Wrighty returns Ajantha doesn't - Worcs CC1

Bye Bye Mendis

By Grockle
May 4 2011

Well the Mendis sojourn seems to be over except for one CB40 possibility on the weekend.  Ajantha does not play today and will not play against Durham on the 10th so it's hello and goodbye and turn to the youngsters.  No Max Waller though which is a personal surprise after his double century and wickets for the seconds yesterday.

v Worcestershire CC1 @ Taunton Wednesday 4 May 2011

Scorecard

Commentary - click on Murali Kartik on the messageboard photo montage for the link.

Championship cricket at Taunton in early May - there is little better.  Worcestershire as the opponents with Damien Wright in his 'Pears' guise greeting one and all like long lost brothers and sisters.  Ajantha Mendis does not make our team which is a disappointment - his substitute duties almost over and not a lot to show for it.

The side then;

Trescothick, Suppiah, Compton, Hildreth, Kieswetter, Buttler, Trego, Gregory, Hussain, Kirby, Willoughby

We won the toss and have decided to bat.  Wright opens the bowling and produces a maiden  against his old skipper while Richardson opens at the River and the first scoring shot is a Suppiah glide for four.  Marcus is still runless 6 overs later and Somerset are 11 for 0.

Good CC crowd for a Wednesday, dry and quite warm with a light breeze towards the CA pavilion.  Apologies for those trying to get the internet commentary from our side.  It seems that Mr Bevan who was commentating in the shed on the roof where the elcetronics were must have dislodged something trying to avoid the glass and the ball from Trego yesterday.  the techies are on the case but there is little anyone else can do at the moment.  There is other commentary (well there are some people talking in the next door 'shed') on Hereford and Worcestershire.

Marcus finally gets off the mark after 24 balls with a single to take us to 12 but after 10 overs there's not that much progress as we get to 20.

The Somerset commentary is now on one and all 11:45.

From this point on things start to look up and both openers seem to be getting their eye in and looking for gaps in the field.  That is until Suppiah (who has looked like he has his touch back) went forward to one and mijudged the line a little and the feathered edge was grasped by Solanki in the slips 44 for 1.  Compton marches out with new found confidence I am sure after his matchwinning ton at Wormsley to join his captain who is starting to open hi shoulders.  Gareth Andrew is brought on at the River and is punished for wider deliveries with two consecutive smites over the in field to third man by Marcus to bring up the Somerset 50.  Unfortunately, but to the Worcestershire man's delight, the third one is not so wide and he plays it on to his stumps and is dismissed with 53 up for 31.

53 for 2 does not look that good but we are all hoping for a good slice of luck and form to visit the next man in James Hildreth after some really unfortunate scenarios have stopped him really getting any kind of time at the crease.  So it is with dismay that without even facing a ball he is called through for an idiotic run by Compton off a push to the short fielder and he is out, by about 2 yards, from a clean hit from Cameron.  It possibly wouldn't have been a sensible run when the men were well set but it certainly made very little sense in the situation we found ourselves in.

Craig Kieswetter comes in with a mini disaster taking place adn it isn't even lunch on the first day!!  The good thing is that he seems to have decided to play himself in irrespective of whether he thinks there is something there to hit or not and he calms things down, taking the lions share of the strike and moving the score to 92 without further loss at the break.  Nick takes an age to get off the mark (he was on 0 himself when he ran his partner out!!).  Lunch arrives with a sigh of relief...here's hoping for a little less drama in the frst hour after the break.

Wright and Richardson are back on after lunch and a misfield (Holloway dives over the ball) to the Trescothick brings up the 100 and takes Craig into the 30's.  Some 45 minutes later I return to this report...we have 123 without further loss - Craig has 44 and Nick has yet to pass 20.  A cup of coffee and some very enjoyable banter with Damien Wright on the Gimblett boundary about his heroics with CK against a rampant Broad last season at Trent Bridge sort of cut through the turgid play on the field.  The fact that he kept talking about what 'we' had done was brought to his notice by Tractor with the statment "well we'll see whether it is 'we' when a catch comes this way!!".  Such a nice genuine bloke who it seems followed us all the way through the summer and knew everything that had happened on the way.  One for the future perhaps.

Meanwhile... tension on the field as Compton is dropped in the slips with the score at 124 of said DW.  Craig is then dropped off Richardson this time at 125 by Pardoe in the square leg poasition.  We then have a spell of a little more aggression from the Somerset pair which sees Compo finally break the 20 run barrier with a cut to the Somerset Stand followed by a lovely cover drive for three to the CA.  Not long after this, Craig finally reaches 50 with a pull shot to the Gimblett's boundary.  The half ton coming off 87 balls with 6 fours.  140 for 3 as the drinks break comes at the end of 49th without anyone really looking like they have broken a sweat since lunch!

However, although NC has taken a ball more than his partner took to his half century to get to 25, he does put the bad ball away and when Gareth returns at the River, he brings up the 150 and the century partnership with a hook to the Somerset and follows that with a very assured boundary to the CA the next ball to push the score to 158 at the end of the 52nd.  Craig continues this aggression in the 54th by hitting Andrew for a midwicket six to the Somerset as the light starts to become noticable.  It doesn't stop another six to square leg coming before the end of the over and a discussion between the bowler and his skipper about what to do about it!  174 for 3 with 24 coming off the last two!  Mostly from the ex-Taunton man.

Nick reaches his 50 after working towards it for 130 balls and bringing most of it with the 6 boundary strokes he has managed in the second half of his innings.  But he is still there and Worcestershire have now turned to occasional bowler Ali to try and break this up. 196 on the board with Craig on 83.  It isn't pretty but it is solid and moving inexorably forwards towards 200 pre Tea.

The double hundred does arrive courtesy of a gift ball to Craig from Mitchell at the River.  He duly dispatches it and then brings up the 150 partnership off the first ball of Moin's next over.  Tea comes with 209 to our name, 94 to Craig's and 52 to Nick's.  As stated, not pretty but it is effective and it was what was needed by our number 3 particularly who created the situation that had to be rectified in the first place.

Off to the box to commentate on the most interesting session of the three today.  Craig's 100 came up quite soon after the resumption but then he was becalmed for a period as no-one really found a way to get this game by the scruff and beat it into submission.  Nick got one from Wright that finall went away (he'd been trying for quite a time to get it to happen) and it went into the buckets that Solanki has for hands.  220 for 4 but still with plenty in the tank.

Jos Buttler was the next man in but he couldn't seem to get much off the strip and also faced Andrew as he went into one of those phases of bowling he used to have when he got things right.  He edged a steepling one to the slips and was on his way back for 5 courtesy of the Solanki buckets!  Shantry at the OP had also been shaping inswingers for a lot of the afternoon but hadn't got his length right but when we brought the 250 up he did get one right and castled Kieswetter  for 117.  Peter was playing and missing anything Gareth was sending down and Shantry was putting pressure on anyone at the other end and we now had the last recognised batsman at the crease on his first class debut with about 12 overs to play and only 250 on the board after a days hard work.

Lewis did not fare well.  Before he had really had time to get the feel of the game he got a 'mover' from Shantry which he guided into the slip cordon and Mitchell snapped it up 254 for 7 and things were falling to bits.  Double figure overs left and our tail exposed as Gemaal Hussain  came out to give Pete time to get us to another batting point and 300 runs.  The two men did what they were supposed to do.  Gemaal showed solid defence and made every effort to get Trigger on strike and the batsman made what hay he could when given the opportunity.  Stickability was the order of the day and the pair were managing it as the score moved towards that 300 until Umpire Steele gave the strangest decision of the day.  Richardson bowled an off stump delivery to Gemaal which kept low, went under his bat well away from his body, did not deviate and into Cox's gloves.  The umpire raised his finger and I commented that I did not think he had bottom edged it because the ball had not changed direction.  Then the decision was confirmed as LBW!!  I still have no idea at all how the decision could have been Leg Before when no pad was involved, the ball went through the space between the body and the bat and straight to the keeper.  If it was going on to hit...surely it would have hit?  Nevertheless, Hussain's quite solid and confident defence was over for 3 and we were 273 for 8.

