Craig Kieswetter has returned to the England fold so we have a selection issue. Will Arul Suppiah or Nick Compton get the place - or will Brian Rose move a bowler and go for both? Jos will keep....let's hope we bat for a change!!
We are only expecting one change in the actual eleven playing though there maybe two moves within the structure of the side. Jos Buttler will keep but who will open?
Some other plan exists!!! Compton and Suppiah are both in and Mark Turner misses out. So Rosey is packing the batting in the hope that someone will fire tonight. Also they are talking about spin having more of a role. Compo will open it seems.
Not a great crowd at 5:20. No stand is particularly well attended except maybe the bottom of the CA pavilion. At the moment we've probably got 3000 in - but there's 40 minutes yet I suppose.
Bopara and Cook are opening and Trego is taking the ball from the OP. Ravi gets off the strike with a single. Cook cuts him for four ball 2. he does it again later in the over and Essex finish over number one on 11.
BenPhillips is starting for us at the River and he'll be bowling to Bopara. 6 balls later with a couple of streaky flashes it's 18 to the visitors. Zander replaces Trigger and when the second ball is dispatched to the Somerset Stand for four the level of positivity in the press Box is hard to describe. Alistair Cook returns us to optimism by Dilshaning himself straight down ZdB's throat (absolutely cruddy shot) 23 for 1 and he deserves to be walking back!
Ben continues and gives Walker a bit of a seeing to but they still pass 30 (31) by the end of the 4th. Zander also stays on at the OP. The fielding is a bit sloppy for the start with lots of balls not going into hands and some wayward stuff NOT over the stumps!! 37 up at the quarter stage!!
Alf is on at the River. No slips in and at least three flashes would have possibly gone to hand in these 6 overs. Then again if there had been one they probably wouldn't be flashing would they? Alf bounces Bopara...he takes the bait and looks to hook him. Up it goes and down it comes - into the hands of Arul on the Somerset boundary and it is 43 for 2 4 balls into the 6th. Ten Doeschate - the batter in from after the weekend is next in and gets off the mark immediately with a late cut to the Cowshed but we keep them down to 45.
Walker flips one off his toes in the 7th to bring up the 50 but is flashing outside off next ball so it isn't all plain sailing for the Essex boys. 2 wides follow and another two boundaries mean that Zander may be having a rest. 18 off the over brings Kartik on at the River and some poor fielding by the boss doesn't help the situation by adding a boundary to milked singles off the spinner. 72 by the start of the 9th and on comes Pollard.
Walker gets one way over his head first up and the big man is told he has bowled the one for the over. Ten Doeschate gets one that raps his knuckles and Kieron keeps harrassing him and he goes for a mere 4 - good over. The first of the innings really.
Kartik benefits from that over as he bowls a dot and nearly has Walker caught by Pollard the next ball. Ball 4 is slower and Walker tamely plops it into the big West Indian's hands looking for runs. It is 80 for 3 2 balls from halfway which becomes 82 at the 10 over mark. Styris and Ten Doeschate at the crease.
Suppiah comes on at the River for the 12th (90 for 3) which possibly suggests Kartik will be doing the OP change perhaps? Ten Doeschate likes him and sends the ball into the Somerset stand twice in consecutive balls to bring up the Essex ton. He goes for 15 in the end.
Marcus brings back Alf for the 13th to give Ten Doeschate something to think about but it doesn't seem to slow him down - he is still willing to take the bowlers on and he goes for 9 of the over. Kartik is back on for the 14th and nearly gets Styris backing up a very risky single. 122 by the end of it.
Trigger is back on at the OP and is sixed into it by Styris first ball. The fourth one does the same and the Cowshed boxes are being sprayed. Peter does well to only go for 15!! 137 for 3 with 5 to go. It is not looking promising given our present batting form.
Styris is opening his shoulders and sixes Kartik but when he tries it again he is stupendously caught at the Frosty shed end by ZdB. One handed over his head and holding on as he fell backwards. Excellent and very welcome. 148 for 4 at the completion of the 16th.
Pollard is back on with Foster replacing Styris. First ball and Ten Doeschate pulls something serious. He's incapable of running and hobbles to the OP end. We're not sure whether KP drops the ball or simply does not run the man out as he is obviously in pain. It is looking like he is going to have to retire hurt as two of his teammates help him hobble off.
