Peter Trego's first Somerset five fer was just what the side needed with the loss of Philander to whatever 'injury' or interference kept him from the pitch. As a new ball bowler he took the Notts batting line-up apart and despite the usual and frustrating defiance from Chris Read Somerset took them out for 162. Now we need a batting performance that puts this game out of the home side's reach. A hobbling Trescothick isn't what we wanted however.

Marcus Trescothick has no real bowling options returning to the fold for this encounter. Adam Dibble's injury will keep him out for longer than expected and the one that has sidelined Gemaal Hussain is not going to be sorted any time soon. Therefore he has to look towards Craig Meschede and Lewis Gregory for seam support. Peter Trego has hopefully now got himself into first class form after his heroics in the second Edgbaston innings that nearly took the game from Warwickshire. The batting? Well that has some way to go yet and we may look to Nick Compton once more to hold the "Wobbly Six" together.
The Somerset side will include;
Trescothick, Suppiah, Compton, Hildreth, Kieswetter, Buttler, Trego, Dockrell, Kirby
plus two of the players mentioned.
This is because it seems that Vernon Philander has picked up a slight back 'niggle' and will be rested for this game to protect his back and ensure we get the most out of him for the resat of his stay. At least that is the Somerset stance. The South African medical team's stance is that he is being rested for this game - which was agreed and will only play two game spells with a rest on the third. Somerset deny this is an official agreement. I personally don't care. The man is either a Somerset bowler or he can take a long rest before the Test series or go home for a while and come back with the team he plays for. If he is not at Taunton to play cricket when required for Somerset then he can leave on the next train to London or wherever in this writer's opinion.
However, it may be a chance to shine for one of the younger home developed. One would expect Craig Meschede to still hold the front postion on the selection list but Lewis Gregory is also expected to take a place in the side. A new ball attack of Steve Kirby and Pete Trego is not what we expected to field at Trent Bridge but that is what we have and we'll have to do the best with it we can.
And the best of it we made!! Pete cut through the front end of Notts batting line-up like the proverbial knife. In between the rain of a shortened first day, the Mighty Trigger took out former teammate Neil Edwards and Lumb before they got to 15. Craig Meschede once again celebrated his first change status with Hales' wicket before the man of the moment got a third when Patel fliped on to Arul and Notts were reeling at 20 for 4!!
Kirby removed Taylor and Lewis skittled Mullaney in between the rain drops and while Read held up one end and passed 50, his side finished the first day on 93 for 6!!

Would Notts get to three figures? Well Trigger was keen to ensure that would not be the case and Franks obliged by becoming his fourth wicket at 97, however Ben Phillips got over the 100 before he was caught behind to give the Somerset allrounder his first Championship five fer (can you believe that?) at 101. Fletcher became Kirbs' second victim at 106 and we all hoped for a BIG first innings score. But Gurney and that man Read stubbornly held out for over 50 runs before we finished them off as Gurney was castled by Steve K with the score on 162 and the Notts wicketkeeper the owner of an excellent ton (104) for his county.
Unfortunately Marcus Trescothick went over on that dubious ankle just before the home side were dismissed and he did not open for his team. Instead Lewis Gregory strided out with Arul to start the innings. This seems to make sense just before kunch on Day 2. Lewis has opened before and with Nick being so important presently at number 3 it was a decent decision. But could the batting, that has been less than robust, make the most of the position it had been presented with by the bowlers, especially Trego's 5 for 53 in 20 overs?

Hoping the Met Office forecast is right and the Beeb one wrong.
If Met Office are right, should at least be plenty of play on Fri and Sat.
I don't think much will happen on day one. It's forecast to be thundery with heavy showers, and that would come on top of prolonged rain today and tonight.
I don't think Marcus will be in much doubt as to what to do should he be fortunate enough to win this toss.

We currently have a lack of bowlers, especially with our overseas signing not going to be available every game and likely to miss Trent Bridge! With Alfie on holiday in India, perhaps our Director of Cricket will have some answers for us.

It is bad news re: Dibble. An intercostal injury meaning that he will be out for several weeks, apparently.

I note that Marcus mentions that in previous trips to Trent Bridge we've been "unlucky," to come up against Stuart Broad.
Personally, I'm always more concerned about Andre Adams. He certainly caused massive problems at Taunton last season. And he also bowled better than Broad in the first innings at Trent Bridge last season (at least for the first 80 or so overs of the innings.)