Steve Kirby strode out.  Peter must have been wondering what strategy to employ.  Steve will stay if he can but he was not going to get you a share of 28.  What he did do was STAY and get the vital singles that put Pete on strike and we moved to 284 before he got a rising one from Wright that he could do little but edge to the slips.  16 needed Charl in to face his old bowling partner Damien and we all knew that the only chance we had was he could get Pete on strike.  First ball, step to leg and drive.  He connected, took only the single off a fair drive that would have given anyone else two and he'd done his job.  Damien made a mock attempt to beat him up for having the audacity to take a run off him but we'd managed something.  Pete didn't get much of an opportunity though and we found ourselves in the same situation in the next over with Charl needing to get Trego on strike.  This time he top edged a ball into No Man's land to achieve the objective.  290 up with 2 overs to go and Peter on strike.  What else could he do?  He fired a six  to the Trescothick stand and later in the over flashed one to the OP boundary and we had 300!!

Now could we stay in for the last over?  Charl found himself on strike and they brought back Gareth who I assume is their one day tailend 'death' bowler.  He fired one at the number eleven which he consciously swatted over the slips to the OP boundary for 4.  The next one was driven so hard past Gareth that he must have felt the wind whistle past his ear just before he heard it hit the Botham boundary board!  But the fourth ball swat was to a fielder and we were all out for 309 with the tail allowing Mr T to hit 50 for himself and 300 for his side with a combined stand of 55.  Not too shabby though I am sure not enough for some of the doubters.

But it is there 309 on the board and until we see how our bowlers deal with it a difficult score to assess.  Is it under par (I think it is by between 30 and 50) or a decent total?  There is enough for the attack to use but they have to take wickets and stop partnerships forming.  Hopefully the pitch was helping today and will help again tomorrow.  No-one did much daft (except for Nick and that run out - which may be the difference in scores).  Good balls got most and a lack of opportunity to settle into a rhythm.  More of the same tomorrow gentlemen please.

Day 2

Not a lot to say from me other than when I arrived at the ground at just gone 4:15 I expected the covers to be on and play to have been very sparse in the afternoon.  To see Somerset 5 overs into their secnd onnings with a lead of nearly 100 was a welcome surprise I have to say.

Wicket-taking was the main objective today - tight lines and use the conditions to get among and then through Worcestershire in order to give us time in what could be two rain affected days on Friday and Saturday.  Good work across the board I think.  Special mention of that Kirby bloke who seems to have left his pantomime clothes behind and cleaned up another 4 wickets in a game, starting the proceddings and then trimming the tail.  Both Arul  and Lewis seem to have come on and broken through almost immediately - AS just keeps taking wickets and although that is good it can't make Max all that happy!

Pete got one and Charl the rest.  The worry once again is Gemaal who went for a few and did not take a wickt once more - can't be easy for the man at the moment but there is still something about him that suggests it may still come right in the medium/long term.

But 238 was better than we probably expected and an overall excellent bowling performance.  Batting wise, Arul got a good one from Richardson.  Marcus weathered the early storm and then started to hit some majestic shots.  Then he wafted at one from a jubilant Wright and was caught behind.  He never looked entirely in, we were hoping for more.  Nick Compton has once again looked solid without being inspiring and has also succeeded in NOT running James Hildreth out yet (though he did have a good go at doing it to his skipper who came and had a little word with him almost immediately).  With 10 minutes to go to 6 o'clock and 8 overs after this one we are 74 for 2 with Nick on 19 having been passed by Hildreth on 22 - getting his first real look at a Championship innings.

Let's hope for no more wickets before the end of today and some heavy accumulation tomorrow.  You can't expect Marcus to declare early and it may be decided by the certainty of dry weather.  Unfortunately my hopes are dashed when Mitchell takes a sharp slip catch to send Compo back to the hutch for 22 on 81 for 3 and we send in a nightwatchman in the form of Steve Kirby!! - not my choice I have to say with 5 overs to go.  But he does his job, farming the strike even and finishing with his partner on 83 for 3 - 154 ahead.  Good day.

Day 3

Big worries for me by the time I got to the ground.  Expecting Steve to not hold out for long but then the batting he had protected taking us to a decent total for Worcestershire to fail getting,  I was a little less impressed when the only guy to really take hold of the morning session was Jos Buttler (46) who held together a collapsing back half to get us to 185.

So I check at 2:30 and the visitors are 77 for 2 needing another 182 with 4 and a half sessions to get them.  My expectations were lowish though this excellent wicket was giving something to those who worked at it.

Arrival at the ground raised my hopes.  Gemaal had got amongst them.  He had Kervezee and Ali in the same over to make 81 for 2 81 for 4.  Trigger got Pardoe at 84 and then G got the vital wicket of Solanki just after they passed 100.  Kirby came to the party with Andrew lbw just before Tea and we looked to be in the prime position to take this with Cox and Wright really the only opposition - though stubborn and dangerous opposition.

After Tea Willoughby started the drive to victory by making sure Damien's stay was short and 8 runs sweet!!  Then Shantry and Cox fell to the man of the moment and Hussain answered his critics with 6 for 33 in 11 and a half overs of molten gold!!

Big points.  A day off and a real solid performance from all members both batsmen and bowlers.  Personally I am really pleased for Gemaal who must have been wondering what he had to do to get his season of and running.  Well what ever he needed he seems to have produced it and let's hope it is the start of something really special.

It sounds like we have decided to go with another one of those "green tracks," of ours which can so often be tough to read.

Lewis Gregory is in the squad and might play, apparently. It does not sound to me as though they are particularly optimistic about Mendis being fit and the article also seems to me to imply that if the pitch is really green we may prefer the extra seamer to Mendis anyway.

IF it's the case that we planned all along to play the early season home games on green tops, then it does make the choice of Mendis as early season locum look somewhat curious, does it not?

I know there was rain during the game yesterday, but I struggle to believe that Taunton has had so much rain over the past two months that the green pitch was a weather-induced fait accompli, as opposed to something that we actually chose to have vs Warks? And it sounds like we're going with the same again tomorrow.

er.. just noticed that Charl Willoughby's name is missing from the "probable," team list. Since he is not mentioned in the article, I assume the "probable," team list is a mistake and that we should read "Willoughby," instead of "Mendis," particularly as "Mendis," is listed at number 11 in that "probable," team??????????????

Surprised that Matt Mason is not there. If the pitch is a green seamer he could be useful. As it is Richardson and Wright are a more than useful combo.

Their top order batting looks quite good.

Until Saeed Ajmal arrives spin looks a weak suit, but if we produce a green seamer that may be moot.

Well, unfortunate for Mendis but I'm glad that, for the second game in a row, we have not chosen to replace him with a specialist bowler, thus avoiding the four man tail.

I wonder if it's the green pitch they were forecasting?

If it is, it would seem that Marcus has taken a decision based on how the pitch behaved (according to Marcus) last time out, as opposed to how they usually behave (according to Marcus.)

The green tracks are notoriously tough to read so let's hope that if this is one it does not do anything excessive off the seam today.

As I predicted they've gone for Gregory as a bowling allrounder to solve the No8 problem; this works when you don't have a spinner and neither Gregory or Trego have to be third seamer. Frankly Mendis form doesn't make this a huge issue anyway.