148 for 4 and Grant Flower is on. He helps to bring up the 150 with the end of the 17th. There are a lot of run out chances NOT being taken here with very little going to hand and even less going near the stumps with any regularity. Alf returns to the River, Foster faces and sticks him to the boundary first up but the VC replies with a couple into his toes. The last one squirts past Jos for four. 164 for 4 with 12 to go.
Kieron shows some real commitment, fielding off his own bowling to nearly run Flower out going for his second and he is rewarded with Foster's wicket as he flat bats one straight to Trigger. 167 for 5 and Phillips takes his place at the crease (no relation that I know of). Phillips takes a risky single and KP is down the wicket racing him to the stumps and he is.......SAFE (benefit of the doubt)
So Fonz takes Flower out with a yorker that totals his middle and leg stump...sod these run outs!! 174 for 6. Ball 2 nearly does for Masters as well and a streaky flick off ball 3 gets him off strike. Phillips flails at number 4 but misses. He gets ball 5 and they run a good 2. Last ball is paddled around and into Trigger's midriff. 177 for 7.
Alf 4 0 24 3 can't ask for much more at the death can you?
BIG total. The batsmen really do need to "come to the party" tonight or we will get nowhere near this.
Banger and Compton come out to start needing 8.9 an over. Wright opens for them and a flashing shot gets us to 6 off the first set. Styris opens from the River and Compo straight drives him for a single followed by his captain. he then imperiiously smacks him to the Somerset before skying a slower one and getting a very lucky swirling wind which fools Cook who fails to hang on to it. Luck lucky boy! 14 after 2.
Marcus goes over the top for three and Nick follows him but is nearly caught doing it. He then pulls off an absolutely sublime cover drive for a consecutive 4 and we are 28 for 0 having seen both sides of Mr Compton the Enigma! Then the skipper starts on Styris, swatting him to the Cowshed corner for two fours over the infield before feathering a third to the OP boundary to take his side to 45 off 4 overs.
Masters is on for the 5th and is greeted with a crack as Compton cover drives a no ball for four - it left his bat like it was jet propelled. The next ball takes us to 53 without loss and that becomes 56 leaving us needing 122 from 90. A better start but you're never home at Somerset until the last ball is bowled.
Wright changes ends but his fortunes don't change that much as the captain dismisses a long hop to finish the 6th with 65. The official number is 6000 but we all agree that 5000 is a more realistic estimate of the number of supporters here.
On the field things are going better than anticipated as most things the batsmen try seem to come off, reverse pulls, shots over the top, even the odd classic technically superb shot! They both look hungry to score and at the end of 7 they are still going at over 10 (72 for 0). We all know it can go to hell in a handbasket at the fall of a wicket though as Essex introduce Danish Kaneria. He goes for 4 and we fall under 10 for the first time.
At the OP Bopara looks to get on the wicket list and Compo is nearly very foolish going for a quick single that was only just there for Mr Trescothick! It's 86 after 9 however as he redeems himself with another excellent cover drive and his partner flips one over the field to the CA boundary. Nick beats his boss to 50 but only just. It is an excellent half ton however and very welcome for the newbie who has taken his chance well here (50 off 36 balls and 8 fours well done sir!).
At halfway we are 93 for no wicket, 10 runs ahead but as we all know, only 10 balls from disaster!! Nevertheless it is still going well as Compo cuts, feathers it past Foster and gets another four. When it's oging with you it's going with you and he deserves some luck as he has had very little in his first season at HQ. However Banger seems to be tucked up by a straight ball and just drops it to the sub in front of the Cowshed for a 27 ball 40. It was all going so well. 99 for 1 and in comes Pollard. He brings up the 100 with a two off his first and starts the 12th at the same time which ends with a total of 104 after a misfield on the Somerset boundary.
Kaneria to Pollard? Effortless six over the 'right turret of the Ondaatje'! Second ball....same place in about 10 yards. Ball 4 over the OP into second row of cars. Bopara bowls him trying to cut with the 5th. 21 off 8 balls! 122 for 2 at 12.5 and in comes Hildreth. Squeeky Bum time!
