And so we reach the nasty end of the season and the issues of the front end lack of quality in four day cricket has not been rectified. Questions have been asked, answers have not been forthcoming and we find ourselves in a three way competition to maintain fiirst division status where two will fail and only one willl remain. With Derbyshire on a bit of a roll and few points between them and Surrey and Somerset we need to start hitting some form. Piyush Chawla comes in on our side and against Middlesex he seems to have done just that on the second day!!
Although our one day and T20 form has been quite good our four day form has been abysmal for most of the season. Except for the weather saving Warwickshire early on we have been second in most of our encounters and at places such as Horsham we would have been lucky to have even had that accolade. Nothing has gone right. The captain and the MVP allrounder for 2012/2013 have hardly been able to buy a run between them. Our bowlers have been under powered and our middle order has, on occasions looked like a bunch of lemmings fighting to be the first one to commit willow suicide on the cliffs.
We've hoped for better but haven't seen it, we've expected people to come out of slumps only to see them fall further into them. Except for Craig Kieswetter when not sidelined through injury and Alex Barrow as the season has gone on, Championship performances to talk about with pride have been few and very far between.
So it brings us here to a few games left and victory the only real thing between us and a season in the seconds unless a mathematical margin keeps us up. We come to Lord's and face Middlesex needing something to push us forward.
Peter Trego is sidelined with a hand injury, Steve Kirby is sidelined and Jos Buttler has been called up to the England T20 squad and so we are going into the game with what seems an understrength side to some extent. The side to face the 'Sex is;
We still go in 'seamer heavy' having considered the two spin option of including George Dockrell and shelving it. You get the feeling that we would like to bat first and try and set a total and in fact that is how it pans out as Marcus calls right and puts us in.
A lot is expected of our senior players and we have hopes that at this end of the season the 'younger' players have some experience and are no longer dazzled by the lights. It starts well as the skipper, straight from a 50 in the last one day game exercises some coontrool oon the game and himself an exhibits some of the old Trescothick power. Nick Compton is also looking strong until in the late 70's he chooses to play and ill judged shot annd is dismissed by Dexter. His place is taken by Chris Jones who is no longer the part time student who joins for a couple of games at the end of season. He is now a full time member of this team and carving a name for himself as a coreect and highly technically proficient batsman in his own right. He helps Banger to 100 for the side and 50 for himself.
The Boss is the next to go at 116 LBW to Murtagh and the situation starts to look familiar as new man James Hildreth follows his captain back to the pavilion almost immediately having made only 7 before being caught behind off Dexter. Oh dear we all go, the doomsayers start to gather on Grockles and we all look at the sky and hope it isn't going to happen again.
Kieswetter joins Jones with 139 on the board and our short form opening partnership start to do some repair work on the Somerset score. They do exactly that to take Jones to a well crafted 50 but he goes only a little further before he is caught behind off Dexter for a solid 58 at 178. Out comes Barrow to join his keeper and we look for solid defence until CK has a head fit and goes for a big "wahoo" and is comprehensively cleaned up by Patel justt the other side of 200. "Madness" we moan. If only it was unusual in 2013.
Out comes Meschede to join Barrow with a big question to answer. If our senior batsmen can't keep their heads can the players called in do anything more? Well it seems that they can as the two young men start to put up the defences, batten down the hatches and look to go down fighting. Unfortunately CM has no luck and is stumped lifting his foot after only 7 balls with no addition to the score. We doubt we will reach batting point territory (not a surprise this season) but we misjudge the back end of the Somerset batting line-up. Lewis Gregory looks rusty and stays a very short period before he is caught by Robson off Rayner only moing the score to 211.
Supporters expect the worse. The most negative forum posters can be heard cackling in the wings and we look to analyse another poor first innings - one of so many. Bbut we all do this without accounting for new boy Piyush Chawla. The young Indian spinner is know as a decent bat but little prepares us for his work with Barrow from here.
211 becomes 318 before Alex is LBW for an excellent 65. We have bonus points!! But PC is not finished. Alf comes out to support and the score continues to creep upwards. By the end of Day 1 the nightmare of another batting collapse has become the enthusiasm of 332 for 8 and the hope of more to come!!
Re: Peter Trego. Not sure if he will be fit but I would say that his form with bat has been so very poor in the CC this season that he should be considered- for selection purposes – as a bowler. In other words, if he’s one of our 4 or 5 best bowlers (depending on how many bowlers we want to pick), select him, if he’s not? Omit him.
