One branch out aspect of this site was involvement in the development of ball by ball commentary using volunteers to keep people abreast of what was going on in Championship matches as the local BBC cut their involvement. It started small.... and stayed that way for a couple of years. But now it's breaking its shackles and moviing out of Taunton to far flung places.. like Wellington.
In 2008 (I think) - the year before the Long Room and the year the Caddyshack was opened, Richard Walsh and a couple of others (Eric Cole being one of them) had a bit of a bright idea to enhance the cricket spectating enjoyment of some of our poorly sighted members. With the support of the RNIB and some kit donated by the club we started to fill a gap that had opened up in the commentary of some matches.
In the second half of the 'noughties' the BBC were cutting back on their radio coverage and it started to become noticable that they were not providing this important audio lifeline for those with poor eyesight at many matches (as well as those no where near the real home of cricket). Interested parties investigated the possibilities and found out that the RNIB had kit that could pick up a broadcast within the ground on a kind of enhanced wifi hearing aid. They gave some to the club and Richard looked to recruit some people to provide a ball by ball service from the old changing rooms in the CA Pavilion (the players having moved to their new facilities). Ball by ball coverage by SCCC was born.
Grockles got involved because this broadcast could be streamed onto the internet and picked up in other far flung places like Bristol. Initially we sat on the outside benches of the Somerset balcony commentating on all sorts of games that the BBC were not covering, we had a very short session of training and were on our way with two old mike headsets, a old mixing desk and an effects mike hung over the wall. The committee members found this very confusing, especially when we reported from outside of Richard Gould's office and had to walk through their hallowed corridors, not always wearing the required dress.
Roy Kerslake and Richard Gould did early stints, one becoming a firm favourite of the listeners and enjoying it so much it is now hard to get him off the mike and the other being the first man to swear live on air (partly due to the ribbing he was getting at the time from a bunch of 'schoolboys' off mike including the two Andrews -- Hurry and Nash. Gouldy also gave the new Gimblett Hill it's second name - The Dead End.
We got into the swing of things and despite technical hitches and loss of scoreboards etc we muddled through providing a service that seemed to be appreciated and having a bit of fun on the way. Going through the stuff professional cricketers leave in changing rooms was an eye opener I can tell you!!
The second season found us evicted from the CA because of building work and we found ourselves at Ground Level in the infamous 'Shed'. This was located where the Botham Stand meets the CA behind the seating area that was reserved for our wheelchair spectators. It was notable for having a restricted view which meant you had to keep sticking your head out of the door to get a look at the big scoreboard and telling people to get out of the way as they tended to use the front of it as a leaning post.
Technical glitches continued, heads at certain angles to keep headphone connections working, differences in levels of volume because of the speaking volume of some commentators, getting Julian Catternach off the mike, signals not being broadcast (Jon Kerslake and myself commentated on the whole of the final stages of our remarkable win over Yorkshire that year and I doubt anyone else heard our pearls of wisdom and shouted enthusiasm/disbelief as Peter Trego put the Tykes to the sword). It wasn't ideal and would have probably died a death at that point had it not been for the club becoming interested in the positive nature of the service with it's wonderful Black Acre Farm Eggs jingles (inspired in my humble opinion).
In 2010 they purchased a small part of the FM wavelength and moved us to the 'media centre' in the Old Pavilion - the big room used for the SKY boys. We became radio broadcasters, mostly restricted to CC1 and Tourist games as the BBC suddenly acquired a new interest in broadcasting the short form stuff but by now we were something of an institution in the place. Grocklees made debuts, Bagpuss and LoL took a spell though LoL decided it wasn't for him and sitting watching sedatly was much more his style. Baggy continued after avoiding my eye and finding knittiing that needed doing for two years she got the bug and has become one of the team.
The kit has not been upgraded and needs it desperately but the coverage keeps expanding. The FM signal from the ground only managed to reach about 2 miles from the pitch but this year with the launching of Tone FM as a local radio station you will be able to pick up commentary as far out as the following places (thanks to Darren Cullum for this info);
Wellington, Bishops Lydeard, Cotford St Luke, Kingston St Mary, Monkton Heathfield, Thorloxton, North Curry and Henlade.
Anywhere on that circle should pic up the broadcast on 107.8 FM as well as providing a second internet link to partner the one from the ground itself - we still aren't radio regulars to Grockle Minarets (or Bicknoller Towers for that matter) yet but we are getting closer .
There are plans afoot for Tone FM's involvement in the cricketing life of Somerset but that is for others to announce. For now we may have better technology and a more reliable signal to provide a better service, the volunteers are a little less amateur than they were, the payment of a carvery lunch on broadcasting days is still going I hope and the services of Spencer, SCCC's 'Techie', will keep the home fires burning and the "Last Session Kerslake Show" going out to more Somerset spectators for many season to come. It really is a great example of community, club and spectators getting together to organise something that enhances enjoyment and I'm all for it.