I suspect that Dibble's injury must be a recurrence of what he had before (its not just seen main site). If that is the case then its a case of trying to get them fit before they are actually ready....Hussain being the same. He will need to get back pronto!!

I remember 50 odd years ago in my late teens and early twenties as a pretty quick seamer playing for Taunton and probably because I didn't really finish growing completely until my mid-twenties. Twinges and muscle problems were common and needed some careful handling. However, at club level one tended to play through the pain, but that would not be possible for young professionals then or now.

Nottingham isn't "oop north" it's the top end of the midlands. Newcastle has clouds as far as the eye can (can't) see after torrential rain yesterday. I'm glad I've got tickets for the theatre this afternoon
I read that the team would be finalsed after considering one or two "unspecified" injuries. Sutton may have been called up as cover in case!!!

Edit - It appears that Cricket South Africa have had a hand in the absence of Philander from this game. Just two games into the season, they were already uneasy about the demands upon him. He might well have proved hugely demanding in these conditions.

As for Mr 'Mendis' we didn't play him because he wasn't up to it in England. I doubt that is the assessment of VP.
However, should it be shown (by anyone but AG) that this 'injury' is an unsubtle way of not giving us the real reason for him not playing then not only will I have to say AG was right but also suggest we don't sign internationals in the future because the spending is a total waste of resources if we can't use them in situations where they are most important.

Mr Dobell has suggested that on the Circinfo blog that Cricket South Africa have indeed had a hand in Vern's absence for the game.
Well if that is true Mike then the portents of doom I went head to head with AG about were correct and Philander is an absolute waste of money!
Does that mean that after his efforts in the first game his seeming less effective second game was an indication of the poor boy crumbling under the effort?
Seems you were on the right track AG and Somerset are kowtowing to the demands of an international body. Can only suggest they stop using our league as a preparation point for their internationals in future and VP is the last bowling foreign international we consider.

There could be a very, very slight injury, the like of which Caddy and Willow would have bowled through every day and the like of which Vernon would be happy to bowl through (if permitted by his board).
In other words, an 'injury,' may be all a matter of degree rather than a matter of fabrication.

I can only assume that BR has deliberately kept quite about Philander's "ban" so that it didn't influence Notts selection??
Fair point AG - I think unless we get something "official" from BR or similar, it's all just speculation - albeit very disappointing whatever the explanation!

I certainly never contended that Vernon would be a "waste of money." There's a view that could be taken that 3 or 4 games of him is better than 6 or 7 of A N Other ordinary overseas bowler.
It IS though partly why I was so annoyed at not beating Warks, I'm afraid. We all knew that Philander's stint was not scheduled to be a long one. And I personally suspected that it would involve fewer games than we had been led to believe it might.
I'm going up there tomorrow, staying overnight, hoping to see play on Saturday too.
Of course, I would have loved to have seen Philander 'in the flesh.'
However, I would submit that watching the likes of Craig M and Lewis will be far more relevant to the future of SCCC and, indeed, more "interesting," from that point of view so I shall content myself with that.

Delighted to hear that Marcus is fielding a third man and has done throughout. Apparently, they had yet to see one at Trent Bridge this season.
It is probably my number one bug-bear. I HATE seeing numerous edges go for four.
Yardy played without one at Hove last season when they put us in in very difficult conditions and we made a HUGE number of runs from edges through there.

Story re: Philander apparently is a "back injury."
I guess we'll have to take that at face value.

On day one last year, the pitch was almost unplayable in the morning session and we made 48 for 4 from 26 overs. Chris Jones's heroic defiance for 70 minutes drastically reduced the length of time that Hildreth/Kieswetter needed to bat before lunch and they were then able to destroy Notts when play resumed and all the venom had gone out of the track.
No idea whether the same sort of thing will obtain with the pitch this time BUT if it does then it's absolutely pivotal that we have got rid of both of Hales and Patel already. Those are the two that, in my view, are most capable of scoring quickly and batting them into a strong position.. or would have been...

No idea whether the same sort of thing will obtain with the pitch this time BUT if it does then it's absolutely pivotal that we have got rid of both of Hales and Patel already. Those are the two that, in my view, are most capable of scoring quickly and batting them into a strong position.. or would have been...

News on Philander is that he has a minor back injury and is being rested for the Notts match so he can fulfil the rest of his contract.

SCCC tweet explains that the Philander absence is because of a minor back niggle. They are resting him in this game in order to hopefully ensure that he can bowl during the rest of his contract.

