A second attempt at a thread for the CB40 game. The arrival of Abdur Rehman after the joys of getting a late UK visa occurs at the same time we spend nearly a week playing Nottinghamshire at a vital part of the season in both the four and the one day game. The Pakistani international is certianly a welcome addition as George Dockrell and The Overton's head for Australia while Meschede and Waller deal with injuries.

What can we say about this game? 23.5 overs in the first two rain soaked days. A pretty lethargic Notts batting on the third day with little desire to go for anything particular. Bowled out for 156 courtesy of four wickets from Gemaal Hussain and Rehman's first for the club gave us a sniff but Marcus going early and others going regularly suggested little chance of anything.
With Hildreth and Rehman finishing off Day 3 there was the possibility of looking for a quick 250 and then have a go at the visitors but it was obvious very early on Day 4 that Alf was not fit and bowling them out quickly was a tall order. We tried to reach 250 and another batting point. A good tail end innings of 27 by Hussain got us close but a mistake in turning down a second run at 249 and then being the lastman out meant it was not to be.
Notts played the second innings like the first and the game petered out to the inevitable draw. 7 points to Somerset and 6 to Notts. Warwickshire won - it's going to be hard to overhaul them from here.
V NOTTINGHAMSHIRE CB40 @ Taunton Sunday 12 August 2012
With Nick Compton suffering from back spasms, Alfonso nursing a hamstring tweak, Craig Meschede with a finger injury and Max out with something or other we are looking to our new resources to make an impression in this 40 over game.
Abdur Rehman mskes his one day debut along with Jack Leach who joins the side as his slow ball partner. Craig Kieswetter returns from His Lions game and will keep.
Somerset have won the toss and will field, probably because the weather looks a little changeable at the start of the game and the ball may do a little. However, Rehman starts the bowling from the Old Pavilion End.
He takes the first wicket when Hales tries to reverse sweep him at 19 and you have to make that shot count when you play it!! He doesn't, it hits him full in front and he is on his way for 7.
Unfortunately that is it for the first 10 overs, Jack Leach gets a bowl and is unlucky but the does get 'long handled' a little going for 10. Wessels and Lumb reach the 50 partnership just after collecting 66 in the first quarter of the innings. They are settled and scoring freely by the thirteenth over, although they haven't got away. 85 for 1 is a solid starting score and with wickets in hand and the ball doing very little off the pitch or in the air a very decent score in the high 200's is on the cards.
Gemaal breaks the partnership at 95 in the 15th when Lumb tries to pull him to the Caddyshack but he only puts it into Arul's hands and he departs. Patel replaces him and helps his county over 100 just before the end of the 16th and then Wessels to over 50 in the 17th (50 off 41 balls). However, Rikki isn't there much longer as Abdur fools him and takes out his middle stump halfway through the 18th. 109 for 3. Two new batsmen at the crease and a different game. Rehman has 2 for 11!!
Apologies for the infinite loop that seems to have happenend with the first attempt to put a frontpage on this thread. I have had to delete that and reset the whole thing for the second innings.
Thanks for the info Sloop and apologies to any posts from the first half... all lost I'm afraid.
Great game, really enjoyed it and well done team, just the impetus we want leading up to T 20's Final Day. Now for Tuesday night and Hampshire, and I only have to travel 20 mins for an away match yippee !!!
The only sour note was the score board! The CEO came on to apologise but I'm afraid that the whole episode smells of cheap jacking and incompetence. 3-4000 spectators will have left the ground delighted with the result, but dismayed by the lack of professionalism over a relatively simple bit of IT, which presumably should and could be sorted for a price! At some stage, and it has been going on all season, somebody should be falling on his or her sword!
Trescothick ended the game limping, but reported: “It’s just the extra strain on my foot from batting for so long. It’s my first major innings since the ankle surgery and I’ll be fine.”
Crikey - a personal e-mail from the CEO! Apologies for the scoreboard problems! I haven't complained other than here on Grockle site. Perhaps he has read our comments?? Good bit of PR for him anyway. Lets hope it is sorted very quickly!
Scoreboard is a running joke really.
Even when it works it often has lapses, gives wrong names and figures, but today topped it all.
