A right Royal Ending to home T20

No Trego again

By Grockle et al
July 1 2012

A pretty dismal performance against Gloucestershire on Friday gave us the first T20 defeat of the short format campaign and it looks like the same team will get the chance to rectify that against Worcestershire in the last T20 of the season (unless we get a home quarter) this afternoon. The sun is out but the sky is mostly grey and Pete Trego is once more named as 12th man.  No sign of him with the ball in the warm ups.

v WORCESTERSHIRE FPT20 @ Taunton Sunday 1 July 2012

Scorecard

Commentary

The same side seems to be preferred for this last home match.  The scorecard suggests the side will be;

Levi, Compton, O'Brien, Buttler, Morkel, Hildreth, Suppiah, Gregory, Thomas, Dockrell, Kirby

Pete Trego is named as twelfth man.

The game will probably get going on time, presently there is negotiation going on as to whether the SKY camera men can have first dibs on the press box food because they have to work at 2:00 when it usually arrives... lots of sympathy being shown to their plight as you can probably imagine.

For those lamenting the absence of Peter T from the side, I'm afraid he is very very likely to be out of this one as well.  Max is still suffering from his side strain and it looks like we'll see the same eleven as Friday.  Windy and semi-sunny but it does look like the rain will stay away.....

Somerset won the toss and have decided to bowl this time.  The side is as posted above.

A good crowd are present to watch Alfonso try the ploy of opening with George from the River, although the first legside delivery is missed by Moeen, the next three head for the boundary as slow long hops are belted over ropes and 2 more mean that we see the opposition start the second over from Kirby 14 runs to the good.  Steve fires in a few more significant balls to Solanki but the Worcestershire openers are given a fairly leisurely start by our guys though Moeen nearly chops on the 6th delivery 21 after 2 overs.

Alf (who, as people have commented, has not had the most distinguished set of games ever this season) takes the third over.  The Pears add 6.

By 5 overs we've tried Lewis as well but no wickets and Worcs are 48 for no wicket, the 50 arrives with the 4th ball of the 6th over. Kevin O'Brien is introduced in the 7th and is murdered for 15 so the skipper re-introduces George who has Moeen stumped for an excellent 47 at 73.  Presently the fielding veers from excellent infield stuff to woeful and Jos looks distinctly rsuty behind the stumps.  Lewis takes the 9th with George remaining on for the 10th and at the halfway stage the visitors have 88 and look solid and confident.

Dockrell strikes again in the 12th when Solanki is caught by James Hildreth for a run a ball 33 at 94.  This introduces Gareth Andrew and the 'Mongoose' and Dockers finishes with 2 for 34. O'Brien takes the 13th and does not impress, Suppiah is introduced for the 14th and also gets nowhere.  It takes Kirby to come back on for the 15th for the next man to go as Gareth is caught by Nick Compton at a score of 127.  The 150 arrives at the end of the 16th and we see Somerset sticking to the work as James Hildreth pulls off a brilliant direct hit to remove Cameron, coming in from the Gimblett, he fires at the keeper's end fromoutside the circle and takes out the middle stump with the Worcestershire man struggling to make his ground.  153 for 4 becomes 157 at the start of the 18th.  That score sees the end of Hughes as he hits his own wicket at the start of Kirbs' 19th over.  There are another 3 runs in the over before he also sends Mitchell back LBW at 160.

Somerset then get fined for a slow over rate and 6 more runs go on the visitors score!!  How can you do that with 2 spinners in your side?  169 for 6 after 1 ball of the 20th from Alf - poor cricket I'm afraid.  It becomes 171 for 7 4 balls in as Scott moves to leg and thick edges a ball straight into the hands of George. The last two balls give two more runs and a 173 total - Jos may have had a run out chance at the end but couldn't hold on to the rising ball.  Not a great performance but a fair attempt to pull the game back in the second half - the penalty runs didn't help even though we kept the Pears down to two boundaries in the last 5 overs.  Not impressed I have to say but it can be reached!!  If we lose by 6 runs though!!  If this is a run chase you'll have to follow the last half hour on yer own because I am still at the whim of public transport.

Excellent comeback over from Steve Kirby who finished with 3 for 37.