Since he was made captain Read is the main reason why Notts have always been up there among the most successful sides. Vastly vastly under-rated, and arguably has been the best keeper for a generation.

Crikey! I didn't realise I was stirring a hornets nest ref keepers! I still stick with Read for his calm temperament. The reason he was dropped was because the 'coaching genius' (so he tells us?) Duncan Fletcher didn't like him!

I would be tempted-now I'm back from the theatre and delighted with the cricket- to disopense with VP altogether. I didn't mind him geting used to English conditions while boosting us, but it is a 2 way street, I would also be tempted to always develop from within, because I still think Somerset ought to mean mainly Somerset (including Millfield) which is why I'm always thrilled when Pete does well.

My reading of it (and let's face it, we're ALL guessing) is that VP has a minor injury (which he'd normally have played through), but BR felt it was in our long-term interests, vis-a-vis the SA management and VP, to leave him out of this game. Part of BR's discussions pre-season with Gary Kirsten et al may well have been along the lines of "if he gets a minor injury, please rest him rather than playing him and risking longer-term, Test-tour-affecting, injury".
I don't think for a moment it's VP's fault, just a wise and sensible decision on Brian Rose's part.

VP bowled a lot of fruitless overs in the Warwickshire match. Was this more than the number per 4 day match that SA were expecting? This could be very tough on Tres as captain who at the end was using his 2 main strike weapons to try and get the victory at Edgbaston!!!

Roger - Given the strict criteria for a work permit that now exist, combined with a busy international schedule, I suspect it would be all but impossible for 18 counties to find an overseas player that could play the whole season.
I think that is correct it would be well nigh impossible to get one all season and would come down to money as we would all be chasing the same players and we know who would win that.

The point about who is paying is of course very important. We know where the counties stand in respect of centrally contracted England players. What sort of contract SA have with their players I don't know, but I would expect BR not to try to take a legalistic view of the situation but to operate on the basis of what he sees as the long term best interests of SCCC

I'd take average opposition partnerships of 16.2 per wicket any day of the week in a first up innings in a four day game. Don't really give a monkeys how they are made or who made them. It puts us in the driving seat any way you cut it.

Lewis has opened before in his career I believe and with Compo doing such an effective job at Number 3 why move him if you don't have to?

Well if he's not going to be a full blown seamer then he needs to be a top 6 batter or he'll end up being nothing in both skills and will lose his chance at a place in the future Somerset side. He does not seem to be the all rounder that George and Craig M could develop into so he has to look at a long term option at the front or somewhere at 3 to 5.

Word was at one time that Read wasn't being selected for England because he was 'too quiet' - see my posting on the Bullying thread.
Always a mistake not to have a third man in seaming conditions, I feel, and Compton has benefited from Read failing to emulate Tres in that regard.

In this match so far, 3 of our bowlers have recorded their best figures of the season so far..and so has Arul with the bat.
You could add Lewis to that and make 4, but ofc it's his first CC match of the season so that'd be a slightly false statistic.

According to the Somerset CCC twitter feed, Tres going for a scan before a decision is taken as to what further part he plays in the game.
The facebook info is that he is having a scan before it is decided whether he will bat or not!! He therefore probably won't bat today or at all!

We should have beaten Warks last week..we didn't because their 9th wicket put on over 50 runs in the second innings. A likely 19 point victory became a 3 point defeat because we couldn't clean up the tail
Today we had Notts at 106-9. One more wicket and we're batting after just an hour's play today, with a small target to chase to get an innings lead. But they added 50 odd for the last wicket, we now need an extra 50 runs for the lead and we've lost an hour, which could still be a big loss with the bad weather around.
So don't say 'who cares'! We should all care because, if we can just knock the tail over more quickly, we'll be looking a really decent side for the rest of the season.
I am not sure that the "tail" exists in the way it used to (CW excepted) We have batsmen like Max Waller who woudl be our tail who at a slightly lower level can post very big scores. We are not talking rabbits and headlights but competent batsmen. Today was different in that Read is a proper batsman. The old phrase " a better batsman would have got a nick" when talki9ng of a swinging ball still applies. Patel (Warwick) is no a bad batsman, decided that the way to play was to chance his arm and it worked. There is no nedd for us to exaggerate problems that aren't problems. Lancashire today scored as many for their last 4 wickets as their first 6. It is a trend of the modern game I believe.
Perhaps lower order are getting better with the bat.

Couldn't agree more Geordie. If you don't want problems with either their tail or yours, then score some runs up front and take the problem away.

