorius may also be hoping for a run out this afternoon.
Blast Game 13 v Surrey @The Oval Sunday 13 July 2025
It's good we have what we need before this one as it is baking hot, the Surrey boys will want a win and we are have replacements in for returning overseas players and damaged wicket-keeper batsmen. Matt Henry returned south before the last game and Tom Banton left the field with a finger injury and took no more part in the game. He will take no more part in the rest of the league games and is also probably doubtful for the four day games before the 'Franchise Fiesta' that the ECB calls August.
The team today will probably include James Rew with the gloves also taking the number 6 spot. This will mean that Will Smeed and TKC will open once again. With the home quarter-final secured there may be some changes to the bowling with Jake Ball probably keeping his place but Migael Pretorius getting a T20 game at the end of the league phase. In this weather, Jack Leach may even get a rare T20 run out.
The Somerset side is:;
Smeed, Lammonby, TKC, Abell, Dickson, Gregory, Green, Goldsworthy, Pretorius, Meredith, Leach
So a bit of a difference to that expected. TKC will keep and Rew will sit this one out (but will probably play the last one to allow him to qualify for the Finals if necessary) Lammonby is the new batting option for this game - he will probably open with Smeed but could come in at 3 either way. The spin options have been added to by the introduction of Leach on what will probably be a dry wicket which the women spinners, espcially Gregory for Surrey got some good stuf out of. Ball gives way for Pretorius in order to get him into a qualifying position and the title of this whole piece is made redundant by the absence of our Overton who is being rested I would assume.
We will be on the way at 3:30 Lewis won the toss (shock horror!!) and..... (drum roll) we will BOWL first.
Jacks and Patel open for Surrey and they will face Jack Leach first up in only his 7th T20 game of his career. The first is a drive from Jacks, the second is into the stand over long on. Jack, unphased, has him all ends up with the third. 9 after the first over with Jacks on 7 and patel on 2.
Riley Meredith takes the second as we are told the par score at the Oval in this decade is 163. 4 wides off his first delivery won't help us keep them inside that score!! TKC found that one hard. The bowler's second is better. But he then bounces Jacks and it goes for another four!! Four byes to go with four wides and only half an over gone!! Jacks comes down the pitch and he then has the physio on as it hits him on the arm. Meredith saw him coming!! He's hitting 90mph and has his radar in now. 17 for 0 after 2. Extras did well.
Pretorius takes the third (so the first was to get Jack's eye in probably for later). Patel drives but misses. He's also belting in but he's about 8 mph slower than his Aussie team-mate! Jacks slams the last ball to the boundary as they move to 22. Meredith continues and Patel fires him into the stands for another six which almost hits the window of the dressing room!
They are still swinging with gusto and the last ball of the fourth goes for 6 as they move to 40 from 4 Jacks has 21 from 15 and Patel has 11 from 9. The rest is extras. Migael also continues in the 5th. It's 46 after 5 as the skipper starts his afternoon with the over to end the 'Powerplay'. Patel is getting his eye in a little as a straight aerial four brings up the 50 to 53. Later in the over he swings the captain into the stand and it is 61 after 6. 10 an over as we start to look at putting the 'press' on this batting. Leach returns to start that 'press' operation if possible and he gets Patel coming up the wicket only to be stumped by TKC he goes at 62 for 1 with 23 from 17. Unfortunately that brings in Jason Roy!! He is sweeping early and swipes at one whihc goes the wrong way past Gregory at sllip and off to four. He reverse sweeps again and gets this one for four. 71 for 1 after 7 and we add Goldsworthy at the other end to see if we can hold this batting line-up in check in the middle overs.
A good over for only 6 from the young man and we see Green coming in at his usual position in the bowling order. A boundary off the last ball takes the score to 87 for 1 as we move to the 10th over which we will trust Lewis Jr with. He goes for 10 and at halfway tonight we have 97 on the board with only 1 wicket gone. Surrey would be confident of putting this well into the 200s. Jack continues with a wide to start the 11th and the next ball goes to the boundary which moves Surrey to 102 and him to 50 from 30 with 5 fours and 3 sixes!! 104 for 1 after 11 and we continuie with spin.