The Reply

Lucas starts the Worcestershire bowling proceedings against Somerset's Richard Levi who surprises everyone by NOT trying to hit the first ball out of the ground!!  Compo looks to drive his first ball, completely misses it, fools the keeper and the ball runs for 4.  The second one he tries to drive, completely misses and sees his bails drop to the ground!!  O'Brien is in with 7 on the board and that is how it stands as Shantry marches up to take over 2.

16 to the home side after 2 but only half of them off the bat after Shantry's second ball goes for 4 wides.  Levi is now getting into 'smash it' mode but is not connecting and O'Brien has yet to impress me with his batting I'm afraid but we need a solid start if our line-up is to hold it's own in this game.  Only 1 off the third over from Lucas does not help us get into this game.  Gareth is on for the fourth from the River.

Richard looks to go after Andrew but can't connect with enough of them, he does get one over the infield but he does pick a couple from Shantry including a wonderful chipped six over the temporary stand on the Caddyshack side to rack the Somerset score up to 35.  That upsets Shantry's rhythm and he tries to keep it away from the batsman with wides.  When he does get it to Levi he goes for another four and a straight six over the Old Pavilion.  46 for 1 after 5 with 21 off the over and putting them 2 behind the D/L as the rain starts to drizzle.

Andrew is also conscious of this man's capability and another wide ball is notched up as they try and keep the ball away from our Richard.  That extra brings up the 50 and Gareth does a decent job of keeping us to 51 after 6. Two balls later and the Levi show is over as he is easily caught by Moeen on the Ondaatje boundary going for another big one.  Jos comes out to join the very quiet Kevin.  Only 55 after 7 and we are going to have to look for another gear - but it isn't going to be Mr Buttler who is bowled by Moeen's slow one with his first ball of the 8th.  In comes Albie Morkel with a job to do (£4000 an innings is the sum being bandied about here for the international/kolpak players) and some money to earn.  Unfortunately neither Somerset man seems to be able to get it off the cut piece with any kind of regularity.  59 after 8 is not going to get us this game I'm afraid.

It becomes harder and harder as the most awful of Shantry slow balls is popped back to him by an inept shot from Morkel!!  The ball was so slow the man should have had ample time to NOT play the shot he did.  But that was not to be and it is 62 for 4 after 9.  That is me done for this game.  I'll predict ahead that we will not win this one unless James takes them to the cleaners!!  Kevin is not the man to take this game by the scruff but he may be in enough to support someone who does, however the bottom edge he has just played to Moeen suggests he may not be long for this world either.  After 10 we have 72 so we need 102 and James was VERY close to cliping that into the cover fielder's hands.

Still not convinced this is ours and as O'Brien skies one to the boundary fielder (Cameron) in front of the Caddyshack it looks even less probable.  72 for 5 and Arul to the crease - oh dear!!

Sounds like a slow and tricky pitch according to Radio WMidlands.

And that being the case, it also sounds as though Worcestershire have been able to score rather too freely, so will probably take a really good batting effort to win this.

Sounds like good comeback in the final few overs... but we've messed up the over-rate, so maybe not.

Looks like another comprehensive defeat, at this rate, and with Jos out.

At least we can look forward (soon) to getting on with the proper cricket.

I've had enough and went home at 100-7 with about 3 overs left.

This is not just the last two games. James papered over same things against Glamorgan.

Appears no team spirit compared with the opposition in the last THREE games. Selection is not being based on form but on reputation and lumps of cash paid out and not wishing to see it sat on benches as reserves! O'Brien is clearly not as good as at least 3/4 of our youngsters, so, why did Brian buy him?
Did George have an influence?. Alf is only in because he was made vice-Captain. If we qualify now it will be more by luck than judgement!

The only winners in this mess appear to be Pete and Max!

Yes old boy. Obrien must be released and trego and meschede must play from now on as will max when he's fit. Levi and morkel presumably will play as they are highly paid but I don't agree with it. Our bowling is weak and 2 wins over a poor north ants does not a team make. We have been drivel in one dayers all season so mr hurry and mr rose have some questions to answer in all of this. Only good part of the season for me was when the young overtons were playing in the championship. Apart from that the season has been a total disappointment.