Jamie Overton has generally not been great away from home this season but did bowl well in the YB40 at Lord’s and the Lord’s tracks often have pace and bounce in them. For this reason, I think I would bring Jamie back into the side.
I assume Jos will return.
Lord’s is normally a one-spinner ground. It would seem perverse to drop George as he has just found form, so George would be my choice of spinner. Let Chawla try and find form in the second XI ahead of the final two homes games, I think?
Still not convinced by Tresco – if Middx pick Rayner, then I think he’ll pick up Tres quickly in both innings (if Marcus gets past the new ball).
But I accept that there’s zero chance of Tres being dropped.
I think the team that will be picked is:
Tres
NC
Jones
Hildreth
Kieswetter
Barrow
Buttler
Trego (if fit, Meschede if not)
Chawla
Thomas
Kirby.
I’d pick:
NC
Jones
Kieswetter
Hildreth
Barrow
Buttler
Meschede
Thomas
Dockrell
Jamie O
Kirby

On further reflection, I think they'll pick four seamers for Lord's. Still suspect that, perversely, George will get left out having just found something like his best form.
In original teams above, I forgot that Jos would not be available. I suspect team will be:
I suspect that Craig M may play, irrespective of whether or not Pete is fit because Craig M is regarded as being a good bowler to left-handers - Middx are likely to pick three of them in the top six.
If Pete is out, then Craig M will replace him but, otherwise, I suspect that Craig M may come in for Jones, prompting the sort of batting order re-jig outlined above.
To be honest, though, so few people have made an ineluctable case for inclusion that I think there are other permutations that they could go for.
Perhaps they will be keen to retain George because of his form but won't want to leave out their overseas player? But if we do play both spinners then I think they'll want to attempt to have four seamers in the side as well and I don't think that's possible unless Pete is fit -- not without creating a stupidly short batting line-up,
It's far too expensive for me to even contemplate making Lords for the whole game.
I'm hoping there will be enough playing time left for a trip up on Saturday when train fares are less expensive ( only £33 with disabled card!) and entrance is only £5.
He has also generally not been effective in CC games away from Taunton, IMO.
However, a typical Lord's track has bounce and pace and he is the only guy that Somerset possess that is well-placed to take advantage of those traits. Hence, if cricket management judge the track to be a typical Lord's one, then I think they'll get Jamie in there.
As an aside, he did bowl notably well in the day/night Pro 40 game at Lord's earlier this season.
We have nobody else that approaches his pace, and only really his injured twin and Hussain (whom I watched bowl like a drain at Lord's in the corresponding fixture last season) can approach his height.
The forecast for the first day is unbroken sunshine as well, so if we have to bowl first one doubts there'll be much swing for guys like Alf or Pete (if they play).
DN tried to bill the Warwickshire game as a really good one for SCCC on the official site. I see that as a generous interpretation given that we would probably have lost if not for rain AND that the oppo were without three main pace bowlers.... Woakes, Rankin and Wright. Yes, we were without Jos and Overton but I don't think Jamie would have played anyway on what was expected to be a slow turner, whereas Warks' team selection implies that at least two of their missing guys probably would have played (Warks picked two very inexperienced seamers for the game).
When the overhead conditions at Lord's are clear it can be a great track for batting on so if we get to bat first tomorrow there should be no excuses for not making hay once we're through the new ball, but then I'm sure we've been thinking that a few times this season.
Pete Trego, Steve Kirby, Jack Leach and Adam Dibble all injured or unwell and Jos Butter unavailable.
Squad.
Marcus Trescothick (capt) , Alex B arrow, Piyush Chawla, Nick Compton, George Dockrell, James Hildreth, Lewis Gregory, Chris Jones, Craig Kieswetter, Craig Meschede, Jamie Overton and Alfonso Thomas.
That will mean two spinners, favourable conditions or not. But Gregory has not managed to convince with either bat or ball at CC level, to date, so I certainly don't think we should leave George out for him after six wickets in the last one and I cannot imagine we'll leave out Chawla for him.
Kirby seemed to have a slight limp yesterday - possibly of ankle origin but I assumed it was minor and would be shaken off.
If he doesn't recover in time for the Surrey game then one wonders if the prospect of a loan signing might be on the cards? We're saying Jamie Overton will not be available and it seems that something has rendered Dibble unavailable once again.