Greening our pitches is essential to avoid the bat- bias inherent at Taunton, though as we've seen it doesn't always make that much of a difference.

The official line is that Ajantha has a slight lower back problem. The fact that people are talking about there being an "official line" always makes me wonder.

After the coolness of Lewis on Monday it is hard to think how you would keep him out and you have to develop the men who are going to be here after AM goes on Sunday and during the "AG gulf" of May.

Have to say I am very surprised not to see Max in the side after the double and wickts yesterday but conditions here this morning don't exactly scream "dustbowl burner".

To be frank, I'd been wondering about the Mendis injury in view of his intervening inclusion in the one-day stuff, anyway.

If officials are talking about an "official line," that does rather make one wonder - as Grockle says.

Perhaps the move simply has not really worked out and we've decided to get on with finding out about what we have in one or more of our younger players, rather than picking Mendis for the sake of it on a pitch not expected to be a bunsen.

The article on the official site seemed to me to imply that Mendis might not get picked if the pitch was a green-top, irrespective of the result of his fitness test.

If Hildreth wants to get into the England team, we'll have to either drop Compton or move him away from Hildreth in the order. Sounded like an absolute loony tunes run and has put Worcs firmly in the box seat now, one would imagine.

Compton owes us plenty of runs in first-class cricket.... he not only needs to get enough to justify his own inclusion in the CC side*, he also owes us the runs that Hildreth "would have got," too.

* Yep, made a ton at Wormsley, but then Compton has a strong track record in 40 over cricket. Still needs to prove himself in the CC format, for me.

It was a daft call at that part of the day and partnership. Was there a run? Well it was Compo's call but Hilda had just arrived and we were 45 minutes before lunch after the Boss had just played on. Once he'd got in and they were pushing it a bit maybe but one journo here reckons he was 2 yards out...he really was caught on the hop by it.

The rule should be that Nick NEVER takes a quick single (never ever ever ever!). Oh to be a fly on that wall at one.

There have been at least two...some here think it is three.

Vic Marks at Taunton - 1.05pm

Gloom has descended upon Taunton via cloud cover and the fall of three wickets: Suppiah, caught at slip; Trescothick played on (one bail dislodged) and Hildreth (run-out without facing and blameless).

It must be in the genes. The fallibility of Denis Compton's running was legendary. Grandson Nick was no more trustworthy here. He called for a ridiculous single having hit the ball firmly to mid-off and Hildreth was always going to be beaten boy the direct hit by James Cameron, a titanic effort by the fieldsman and a terrible sinking feeling for Hildreth and Somerset. Since then Compton has been a bit becalmed and his running ever more hesitant. Kieswetter has been bellowing instructions wherever the ball has been hit.

Hildreth, captain of the Lions in the winter, has been in reasonable form this season, but has few runs to show for it. This feels like his third run-out of the summer. Aaagh. I would still expect him to captain the Lions against the Sri Lankans at Derby in a couple of weeks. The bowler tormenting Somerset the most is an old boy, Gareth Andrew, from the down the road at Street. Many more wickets from him and the locals will be mumbling.

NW5Somerset

Shame, this infers that Hildreth will miss the Sussex away game starting on May 18.

"Since then Compton has been a bit becalmed and his running ever more hesitant. Kieswetter has been bellowing instructions wherever the ball has been hit. "

Quite frankly, if we're going to keep going with Compton at 3, it might be necessary for Brian Rose to decree that Compton is simply not allowed to call, full stop. The batsman at the other end makes all the calls, end of story.

After all, how keen is the non-striker going to be to automatically respond to Compton's calls? (unless of course the run is completely obvious)

AGod
04/05/2011 14:13
And, Nailsea - nope, have never complained about Compton scoring slowly in first-class cricket. I've said he needs to start making some big scores. Other opinion - from Grockle in this case - was that he needs to really occupy the crease for long periods whilst the others bat around him.

Either way, he needs to prove himself in the CC this season and it will be an uphill battle if he keeps running out arguably our second best batsman (and best last season).

AGod
04/05/2011 14:18
Yep, NW5, Hildreth and Kieswetter will probably both have to be absent for the Hove game.

Should be an exciting opportunity to see what two of the younger guys can do - maybe Barrow and Meschede? Or is Jonesaround and able to play?

Gregory is already in the team, so he cannot be the (direct) replacement for either guy.

SheptonPaul
04/05/2011 14:18
Well said, Mr Fizz...

Running always looks like a really simple thing to get right - if you don't play the game, especially at this level where the fielders are just that bit better than on a Sunday afternoon in the park. At my level of cricket (Thames Valley League, lower divisions), I used to maintain that there was a run just about any time you hit the ball if you were awake as the fielders were generally slow and poor and you were extraordinarily unlucky if they hit the stumps direct. It's a bit different in CC Div 1 nowadays.

Yes, it's something Compo needs to sort out, but that's easier said than done.

AGod

I'd be interested to know if any Middx fans could tell us if it was a problem at Middx?

I assume it has been a long-standing problem... which would mean he has not sorted it despite (presumably) attempting to do so for a long time.

He's not the first to have problems with his running between the wickets. But if it happens too often, then an assessment has to be made as to whether he is worth his place? He's not Geoff Boycott in terms of the scores he piles up off his own bat! So if Compton wants to be on the right side of any such assessment he will need to start scoring quite heavily in the CC, IMO.

Sounds like a really good effort by Damien Wright.

Whilst I was (wrongly as it turned out) excited by the Mendis signing, I was also slightly surprised that they did not bring Wright back. That's because he was a guy that Brian Rose said he had been targeting for a while (when we signed him last season) and (I would assume?) the club must have been pretty happy with his all-round performance last season.

Perhaps we did approach Wright on the QT but he had a longer contract offer from Worcs?

Craig goes to 50 with a pull to the Gimblett. 138 for 3.

Point of order AG. I don't think I'm the only one who believes that is Nick's role in the side but I'm happy to take the credit for it if you like.

AGod
04/05/2011 15:36
The BBC Bristol team reckoned that Craig has adjusted his technique and is now concentrating on staying more or less in-line much more often, as opposed to backing away, in pronounced fashion, to leg in order to create room to hit over the off-side.

When I've watched Craig in the past, I've always thought that the one shot possibly missing from his locker was the orthodox cover-drive. I assumed this was the main reason why he would back away to leg to create room (because otherwise folks could tie him down by keeping it pitched up on off stick, unless he was going to either back away or play an orthodox cover drive.)

I wonder if either England (Lions) coaches or Jimmy Cook have had an influence there?

Marcus apparently attributed the season that James had last year, in part, to some technical adjustments to his game, too.

The overall impression that I've gained so far is that there has been quite a bit of assistance for the seamer and that Somerset have mainly played very sensibly and patiently.

Grockle said that he was a bit surprised that Max Waller is not involved. I note that one of Grockle's colleagues said that one of the 12 or so balls that Mooen Ali bowled before tea "turned in very sharply," so that might be interesting to keep an eye on as the match develops.

In one sense, with us batting first, it might not be unwelcome if the track does take turn. I guess Suppiah has also been in fairly good bowling form.

Yeah, sounds like a top innings from Craig.

Also sounds like Compton played some very good shots. Frustrating that he, once again, did not really go on with it, though. Or at least did not really go on with it enough to counter-balance the run-out of Hildreth.

I'm not sure what it is with Compton. I have seen him play some excellent strokes in the past. He does not usually completely fail i.e. get out for single figure scores either.. a fact which suggests to me that he also has a decent defensive technique - and indeed that's the impression I have gleaned when watching him live. So, if you've got a decent defensive technique AND you have some good stroke-playing ability then I think you should be able to average more than 33 or 34 in first class cricket?