I know that a petition type thing went around the Trescothick stand at the Glamorgan game, actually complaining that the old scoreboard is to be scrapped leaving us with just the one main scoreboard (it had pages of signatures on it), this i understand was personally delivered to the office for Mr Lavenders attention before play today.
Then as it happens today of all days the one remaining one goes wrong. I guess this may have been the prompt for Mr Lavenders personal PA apology at the ground today, and the following email to those on the mailing list after the game.
As for todays game.
Injury worries first.
Gregory has a side issue, didnt field, bat or bowl.
Trego had a nasty blow on the foot, finished his innings but apparently was seen hobbling badly afterwards, hoping that's just bruising.
Tres was limping a but towards end but he says just the long innings he's not used to, no need to worry!
Rehman was outstanding today, reminded me of Kartiks initial arrival, just has that control and seems to know exactly what he's doing, shame he couldnt be here sooner, if he can get going v Sussex and Surrey in next 2 proper games then we may still have an outside chance.
Great to see Tres back in the runs, chanceless knock, excellently paced as took back seat whilst Crai+Pete were in full flow, held it all together nicely.
If Pete's is anything worse than bruising then denizens of this site that have any bowling ability at all may consider e-mailing Brian Rose as to THEIR availability for T20 Finals Day...
What a good day’s cricket almost perfect the fielding could have been better but it is the end result that counts.
This was the sign of things to come, it was off the very first ball of the match from Abdur a shout for lbw, but I think it was the correct decision the ball looks like it was squeezed between bat and pad.
Jos Buttler gave Steven Mullaney something to think about after hitting him for four.
Abdur Rehman was close to getting Jake Ball out with this ball.
I took three photos of Chris Read’s wicket by Gemaal Hussain and ending up posting this one because of where the bails ended up.
Craig Kieswetter got carried away playing this shot off Andy Carter, he played so well up until this shot.
Andy Carter, this shout for lbw off Gemaal Hussain hitting him on the toe was not given; perhaps it has to hit him on the leg to be given out. (I had better put it is a joke)
One of Abdur Rehman many wickets trapping Alex Hales lbw on the back leg.
Hants match is live on Sky and I believe is a floodlit variety. According to local radio Masceranas must be a doubt. If only it could have been on Wednesday, as I conclude a meeting at 16.30...........
Pete was hit on the shin by a full bodied blow and hopefuly just has a bit of bruising.
Hairy on Tuesday nevertheless
We just have to hope that it's a turning pitch and some of our batsmen who seam a bit can contribute some overs to the campaign as semi-walking wounded
It is a good job it is only a one dayer - no idea what we would have done had we had a four day game next week.
Just because I said I was taking my computer in for servicing (later this morning) that's no excuse for Mr Lavender not to send me an email about the scoreboard.
Loyal of Lhasa. Just because I said I was taking my computer in for servicing (later this morning) that's no excuse for Mr Lavender not to send me an email about the scoreboard.
And I thought you knew EVERYBODY of any impotance!!
Just shows that some folk exaggerate their influence to such a degree, that they sometimes come off the rails. If I didn't know better I'd say you were related to KP!!

Woops - a missing "r"!! Importance Importance i promise you!!
I received a round-robin email from Guy Lavender yesterday evening profusly apologising for the poor scoreboard. Those who haven't received it presumably haven't signed-up to receive news emails from the club.
Are there any plans to remedy the scoreboard situation for next season ?
At the single game I was able to attend this year, the sight of the old scoreboard forlornly covered by a blue tarpaulin was a pretty sad one. The more so as sitting under the new flats, all I could see was the matchbox size board on the front of the Trescothick stand (I think).
What was wrong with the old scoreboard anyway ? (Well, apart from being about three feet lower than it needed to be !).
I take no joy out of saying this but when we were told that the electronic scoreboard was going to be extended and it was to be the main scoreboard I thought the other scoreboard would still going to be used, when I found out the other scoreboard couldn’t be used because I believe it is not compatible with the electronic one once it was extended that was when I could foresee this happening. (You never put all your eggs in one basket).
The electronic scoreboard has already broken down once before when it was not very old, a new part had to be ordered, I can’t remember how long it was out of use at that time.