Last I heard of Hussain (prior to Edgbaston) DN had apparently said he was injured too?
Presumably we need to await the results of the second scan on Pete's hand?
So? I'm sure there will be comments on here about the Pro semi-final, there's already been a comment on another thread about the Surrey game re; what our strategy might be and, I dare say, there may well be some comments on the away Ashes series well before it gets under way.
I think they would play Jove over Kirby anyway from last week, and Mesch over Tregs.
I would personally have had Adam over Alfie but don't think the club would ever do that.
Liking the idea of 2 spinners, we have to try something and as it is sounds like we have no serious seam bowling choice anyway other than Lewis.
Migraines can be terrible - my sister often misses three or four days at a time of her job, sitting at a desk in a quiet office. I get about two a year, often lasting as much as 30 mins when my vision goes a bit wobbly and my head hurts a bit.
It required one of my Aunt's to sit in total darkness for up to 10 hours to get rid of hers. When I used to get them in my younger days I lost all but the middle vision of both eyes.
Cool and cloudy in London this morning. Still forecast to clear.
Middx will be clear bookies' favourites for this one, mainly because of their far stronger seam attack. If we are to upset the odds then I tend to think that three men in particular - Compton, Kieswetter and Alf will need to come up REALLY big.
The first two are the main batsmen in form. We might pick two spinners but I don't see it turning much for the first couple of days so will probably need a yeoman effort from Alf to lead a seam attack that may have only two other members. Regardless of whether we have two or three other seamers, Alf will have the responsibility of providing leadership as the others are all really rather inexperienced.
I hope that Barrow can build on two patient knocks vs Warks. And Craig M made 59 in this most recent CC game vs Notts so really hope he can build on that too.
If we do play two spinners then I think it's conceivable that Jones might get replaced by Gregory to give us four seam options.
I think picking Gregory ahead of George would be quite silly unless MT and DN are absolutely that there'll be nothing for spin, throughout.
I seem to remember that a couple of seasons ago Trescothick's bat manufactuer announced that they would pay him £1 million (or £100,000 or something in between maybe) if he hit a straight six over the Lord's pavilion. I wonder if that still applies. A good day for it if it does.
Very good seam bowling from Middx - they've had no luck so far with balls going past the bat. We've also seen some good 'soft hands' stuff from our guys to stop nicks going to slip.
Thanks Grockle. I can never find any listings of which match is on which live event number and usually resort to trying them all out until I find the right one!
Given away against Dexter. Not what we needed from NC at all.
He took an age to tear himself away from the crease - beyond annoyed with himself.
With the short boundary runs should not be hard to come by here and we need a large first-innings total - of the order of 400+ to be in this game, IMO.
We need two more similar sessions, Tumbles. They bowled very well with new ball but looks like nada in it for any type of bowler by lunch which was what made the NC give-away so frustrating ... I think he was already thinking '150 for me here'.
I didn't mean he was complacent. I mean I bet that's what he was thinking after he'd nicked off when he was standing there with a feeling of abject disappointment.
You've failed to understand what I mean. And, I'd suggest, you've also failed to understand Compton.
That is simply not a thought which is consistent with either his psyche or his modus operandi.
And I would suggest that if your second post reflects more accurately what you meant, then "already thinking "150 for me here"" was an extremely poor way of expressing it.
Or perhaps your second post was an attempt to reposition, rather than restate, your argument.
Ball from Dexter swung but I did not feel it was particularly close to off-stick. He's not in any real form at all, Hildreth. Really needed more from him.
AGod Thanks for your expert psychological profile of Compton, FE.
Now, perhaps you could return to your real job and serve some punters or something?
Others 'can be the judge' of whatever they want but it's ru
shed typing in between deliveries so I wouldn't read too much into it.
About as expert as your mind reading of Nick on his dismissal and your x-ray eye sight on James's, unless that is you are qualified and where using Binos to viiew the action

How bad is your eyesight, Nailsea? I am sat right behind the arm and can see James's stumps perfectly well, thank you very much.
As for NC? Other than when a batsman has been disputing a decision (which he was surely not doing) I've never seen anyone take so long to drag himself from the crease.
What's your insightful explanation, Bailsea? That NC forgot where the pavilion was?
If I earned my living playing this game I'd be unhappy if I wasn't getting runs Nailsea.