I can see why, looking at him, Brian Rose would have thought "he looks a really good player, let's bring him to SCCC," but in the CC it just never seems to completely click for him?

Well, Nailsea a lopsided scorecard can *sometimes* be an indication that batting is really rather difficult and that the person with the big score has played uncommonly well.

In a way it's good that we're talking of a par score being around 300. So often in the past at Taunton its been 400 plus which inherently makes a result difficult to achieve. It simply does not make sense to me at all,i dont have a problem with the order being changed slightly to accomadate someone who is in some serious form.
Surely that would help the side more, maybe players are "to" comfortable in certain spots in the batting order and need a boot up the backside.

Audio commentary

Hello. I look after the internet streaming of the commentary for Somerset (and have done since however long ago it was we started doing it..) The problems today (and I'm fairly sure on Mon 4 April) were simply congestion of the ADSL line at the ground (if you're familiar with how ADSL works you'll know there's much more capacity for receiving files than sending them - so if, for example, you have photographers uploading hi-res photos, or people sending large files attachments, the connection may start buffering.) The earlier reports of people's audio breaking up after 20 minutes were probably just co-incidence.

I've changed some settings on the network to (hopefully) give priority (QoS or 'traffic shaping') to the commentary feed when the connection is saturated. Hopefully this will fix things but there are sometimes different problems so remember you can use the email address that's on the commentary page - 'somerset.support@cricketcommentary.co.uk' - and providing I'm able to I'll always reply promptly. People email from time to time and obviously the Somerset staff let me know if they're ever aware of a problem, but I don't think anyone who reads the Grockles forum ever has - so just to make you know it's something you can do.

(The email is the best way to get hold of me as I live in Kent - so there's no guarantee I will be listening - much as it's nice to from time to time - and I only check the forum very sporadically.)

Best wishes,
William

There is an argument for moving him up the order BUT he might then find himself running with Compton!

SheptonPaul

Certainly looks like swapping Pete and Jos around, at least for a while till Jos finds form. On the other hand, Pete has every chance of topping the averages this season and improving his career stats no end!

309 = fewer than we wanted, but may be a good score if it continues to swing (not certain) and our 5 seamers bowl well.

Norwich SCCC
04/05/2011 19:32
Get them 3 or 4 down before lunch and we should get a first innings lead.

I agree with SP that the case for swapping Pete and Jos looks a sound one but it is over to the bowlers now.

04/05/2011 19:53
I saw most of this mornings plus 90 minutes tonight. The bowling I saw from Worcs was excellent disciplined and bowling to a plan. From what I saw we did well to get 300. Whether it is a good score will depend on if we've bowled them out by close tomorrow for around or less than our total. I understand why Gregory was preferred to Waller, but IMO Max could well have given us the vital ingredient in the fourth innings - we will see.

It seems that as well as batting, bowling, fielding coaches we also need a 'judge a run' coach, with NC the first student to be taught how to judge a sensible run. (He seems to keep failing to take it in being involved in so many dodgy runouts). I don't think Boycott was speaking to him during the winter.

I don't think he will be getting a Christmas card this year from Mr & Mrs Hildreth!

I had a difficult choice on what to post today I missed the wicket with the stumps being hit and Marcus’s wicket I had a fielder in the way.

Several of the other wickets the player were caught playing with a straight bat, something was happening out there today, was it the weather or was it the pitch we may know tomorrow.

I have several good shots of Pete Trego’s excellent inning but I also have several more showing how difficult batting was today, this photo is of him missing the ball, I have two of him double over from lifting balls and another of him taking his hand off the bat to avoid being hit on the hand.

Those who scored runs today deserves praise no matter how long they took in getting them.

I have not read any of the other post so I don’t know other views on today’s play.

Surely the point re Trego is that he's an allrounder, his bowling is important to the team and therefore it's important he gets a good break and the end of the innings.
I would have no problem moving up to 6, but certainly no higher.

I've always said I would swap many of PTs runs for wickets in the CC as they're more likely to win us the game.

Thanks Mike, the commentators seemed to have a similar impression to you.. namely that some balls were bouncing unexpectedly from not far short of a good length.

I also had the impression from what I heard that ball was seaming around as well as swinging.

As we know when the pitch is green it will often do something at the start of the game and then flatten out.

But my impression was that batting did not really get any easier as the day wore on today? I hope that that is a good sign... in the sense that this particular pitch will hopefully not flatten out that much at all as the game goes on.

Re NC
I was at Wormsley on Sunday (and damn cold it was after tea, I even put my leather jacket on ).It's a bit strange to criticise a centurion -and well done to him for hanging in there coz I thought we were dead with 5 overs to go-but there was one aspect of his game that worried me. He seemed to have an amazing knack of hitting the fielders . Towards the end short cover was guarding a huge space behind him but I think he went home with sore fingers. I haven't seen enough of Nick to know if this was a one off,but if not it may go some way to explaining why he looks sound but doesn't seem to trouble the scorers regularly enough.Despite this starting as a criticism I actually wonder if he has a lot more to give if he can get his placement sorted out.
Just a thought and I'm in the optimists camp !

04/05/2011 21:19
No word from any SCCC official re:today's play on the official site.

There are comments from Craig.

I think his comments reflect the real uncertainty about how the pitch will play.

Craig says that he 'hopes 309 will be a good score.'

He says that he thought Worcs bowled well all day and that the ball 'did a bit,' off the surface all day.

But he may suspect that the weather played a big part in that as he says that 'If it stays overcast and the bowlers put it in the right place, they should get something out of it.'

Grockle
04/05/2011 21:44
Balls were rising on a length and not rising on a length so there is some real uncertainty for the batsman

I'm not sure now whether I'd like to see Pete below 7 until Lewis has a feel for first team work.

The tail worked well with him today because he has a level of confidence in his ability at present to work the ball when he gets the chance.

He also had faith in Gemaal especially to hold his end up and therefore was able to choose from ball three of an over which was the best ball to take - a loose ball at 4 could be murdered because it was there but a ball that went for two could also be taken because Gemaal was solid and they could gamble on a single ball at 5 or 6 and if it didn't come no worry.

Gemaal was extremely unlucky to be the victim of an absolutely terrible LBW decision.

Steve was less likely to score and so Pete changed his role and spent a lot of time talking to Steve about what he wanted.

Charl was going to take a single irrespective of what he hit and no more and when he came in Pete could up the game to take as much as possible off any ball he got to face - hence the 10 runs to 300.

Once that was achieved he basically said to CW - get what you can and if we make it to stumps so be it - Charl smacked 8 off two and then went.

I'm not sure anyone else in the present line-up could do that.

We got to 300 because of the big hitting talent of Peter and the relationship he has developed with the last 3 because he has that level of ability at the moment.

He marshalled the tail and they worked for him and that has to be good. It won't always work and he will be left hanging more times than scoring big but if you want a tail to wag you can't have it both way because tails wag better when a talented and confident batsmen takes responsibility for their batting strategy.

Met Office forecast, in contrast to the Beeb one, seems to be okay for all four days of the game now.

But what's the actual weather like down there today?

It looks like being a fairly shocking day in London today (although it was not forecast to be.) There is a heavy, oppressive atmosphere and glowering skies.

Provided it does not rain, I would welcome a heavy and oppressive atmosphere in TA1 - indeed I'm sure Charl and Pete would both be delighted with such an atmosphere.

Sounds like it is really attritional for the batsmen. Anything over 280 - 300 should be a decent total to defend if conditions remain the same.