That is the point that Lavender appears to have taken on board. Anyway his, or somebody else's guts will be garters if it isn't right by tomorrow week, so we are told!!.
I hope the debacle has stopped them going along the lines that seemed popular in the mid season. Leave the electronicone as the main scoreboard and add more 'repeaters'.
The whole reporting of the score live at the ground needs a re-assessment and something effective provided.
As a non-IT expert I would have presumed that the problems revealed with the scoreboard would indicate that something was wrong with the software programme. But no doubt someone will tell me that I know b-gg-r all about it!!
Wasn't it built around the same time as the Colin Atkinson pavillion - I'm guessing around the mid/late 1980's ? I know that's 30+ years ago, but surely some kind of refurb. ought to be possible ?
As CP says, revert to manual operation if needs be - but at least people would be able to see the score.
Life does sometimes seem to be unduly complicated !
"Why would you re-furb an out of date scoreboard ? "
Because there always used to be TWO fully functioning scoreboards, which meant everyone could see the score from anywhere in the ground.
I'm not saying spend stupid money, but surely a basic manual scoreboard would be an option as a fall back in case of situations like the current one ?
Serving as a secondary/back up service, I don't see how it can be out of date. It gives all the key information, which presumably could be updated/corrected as needed by communicating with the scorers ?
The repeaters are supposed to be that support for a fully functioning main scoreboard (I take your point and agree with it about two full scale versions).
Re-furbishing the old version in mid August would be throwing more money after bad IMHO and I'm not even sure it could be done in time to be of use. All I know is that the present machine has failed too many times in its relatively short life.
Maybe we should drag the old manual one used at Bath over and get that up and going.
Frustrating for those of us in the Taunton chapter as we contributed some £10,000 towards the "new" Gimblett score-board. I can recall many saturdays just before many Xmases doing parking duties and it always seemed to be in the rain!!!!
I understand plan is for old scoreboard to be pulled down at end of season, a new stand is going in where the green seats are going back in area of old scoreboard.
wsm fan I understand plan is for old scoreboard to be pulled down at end of season, a new stand is going in where the green seats are going back in area of old scoreboard.
That is correct and I also believe it is a 3000 seat stand.
It is also to be high enough to stop the boss from that building across the road from seeing the cricket (Joke)
I thought Gloucs had been "saved," from having to move from their shed in Bristol?
In which case it is really still credible to suppose that we will get international games even if we have all the right stands in place?
I thought the central plank of our argument for ODI cricket was supposed to be 'England need to keep cricket in the South West.'
Now, I realise that there will be those who would say that Bristol is certainly not in the South West, but I'm pretty sure that it is in the minds of the ECB... and equally sure that the 'England need to keep cricket in the South West," argument was based upon the notion of Gloucs being forced to move to a non-international standard ground at Cheltenham or Gloucester, or whereever it was that they would have to move to.
Well it takes us over 10,000 which can't be a bad thing.
The issue is still the question of adequate live score information. Presently about a quarter of the ground only have the repeaters to give them anything at all.
I'm pretty sure that the procedures for applying for cat B international staus had been started before Glouctershire's planning issues came to the fore. Although I would agree it makes successfully bidding for matches less likely with Gloucestershire's Bristol future now assured, it won't stop Somerset in their plans.
Getting the cat B international status for the ground does have some benefits, not least of which the funding that would become available from the ECB for ground improvemts eg improving the drainage (as has happened at many of the other international grounds). They may even include scoreboard imprvements in that category! Having achieved the status it doesnt make it compulsory to bid for international matches at exhorbitant prices
The issue is still the question of adequate live score information. Presently about a quarter of the ground only have the repeaters to give them anything at all.
And that is not good enough, that is why we need two detailed scoreboards.
There isn't 3000 seats under the present scoreboard is therr?
The increase in capacity as a planned move is one thing
The fact that it allows us to apply for B status is another
The two are only linked because one creates the other. The plan has always been to increase capacity and modernise parts of the ground. That aim was there when PA was in charge and moaning about us not moving to the M5
Any international cricket at Taunton would be nothing but extra income on something like a tri annual basis (and I'm not sure how much of that). It isn't the reason or the motivating factor (except for possibly Andy Nash) for the developments