If I wasn't getting runs because I was unhappy I'd start questioning my professionalism and my ability to deal with the issues of being a paid cricketer.
I hope its the first and not the last - I've heard nothing that suggests he is looking for or being pushed towards another berth somewhere.
A sea of 'flappability' around a little piece of solid ground.
When will they learn?
There's having faith in yourself and then theirs playing for your team. Enough indications this year that faith in themselves is probably going a little too far presently and working for the team is a much better prospect.
Unfortunately, Grockle, the answer to your second question is probably 'in the winter, when DN makes it clear to them that 4 day cricket and 1 day cricket are two different games.'
Well they haven't learned it in other winters - they've just got away with it a little better in the summers. Does Dave have some other kind of explanation that beats;
"Remember when we played Warwickshire in a 4 day game and they concentrated on solid defence, bowled you lot out for 50 and stuffed your backsides by an innings and a cricket score?"
You'd sort of think they might have learned from their mistakes after that one.
What did Brian Rose say when his departure was announced?
It was 'I seemed to be saying the same things over and over again to captain and coach and players about what we need to do'. That was actually in the context of coming second in one-day finals but when you watch shots like CK's then one imagines that DN may be thinking similar thoughts about the CC.
We've changed the voice telling the players what they need to do, but...
Lewis, I'm afraid, looked out of his depth vs Rayner. Not guilty of doing anything daft but just not having the skill to deal with it. Method of dismissal obvious before it happened as he was keeping short-leg very interested.
Ring rusty if nothing else. Alex looked the same in his early innings. It's not for them to do the big stuff presently Average is hitting the head of the nail when he talks about concentration.
Getting to 50 is NOT getting the side over 400. Application has to be maintained.
AGod Yes.

yes AG nothing ever changes, rosey was fed up banging on about the mental attitude of the county with one of the top 3 playing budgets
Barrow and Jones now 2nd and 3rd top scorers in this innings and the " senior " batsman ????????
We really do deserve to go down playing like this and it gets more and more likely that we will !
Yes, from a distance, very well done to Messrs. Barrow and Jones today.
As I said on an earlier post on another thread, IMO not many of Somerset's "promising young players" have made much progress this year, with some even having regressed.
It's good to read about the performances of these two today at Lord's.
Well two of the 'senior batsmen' put 79 on for the first wicket Rodders and one of them is the highest scorer presently in this innings before we tar them all with a lack of anything.
The man who has taken@#$%&on here for almost a season hit his second 50 in two games so give him some credit at least.
Hildreth failed but two of the 'Youngsters' introduced to fill the gaps seem to have done their job and we will pass 300 thanks to the solidity of Jones and Trescothick and Barrow. How far we get past 300 will depend on the wagging tail.
Be thankful we have quality in the back field rather than miserable that 2 batsmen who should know better can't leave a juicy one alone.
The mistakes were made by Compton and Kieswetter who lost their heads when in. 2 out of 7 ain't that bad sir.

Very well done to Baz! His technique and application are growing on me! The Jones boy too - well batted.
Will be very interesting to see what the par score turns out to be on this wicket. It doesn't seem to be a fine batting wicket so far. I think Piyush Chawla might have a say in this match.
We now need Alf to play for 350 plus with Chawla and Jamie is no rabbit so the boys at the end have done us proud marshalled by the innings of Mr Jones and then Mr Barrow.
Was Craig just unlucky with his stumping? It seems that AG suggested he didn't give it the charge or anything.
Six of our batsmen got in with scores of over 30.Does this suggest its one of those wickets when you never feel you're totally in, or was it just throwing your wicket away?
I think Piyush already has had a big say Sloop but I know what you mean.
Im chuffed at the fight at the back end......its been all too rare this year and good to see. Get upover 350 and as far as we can and get into them tomorrow.
'Gregory and Dibble have had injuries most of the season' quote Grockle. Really? Factually incorrect. Confusing it with last season perhaps? Anyway let us focus on the positives. Well batted Jones, Barrow, Chawla and the skipper.
Reading back through the thread I wonder if Nos will be here over our winter?
I just assumed he'd be going back to SA and returning March time next year.
Is he on a 12 month hands on contract or is he allowed home for 6 months?
I noticed that on MTWD’s thread on this game, Jonathan Winsky reported as follows: -
“This match is indeed taking place on the same pitch as where Monday's Yorkshire Bank 40 match v Leicestershire took place, so effectively today is a day three pitch and Saturday will be a six pitch. That probably has played a part in Middlesex's decision to select a second spinner in Ravi Patel at the expense of Toby Roland-Jones.