Thanks OB but it is mostly others these days. I'll get around to sorting out the repetitions tomorrow. I have a laptop that insists on repeating letters or ignoring spacing requests and I was doing this in a hurry.
The Tone FM feed should expand the coverage though and hopefully might make for a more consistent level. I know Spencer has been working with them over the winter and Darren says they will be taking the feed from the start of the season.

This is a great story of an really excellent initiative. I'd add just two points: the figures on overseas online listening are another angle (Sarah Trunks has analysis) and you might want to think about a location and facilities which will work for the service in the new Somerset Pavilion from 2015/6.
I look fwd to a stint to two in the coming season - if invited. I'm a poor commentator but might be able to add a bit of texture as a summariser.

You can see how bad the local BBC supports Somerset cricket, today was the press day held every year before the season start and there was not a mention of it on BBC West news tonight.

However, I think that the majority of the BBC 'Points West' programme that I saw this evening related to the story concerning Hinkley Point 'C'. Even if they had wanted to, I doubt whether the BBC had the time within the scheduled programme to mention Somerset CCC's 'Press Day'.
Maybe, it will be featured at a date later this week.

In BBC South West's case, if it isn't football it isn't sport - more like getting a quart into a teacup.
Mike - more to the point perhaps - did you see a Points West or Spotlight SW reporter/camera crew there?
I am not sure who was there with TV cameras I couldn't see any TV company names on them.
The local paper photographer seem to be well represented and several reporters from smaller organisations with video cameras.

Grockle I do have more group photos of all the players plus coaches and some of the management in their one day kit and their whites.
I also have individual head and shoulders photos of each player and coaches also in their coloured and white kits. (too many to upload)

I did indeed have a commentating stint, just a single pre-lunch session into which I was plunged with kindly support from Eric Cole but no previous experience or training. Like the esteemed Deacon I think I may be capable of making the odd summarising noise or reminding listeners of the parallels between today's match and one between the same sides in 1893, but I lack the 180 degree vision the job requires or the precision of eyesight enabling me to distinguish between a fast medium or medium fast bowler or - on occasions - to see where the ball has actually gone. I know my limitations and people will just have to wait for the book.

I heard from Spencer this week that the microphones etc are going to be upgraded this year and the effects mike donated last year should be in action at last. Heres hoping for a lovely warm summer and plenty of listeners world wide!

User data I've obtained now shows listeners follow the commentary in no less than 46 countries! An outstanding achievement.
I understand the service initially started so that visually impaired supporters could follow matches.
I'd be very grateful for any further information on how and when it started, who was involved and how it has evolved etc.

Richard Walsh is closer than me Andy and he can give you all the detail you want, either him or Eric Cole. If you get nowhere with either of them let me know and I can give you a general overview but I haven't got the names of those involved from the RNIB etc.
Will be an interesting book! I'm sure that our SCCC Chairman will be inspired to mention Grockle.com in his speeches when he realises the interest shown on this website!! Real SCCC supporters one and all.

The timing of this fortunately coincided with an offer of equipment from RNIB and some sponsorship from Blackacre Farm Eggs the outcome of which after some discussion was the launch of the Somerset Ball by Ball Commentary Service for the 2009 season.
Guy Wolfenden asked me to assemble a team of volunteers who attended a training session following which the service started with just a small handful of volunteers, probably as few as 10 at the start of the 2009 season.
Initially we often broadcast from the balcony in front of the Chief Execs office in the Colin Atkinson Pavilion before being housed in the Potting Shed.
In the early stages volunteers were working double shifts, but as time has gone on more have come forward and now we have as many as 24 on the list of voices we can call on.
At the start of the 2010 we were granted a limited licence to broadcast, and the service also moved from the potting shed at the base of the Botham Stand to the Sky TV commentary position in the Old Pavilion, where it has remained ever since.
As well as tuning in to the radio frequency the commentary is also available through the SCCC website.
The beauty of the Somerset Ball by Ball service is that all of those who broadcast are Somerset supporters who care passionately about their County Club. They all have a varying body of cricketing knowledge and hopefully the content of their commentary is not only informative but also entertaining.
Back at the start of the 2012 season Sky TV did a feature on the Somerset Ball by Ball team, which included an interview with Roy Kerslake, who is a keen and enthusiastic member of the team, and has been since we started.
For my sins I am the one who organises and runs it on a day to day basis.
Some of those who have been involved from the outset include Roy Kerslake, Julian Cattenach, Richard Oliver, Paul Bird and myself.
Others who have been on board and dedicated a lot of their time and energy include Eric Cole and Paul Harper, Bill Luckett, Tom Doyle and Jane Hamlin.