The Warwickshire `tail`, that the lugubrious Little Bird says we failed to `clean up`, was anchored by their captain and top six batsman Jamie Troughton, who has played six ODIs.
His partner was New Zealand all-rounder Jeetan Patel, who has made 13 Test appearances, including at least one this winter, played in 39 ODIs and has a top score of 120 on the self same Edgbaston ground three seasons ago.

If we'd been 106/9 and, say, Jos had gone on to make 100+ while Steve K helped add 60 for the last wicket, how many people here would be saying how bad our opp were at bowling out the tail rather than giving credit to J&S?
And what specific skills are required to bowl well at the tail, which don't help against the better batsmen at the top?

Our problem wasn't the tail, it was Chris Read, a player who career averages 47 in the county chamionship.
We should be praising our injury hit attack and nothing else. Great to see Pete steping up to the plate when we are on our knees injury wise.

But does it tell the full story?
Was the number eleven exposed for a number of consecutive deliveries or did Read bat so well that we were only getting 1/2 balls per over, therefore unable to build pressure?
Was the number eleven batting to ability or exceeding expectations - maybe you could have a look at his statistics?
Today is Friday, it's a fact but a pretty pointless one.
His career average is 6 I believe. I think he also faced 2 whole overs but then, as you'd expect from Read's class innings, he tended to face the last 2 deliveries of most others.

Its a common trend in modern cricket, no team has rabbits any more (apart from Willoughby), so of course we (and everyone else) struggle to dismiss the tail. Notts in particular are notorious for having a better bottom 5 than top.
Wow!!! There are still far too many negative waves from so many of our posters. There are so many positives from the last 3 days against Warwickshire and the first 2 against Notts. We lose VP and now may be down to 10 batsmen for the rest of this match. Trego came to the plate with the bowling and Arul has done likewise with the bat - regretfully the weather will probably save Notts. However, I have seen nothing yet that can prevent us winning our first ever County Championship!!! Come on everybody - let us send only positive waves to our team!!!

If you add our three games together so far we have shown that we have the players on the day. IT was good to read AG's assessment of Arul's batting. We have had runs from Compton, Kieswetter, Hildreth Buttler Dibble and Trego Philander in difficult circumstances. We have had wickets from Philander, Dockrell Trego Kirby and a chip in from MEschede and Gregory. It bodes well in the longer term. If we have to manage without Marcus it shows we are not a one man team.
We have already shown enough to suggest that we are more than capable of winning the CC, we know we get better as the season progresses, a win over the next two days puts us well and truly in the box seat.
Let's all keep our fingers crossed that the results of the skipper's scan are positive....good luck Marcus.

We've only had 5 chances to 'bowl their tail out' and we've managed that the majority of the time. We have won 50% of the matches we've completed

We have 96 overs . If we score 3 an over that is 288 and leaves us at 360 ish. That would be very good in these circumstances and conditions. A lead of 200 with our 4th innings to come gives us a shout.I'll settle for a first innings lead anyway and see where we go from there.

Good scores can be built when there are two batters able to occupy the crease for the first hour and remain steady. These two have done s superb job to get us into the lead (particularly nice to see Arul in the runs!). Even cameos from James, Trigger, Jos, Craig and Craig, could put us in a really strong position. If the rain gives us enough tome to make anything of it is in the lap of the cricketing gods!

Superb stuff Arul and excellent support from Compo. AGOD talked about acceleration and I was a tad doubtful but a good start to the next session will certainly make the desire to push for quick runs a less risky gamble.

But the repeat of the captain`s ankle injury from last season, plus the likelihood of at least one of our two batsmen-keepers being absent for the plethora of ODIs this summer, raises the possibility of Brian Rose going for a batter as overseas player when Philander`s contract ends.
Countries without Test commitments for the remainder of this summer are Sri Lanka, Australia and Pakistan. So there would be a good choice of batters there, although the various one-day circuses do add a complication.
Another possibility might be a loan player. Here the question is finding anyone better than our young reserve players like Jones (when back from University) and Barrow. A quick glance at county batsmen - currently out of favour with their counties but with some pedigree - might suggest Mark Stoneman (second in Durham`s batting averages last summer and with experience as an opener); Chesney Hughes (a particularly hard-hitting Derbyshire batsman with two championship centuries last summer) and Sam Northeast (perhaps rather over-hyped when at Harrow but an ever present in the Kent batting line-up last summer).
Not particularly eye-catching perhaps, but I would have thought Mark Stoneman might be worth a shout - if Durham agreed to a loan of course.