However, Somerset have taken the opposite view, with only one spinner in Piyush Chawla selected and George Dockrell not.”
I don't understand how a track used for 80 overs is equivalent to it being two days old?
Regardless, Gregory for Dockrell looked a questionable move on paper and Gregory will have to bowl really well if it's not to look a poor move on grass.
In any case, Marcus, DN and AH will have seen the pitch and known it was played on earlier in the week, and then selected accordingly, so they must have a decent idea that one spinner was the way to go.
Enjoyed my first ever visit to Lords, although mid way through the afternoon wasn't enjoying the Somerset batting much! A great partnership from Alex and PC rescued the innings. 350+ might be a good score, was a lot of playing and missing and edges dropping safe. Dexter with his medium pace looked the most dangerous, didn't seem to turn much even though the spinners got three wickets.
Seemed a good turn out and heard plenty of support from the west country. Got a bit hot up in the upper tier of the Edrich stand but was a glorious day to watch cricket
I left an hour before close and on my way out Nick Compton was in the nursery nets working hard. A class batsman working hard at his game, a great example to the young uns in the team.
Spent an enjoyable last 90 minutes of the day in the company of AGod.
Seems like I was a lucky charm....Chawla and Barrow batted very sensibly with only the odd false shot.
Had a quick chat with Compo in the nets who was very disappointed with his shot to get out.
At 323-8 I'd say it's honours even, we have fought back well but one boundary can only be 60 yards at most and, for me, the wicket didnt have many gremlins in it.
Our decimated bowling attack will have to bowl out of its skin and would be lovely to get Rogers early.
I know you know a little more than I do about the seconds but has Lewis been available to bowl most of this season? Not to my recollection but if you know better then he has issues he needs to sort for a first team future.
Adam Dibble has had niggles at important times this season hasn't he or has he been generally fit all season? Again, if that is the case he has competitive issues he has to deal with in the winter to make a long term first team future at this club.
If I'm 'factually incorrect' then both these players have jobs to do to make a name for themselves at Taunton.
Lewis picked up a side strain in a game I was at in the yb40 v middx. He did no bowling till about July. He's bowled quite a bit in the seconds in tha last couple if games with some success prob why he's in here. Dibble has been fit some of the time but injured now and again. He was out all last year.dint know why he's no played more to be honest!!
Well done for the recovery but I fear that if we can put on over 100 for the eighth wicket then they are likely to get a lot of runs against our depleted attack.
Nailed on draw at best logic says but as always I live in hope !
I enjoyed a good (and very hot) day at Lord's in the company of Bobstan and Wickham - and it was most pleasant to meet Streeter for the first time towards the day's end.
Somerset were clear winners of the first session and the third; it's a pity that the second was so poor for us. However there was much to be pleased about, particularly the batting of Trescothick, Jones, Barrow and Chawla.
Back for more tomorrow and will stay until we win. And by my reckoning we are now one point ahead of Derbyshire, so if it rains tonight and doesn't stop until the end of September we shall be in Division One next year.
I've little to add to LoL's post - except that we also enjoyed the company of Bishop Odo (too little of this parish).
I particularly enjoyed some vintage Trescothick shots, some good cover driving from Jones and some clumping shots from Chawla. But I thought that the best innings was played by Alex Barrow, who played beautifully. It was a shame that several batsmen got out to poor shots (Dexter got at least two wickets too many).
Very enjoyable day's cricket, and fantastic to see the 2 Taunton boys kicking on and getting good scores again.
Assume that Chawla is known around the circuit as 'PC', and that the announcer got in a muddle.
As for whether or not he is a policeman, why not ask DI Stevens?
A Middlesex fan that was sat behind me before I met up with NW5 told me that Dexter often picks up 2 or 3 wickets with the tactics that he used today - gentle swingers wide of off-stump and waiting for the batsman to lose patience. To be honest, neither Compton nor Hildreth can really be said to have faced enough balls from him that 'lost patience', would make sense unless they were on very short fuses.
A lapse in concentration from both, I think.
The one that got Jones looked a better one to me - closer to off-stick and I think it bounced a bit as well as swung.
From an aesthetic point of view then I thought Jones's cover-driving was the highlight of the day.