Plenty of lengthy radio commentary sessions can still be found on ‘youtube’.
Although a member I am often at home on the computer and do tune in to the Ball by Ball.
Although the 'technicals' are sometimes a bit Iffy (unbalanced mics often) the quality of commentary is usually good and the passion of the commentators for the game is evident.
It was a real shame that the Beeb didn't continue commentary as they did in other areas but the outcome is probably a more interesting service that is always there!
It is also very gratifying that the Club's attitude to the service and Grockles has moved light years away from the Anderson era!

Have to agree Sloop. Since I became an ex-pat it is a great 'local' feel service that I really appreciate personally.

The BBC have just announced that ALL county cricket - championship, YB40 and FLT20, will be broadcat online this year and be available outide the UK. There will also be some coverage as lat season on 5 Live sports extra, the digital radio channel.
And to get the firt taster the MCC v Warks match - featurin g Steve Kirby and Pete Trego - starting at the weekend will also be covered.

Does this mean that the BBC's coverage of Somerset's home County Championship matches will be competing against the excellent 'Grockles' transmissions?
Can I point out please that the transmissions are the initiative of the club itself and as much as I would love to claim ownership of the idea it actually did not originate here but with Richard Walsh and Eric Cole and the support of the RNIB.

Good news indeed from the BBC - "live ball-by-ball commentary of every LV= County Championship match available throughout the season". Hope they will integrate with existing local provision where possible. I read with pleasure the other thread's account, thanks to all who have played a part.

Commentary will come from current BBC Local Radio teams – This will give more work to the teams that normally only cover the other matches, I bet they are pleased.

Well it might. There doesn't seem to be too much point in providing two versions of the same thing. The answer to the regional support question is NO they haven't.
In the years when we started the commentary they were covering nothing but the odd T20 game for its novelty value.
Somerset coverage was tacked onto, and acted as marginal partner of Gloucestershire commentary.
Cricket commentary rarely happened at all once the football season was back in full swing and Phil Tottle found himself being farmed out to other county's to cover for them when BBC Bristol were not interested.
I think you might find here that they will make the already established internet providers go to away games and cover for the opposition rather than set up a BBC Somerset team- though I'm happy to be pleasantly surprised.
You'll all know by the time I get back in June. The one thing in favour of us keeping our link is that Tone FM want to cover the games and may use the volunteers for that.

You can bet the ECB is covering most of the cost and if they are it should carry on until they stop.
It has to be good thing for County Cricket.
But I fervently hope they take some of the better parts of the Grockle-supported Somerset scheme and have Roy K, Grockle and the Deacon plus others as guest commentators/summarisers.

The ‘Cricinfo’ article which appears below, whilst bemoaning the fact that even broadsheet newspapers have regrettably decided to cut back on their coverage of county cricket, states the following: -
“Regional papers have slashed county cricket coverage as circulations have fallen and employees have been laid off.”
I consider that local and regional newspapers in the South West of England still serve their readerships very well, as far as our two regional county cricket teams are concerned.
Of course, there will be those who expect much more, but when I compare the coverage of county cricket that we receive from our local newspapers with that provided by those who are based in many other counties, then I consider that we are very fortunate indeed.

I think that coverage will continue as long as Richard Walsh continue to do the reporting.
I can confirm that Somerset are considering if they might carry on with their own commentary, they will be having a meeting to discuss it.
They probably need to first seek out details of the BBC coverage. Although the press releases refer to ball-by-ball commentary it is not clear whether this means that the whole match will be broadcast.

The Cricinfo county previews will start to appear from Wednesday 27 March. The Somerset preview is scheduled for 4 April.

Nah I'm not there and probably never will be but I know someone who is and far better at it than me.
Being the 'apologist' for Somerset is pretty much a full time job - can't be a 'company man' for two organisations at the same time BJ. That would almost be 'two faced' and Auntie wouldn't like that.

Pleased with the funding from the ECB. Perhaps I shouldn't carp before the season starts, but thankful as I was for the many BBC commentaries from the county circuits last season, I hope that the ECB have included a proviso with the funding that the important thing is GIVING THE SCORE!! I found it very very frustrating last season hearing the well meaning "commentators???" talking about everything except what the score was!
Very true OB. We have been constantly told that it is the first thing you should do at least every over if not more frequently.
It can be a problem at Taunton but you have to hope that the new scoreboard arrangements will solve trying to find a source for it that is up to date with the game :-)

Talking of scoreboards you will be not happy to know that the scoreboard by Gimblett's Hill was not working in the last match.

I was told that the BBC featured a preview to Somerset's 2013 season today on their local Regional West television news, and that this included an interview with Dave Nosworthy.
Did anyone view it?