As for this game;

I'd say we will be in one of those situations tomorrow where our chances of winning the match will probably be improved if we get bowled out. If, instead, it becomes a 'declaration,' second innings then the match will probably be a draw if Saturday's forecast is actually realised.

Of course, being bowled out might also present Worcs with a chance of victory.

They are not used to wins though. On the Beeb I think they said earlier that Worcs have won something like 4 of 51 matches at Div One level. And I think they've lost all three this season.

On balance I think I'd like to see a rip-roaring morning session in which we score about 125 runs but they take the remaining wickets. That should leave us two sessions to try to get the game won though, of course, if they don't lose many wkts they might then win the game on Sat if the rain does not arrive.

Incidentally, I was not saying that I thought it sounded as though Kirby had bowled poorly, just that he'd been expensive. At the time he'd taken one wicket, but went on to take four, so well done to him.

The man himself, however, seems to feel that he was slightly flattered by his figures.

He also seems to feel that we have still to fully fire as a bowling unit, saying that certain people have bowled well at certain times but that we've yet to get everyone hitting the right areas in partnerships.

My feeling at the half way stage is that Worcs have bowled better than us in the match...but we have batted better. Our players have shown the application that was sadly missing batting against Warks and Lancs whereas Worcs have been very gung-ho going for fast runs and champagne shots. We owe our lead to the one really decent partnership of the match. If we get no rain, we should win. But I'm nervous of it turning out to be like the Kent home match last season..its going to be hard to time the declaration...

It is a matter of opinion but after seeing both days and seeing that it was sunny today I would say it may be the pitch that is making the ball do things.

I have been wondering if that machine that was used in the winter on the square is effecting how the ball bounce when the ball hits one of the holes made from the machine.

I was at Taunton all day yesterday and today, and my impression was that the pitch was as difficult to bat on after tea today as at any time in the match. It doesn't appear to be getting any easier.
Well done to Kirby for his wickets today. he bowled with his usual fire. Also well done to Lewis for his first wicket in 1st Class cricket.

One of the bog questions yesterday was whether 309 was a par score. On todays evidence it was slightly better. If possible Hildy and other need to give us a lead of 325.

Thanks to all re:comments vs the pitch.

In the light of these, I think we may be in a really strong position.

We all know that various club officials have complained in the past about pitches being too flat on the final day but it does not sound as though that is liable to be a problem this time.

Looks like an awful shot, doesn't it? If memory serves me right, I think it was early in Suppiah's first over?

Also, I got the impression from following on Cricinfo that Worcs, esp when Kervezee and Andrew were together, thye seemed to be throwing the bat somewhat? Wonder what their motivation was - desperation on a tough pitch?

No (though it could be arranged) but I do get to comment as a supporter on what I see as a derogatory reference to a player or players from another poster.

You seem to identify these two players and isolate them as if they are of some other 'type' or 'class' when actually everyone in this side comes from somewhere and then become part of a unit that I call "Somerset" (along with another couple of thousand people) while you seem to still see them as something seperate to that because of where they came from.

I'll comment on what I feel insults my side or members of it and I'm also sorry but you'll just have to put up with that as well because I have all the freedoms that you have - this side of libel of course.:-)

I wonder, Grockle if said attendee of the press box can send such a comment to the national press because I read at the weekend that 'Hildreth will have to overcome the notion that runs at Taunton are cheap runs.'

It is true that in 2009 batsmen averaged a barmy 57 runs per wicket at HQ. But during the 2010 season in which James excelled average innings at HQ were at their lowest level for at least a decade. But it seems much of the national media cannot be bothered to update themselves.

There's never, ever been anything wrong with the wickets at Taunton, or on any other County ground for that matter.

Every match has two of them, and they each comprise of 5 separate pieces of wood. I am though pleased to hear that some in the Taunton Press Box seem to be of the opinion that "during the summer we are going to see some excellent matches, if there are more of this type of surface."

I come back to the point made many times before, and as I understand it, was one of the suggestions made by our previous Head Groundsman before he left, barring the use of the heavy roller once the match has started. THAT IMO is the most significant change made at Taunton, and many other grounds.

AGod
06/05/2011 09:47
Strongly suspect that you are right, Old Boy.

I suspect Ravi Bopara would agree too because, having passed up the IPL to chase the England place that has, hitherto, been held by LoL's hero, Bopara went on a rant about how "a combination of the Tiflex ball and the absence of a heavy roller would mean rubbish cricket in Division Two."

I think by "rubbish," Bopara clearly meant loaded in favour of the ball.

I saw a Beeb forecast that I left the house which suggested that;

a) Play at Taunton might be curtailed early today.

b) There will be very heavy thundery rain overnight.

c) All actual wet stuff coming from the skies will have departed Somerset by first thing in the morning on Saturday. So, if we can get things dry quickly, it would appear from that forecast, at least, that we might get a full day's play on Saturday, after all.

d) The forecast strongly suggests that the game at Hove will, on Saturday, be all but certain to bear the dreaded legend "match abandoned - rain." I would guess that the match at Nottingham might suffer the same fate. If the game at Edgbaston lasts that long (doubtful) it looks like it would probably get away with it.

Mike TA1

Gidman said: "We're really struggling with the lack of heavy roller here and it's making a big difference in the wicket. Although we can still prepare a pitch as usual, we cannot use the heavy roller once the toss has taken place.

"It's given rise to conditions we have never experienced before and it's something we're going to have to come to terms with. The rules are not going to change and we may have to look at the way we approach our batting in Bristol."

I don't think that at 60 for 1, chasing more than their first innings score, and the second highest total of the match, an assessment that "Worcs should do this" is a fair one, even from a neutral stand-point, let alone from a supporter. And subsequent events have shown it to be quite a bit wide of the mark.
I won't hold my breath waiting for an acknowledgement of the error, though. A profoundly insightful justification of why it was the right assessment at the time is far more likely to be forthcoming.

Nope. Never said anything about being too expensive 'to get anyone out,' but nice try.

On the contrary, my thoughts about both recruits from Gloucs in pre-season were that their records suggested that they would be more expensive than the bowlers that they replaced BUT that their records also suggested they should add extra penetration. That (combined with the elongated tail) it why my pre-season prediction was that we would both win more CC games this season, whislt also proving easier to beat.. therefore we would both win more often and lose more often in the CC this season. Or, to put it another way, draw less often.

Barring an awful weather-event, there will indeed have been results in each of our first four games this season...

To be fair to all, I think the issue here is AG's tendency to post so often and to re-assess the state of the game and the players' individual situation on a VERY regular basis.

As a well-known sage is often misquoted as saying: Class is permanent, form is temporary - but not THAT temporary!

Anyway, need a wicket now, and Charl has just been slogged for a single, so he should be taken off straightaway.

Yours, in the spirit...

And you regularly give the impression that you would rather devote more time to passing judgement on me than giving your own thoughts on proceedings... or at least you appear to have offered no thoughts at all during the course of this match, other than those related to things that I have said.

To be clear, FE, I am interested in your opinions about the CRICKET. I have no interest in posts of yours which attempt to reproach me for what I have said.

You could simply have said, could you not, something along the lines of;

"Seeing as Worcestershire will need to score the second highest total of the match, I think AG will be proved completely wrong and we will win this match comfortably," (or whatever it was that you believed the situation was at the time.)

The above would be more in the realm of normal debate than some sarcastic "Jeez," comment accompanied by zero statement from yourself of what you, yourself, expected to happen (at that juncture).

I did hear an improbably story yesterday that Richardson has participated in a last wicket stand worth more than 200 runs, I believe. I think this is when he was with Middx?