The biggest shot of the day was a massive six to the long boundary by CK off Rayner. It involved him sashaying down the track as did his subsequent dismissal. But the difference, tactically, is surely that Rayner is an off-spinner whereas Patel, who got CK. is a left-armer whose stock ball will leave CK. If you advance down the track to a ball that is turning into you and miss it, it will probably hit your pads. If it's turning away from you and you miss it......
Pitch not as quick as I hoped it would be. But there was some bounce there which makes George's ommission more annoying as, Jamie apart, he is surely the most likely guy to extract bounce.
I won't be down until the afternoon tomorrow and I hope to NOT see Rogers (other than in the pavilion) by the time I get there.
I will be interested to see which end Tres tends to bowl Chawla from. With a conventional leg-spinner such as MacGill or Warne that rips their leg-break then I think you'd bowl them from the pavilion end such that they'd be tempted by the short boundary to hit to leg against the spin. But with Chawla not turning his stock ball much then I think we should probably bowl him from the Nursery End with the game-plan be hope they are enticed by the short boundary to drive through the off-side and get them bowled through the gate or lbw with the googly.
Lol has the sun "got" at you. Is it possible to enjoy the company of Wickham and Bobstan?
Don't tell him but I think that Bobstan is an utter nutter.
I'm pleased you all enjoy your time at Lords.Could you pass a message to Tres telling him BR wants you come up on Saturday ,so don't finish it off until at least mid afternoon Saturday.
I'm going to give Baz a new nickname. How about Demon of Frome II.
doc h Very enjoyable day's cricket, and fantastic to see the 2 Taunton boys kicking on and getting good scores again.

Dave Nosworthy also calls him 'P C Chawla', so I think the announcer 'got it right', although if P C is a nickname then it's a little unusual for the PA guy to use it!
'Resuming their innings after a liquid lunch, Smokey Richards and Beefy Botham.'
I wasn't able to follow the day so didn't catch up until the close of play score. I'd have certainly settled for that- particularly in view of our struggles- and having watched Jones and Barrow at Edgbaston last week I am not surprised at their scores. I would hope for another point but do not expect another 2.
In any case while I'm quite prepared to admit to being a nutter I am definitely not an utter nutter - even though I rather like the rhyme.
We have cricket optimists and cricket pessimists on here, but sometimes you sound like a cricket realist, geordie m.
Spending the day with a Tibetan, a Prebendary and a Bishop, plus the two men in white coats that Bristol Rob sent up to London is not that common an occurrence, but pleasant nonetheless.
now this is something to look forward to for next season.
Alex Barrow is a batsman for our future the more opportunities he has been given the more he has shown what he can, I have sent a message of congratulations to him.
I will say regarding Chris Jones I was a little worried about his form when he began playing for us this season after Uni but now he has settled down his batting has improved, I like the way he bats.
If Marcus bats the rest of the season like he did yesterday than I will change my mind on my thought on his future.
Middlesex have taken only one wicket with the two new balls combined.
And Somerset wickets lost per session read 1, 1 and 0 in sessions one, three and (thus far) four.
So yesterday’s debacle of a session two sticks out like the Jolly Green Giant’s thumb.
If one wicket per session is the true "par", in these conditions with the six wicket session two being an outlier caused by impatience/incompetence then we'll surely need to give our best bowling/fielding performance since the home first innings vs Warwickshire?
Welcome, Mr Piyush Pramod Chawla, welcome, welcome, welcome.
Welcome to the UK, welcome to SCCC, welcome to the home of cricket. We now realise that among your many talents: undercover policeman, analyst of political correctness, computer repair specialist, you are also a star batsman.
Most welcome.
I do not know if it will work, but I’m pretty sure that our tactic vs Surrey and Derbyshire will be to attempt to prepare the sort of bunsens that we produced for Rehman last year (the heavy roller may stop us succeeding this time around).
BUT.. a thought that occurred to me yesterday is that if we do succeed in producing a Bunsen, then an Indian that has batting ability (i.e. PC) will probably be a good guy to BAT on such a track.
With the form of our batsmen this year, I would worry about their batting on a Bunsen but maybe PC can bail us out there too!?
Yes AG as if they'll give a toss now we have near to maximum batting points for the first time this season (?)
The cricketers actually doing the job don't tend to dwell almost obsessively on the negative aspects of a particular game. They tend to be too busy sort of... well doing the job.