As the season has progressed, the management have alot to answer for...with Tres injured and Hildy captain the side looked and felt one unit.I am afraid since the 'Great'Alfonso returned, there is no team spirit, its flat, there is a feeling of emptiness.Trego should be playing, we should be asking for a refund from O'Brien if the £4000 quoted is indeed a fact.It seems alot to me and may not be the case.To my mind, money will not buy you a team.A team needs to be built from firm foundations and at present we are about to topple over.

I am home after another disappointing performance by the team.

We have lost two badly and we won two of the matches thanks to a single batsman in each match.

We are still top and can still qualify if we win the last two away matches and get an home draw.

Apart from the team’s effort in the last two matches the club must be pleased with the supporter coming to watch, there must have been another 7000+ today.

I suspect we got the toss decision wrong again?

Opting to chase on a slow track? Seldom a great plan?

Was different the other night because of the bad weather around at the start of the game, meaning bowling would have made sense at the start.

Based on what the Radio WM guys said, it sounded like it was another ordinary fielding display as well?

Even when we won easily at Northants, we were really ordinary in the field.

I've been watching Somerset and Exeter City for 50 years now, so I have seen my fair share of dire performances and am not easily shocked. This weekend is right up there with the very worst.

I thought Somerset were prudent and their financial position secure...if what BR says is correct, it surely means the club has taken unnecessary risk in trying to ensure Champions League qualification by financing under performing, overpaid mercenaries and leaving out contracted, talented, wholehearted players who should be playing in the team.It seems the club learnt nothing from the Champions League performance last year when our youngsters performed so well. They were a team full of commitment, determination, purpose and unified. The management of Somerset CCC are leaving themselves open to some very searching questions should they not qualify for this years tournamnent.

O be fair the last 2 years our overseas have been good. The team selection this year though has been shocking and how the hell Thomas allowed 6 penalty runs to happen us beyond me. He is not impressing. 2 of the younger ones who did well last year max and dibble are injured so I suppose we are snookered from that perspective. Marcus has tweeted that form is temporary but we need these SA boys to get the finger out or they may be going home with a lot less than they thought they would. Hopefully one win out of two will get us in and we can just go fot it then.

If what you say is true, and Brian has budgeted based on qualifying or there are serious financial implications, then he and Andy Nash will have to seriously consider their positions by appearing to have mortgaged the club's future. That is, of course, if what you report is accurate.

If it is even only partly true, there WILL BE some very serious questions for next year's AGM IMO.

I have just read the report in the SCCC website, so it confirms the expression "serious financial implications".

To me that means we will need VERY VERY detailed explanations from the CEO, Brian and The Chairman. Surely there should NEVER be a situation where losing two or three games can have in their words "SERIOUS FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS". That means to me that there may not be enough money in the kitty to KEEP our young stars if the big boys, with big money, come shopping this autumn!

Our claim to fame was and has been PRUDENCE!. Hopefully it will kill off any ideas of bidding for second class internationals!!

I don’t understand that statement by Brian Rose, this year our income from this years matches must be a lot more than last year even though there are less match this season, four of the eight last year was rained-off.

Last years finances didn’t include the t20 tournament winnings and if we don’t get to finals day (I still think we will) that will be the only differance in income from last year.

Edit - If we can manage still to get an home draw Quarter-final that will be a plus on last year where it was an away match.

I said last year on here if they can't bat on a slow wicket in a one day game then they will get found out, and now even their home wickets are slow. It calls into question the batsmen, the coaches but also the tactic of packing the top order with big hitters, three of them hirelings, a lack of tactical nous.

Even if they got through to the t20 final you know that after 80 overs the wicket will be slow and turning, then what? Another disappointment to some part-time spinner or actually picking a batting line up that can deal with it?

I still think it is partly mental, this weekend was built up to be crucial period with a packed ground and the team put in two abject performances with only Gregory coming out of it with any credit on both days. Good to see him fit.

Also, I wonder if the IPL is actually quite a different game from the t20 beyond the obvious similarities. So players that shine in it don't necessarily dominate in England. Playing on a cold wet summer night in blighty may be a lot different from a hot, placid pitched evening in Kolkota?

Ahh well, the proper stuff returns soon. Still hope there.