Phillips bowls the 14th and Compton hits him for 4 off his second. James follows suit as we continue to pepper "Cow Corner" and go to 135. The over rate is down to 7 but you have that nagging feeling that it may still not happen. Suddenly the most important batsmen out there is Nick Compton. You feel that while he remains we are in stable territory but should he go? even though we have Zander, Peter, Jos and Arul to come.
Styris changes to the OP and we simply reverse the shot and start to pepper "Frosty's Corner" instead. Compo moves to new career best in T20 and we move towards the magic 150 coming up 6 short at the 15th. We now need 34 from 30 balls.
Kaneria provides the 16th and gets James with his second as he comes out of his crease, misses and is stumped for 6. 145 for 3 and we welcome Peter T to take up the cudgel and hopefully see this one home. We all wonder why Zander isn't the next man in. 146 with 4 to go and Masters is backl on at the River.....the rate has slowed significantly as Trigger has trouble getting off strike. Compo tries to reverse sweep and hits his own wicket to leave scoring 74 off 55 balls. Daft shot I'm afraid and Jos Buttler is next in - strange.
147 for 4 and we need 31 off 18 balls. It looked so promising and then it has slowed down. The pressure is mounting on us and we could have thrown this one away after being 10 runs ahead. We have scored four runs off the last 12 balls. 150 comes from the first of the 18th and these two need to go for it and hope if they fail that we have enough batting left. Trigger tries to go big and high and dies in the midfield to a diving catch from the boundary man running in. 153 for 5 and 25 is needed off 15 balls.
There is some booing gong on but no-one seems sure what it is or who it is they are booing. Zander doesn't last owlsdlong as he is C&B'd by Styris without troubling anyone. 24 off 13 is the total and that becomes 2 a ball as he plays back and gives them a dot ball. Some disgruntled people at the ground from the sounds wafting up to the box.
Masters bowls and Jos fires him to the "Cow Corner" and is then LBW next ball 158 for 7 and it's down to the tail again!!!!! Ben Phillips.... with loads to do, royally shafted by his team-mates I'm afraid. It's a single off the last of the 19th and we need 16 off 6!! As someone said, only Somerset could lose a game from this position!!
Arul on strike. Wright to bowl 3 wickets left 16 needed!
Ball 1 - Arul run out going for a second! Alf in
Ball 2 - He faces 163 for 8 single to the scoreboard
Ball 3 - Ben on strike 164 single to the CA pavilion
Ball 4 - 165 13 needed. Good Yorker single
Ball 5 - 166 12 needed. Needing 6 Ben tries some kind of Dilshan flip and is bowled!!
Ball 6 - Kartik in on a hiding to nothing needing 12 off one ball. Single
WE LOSE BY 10 RUNS - ABSOLUTE GARBAGE IN THE SECOND 10 OVERS!!
According to the guys upstairs there are two 'L' in "Bulls testicles" and that is what we were this afternoon!!
Really disappointing after a good front end start fizzled into the usual collapse. Really disappointing end to a really promising game. As one end gets it sorted, the other end packs it in and we go down pathetically.
The clue to whether or not we are on Sky is the start time. It's usually 10 mins later when on tv. Wednesdays start time is the standard 17.30 for a midweek, non floodlit match.
The Essex game is now shown on the Sky Program Planner at 5.30. It was mentioned at the end of the Cricket Writers on TV yesterday that the Essex game is on Sky and I beleive after the Middlesex Essex game yesterday. It's not shown on the Sky Cricket website as one otheir televised matches though. Will have to wait and see!

I've watched most of the WC matches and haven't really heard these horns everyone is moaning about.
The noise I do hear certainly beats the moronic singing of some fans.
I prefer it to the dreadful disco music and noises piped out by DJ's to get fans excited at these T20 events as well.
Back to bed now.
Grump over.
Ouch, was rather hoping we might be able to bat first. You want to put your stronger suit under pressure and there is little doubt which of our two suits is stronger, at present.
Hello,dear boy.
E-mails?
Have a word with those lovely people at BT for me please, for those poor souls who live in the sticks interweb connection and e-mail is something we can only dream of.
Don't forget kiddywinkles, next time you see the advert with the middle class family telling us all just how great 20Meg broadband is,please remember.
Only a few lucky people, usually in the big towns, actually get such a service, despite us yokels having to pay exactly the same amount of money as they do.