I bet they gave a toss when they came out yesterday ... were probably fuming and determined to do something about it.. which they've done extremely well.
(We got maximum batting points at home to Warks, I think).
Well he does have to think about his bowling options now and not let this game drag away from him a little like the Warks game did - though weather had a say there.
I don't know if he was the last one to do it, but I.T. Botham made 152 batting at 9 against Leicestershire in 1983. I imagine he will be excluded as there was presumably a reason for him batting 9 (i.e. illness or injury)?

Excellent reply, KB. I notice that Both was batting so low in the order as he was suffering from what was euphemistically called a stomach upset. Good night out in Leicester (if such a thing is possible) the previous evening?
Viv Richards scored 216 in the same match, against an attack headed by Andy Roberts and including Test match bowlers in Nick Cook and Les Taylor, and Somerset won by an innings and 71 runs.
Damn, I don't want to go home, but I've gotta go out tonight. Wondered if yesterday might have been the high point of the match & I'd spend today watching Rogers & co smash our weak bowling to smithereens, but Overton's 1-26 is looking rather expensive in comparison to the others & he's not done badly!
I'm shocked in a very nice way about Gregory & Meschede
Can someone at the ground please advise the rest of us what is going on - are we bowling 200% well or are they batting 0% or have conditions suddenly changed OR WHAT FOR HEAVENS SAKE ??
Hard to believe from miles away !!
Huge wicket. Jamie has started with fair rhythm. Ball to Rogers was a bit wide but he's swung one back at him in the previous over and that may have played a part.
Haven't been able to post until now today for various reasons (incl site problems?) - this is brilliant, scarcely believable frankly - but loving following it nevertheless. Very happy that the youngsters are so prominent, too! Keep it up, lads.
Just over 12 months ago the youngsters proved their worth, the club didn't have a choice. Babies in arms need help from the oldies but in every team they bring enthusiasm and spirit. Well done the boys and the oldies today.
Keep it up.
Lord's pavilion not a bad place to be, along with LoL and Bobstan. Very good bowling from all of the bowlers, each of whom beat the bat on several occasions. Meschede was particularly impressive. And Chawla bamboozled the tail.

How on earth are we going to find a negative slant to out on this day then!?
Got to be our best day in the LVCC all season by an absolute country mile, fantastic.
If we don't get 23 points from here it'll be some comeback.
I reckon as long as we bowl them out under 500 or by teatime Saturday we'll win!!!!
Derby only got 1 batting point so that's 4 points they have missed out, If Surrey get an equally low score that would be great, then a monsoon Saturday in the London area would be lovely.
A superb performance from one and all, to show such dogged determination shows real depth of character.
Well done boys, we're very proud of you...well, some of us are at least.
There is a Grommit on Paddington station, platform 9. Lovely.
Also good to see two Dublin boys as Tweelth Men (Dockrell and Balbernie.
Middlesex conceeded just 7 extras in 130 overs bowled, Overton alone has given away 10 in his ten overs. The only sad bit of the day.
Today could scarcely have gone better from Somerset's perspective. Chawla and Thomas batted very responsibly to ensure that Somerset posted a formidable first innings score. Chawla, with his high bat-lift, gives the ball a mighty thump when he goes for his shots.
Gregory and Meschede both bowled better than I have previously seen them bowl in a first-class match. In the past, Gregory seems to me to have bowled when two batsmen were well set and the captain had run out of alternatives. Today, he responded really well to opening the bowling. He bowled a good full length, whereas, when I have previously seen him bowl in CC matches, he has tended to bowl too shot. The yorker with which he had Rogers LBW in the second innings was as good as one could hope to see - even though Rogers clearly felt that he had got bat on it. I hope that the confidence which he will surely have gained from his bowling performance will transmit itself to his batting.
Meschede beat the bat countless times and wasn't flattered by his excellent figures.
Chawla, after a steady start, looked a real threat. He is already looking to be a really good signing - well done Dave Nosworthy.
Reverting to the first day, AGod had said, in advance of the match, that he would be amazed if Marcus Trescothick lasted for more than five overs after Rayner (the off-spinner) came on to bowl. I am sure that he will have been delighted to have been proved wrong - and, indeed, will have relished the fact that Trescothick looked untroubled by Rayner.