I know that, unlike the England selectors, some posters here don`t rate Craig Kieswetter. But I feel we have missed his presence at the top of our T20 order - and behind the wicket.

He had shown that priceless ability to score rapidly during the power play through his quality stroke play, while at the same time somehow playing each ball on its merit. Now, with
Marcus also missing, we have too many wallop merchants at the top of the order, but not enough class.

Possibilities for the two crucial matches upcoming? Partner Levi with Arul or Hildy, with instructions to still be there around about overs 15-20.

As a supporter who has been coming to Taunton for 57 years, and with a journey time to Taunton now taking 3 hours each way, I was infuriated to be told by a steward that I was disloyal when I left the ground at 5.00pm last night to catch an earlier train home. However, I stopped and chatted with him, missed my train, but received some very revealing information which he claims to have received from an employee of SCCC.
He claims our problems are all due to "Divisions" !!!e.g.

There are divisions at the very top of SCCC about the future strategy of the club

There are serious divisions amongst the players about the criteria for team selection

There are divisions within the team of the below average mercenaries that we have signed

There are divisions within the team about the development of our younger players

There are divisions within the team about the captaincy, or lack of it !!!

There are divisions in the team about the change to coaching sessions, with more and more emphasis being placed on fitness and not cricketing skill sets

There are divisions within the Commercial operations of the club.

If one looks at the C40 results, coupled with an accurate assessment of team performance during the T20's this year, there has to be a fair amount of credibility in the information that I received last night. Yes I missed my train to Basingstoke !!

Very ironic, Cary Castle, that the steward accused you of 'disloyalty,' and then promptly trotted out that vial of venom.

However one thing I will say is that fielding is usually held to be a barometer of morale and SCCC have not looked much of a fielding side in this year's T20.

Then again, two of the hired hands are just not great fielders full stop (Levi and O'Brien) so they do not help on that score.

Yes I too was very surprised at being called disloyal, and then listening to his remarks.

However, I do think that they have some credence, and yes I totally agree that our fielding performances have been well below our usual standards, and as for leadership from the Captain, best I do not comment.

However, I expect the same side will be selected for both Friday and Sunday as I cannot see any of the three mercenaries being rested/dropped in favour of PT or the Overtons

Having looked at all remaining fixtures in each group one more win would guarantee us at least one of the third places.
Two wins should guarantee a home draw still.

Snap! On top of that on Friday Glouces ordered the Heavy roller between innings and that clearly flattened the wicket, so why did we only use the lightest handroller yesterday? (based on the assumption that the team batting second chooses the weight of roller)

AGod
02/07/2012 09:38
Heavy rollers tend to deaden pitches. That's what Phil Frost always said. Given that yeseterday's problem was a slow pitch, I would assume a heavy roller would simply have made it even more dead?

I think nelliec is absolutely right that we made a major cock-up at the toss in both of these defeats. Does Alf make those decisions on his own? Are Rose and/or Hurry also involved?

Nevertheless, and irrespective of the toss, to then not even be competitive in either game is really rather poor, to say the least.

As for the steward's comments?

Various thoughts spring to mind;

1) The fact that his opening gambit was to accuse a stranger of disloyalty, then I would imagine that said steward is a natural stirrer of excrement.

2) I don't think I have ever worked anywhere where there was universal agreement on either overall direction or (certain) specific decisions. And yet that does not mean that morale was necessarily low. I've always thought that it is dangerous to have a situation where everyone agrees (usually means some are not thinking for themselves.)

3) It's very easy to believe that some people are not happy with selection ... namely those currently not in the starting XI. As a club we should surely not want any player who would be perfectly content to not be playing in the first XI?

4) Not sure that 'divisions about the development of the younger players,' makes all that much sense. Brian has opted (or been forced) to go with a squad in which all of the reserves, pretty much, are young and inexperienced. With some senior players out, there has been no option other than to field younger players. The strategy of having no experienced reserves in the squad could certainly be questioned but - outside of this wretched T20 competition - I'm not sure what more Brian could have done to develop these younger players... especially as the second XI programme is patchy?

Just to muddy the water, on Friday the umpires signalled to the ground staff what size of roller to use between the innings. But surely they must have been conveying Glo`shire`s choice.