Seems like it will be Mr Gibson commmentating with whoever arrives from the away side for the BBC at CC games. So nothing really new except there will be a Local commentator sharing the mike with the opposition internet guy at Taunton.
From our point of view that at least means a Somerset view away from home instead of the pretty heavy duty home emphasis at some grounds. I'd hope we don't come over as biased on the home ball by ball but there are some a little more 'Australian' in their approach on the commentaries I heard early last season.

I am glad that Anthony Gibson is commentating, as he usually knows his stuff and has a pleasing voice. I was, however, disappointed to hear him earlier this morning identifying with the oft-repeated myth that prior to last season Trego was primarily known as a one-day player.

Not true Grockle. I've been listening to one day cricket for over a decade now. They did stop sending Tottle or A.N.Other to 4-day games a few years back (the year Langer made that big score is the last season I remember) but they have always had commentary at one-day games.
Well we covered a number of one day games during that season from Mr Anderson's office because there was no commentator actually covering the game I'm afraid Reverse. I'm talking ball by ball here not games where the BBC had a presence

Bob Hunt, who normally covers Glos matches, said he will be commentating on the Surrey v. Somerset game this week. Presumably Anthony is otherwise engaged - possibly in connection with his farming work.

Yep that's the location issue and it won't be the only time this season. Everything seems to be against the ball by ball continuing.
Have just heard there will be no Someret ball-by-ball commentary for the first home match of the season against warwickshire because Sky are covering the match; they will be using the commentary box. The BBC will of course be covering the match online.

Get the Tune in App and look for BBC Live events. One of the numbers will be the ball by ball and as long as you have wifi it should come in loud and clear through that. Works in Oman.

I'm informed it's live event 14.I don't think you'll find information about the app on the BBC as it is not one of their apps.

I can't get DAB radio at home, in a large village near Reading - but no problem 99.999% of the time in my car.
When BBC 5 Sports Extra was taken to the grand prix qualifying, as it was this morning, ball-by-ball coverage is lost. The only solution I could find to continue with cricket was to use Tune In radio and BBC Event 14. I couldn't find it on BBC Sport, which insisted that the only option was the grand prix; or indeed BBC iPlayer Radio on the phone.
Surely some mistake here, when the only way to listen to a BBC commentary is to use a commercial radio player? Or is there something I'm missing?

I have been house - sitting for a few days for a family who have Sky Tv.
Whilst it was enjoyable for me to watch live cricket on their television for the first time in ages, I resorted to my old habit of watching the television with the sound muted, and listening to the game on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra at the same time.
Sadly the experiment didn't work as well as it once did when the games were shown on either the BBC or Channel 4 - the reason being the delay of some 5 seconds before the television pictures appeared in one's living room.
It was quite amusing to hear about the batsman's shot going over the boundary, before seeing the bowler start his run up.
Whilst it was enjoyable for me to watch live cricket on their television for the first time in ages, I resorted to my old habit of watching the television with the sound muted, and listening to the game on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra at the same time.

Can get this in triplicate if you are actually at the match - watch the match, listen to radio commentary and then look at the television screen!
Digital radio complicates it even more, especially when watching the game on a laptop instead of a TV. I used to be able to listen to the commentary, check the replay on the TV and then go into another room and watch the whole thing again 'live' on the laptop

Some will remember my three moments of glory in the bar of the Old Pavilion a few seasons ago. Broad was having one of his frenetic spells, taking three wickets within a few minutes. People were watching the match on the screen, while I was listening on a very small and discreet digital radio.
So I would suddenly shout out "He's bowled him" and everybody would turn round and look indignantly at me and then back at the screen just in time to see the shattering of the stumps. It was all great fun. I didn't let on the cause of my miraculous prescience and I never shall... oops.

I'm still frustrated as heck trying to listen to commentary via BBC Live on the TuneIn app - how on earth do I find out which number station Somerset are on?
A few weeks ago they were on 16, then we seemed to settle on 14. I now can't find them on there either - is there an easy way rather than just going through all the numbers by trial and error?

I had to go through all 18 the last time I tried to use it Shep - we were on 8 that day (that was at home so a decent number to start with if we're in Taunton). I thought they were going to allocate one to each county but obviously not!!
Now back in the UK so the universality of the service disappears and I can hardly get the Tunein app consistently anywhere. Oman - everywhere morning noon and night. Somerset no chance!!

I think at the start of the season each county kept the same number for its home matches - so that would mean Somerset's current match would be on the Derbyshire number. Of course that may have gone to pot by now.
Anyone who is on Twitter give Adam Mountford a follow (@tmsproducer) as he often tweets the tune in numbers - or you can send a message to ask him. I have noticed the better county commentators such as Durham's @MartyCricket always tweet the tune in number for the match they're covering too.

I know there must be a reason not to but why not listen to county commentaries by going through the BBC Sport/Cricket website where they are all listed.
You need access to a PC or tab to do that and it isn't always possible.