Roy and Jacks are starting to look very dangerous as Roy pulls for four. They are happy to scramble one and twos as well which is even more dangerous. At 'Nelson' Lewis gets a reward for hard work and Jacks is LBW looking to swing the spinner. 57 from 37 with 6 fours and 3 sixes. This brings in Sam Curran at 111 for 2 and we end the 12th with another wicket as he bowls and the Surrey captain is stumped as he has a great wahoo up the pitch, misses and way out of his ground as KTC says "Thankee Master".
In comes Dan Lawrence at 111 for 3. To face Leach who will bowl out with the 13. He bowls a no ball (went for 6) and then has a free hit whchi goes for 6!! He threfore finishes with figures of 2 for 42 but he has Roy caught by Abell with his last ball. Roy goes for 32 from 22. 127 for 4 at the start of the 14th from Gregory to Tom Curran that popular Surrey player in the South West.
The other Lewis misses running out Lawrence at the start of the over. Should have done that I'm afraid. Why was he not bowling this one? Are they keeping him for later? The 14th ends at 133. 6 overs to go with 6 wickets remaining. Pretorius takes the next. He doesn't start well as Curran lofts him over the top for four. Another no ball gives Surrey another free hit and although Curran does not connect they keep on coming!! 144 for 4 at 15.
Lewis Jr is back on a hat-trick ball but it is swept for 4. Lawrence then sends Surrey over 150 with a six to 154. He bowls out at 160 for 4 having conceded 2 for 39 from his 4 overs. Lawrence is 20 from 11 and Curran has 12 from 10 as Meredith comes on for his 3rd. Lawwrence helps the second for six as he tries to bounce him. The problem is, when you get it wrong the pace just needs the bat to re-direct it and it flies. This is going to be an expensive over as he has gone for 14 with a ball to go. 175 for 4 after the 17th.
The 18th will be from Ben Green. Curran looks to go high and he is caught in the deep by Sean Dickson 175 for 5 and Mr Curran goes for 19 from 15. This brings in Overton. Who takes a single. A misfield by MiggyP gives a four to Lawrence. Ben does really well as he tends to do!! 181 for 5. A fighting over!!
Pretorius bowls out with the penultimate and he gets Lawrence at 187 for 6 going inside out straight to Will Smeed on the boundary, 32 from 15 but he's gone. Jordan is the next man in and it's 188 for 6 with 6 balls to go. A good over from MiggyP.
We give the last to Meredith and his first goes for four off a Jordan edge through his legs and takes the home side into the 190s. He almost bowls the Surrey man next ball but they get 2. He then bowls an absolute blinder that Jordan gets nothing on. The fourth is a straight six - excellent shot. That brings up the 200 with 2 balls to go. He gets nothing from the 5th and they get a scrambled single from the 6th so it is 201 for 6 with Jordan on 14 from 7 and Overton has 7 from 7. Somerset need 202.
If we start well we could give them a run for this one!!

Reece Topley bowls the first for Surrey against Will Smeed and Tom Lammonby and he hits the first good four as they move to 5 for 0 after 1. 6. Sam Curran will bowl from the other end. Lammonby fires one out to Jamie who looks like he has caught it but immediately says he hasn't and that it was a bump ball. Well played JOve. It's 10 after 2. They have reached 13 when Tom Lammonby is bowled leg stump halfway through the 3rd. 13 for 1 and TL goes for 6 from 9. Good ball and a real skittling. In comes TKC and they have 17 after 3 when Jordan starts his bowling work. Smeed flashes hard to the boundary behind him. TKC takes 3 consecutive fours from him though the last one was appalling!! Agricultural is being kind to it. His last four is very controlled backward of square,. Jordan goes for 21 and we are 38 for 1 after 4.
Topley stays on for the 5th TKC 'ramps' one down the legside which he doesn't quite get and Foulkes misses it, he gets some glove on it but it goes down. 44 for 1 with one over left in the 'Powerplay' as Zampa comes into the attack to have a go at TKC. The Somerset man is looking to sweep and belt this but hasn't quite got it yet. Smeed pulls the spinner for four and they run a single from the wide as we move to 51 for 1. They take 2 off the last and they move to 53 for 1 about 10 behind at the end of the 'Powerplay'.
Sam Curran is on and Smeed drives straight to Topley and we are 53 for 2 as Will goes for 19 from 14. May be a big wicket that one. In comes Tom Abell and he is soon facing Jamie Overton in the 8th. The other Ove is looking far more 'athletic' than he did last time I watched him in a game when he was not really bowling and was acting as a kinda 'specialist' bat.