and so it began......if Buttler hadn't hit Kiesy then we may have been in the Champions league final. In the end we didn't but a great effort. Going forward Kartik wasnt staying so we brought in Roelof and Polly for t20..........looks like a good move. Wait though, Polly forgot he was with WI this summer so we replace him with Gayle whose fallen out with WI. Brian then finds out Roelof cant get in the country so in comes Albie............in the meantime we have signed an unknown Vernon Philander- who? He then becomes the fastest to 50 test wickets, will he come or will he not, will he get an IPL deal? No he comes and SA want to manage how we use him so we need to "rest" him for a couple of games. Brilliant for Arul. In view of Hildreth's own batting problems, Compton for Captain and perhaps vice-Captain in place of missing Alfie? Perhaps I'm being ultra pessimistic, but I think Tres's long term future demands that he gets a proper long term solution, which probably means out for the season? possibly after an operation? Still greater minds than mine will looking at the situation. I feel for his own, and if he wants to play into his forties, now is the time to sort things. IMO!

I am so happy for Arul he has struggled in the run-up to this match, he deserve to have a secure first team place after all the years waiting to get his British citizenship.
And Nick is doing what he does best and that is staying there building a good partnership.

Only real chance of a win is to get most of our runs first dig. Puts a strange pressure on teams if they are in arrears for most of their second dig. Even if it is going well, somewhere in the back of the mind is two or three wickets and we will be struggling.

Youcan only getting batting points up to 110 overs so see where we are then and decide.
Nick Compton has now got almost 600 1st class runs already this season. Is it inconceivable that anyone can get 1000 first class runs by the end of April,let alone the end of May,which was normally the mark of a superb start to a batsmans summer.
Good point Ronnies, we might as well declare at 110 ovs, a 200 run lead with the odd shower rules out one result option!!
I spoke to Andre Adams at lunch and they are expecting quite a bit of rain tomorrow. If we are lucky we may get heavily overcast skies, but not much wet stuff.
The attacking side of James's game seems in good order.
I think we'll need some weather related help tomorrow in terms of cloud to produce swing because the pitch is slow and only the odd ball is seaming.

Tend to think a really ruthless skipper would have declared at 400. James will get plenty more 100s.
Nick Compton will have a maximum of 10 innings after today to become the first player to score 1,000 runs before the end of May since Graeme Hick managed it on 28 May 24 years ago.
As the last time I looked he had 647, I don`t think you would get very favourable odds from a bookie.
Incidentally, Compton has already passed Hick`s record of 410 runs in April, but he did start rather earlier on March 31, compared with Graeme`s April 17.

Brilliant day at the office today, esp the last couple hours. Got our points in the bag, stopped Notts getting any (110 overs are up) and batsmen in form. Will be tough to bowl them out, even if weather allows, but we've got to be in good heart after this. I'm sure somebody will still find something to moan about, but I'm happy.
PS Tres would presumably remain captain for this game, even if he's gone in the fetlock, in the dressing room at least over stuff like declarations and plotting the strategy.

I have always liked Compo.
I do think sometimes he could rotate strike a bit better, but i have not criticised him for being too slow.
Most criticise when we are bowled out cheaply playing shots so can't have it both ways.

Well I've seen another welcome side of him in this game because I have thought of him as a player with one gear. Today he's done something more.
If the majority have always liked him on here, they kept it very close to their chests in his first season and a half though he has certainly brought them out into the open in the last few games. Very very good start to a season.
Have to also hope that this has pushed Arul and James especially to the extra level we all know they have. Now if we get Jos firing as well.......... Marcus can probably have a few days off to rest his injury.

At one point this afternoon - I think it was just after Compton got his first 100, Parick Kidd tweeted that in this bowler-friendly start to the season Nick had faced the most balls in the County Championship - 900.
The next highest was 447.
If that doesn't reinforce what he's done in all three matches so far I don't know what does.

A great knock from Compton. Having watched him play through a testing Gurney spell yesterday afternoon and let Arul score the runs through the covers, Compo unleasehed this evening. Reverese sweeps, straight punches for six off Patel, pulls for six off Gurney. He must have been seeing it like a football.

Compton isa very correct batsman, who because of his correctness often hits a fielder. I would think his proprtion of boundaries is fairly low but he seems to have worked out that 3 twos an over is quick.