Still, one also has to assume that it must have been;

Edinburgh - I think popular opinion amongst the Counties and many cricket fans is that the pitch inspectors have effectively given up imposing penalties no matter how poor the pitch.

Not that I have the impression that this pitch was 'poor.'

But there has been the odd controversial pitch in recent years. In particular I remember a "muppet," tirade directed at the inspectors (in print) by Rob Key after a Kent loss up North ... I think it was at Liverpool, though it might have been at Durham.

I'm really not trying to pick a fight here..................honestly..............but when was the position ever really unpromising?
This looks to me like a convincing victory, in a game which we may not have totally dominated, but in which we could never really be said to have been behind.
They had only one partnership over 40 in their second knock, and that was over with them still 200 runs adrift.
What more could we want, or reasonably expect?

SheptonPaul
06/05/2011 18:26
You're quite correct, FE (winking smiley). Occasionally, it might have looked dodgy - 50odd for 3 in first innings, Worcs 200-4 in theirs, SCCC 140-8 this morning (all figures approximate!). But we were never really in trouble.

If Taunton wickets are going to be likle this from hereon, we have to be a little careful (a) to always win the toss; (b) to make the right choice when we do, and (c) to still play really well, esp against better sides than Worcs. Also, we Grockles will possibly also have to adjust our mindsets, in thet (a) 250-300 may be a good score at Taunton; (b) a 5-seamer attack MAY win games !! and (c) any team chasing "only" 250 in the fourth innings might struggle to get there. Oh, and we can't win the toss, bat, and automatically expect 500+!

Well played Somerset. Another good win and our title challenge gathers momentum.

I still maintain they bowled better than us but we batted better. In a low scoring match, the side who has the one big partnership of the game will usually triumph. It was a brilliant effort by Craig and Compo and the 2nd session of the first day was the most important and relevant of the entire game. Our attack is still going for too many runs per over but they are taking wickets and those wickets are being shared nicely around. Credit to GH in his second spell because his match seemed to be going nowhere..how transformed he was after getting his first wicket..well done to Marcus too for switching his end. Nice dilema now when Alf is back!

Thanks too to the fixture planners! Having lost the first two matches, the last thing we could have done with was a trip to Notts, Yorks or Durham next. The fixture card, however, shone more sweetly on us and gave us possibly the two weakest sides in the division. But you can only beat who's in front of you! Two good wins..46 points...and now we can test how far we've come with a really tough away match at the Riverside...

So tonight....2 more CC wins than at this stage last season...5 wins in a row in all cricket...two of our best players yet to return...our two new bowlers both settling in and taking wickets..and reasonable debuts by the young players...

Anybody else sharing my optimism and pre-season feeling that we have a real chance this year??????????!!!

This may sound a silly thing to say when twenty wickets fell on a bowler’s friendly pitch but it was the batsmen that won us the match.

Both teams bowled well in this match and deserves praise, the difference was that 71 lead we had from our batsmen in the first innings.

Somerset’s fielding today was very good, Hussain’s wickets started to come when he changed to the OP end.

Mind you, you can’t win a match without both the batsmen and bowlers both doing their job.

Now I am going to upload my photos.

Anybody reading my posts..even after Warks..will know I am very much the optimist about us winning something this season!!! Yes I agree...a side winning without playing at 100% is a very dangerous side indeed! Look at Man Utd this season! And we will need to improve some aspects of our game to get anything at the Riverside. But hey you can't win every match..I'd take a high scoring draw up there!!

One aspect of today that hasn't been much commented on yet was our (close) catching! There were some stunners taken in the slips..Hildy looks a natural there in Kartik;s absence. Contrast that to Worcs..who badly missed Kieswetter in the deep when he was in the 50s I think...

My take would be that the more the pitch is in favour of the bowler, the fewer bowlers we are likely to need?

If it's a total flat track, you don't need many batsmen and you might as well experiment, including with guys like, say, Mike Munday, who have considerable wicket-taking potential but might not be "Mr Reliable."

It's almost always a classic sign of quality. It's the same thing that James did last year. He was, repeatedly, a scorer of a disproportionate number of runs in SCCC games last year. Craig did it in this game. We are fortunate indeed to have (at least) three such players with such ability - those two and the boss. At the same time, I don't think Jos's contribution in the second dig should be underestimated. Yes, if you just look at the numbers we would have won the game (just) anyway. BUT.. that's not realistic, cricket is mainly about pressure, and they would not have been under much but for Jos's innings, IMO.

Think you are spot on about the batsmen winning it.

I've always believed in opposites... flat type pitch? bowling will be decisive. Pitch loaded in favour of the bowler? batting will be decisive.

This could yet turn out to be what we've all hoped for. Great results with those brought in as well as blooding the youngsters who have come through the (ECB acclaimed, primary County Academy) system.

Isn't this the way that County Cricket is supposed to work?

So good to think that things are coming onstream now, with reserves and succession planning in place to see a potentially seamless transition in years to come.

Of course, we may want to get a specialist spinner in for that one as it's often a slow turner at Hove.

Roy was right in saying that there were only really three batsmen who gave their wicket away.

I am certain that Mr Kerslake’s above quote wasn’t intended to be in the least bit complacent, in so much as he considered that the end result going in our favour overrode whatever shortcomings there were from some of our team. As I have said previously on here, it was a good win for our team and they are to be congratulated, but even on Taunton’s “more evenly – balanced” pitches we are, I would expect, going to have to play better against more testing opposition.

“Only three” may be an improvement in numbers in this respect from whatsoever may have happened in previous CC games, but it would appear that there is still room for improvement. Surely, every batsman (from No. 1 to No. 11 inclusive) should sell his wicket dearly, and not simply give it away?

As an adjunct to this thought, I still laugh at the antics of one of Roy Kerslake’s successors as Somerset captain – namely one D.B. Close. It occurred during a Gillette Cup quarter final against the mighty Surrey side at Taunton, and was one of the early matches that Ian Botham played for Somerset.

Surrey were batting when there was a mix – up in the running between the wickets. The ball was fielded by Botham who was I suppose some 15 yards from the unguarded wicket, and with both batsmen stranded at the other end.

I thought there and then (and presumably so did Close) that Botham should have picked up the ball and run with it to break the stumps, as there was no other fielder close by. The batsman would not have been able to regain his ground. But not so for Mr. Botham – with one stump to aim at, he threw the ball from where he was and broke the stumps with his throw. The batsman (New Zealander Geoff Howarth) trudged angrily off the field of play. Close looked demented – his eyes almost bulging out of their sockets and proceeded to march over to Botham to give him what appeared to be, from a distance anyway, a right royal rollicking. Botham shrugged his shoulders and his body language indicated that he was trying to justify his spontaneous action to his skipper on the grounds that the batsman was out anyway – so what’s the problem? Perhaps there wasn’t a problem in as much as the game resulted in a win for Somerset, as indeed it did yesterday.

The stories about Close are of course legend, but I am certain that the three batsman who “gave their wicket away” in the last game would, had Close been captain, have been made only too aware of it.

As we all know from last season, County Championships can be decided by the narrowest of margins in terms of points, and in turn those points can be decided by perhaps a single run or even a wicket.

Finally, when wickets tumble in a CC game as a result of the pitch and / or conditions, doesn’t it sometimes result in exciting cricket? Purely, MHO, of course.

In 2009 batting teams averaged an absurd 57 runs per wicket at HQb. There's a table in Wisden showing Taunton over the past ten years. In most years the average runs per wicket was about 40. In 2010, that number was lower. There will need to be some good scores in the remaining six games if the downward trend since the anomalous '57' reading from 2009 is not to continue.

In case anyone is interested, here is the list; In (parentheses) is the national average.