65 for 2 as Zampa takes the 9th. TKC hits him straight down the ground for six. TKC gets back on strike tries to hit against the turn. He top edges one and Foulkes calls for it. He goes for 38 off 23 at 73 for 3. Dickson arrives and takes a single to be off the mark immediately. It's 75 for 3 after 9.
Foulkes is taking off the keeping pads and it looks like he has got back issues. Dan Lawrence is putting on the gear and the keeper is hobbling off and Nathan Smith is on as 12th man. Overton continues with the 10th and Abell top edges a pull and Lawrence takes a catch from his first ball. 75 for 4... bad choice of shot I'm afraid, 6 runs from 8 balls and Gregory comes in with a HUGE job on his hands to get this one back.
At halfway we have 79 and we are definitely "behind the 8 ball" in Somerset cliche terms. 123 from 60 is a big hill to climb. Depends where they are after 15 but it looks pretty doubtful that Surrey will gicve this one up this afternoon.
Jamie is bowling well today (best I've seen from him for quite a while) with 2 for 11. A quick ball has Dickson trying to hook and Jamie takes the return catch to send him on his way at 90 for 5. In comes Green needing 112 with his boss from 50 balls and that is highly unlikely. 92 for 5 with 8 to go. Looks inevitable I'm afraid as Jordan returns to the Vauxhall end with a RRR of 13.75
During the 13th they change the ball but we still can't get it away though a thick edge from Green wafts it over the field to the back boundary for four to move us to 102 for 5. Jamie will bowl out with the 14th. He's back in the high 80mphs and it is good to see - except for us of course. The first boundary off Ovetrton's bowling comes from the bat of Gregory. 112 for 5 as Overton finishes with 2 for 23 - excellent spell.
Sam Curran takes the 15th with the visitors needing 3 a ball to get close. Nevertheless the slow ball goes way into the stand from the bat of the Somerset captain. He saw that very early. He goes again but doesn't get this one and leaves for 23 thanks to the hands of Roy. 119 for 6 and a batting change brings Pretorius in next. 121 for 6 at the end of the 15th. Somerset need 81 from 30 balls. 16.2 an over needed.
Zampa will bowl out next and may get a wicket if Miggy swings like that. He connects with one and finds a space between two fielders. Jacks was closest and probably ought to have got it. But Green tries the same next ball and he goes for 11 caught by Roy on the boundary at 122 for 7. In comes Goldsworthy for some batting practice with nothing really to lose. Zampa finishes with 2 for 28. Topley returns for the 17th and Pretorius fires one into the deep and is caught by Jacks for 2 at 122 for 8.
Out comes Meredith he gets a single and then he swings and misses but then practices the stroke once again. The next one goes way up and Jacks takes the catch. Topley finishes with 3 for 20 as Jack Leach faces Jordan in the 18th at 124 for 9. Jack takes a single to open his account in T20 cricket and almost straight afterwards Jordan nearly takes a phenomenal C&B but he doesn't get close. After 18, Somerset have 126.
Sam Curran is in for the 19th and Leach cuts for four and the over ends with 133 for 9 with Jack on 7 and Goldsworthy on 3. The final over requires Somerset to score 69 from 6!! Jordan takes the last. Leach cuts for a single. Goldsworthy tries to guide the bouncer over the keeper - too small Lewis!! He tries to take it on and the top edge goes straight to Overton and that is it at 134 all out. Win by 67 runs with Leach not out with 8 Goldsworthy goes for 3.
Good Surrey bowling kept them far away from that total. Well beaten

James Rew is drafted into the 14-strong squad for tomorrow`s fixture against Surrey at The Oval, and is expected to bat at no.6 as well as keep wicket.

EWe chase and it could be a big total as they are going at 10 an over by the 8th.
A few more than we would have wanted. Would have liked Ben Green to have been bowled out because he was on the money today but he only bowled 2. Maybe Ben should have had one of Jack's?
If we start well we could do well in this one but I think they have 15/20 too many to be honest but it would not be the first time I have had that opinion this year so...
Belying our respective places in the table, Somerset were clearly the inferior side on the day, both when batting and when =bowling, and the result was obvious from far too early (one of the occasional problems of the T20 format), but my boys enjoyed their day at the magnificent ground and will be back for more.