Broadband in this country is a joke.
BT are a joke.
Don't be fooled by their hard sell.
It's rubbish.
Ten seemed to tear a muscle,Grizz.
Went down like a sack of spuds he did.
A shame,he was great fun to watch.
Ben should have been bowled out.
Did he stay on the field or was he taken off for another reason?
Oh dear... Are we sure we really want to win this thing?
It seems our best hope is for Sussex to win all their matches except the return one against us and then for us to limp into qualification in third or fourth place. (but Gloucestrshire have posted a good score against Sussex this evening)
It just got worse and worse and worse! At this rate they'll be giving tickets away by the middle of next week. We had this one won and simply lost our heads and wickets like they were going out of style!!
Strange decision after Pollard. Zander should have come in and farmed the strike to Nick. Instead we send in an out of form Peter?
Then Compton didn't need to do what he did and that put the coffin nails in well and truly. The rest was just headless!
Just as the openers got a grip everyone else forgot how to just grind it out!!

The only way we'll qualify will be if we repeatedly bat first and, thereby put the pressure on a decent SCCC bowling and fielding unit as opposed to a panic-prone batting line up that have now given underwhelming performances in something like 8 successive T20 games, dating back to the Champions League. With Alf, Ben, Pollard and Kartik, I think we can win games even when defending ordinary totals. I also think there would be less panic from our batsmen if they bat first.
I am worried that when the CC restarts we'll have a thoroughly out of form batting line-up. At least Compton made a score today, but what followed him was something best forgotten.
What a shower! Because we're 99 -0 we've won??
I don't think so.
I am intrigued to know who decides tactics, particularly in the dressing room? Hurry, Rose or Tres or do they have a committee meeting?
We used up all our luck with two wins - we could very easily be played 5 won none.
Poor Pete hasn't played anything like he can since the Chairman of England selectors told him how good he was!
OLDBOYBA!
With 11 matches left, we must surely now win a minimum of seven more to qualify for the quarter-finals. A 9-7 record may be good enough for fourth place, but you also need to take the occasional weather-related `no result` into account.
Glorious afternoon sat on Gimblett's Hill. Once again our fielding and some bowling let us down, but I thought we were in control for much of the game, after the first 15 overs, then we threw it away. Unbelievable. Used the park & ride service, which was very efficient, but they only had 19 customers, two of whom appeared to get lost for the return journey.
I got the team right for today, but only Tres, Compo, Alfie and KP, justified their places. Quite a few should be looking over their shoulder now, but who to replace them with?
Makes the infantile marketing claptrap on a certain website look even more ill-judged.
Quite what was going on in the last ten overs was hard to fathom. Perhaps the coach should have come out and blown a vuvuzela in the ear of some of our batsmen to wake them up (or stuck it somewhere else)
Mind you, perhaps we will fail miserably at this nonsense and by way of compemsation win the County Championship instead.
We need to be reminded that cricket is played inbetween the ears as well as with arms.
Why Hildreth decided at that point to dance down the wicket I shall never know and Compton who actually looked as though he knew how to bat did an Adamsin getting us into the home straight and then not finishing it. The strange thing with this group is that Sussex apart,( and they might be running of steam) no one is putting a run together.
Totally unimpressed with Grant Flower today.
Fair play he took a good catch to get rid of Trego, his reaction and gesture to the somerset stand was very unacceptable, he deservedly got boo-ed for several minutes afterwards.
Guess he may have had some provacation but no excuse for a man of his age and experience.
Quote from TRES in WDP this morning and I'm sure Nathan didn't make it up. 'The guys need ..... a bit of brain power back...' end of quote.
Absolutely spot on and lets forget all this nonsence of reverse sweeping about 50% of the scoring shots. Only a few of them bring boundaries and are outdone by the risks involved.
A normal sensible cricket shot in or over 'the arc' would be safer AND probably more productive.
yeah and Trescothick's reverse sweep is just about the worst shot I have seen in cricket.
One thing I took from all of this. On Sunday Ten Doeschate after his great innings whilst on the losing side at Lords stated that they would be practising hard to put things right on the Monday morning. Trescothick said last night we have a day off tomorrow before playing again on Friday and then we have 4 more days off again next week before Sussex. That is totally unprofessional, we need to practise to at least try and rectify this. We seem to be looking forward to the days off rather than the games.