AGod

Perhaps any muddy waters should be unmuddied and the law of the roller for one-day cricket should be standardized as with first-class cricket.

Mike TA1
02/07/2012 10:05
To be frank about this for a one day match if the heavy roller was used enough in the preparation of a one day pitch it shouldn’t be needed during the match.

The heavy roller firms up the surface so the ball bounces more off the pitch the result being the ball will come on to the bat more making it easier to bat.

Who these day’s is making that decision?

A good read. [www.pitchcare.com]

AGod
02/07/2012 10:15
oh, okay, sorry, Mike.

So it may have helped if we'd used the heavy one.

Was the pitch cracked at all? If so, they might have been worried about opening up more cracks with a heavy roller?

Mike TA1
02/07/2012 10:21
No need to apologise AG, we all have our opinion on the subject, my opinion doesn’t make mine correct and yours wrong.

That is why in county match most of the time the heavy roller was used between innings to make it easier to bat on for a while for the team batting second.

I suspect it's deliberate hyperbole by Rose, designed to give everyone a bit of a kick up the derriere... hence the mention not only of financial implications for the club, but also "for the players."

Thanks AF - believe it or not I have no wish for Brian to go - ONLY some clearer public information about WHY he considers it serious. The 'mortaging' bit is aimed at the amount of money which, persumably Andy Nash and co still intend to spend chasing "perceived" vast profits from second class ODIs.

Surely the news from Bristol (they are allowed to re-develop) ends any realistic chance of Taunton getting ODIs whether Nash & Co want to admit it, or not?

Just in case any of you missed it. Steve Kirby is bowling really well in the T20 and the direct hit fielding of James Hildreth to remove Mitchell(I think) was nothing short of stupendous.

So the whole world hasn't actually come to and end and we still have some players with talent.

Having said that I too left early one both weekend games (enforced but the result was already certain). Not particularly impressed with Morkel or O'Brien and Levi is only of use when the long handle approach works.

The bowling seems almost totally ineffectual.

Alf looks a little more dangerous at the end of an innings than the front but not by much.

The in swinging yorker that Lewis had so usefully developed last season is totally absent from his arsenal now - along therefore with any venom.

O'Brien turns his arm over and so does Albie when he can... I'd rather see Meschede steaming in and Waller fooling people.

George floats between excellent and boundary fodder

Steve Kirby has been a revelation - yorkers, slow balls and variations of angle.

Batting wise - unless we hit a purple patch at the start we are in trouble until James arrives and then he copes as long as others can stay with him. Jos struggles against any form of slow ball and really ought to come in ahaed of both Kevin and Albie

We are missing Pete with bat if not with ball

But still in for a quarter-final so, as I say, the world hasn't actually ended yet.

But the point is, we could and should already be home and dry with the amount of money spent on the mercenaries and we are a long way off at present...I would not be making such a condemnation if our home grown lads were at this stage finding it a bit of a struggle, but if you take a very high fee to appear, you must produce. It is patently clear, at this point, that the high fee earners are not justifying their earnings while our youngsters are sat on the sidelines wondering what the heck is going on!!

02/07/2012 14:38
Not sure that is true of Levi Just In - though it is "Wham bam" or not.

Morkel is unfit and O'Brien well can't argue there.

However, they are 3 out of eleven. They don't explain the poor form of Alf, Lewis, Jos

They cannot be held responsible for the loss of Max via a side strain or Craig via England call ups.

They are supposed to be the icing on the strong Somerset cake not the foundations of the whole T20 tournament and up for blame for every facet of every poor performance we have surely.

Why not condemn the poor performances of the rest of the team? Why should 3 internationals affect that at all? If we are poor we are poor as a team aren't we?

writing from the perspective of someone who has never played cricket, but loves the game, and played team sports at a semi professional level. It is obvious to me that there has been a catastrophic failure of team moral. aka team spirit.

I was a member of an average team who won trophies over the top of more technically gifted teams by virtue of an indomitable spirit and a will to fight to the end.
If you need and example look at the team who won the 20/20 final last year. At best they were an average side who overcame their opposition with a team spirit that exceeded Somersets arguably superior technical ability.
Why did Somerset change the batting order in the final, surely they weren't frightened of Leicester? Was it a sudden loss of confidence! Poor management more like.