Interesting to read about George Dobell's contempt for the fitness levels of Notts.
For my lunch, in the excellent Larwood and Voce kitchen, I had a fish platter, washed down with the local ale.
Lunching next to me were Andre Adams, Mike Newell and some other Notts player.
Both players had a colossal steak sandwich with dripping-fried chips. The Sam Allardyce/Arsene Wenger approach to spirts science, this was not. The coach also had dripping fried chips, in his case with battered cod. Of course none of those men were playing in this match, but still..
The previous night, Big Ben, James Tsylor and two others came in for cakes when play was abandoned. For anyone lucky enough to be going today, may I suggest the lemon cake?
I agree with George D that we treated their bowling with disdain. I'm not sure that I would say that their bowling was all that bad, though, more a function of a peach of a batting surface.
Harry Gurney looks like a man who would be a fine bowler in Madras in the 70s or Perth in the 80s, but he will certainly need to bowl a far fuller length on soft early season tracks! He bowled short so often that I think it must have been intentional as opposed to radar malfunction. He did have the ability to trouble Compton with some bounce though.

If the England selectors are looking for fresh blood in the wake of disappointing batting performances last winter, they could do worse than consider NC. He has an excellent technique and temperament, a first-class average of 40 and has made three 200s in the past year. He's a good fielder too.
Already been mooted here. But as you all know CC1 form is not something they take into account. Present First class average of 133 is not something to be sneezed at though.

Simon Hughes, writing in Wisden claims that the single biggest thing that Andy Flower has brought to the table was the following key insight; That stats actually show that the majority of 'daddy hundreds,' show no acceleration at all. Apparently the same stats show that players who increase their scoring rate when they get past 100 usually fail to go past 130.
Apparently, England batsmen are under orders to bat at the same pace throughout their innings; to stay in their comfort zone. There isn't a prescribed pace; it depends on natural style of the player BUT the batsmen are under orders to bat at the same rate, throughout. Apparently the results, in terms of double tons, show a huge percentage increase. I think the figure was more double tons under Flower, than in the previous decade!

I think the intended point was not that it was bringing the stat to the table, but rather the interpretation of the stat and consequent change in team batting strategy. And, of course, the results of that strategy. It used to be the case that other teams scored daddy hundreds much more frequently than England, apparently, and now the boot is on the other foot.
I don't mean that England used to necessarily have lots of daddy hundreds scored in matches against them, just that a number of other Test teams would make more of them over any given period of time.

Lewis Gregory, in the brief spell I saw of him, looks like he is some way from where he would need to be with the ball perhaps he is still feeling his way back from the injury?

One would hope Phillander would play!!! So, Trego, Meschede, and GD would make up a four, leaving us one bowling place to fill. Lewis and Arul can presumably provide some support. Aside from Max, who else is in line ? Not that I'm saying Max shouldn't play ;-)

The Tres injury will have been equivalent to one over of time. Possibly even about 1.5. So it might be that that will be taken into consideration after the fact?

Yeah, but you need a clear weather window to be able to think that way. If you know it's going to be dry you can plan to go 'at,' Notts for so long, then call the dogs off and stick the spinners on at a point where you no longer think you can win.
Gregory, rather than Suppiah, has replaced Meschede now - inplies to me they're not so worried about any points deduction.

Could be a b**ger if you are planning to catch up on your run rate and it rains. Presumably you can't use a declaration to ensure a side gets penalised for run rate ?

That's a very good question.
I would guess that the answer would be the same as for denying an opponent bonus points - you cannot declare specifically so that your opponent loses points for a poor over-rate.
Obviously if you are declaring to help your own team win the game then that would be fine.

It was pointed out a few weeks ago that our seam bowling resources were thin. It's still April and we're seeing the consequences.
Kirby.Philander and especially Trego have performed well but in today's packed schedule you need rotation of at least 5 established specialist seamers - that's before all rounders like Gregory and Meschede and Trego.

So the present problem is? Philander returning so the massive crisis is less of a massive crisis.

If you look at Surrey they have the following squad of Seamers.
Tremlett
Dernbach
Lewis
Meaker
Linley
All pretty established performers. I would argue you take any three from those add an allrounder and a spinner and you have a decent bowling lineup.

One of those, KT is all but certain to be on ODI duty. Another (Meaker) may join Dernbach.

Perversely, although it does create some problems the unfortunate run of injuries does enable the young talent to be 'properly tested' in real important match situations. As a long term advocate of giving the youngsters opportunities to prove to us AND THEMSELVES whether they have 'what it takes' to survive until real pressure, I see the current problems as ways for the management to make some initial but eventually longer term decisions on individuals merits.