I agree with most of the posts, if we lose against Glos and Kent (and at the moment I cant see any other results), we will be more or less gone. We'd be as well saying to Cam just forget it and save the money. Langer would not have stood for last nights nonsemnse and although we talk a good game we have yet to walk that talk. IMO this is where we miss his professionalism the most.
"We'd be as well saying to Cam just forget it and save the money."
Sadly, Ronnie, it's almost certainly the case that we won't have this option. If Cam is contracted for 5 games or whatever it is, I'm sure he'll be expecting to be paid for them? So we'd better hope we are still alive so that we derive some value from his stint!
I won't hold my breath waiting for our batting outfit to develop composure because that is now 8 straight T20 games when they have failed as a unit (including the final three CL games.)
Over that time, I believe that only Nick Compton (yesterday), Kieron Pollard (vs Middx) and Wes Durston (vs Diamond Eagles) have managed to score a fifty?
So three 50s from 8 games? Dismal stuff.
We simply must bat first and hope that, free from the pressure of having to chase runs, our lot can chisel out totals of 140-150 or so and then our decent bowling outfit can put opponents under pressure..
Isn't it strange that we talk about our strength being our bowling outfit in a season where we expected that to be the area that would hold us back?
In all this we need to remember and appreciate the massive amount of work that particularly Alfonso and Ben Phillips are putting in to support Charl Willoughby in all forms of the game.
If we do keep ourselve sin the hunt for this we are going to need both Pollard and White to help us get back on track in this and we will have to sacrifice Kartik to ensure we make defendable totals or chase scores put up in the final games.
I presently don't think he has been as effective as I hoped he would be in this format and his batting is immaterial seeing as he is coming in last and by that time we've stuffed ourselves royally anyway.
absolutely Grockle. Strange that Somerset are viewed as a stronger bowling than batting unit.
I think our batting has been weak all summer to be honest. Apart from the Yorks game when we chased down that score we haven't been convincing at all. 377 v v Yorks in the first innings and 300 odd v Essex are the only 300 plus scores we have had and many of them are down to lower order too. The T20 has just brought out those frailties even more. I think you are right if White is available then it has to be him and Pollard with Kartik dropping out. Where that leaves us after the T20 batting wise though heaven only knows.
The guys have got to get working hard, believe in themselves and put a few wins on the board. That way we may have a chance but at present I fear we could lose any game from any situation.
"Isn't it strange that we talk about our strength being our bowling outfit in a season where we expected that to be the area that would hold us back? "
I don't think we expected that to be a particular weakness in one-day, as opposed to first-class cricket?
Certainly, with both Alf and Kartik in the same one-day side, I expected our one day bowling to be really rather good as they are two of the best one-day bowlers (and especially T20 bowlers) that one will find anywhere in the world.
Although, saying that, I admit that 2 overs for 19 from Kartik vs Surrey was disappointing.
But, other than that, I think Kartik has done more or less as I expected in the other 3 games in which he has bowled. Not his fault that Hants produced a joke of a pitch on which his services were not required.
Regardless of that, when White gets here, I suppose there may be a case for giving Kartik a few games off to ensure freshness for the resumption of the CC?
I did not see one Vuvezela (sp?). However, while walking past the Ondaatje Pavilion I heard one solitary one make the drone. I looked up, expecting to see a person, but saw a loudspeaker instead. Very odd.
Until Pollard's last ball, we looked very likely winners. After that, it was as reported. Guess it shows how finely balanced these games are.
Compo was a joy to watch.
The Long Room, which I don't really mind, though it does remind me of a double-glazing catalogue.
Some children in orange t-shirts. (Were they using Robbie Earle's tickets?)
These children weren't quite so scared of this purple animal as I was
Well I personally did not expect Ben Phillips to be a consistent member of any side this year - injury records suggested that he would be flitting in and out when fit.
The age of significant others was a worry and once again (touching large amounts of wood while saying it) our bowling unit has stayed mostly injury free.
With that in mind I have to say that Mark Turner has performed adequately when asked to do so and Mike Munday did make a significant contribution when called upon early in the campaign.