2000 141 wickets @ 40.02 (28.98)

2001 204 wickets @ 36.97 (33.55)

2002 209 wickets @ 40.22 (33.40)

2003 202 wickets @ 40 (33.50)

2004 183 wickets @ 38.21 (35.54)

2005 177 wickets @ 43.36 (34.62)

2006 183 wickets @ 41.68 (36.38)

2007 217 wickets @ 44.42 (34.23)

2008 222 wickets @35.36 (32.49)

2009 175 wickets @ 57.52 (35.90)

2010 204 wickets @ 34.96 (30.58)

In 2011? Warks got 642 for 10 Don't remember what we got, but it was probably about 280 for 20? Then we made about 490 for 20 vs Worcs and they made about 390 for 20.

The numbers above are just guestimates, have not looked at the totals but they would give a figure of about 26 runs per wicket in 2011.

Clarence - I think the interpretation of Roy Kerslake's comment rests, at least in part, on whether or not he meant that 3 of the people that batted in the match threw their wickets away or that 3 specialist batsmen threw their wickets away?

Either way, the good thing - as you so rightly suggest - is that it suggests that, unlike Lancashire, we are still not yet playing to our full potential.

Incidentally re: the unexpectedly strong start that Lancashire have made... I wonder to what extent this will rehabilitate the reputation of one P Moores Esq?

My assumption had always been that the list of key influences on Sussex's CC success began with Mushtaq, included a few other excellent players like Murray Goodwin and ended with Chris Adams.

However, Moores' men have enjoyed a spectacular start to this season whereas Surrey continue to labour under Chris Adams (though, of course the role that Adams plays at Surrey is different to that at Sussex.)

I had an interesting day with people coming and speaking to me, one was a professional photographer who I hadn’t seen until this season he introduced himself and we had a long chat about photography, he had the top of the range camera equipment but he did say my camera was a good one.

Mike - A big thanks from me for the excellent photos as well. I know how much time and concentration it takes to get the type of shot you excel at. With respect to the pro's comment about your camera being a good one, I rather suspect that the real talent is not so much in the equipment but in the photographer. I'm sure you'd do well with a Box Brownie.

Thanks again and please keep the shots coming.

or are the Grockle's commentators being unfair?

Going through yesterday's comments and found this.

There are no Grockle's commentators so they can't be unfair I'm afraid.

The commentary efforts are organised by the club who supply everything related to it. Some of the present team are Somerset born and are therefore not Grockles themselves (unless you are looking at it from a Devon point of view).

All the commentators are volunteers and the only link to this site is the fact that the web moderator for this site is a member of that team.

On that very subject Grockle, is there any background information on the commentary team available anywhere? I'm thinking of just a very basic overview of who they are, previous cricketing experience (if any), why they volunteered etc. I have no hidden agenda here, it's just that as a frequent listener to the service I've wondered who the team are. Obviously we know a bit about Roy Kerslake and your good self, but I don't think I recognize any of the other names.

How are new commentators recruited? Do they volunteer their services to SCCC or does the club approach likely candidates?

In answer to your question about commentators Kingston; I doubt it.

I'm sure while they are on if you ask them the question they will happily expand on their cricketing expertise.

As you have seen from my own commentary sessions there is little to expand on. I have little if any cricketing playing expertise since school (though I did once score 25 retired in a scratch game against Bristol University). Not easy to be a semi professional musician and play on weekends I suppose.

I only started watching the game regularly in a purely live context in '94 when I moved to outside of Taunton and as Roy will tell you with a great deal of amusement I can't tell left from right or "off" from "leg" on a regular basis.

They are mostly long time watchers of the county and some have a bit of earlier on air experience though it is also good to see a few younger members taking up the baton like Roy's son Jon.

It's just fun to do really.

How very considerate of the Club's President to show such interest and concern to the fortunes of the opposition.

On the other hand, one of the commentators (Mr Paul Harper) who was behind the microphone during the afternoon session yesterday, gave the impression to all listeners that Willoughby had done just that: - viz. "thrown his wicket away" - in Somerset's second innings anyway.

"Mustn't keep on about it, I suppose," he said somewhat reluctantly before the start of Worcestershire's second knock.

There you go. That's someone else's opinion.

I wonder who the three were whom Mr. K had in mind? Not being there, I was unaware that the Somerset batting display was obviously faultless throughout the game, particularly having read some of the comments posted on here concerning the running out of Hildreth during his first innings time at the crease with Compton.

Maybe that doesn’t come into Mr. K’s definition of throwing one’s wicket away?

Well it shows the level of neutrality that Roy maintains when commentating for the public - wish I could do the same sometimes. A fair minded man who assesses with considerable skill, on merit and always gives credit where it is due IMHO

We were talking about the general good quality of the game and the fact that batsmen had to work for their runs and the bowlers for their wickets. I think the reference was made towards the Worcestershire middle order in the second innings - wasn't there to see it myself so couldn't comment

Ref Mr Hildreth's demise - have to agree with the assessment above. Very hard to throw your wicket away when you actually don't face a ball. ;-)

It only becomes "very hard" to do when you stay in your crease, and poor James obviously didn't.

Still, it all worked out OK in the end.

One suspects though that next time Compton calls James for a quick single in a CC game, James may very well remain rooted to the spot.

If there is any subsequent confusion in a CC game, I rather think that Compton owes it to James to give himself up, if the situation presents itself.

Sadly pedantic but never mind.

However the twist is attempted, anyone seeing it or commenting on it would have put the fault 100% on the batsman calling and that batsman was not James Hildreth.

And even if Mr Hildreth had shouted NO and stayed in his crease he would still not have thrown HIS wicket away because in that scenario the wicket 'thrown' would have been Mr Compton's by MrCompton

Therefore under no circumstances I can see did James throw anything (except things about the changing room on his return perhaps) :=)

Congratulations to Somerset on a well deserved win.

I spent the 3 days at the County Ground and greatly enjoyed the match. An excellent century from Craig, six wickets from Gemaal, excellent bowling from Worcs and a total of 40 wickets in just under 3 days.

Also, some of the catching and fielding by Somerset was superb. The catches taken in the slips by Messrs Trescothick & Hildreth were of a high order and the work in the covers from Jos, Nick, Arul and lewis was great to see.

Onwards and upwards.

A God isn't the decline in the number of runs per wicket at Taunton a great tribute the club strategy that has seen the bat dominance identified as a barrier to the club's success.

Last season and it seems this, green bowler friendly wickets have been created with the aim of creating a proper balance and a good chance of a result.

It gives our bowlers encouragement and as we've seen, Hussein and Kirby have begun to take advantage. Long may it continue for this looked to be a really involving game of cricket.

Interestingly some clubs are showing signs of copying our strategy. Some at lamacashire have suggestign being away from old Trafford temporarily is a blessing as they have a better chance of results at Liverpool.

Hampshire are the ones who've struggled with the ball this season as the Rose Bowl looks as dead as a dodo.

By contrast, in the middle of May last year, Notts having played one FEWER game than SCCC were 54 points ahead of us!!!!

Last year the two season opening defeats were followed up with three draws, as opposed to the two wins that we have managed this time.

Rain was largely responsible for two of the three draws that followed the Notts and Yorks defeats. In one of them - at Old Trafford - SCCC would surely have won, but for rain.

I think that TRES has proved himself to be a very astute leader, particularly in view of his lack of batting success (apart from the one biggy). The handling of his limited resources has been very clever, and I believe that it is important that he and the selectors 'blood' as many of his promising youngsters before the wanderers come back from their travels. He needs to know what each of them is capable of, so that in an emergency he can chose wisely and appropriately.
So far he and the selectors have raised the hopes of us all, and long may it continue.