So why has there now been another collapse of the fabled team spirit and confidence?

In my ignorance may I suggest that team selection be one cause.
A lack of confidence in the coach and management team in general another, and the inclusion of what to my uneducated cricketing eye, a trio of over paid and over here mediocre talent from distant shores. In the case of two of them any way!
Distant shores I mean!

I understand that the coach Mr Hurry has no experience of first class cricket as a player. Perhaps what the club needs is a coach who can help the players with perceived
technical deficiencies, I.e. batting on a slow wicket. (Some one please explain!) Maybe that will help!

All in all sad situation not helped by strange postings on the web site about serious financial implications!
Are we to believe that this great club needs to play 20/20 cricket in India, every season, to survive at the top?

Surely not?

Re the highly-paid overseas players issue, presumably other counties are playing their overseas players similarly high, or higher, sums - eg Glos with Murali, Glam, with North, Marsh, Northants with Vaas, etc.. By definition, not all of these will win their clubs all of their games - some will be successes, some won't.

To date, I'd say that Levi has been a success, Morkel maybe not - and in previous recent years the likes of Murali, Pollard and van der Merwe have been successes. I don't think Somerset's record in this respect is worse than other counties'.

Interesting, if somewhat depressing debate on this thread & I have to say I find CC1's comments of 5.42 somewhat concerning.

Acknowledging the risk that the steward was exaggerating, some of the 'divisions' referred do not - regrettably - appear at odds with our performances.

Strange how we view ourselves as being miles ahead of Gloucs (& I guess we currently are), yet they over-performed for years, winning a bucket load of trophies in the late '90's/early 2000's.

Compare & contrast...............

Can't help wondering whether we would be better off without Alf & with Pete or James as Captain.

I'm there with you Grizzly!. Alf have been a wonderful signing, and one can understand why the powers that be wish to give him every chance. BUT (and why shouldn't he) he has indicated by actions rather than words that glory via the IPL is greater glory than for Somerset. It surely must have been silly to give him the vice captaincy AGAIN when he was likely to be missing two months of the season. Even if he is dropped from the IPL next season, I think that James or Pete should given that role. Then we may get back the Alfonso who has been such a big part of the success over the last few years.

James has had one innings this year and that's it. Don't see how he holds it together. I'd rather he had half a dozen 50s than nothing and one century brilliant as it may have been. Grizzly I agree I'd make trego the captain so there you go. That's the way I see it. 6 penalty runs burnt Alfa bridges and he needs to concentrate on bowling better.

As far as I am concerned you have hit the most important nail directly on the head. We do have a captaincy problem full stop.
I was at Fridays and Sundays games and found the decisions to bat first on Friday and second on Sunday astonishing.

I did not at any stage notice the captain rallying his troops, and nor do I think that he was leading by example. I also found it extremely odd that on Sunday the captain spent part of the time fielding on the boundary. Also with both George and Arul having bowled, how on earth did Alf allow us to suffer a 6 run penalty because we failed to bowl our 20 overs in the allotted time ?

I have had my moan, I have listened to a Steward having his moan, but as Grockle rightly states, all is far from lost, so lets keep supporting the team, but boy oh boy do they need to show some improvement in Fielding, Batting and Bowling

Yes, there is absolutely a lot to be positive about. Let's face it, the young talent we have is almost indecent.

I think where we risk 'gone wrong', if those words are not too harsh, is in how we implement & get the best out of that talent.

The situation isn't helped with injuries, international calls & a hideously disjointed fixture list, (albeit those are factors that every County must endure).

The key questions for me are selection policy, Captaincy team spirit & cohesion. (If we can get those minor factors right, then we'll be top of the tree in no time !).

Re the Captaincy, - if James really wanted to give up the role I find that surprising & disappointing. If he didn't want to give it up then I think we made the wrong choice in handing it over anyway.

I'm also not knocking Alf. He has performed superbly for us in the past (unfortunately 'past' seems rather a key word given his recent modest contributions).

I just don't think that it can help team building, continuity, or perhaps even morale, for someone to be parachuted in from a high earning jamboree in the sub-continent (or anywhere else come to that), and risk jeopardising the motivation that we had been building up to that point.