Peter's form across the board has been a worry and does not seem to be gettng better presently and I hope he finds it again before the longer stuff starts once more. Kieron can cover that aspect more than adequately in T20 but we need a fit and firing Trego for the second half of the season if we are to make any impression on the CC1 or 40 over events.
Bloke: I found the ball this morning, in my South London garden.
I like your pics, but I'm sure you'll agree that Mike's of Flower bowled by Thomas is one of the very finest one could hope to see (wearing one's utterly unbiased SCCC specs).
The commentators were saying something yesterday evening about Pollard calling on his colleagues not to run ten Doeschate out when he fell in mid-pitch. That sounds like a fine demonstration of the spirit of cricket.
Pollard was standing at the wicket when the ball was delivered and Ten Doeschate was struggling to get in (in considerable pain with something obviously seriously 'gone').
He got the ball with the Essex man some way out and sort of 'fumbled' it allowing Ryan to get in. I think everyone was pretty aware that the man would not be continuing so there seemed little point in taking his wicket.
Take a look at the replay and watch Pollard when the ball comes to him.
Watch his face,I'm not sure if his fumble was deliberate.
Neither were the commentators.
Wouldn't have counted anyway.
He'd have come a lot closer to digging himself out if he'd have gone on to finish what he started yesterday.
Still, it was a welcome improvement on what had gone before from him and a step in the right direction.
But I think we all do (or at least should) have higher expectations from a new signing than one good T20 knock.
Most of us here are CC Uber Alles guys and so he will be judged primarily in that, I would think. He is likely to get his CC place back almost by default whilst Kieswetter plays the 50 over stuff for England.
And, with luck, last night's knock will have advanced his confidence and stand him in good stead for the rest of his season.
yes he looked a lot better than Trescothick who was too busy trying reverse sweeps which he just cannot play and looks totally out of sorts..as does Trego, Buttler, De Bryun, Phillips.
Hopefully he can anchor that opening spot for us, as being honest he should do as he doesnt have much to beat given Kieswetter has done the square root of nothing this season for Somerset either.
He still goes from the sublime (he can certainly cover drive a ball) to the ridiculous (what the hell was he trying to do when he was dismissed and WHY?). But as has been said he must have a better feeling about himself after yesterday.
He could and probably would have won us the game had his team-mates worked for him instead of trying to take the leather off every ball themselves.
Rosey on t'other site ...
"My feeling has always been that if Somerset can't win a trophy I would prefer Gloucestershire to win it rather than anyone else..."
Yep, my feelings exactly (except for the Glos bit - I certainly didn't feel that way in 1999).
Similarly, if the City can't win a trophy I would prefer ... Nope, it just aint right.
C'mon my babbies, I know it's only T20, but for goodness sake BEAT THE GLOS!!!!!
"My feeling has always been that if Somerset can't win a trophy I would prefer Gloucestershire to win it rather than anyone else..."
Maybe Brian is trying to soften the blow, should they qualify whilst we fail to do so. Not sure there will be too many of a like-mind, however.
Personally, if we cannot win this trophy, I should like Notts to do so since they might, hopefully, be distracted from their pursuit of the CC in the process of chasing this bauble - and, as such, leave the CC door open for our good selves!
I agree with LoL about regional solidarity. Indeed, according to the criteria vouchsafed by his Sunderland supporter friend, I find myself completely undefined.
Good news, Wickham: if you have no definition, I won't have to buy you a drink next time we meet (but then I don't suppose you'll be able to buy me one either).
I would prefer that Somerset were victorious in this competition, but if that's not possible ..., nope, still can't say it.
Lo(l) and behold, it seems my preferences came good.
Please tolerate planet Earth, Lol (I think it was an Andy Murray reference rather than Jamie, by the way).
It's friendly rivalry, not hatred!
Sunderland / Newcastle?
You're not turning into one of those footy 'ooligans are you (Lol quoting footy teams on a Somerset messageboard is surely worse than Ian Hislop quoting pop songs on HIGNFY)?
Well done Somerset, by the way.
Definitely not coming to blows with you about these sporting rivals, Tractor, but don't mind winding you up and then running rapidly in the opposite direction.
Flower was reported by umpires Michael Gough and Rob Bailey during Essex Eagles’ FP t20 match against Somerset Sabres on June 16 for a Level One breach of the code (using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting and/or making an obscene gesture). [www.ecb.co.uk]