Tomorrow is your lot WSM. He goes to join the SL team after that.

He has been largely ineffective - mostly because he seems to be the wrong man for this part of our season and we've coped without him - shows how valuable a slow man MK is. Wicket taking spinners are not two a penny and Ajantha has not been a mystery to most.

Lessons for next year I think.

As OB states younger guys have been blooded with interesting results. Looking at the way Damien Wright bowled we really ought to look at him seriously if we have a gap in the spring - such a wholehearted cricketer.

What a difference a fortnight makes huh? The beginning was a nightmare but the world did not end it seems.

Ajantha did not save our season and the world did not end.

The newbies had a variable beginning and the rest of the side worked to fill the holes until things turned...and the world did not end.

Not out of the woods yet and the next couple of games could have major influences on the stuff the other side of the hit and giggle but we have shown the capacity to cope and I hope we continue to do so.

I think it's probably a good idea to put money on most of the England batsmen to score heavily vs Sri Lanka.

No Malinga. No Murali. Mendis, apparently, in no real from.

Another Sri Lankan who has looked good to me in international cricket is the SLA, Rangana Herath. But he had a stint in county cricket with Hants last season and, apparently, bowled to no great effect taking, I think, 10 wickets at 58.

Then there was Malinga Bandara who played 6 matches for Kent last season. He's a leg-spinner and in his case it was not in the early part of the season. Averaged 41.

Perhaps the struggles of these guys are, more than anything, an indication of the quality in Div One?

Earlier in the season, Kent had Makhaya Ntini. Now he did do well.

If we need to cover Kartik again next season (as we presuambly will if Kartik is retained as main overseas player?) and if Damien Wright has a better/longer offer on the table (e..g from Worcs), then I wonder if we might show some interest in Ntini?

We are playing well at present. But perhaps a note of caution is still in order - in the last two games we have beaten the current bottom two teams in the championship. In the first two games we lost to two of the current top five.

So, as the players and coaches keep repeating, the team still needs to improve.

The verdict so far:

Bowling: with Kirby and Hussain added, the bowling attack looks genuinely improved, with more options, especially when Kartik and Thomas get back from the IPL.

Batting: a bit of a worry, with some under-performance so far, and a lack of quality back-ups if/when Kieswetter, Hildreth and Trego get called up for England action.

Overall: the prospects look good for the season as a whole, but still it's going to be a hard fight to overcome the likes of Durham, Lancashire, Notts, etc. in the championship and the other tournaments.

If you'd have got yourself down to Taunton a bit more often you'd have seen that green topped wickets are nothing new, it's almost laughable to suggest otherwise.
The changes, long called for, have been the main difference in the pitches behaving differently, it's pretty obvious, also you forget that changes were made to the sqaure a few seasons ago....convenient of course.
But then, as we all know, Taunton was such a desperate place to watch cricket......except for those of us who actually went.

Chinaman - a fair summary. I do not know whether Lancs can keep up their astonishingly good start. I would guess that most of their players must all currently be playing at their absolute best for them to be in the position that they are in?

If so, then it will be difficult to keep that up all season.

Conversely, for our guys, we know for certain (from experience) that certain players are not yet operating at 100%.... there is obviously more to come from both Marcus and James, for example. And woe betide our opponents once young Mr Buttler really gets into his stride in first-class cricket. In terms of the batting, arguably only Craig and Pete are currently operating at (or very close) to 100%.

Indeed, the team as a whole was so far off the pace at the start of the season, that we must have a greater distance between floor and ceiling than any of the other teams.

Other teams may be worried, that despite having given one really poor performance and one execrable one within our first four games, we are only 20 or so points off the lead, having won the last two.

The arrow on our first-class season certainly seems to be pointing up, with Hussain hitting his stride in the most recent game.

Still,it seems unlikely that we will be able to do what we did for most of last season.... that is picking the same XI almost every week.

There's that Sussex game that we know is coming up. And I wouldn't entirely discount the prospect of Hildreth taking the Collingwood vacancy.#

# That said I read something from Geoff Miller about this. And Miller seemed to make a point of saying that 'form in the county game is not necessarily important.'

I took this as a possible warning that they are getting ready to give the job to Eoin Morgan, by default. If so, the 'form spiel,' would make sense because Morgan's performances in first-class cricket are often ordinary.

There is still a balance between the half empty and the half full crew.

The half empty contingent still have things to hold on to after their pessimism was rewarded and then dashed in these first four games.

The half full crew struggled to find positives in a batting display of infantile proportions in the first game and not much at Liverpool either. Then things looked up and hopes of the positivists took a turn for the better.

Its about one all with an hour to play now but who will be 'crowing' at the start of the T20?

Those who revel in predicting the failure of the best laid plans or those with the maroon coloured specs who will always look for sunshine in the days of darkest cloud.

I just hope the next two games go well because I feel sorry for people whose main aim in their cricketing life is to find things to be miserable about in the summer.

There's the winter for all that boys and girls enjoy the sunshine! Watch it all and then revel in 'if only' as the evenings get darker - there's plenty of opportunity.

“It’s no secret that we have been trying for years to get more pace into the wickets at the County Ground to ensure a fairer contest between bat and ball.

For all three days of the Worcestershire game we saw a pitch that rewarded good seam bowling, while allowing batsmen prepared to show the necessary application an opportunity to make runs.

So it’s timely to offer a pat on the back to groundsman Simon Lee and his staff, who have worked very hard to help produce the sort of pitch that should enable us to make home advantage tell, rather than finding it so hard to bowl opponents out twice at Taunton.

We didn’t bat particularly well in our second innings, and not for the first time this season we probably played too many shots at a time when we needed to occupy the crease for longer. I will continue to impress the importance of taking up time in four – day games rather than simply looking to play shots wherever possible.”

I was heartened to read the above from Brian Rose’s column in today’s ‘Sunday Independent’, when he added that the “pitch is a credit to groundsmen.”

With more pace expected in our pitches from now on, we need to strike up more good partnerships with bat and ball, because “we didn’t bat particularly well in our second innings (v. Worcestershire) and Jos Buttler’s brilliant cameo of 46 not out at the end was absolutely crucial in giving us a defendable lead.”

As always, I can’t argue with any of that, Brian.

08/05/2011 13:20
Yeah, on the list of strengths of our SCCC team, studied crease occupation is probably not high on that list. It's (mainly) an exciting, stroke-playing side. If the pitches are going to help the pace bowlers on a more regular basis (which remains to be seen) then periods in which consolidation is necessary may occur more frequently.

HOWEVER... there are two ways (to my mind) in which batsmen can effectively prove match-winners in first-class cricket on surfaces favouring the ball;

One way is to patiently assemble a score which is, by some distance, the biggest of the match. This requires tremendous defensive technique and patience and judgement of which balls to hit.

The other is to put the opposition firmly on the back foot, by making a good score (for the conditions) very quickly. This can really change the course of low-scoring games.

Either way can lead to wins .. we have some people that are capable of the first mode but probably have more that are capable of the second method.

Noises were 3000 attendance, surely we should/could expect more for local derby on a sunny day at HQ?

I suggest 5000 in at £15 would make more than 3000 at £25 (i know paying element mixed with members)

"Requiring 257 for victory, Worcestershire, aided by some innocuous early Somerset bowling, made a steady start until Mitchell (20) lost his leg stump to an inswinging Charl Willoughby yorker in the 13th over. Despite the breakthrough, the visitors looked relatively settled at 67-1"

Obviously they went on to praise the subsequent bowling performance, the result and Hussain in particular, but those of us who were not confident of a Somerset victory at this very point were not alone.