Whatever the outcome of our Championship & one day efforts this season, I think there must be a 'drains up' on our future strategy re overseas players. Frankly, if we can't get a long term commitment, (accepting the difficulties in doing so),then I would prefer us not to bother at all.

He went for over 9 an over last night ( and got three wickets of which 2 were meaningless )
Compare that with the economy of the opposition bowlers.
Kirby is a committed trier full of effort but other than very occassionally he is not a good t20 bowler and if you think otherwise look at his t20 career stats.
Having said that he is no worse than out other poor t20 bowlers.

These are not minor issues, they are one major cause of the problems in my opinion!!they are all inter linked and integral to each other.I have said before..where does the tag 'Great' Alfonso come from? I can think of many adjectives to precede his name but great certainly would not be one of them. His captaincy has been dismal. He is not a rallying motivational sort of character and is not leading by example...so what are his credentials for captaincy? Anyone care to explain?Trego, for sure would lead by example and I am sure would have plenty to say...if Hildy doesn't want it, Trego is the man.The other matters to which you refer are a reflection of the management...again just my opinion but backed up by other comments on here...it has become tired, lacking in judgement and in communication skills. If communication is poor to the supporters, who is to say it any better to the players?I could go on but patently, things are not right at the top and that will for sure filter down to the players.

In the hope that the Steward who called me disloyal for leaving the ground at 5.05pm on Sunday reads our forums, I thought he might like to see the timings of the trains that I catch to support Somerset for the LVCC matches and T20 matches, as I am still infuriated by his remark.

LVCC

7.22am Basingstoke to Salisbury
8.30am Salisbury to Westbury
9.25am Westbury Castle Cary
10.29 Castle Cary to Taunton arriving 10.53 !!!

T20 Sundays
11.10 Basingstoke to Salisbury
12.27 Salisbury to Westbury
13.06 Westbury to Taunton arriving 13.44

I will not tell you the cost in case my wife looks at the forum, but as you will be able to see my travelling times to and from the match are mainly greater than the hours of cricket that I am able to watch.

Hardly disloyal, as I regularly come down twice a week during the season.

Also, I could much more easily travel to, Kia Oval, Lords, Ageas Bowl, Hove and maybe Bristol, but I am Somerset through and through and have supported the side for 57 years.

That's very impressive dedication, CC. Do you dare to risk telling us the time of the return trains?

I'd give you the use of one of my Pegasus flats if it wasn't for the disruption caused by Mr Archer's incessant partying.

Some years ago my wife advanced an argument for not moving to Taunton along the lines of the fact that she wouldn't see anything of me (though why she would want to see anything or whether there is anything to see after nearly four decades was not discusbsed). The illogicality of that argument, as so well presented by you, is that your wife must see much less of you on cricket days than if you lived where Mike does and went to every single day of every match. You'd also be rather better off.

In my dotage I accept I have so much more in my life than Somerset cricket, even if it is one of its most important aspects, that I would miss a huge amount were I to move to Taunton, even though having a nice little pied a terre close to the ground would be very agreeable.

During this season's games AND in relation to the rest of his compadres he has come on a hell of a lot. You don't agree? Well I can't say I'm surprised but he is now a bowler we can trust to do something in the game rather than a medium fast man who might hit his straps or not.

Wickets are meaningless are they in 20 over match when you bat second? Don't actually agree with that. Any wickets, especially in the final overs of the game (the 2 came in the 19th) are very important because they break up the rhythm and give the batsmen something to get hold of and use to come out fighting at the start of the second innings.

From where he started in this format he is a revelation, he's obviiously worked hard at this format (but you don't have to give him credit as you seem to be working on the figures and not the games watched). He is our only bowler looking dangerous in this format.

Anyway it's an opinion. He's impressed me this T20 and there aren't that many who have.

Steve Kirby’ stats for last year and this year, it is hard to do a straight comparison with last year because there were more games.

2011 33.1 overs 8 wickets Ave. 34.12 Econ 8.23.

That looks a lot better this year.

Can't help but think that the unsetled nature of the side due to all of the international commitments with Ireland/SA/England haven't helped our cause here. You really want a consistent heart of the side who know what their job is. The odd player or two missing a game and being replaced in a like for like way might work, but messing about with the top order may have cost us maybe?