What a great team effort. Particularly pleasing that the youngsters in the team have contributed significantly towards what should be an emphatic victory. Barrow and Jones with bat, Gregory and Mesh with ball...well done lads. They are the future, but here they are the 'now ' and I am very proud of how you guys are progressing. Also I must mention PC...brilliant all round display.
Wonderful, wonderful - brilliant day.
If I could just throw in this because I and others have been consistently pleading for us to use the youngsters more. Unfortunately, it is management's conversative nature which means it only ever happens when they are forced into it, because there is no alternative - remember the wonderful performances last season without the stars!
As Donald Sutherland said in "Kelly's Heroes" - "less of the negative waves Moriarty"
I don't expect to hear from Mr A for the rest of this weekend but we have to put this one to bed and take maximum points. It's not over but it will feel a whole lot better after this.
What a superb day - best of the year? Can anyone think of a better?
Approach to tomorrow will depend, in part, on the weather, I think.
I'm sure the strongish cross wind helped us to swing the ball far more than Middx managed yesterday.
If the wind is present again tomorrow and the ball swings then we'll probably stay on the attack and hopefully wrap things up within 50 overs or so.
If there's no helpful wind and we can't get it to swing then it may be a case of sitting in, keeping things tight and chipping away with Chawla - and game might well then extend until Saturday.
Meschede was brilliant in their first dig - great line and length and just the right amount of swing.
Jamie was lively and got a bit of swing and dished out a bit of chin-music. Too many no balls, obviously.
Alf was okay - didn't carry huge menace but kept things tight.
Gregory was a surprise with the new ball and pretty good in the first innings, then excellent with it when they followed-on. Very unlucky with a couple of huge in-swingers which somehow missed the stumps as well as the great yorker to dismiss Rogers.
Depending on whether or not it swings tomorrow, then it may be a different kind of test for CM and LG - a test of patience rather than a test of incision.
I'm not sure about AGod's crosswind. The flags were indicating that the wind was blowing from the pavilion directly to the Nursery end, straight along the wicket. Yes, I know all the answers to this point, and it is possible it was not so at pitch level. Difficult to be sure at the top of the Edrich Stand perhaps.
Agree with all Wickham's points.
Bristol Rob, I told one of our senior players that you are coming on Saturday, so he said they would make sure it's over before the close on Friday.
The highlight of my day was seeing Marcus coming into the pavilion at the close of the Middlesex first innings and the close of play with a beaming smile on his face.
Oh Grockle, you blind optimist!
Maximum points???
Not possible.
Didn't get to 400 quickly enough.
Have you simply NO understanding of how bad things really are????
It's too late to look at all the postings on this thread that have accumulated since I last looked twenty-four hours ago. Bobstan and Wickham saw the same cricket that I did and have faithfully reported on what was clearly the best day's cricket any of us had seen this season.
My personal champagne moment was a four swept to the square leg boundary by Overton with such power that it seemed to hit the boundary board before it had even left the bat.
And now here's a PQQ to be asked fifty years from now:
When did two Devon born bowlers last open the bowling for Somerset twice on the same day at Lord's on a Thursday in August?
I can't imagine quite as good a day as yesterday, the Msex batters have a little pride to play for at the least, but 3 down for 80 before lunch would do me nicely and a finish by 6.30-hoping not to have to bat again.
It was joint best, Grockle, with the second day vs Warks, IMO.
Yeah, we got wkts from Meschede and Gregory this time which weren't necessarily expected but then Jamie Overton and Jack Leach announced themselves vs Warks.
Still think today will depend on whether the ball swings - and this ball last night seemed to be less 'durable' from that point of view than the one in the first dig.
If it doesn't swing then we'll have to really work hard for our wickets as the pitch will be of no help, I'd think. Chawla has said there's nowt in it for him.
I don't think that the accounts of yesterday's play mentioned that Compton held a screamer in the slips off Rogers in the first innings and Trescothick caught a beauty off Denly in the second.
I reckon that Jove will fancy his chances against Robson this morning.
As an ex wicket keeper when Iwasn't keeping I found I couldn't field in the slips because the angle of the ball was wrong .I wonder if that's true of Alex
Alex has been a regular slipper even before his short spell keeping.
He's a brilliant fielder anywhere.
I've got nothing against Nick slipping I was just surprised he was in the slips as I'd never seen him there before.
NO Tumbles. You need to read back. Let me try and explain.
The counties involved in the RELEGATION BATTLE were defined in the third week of April to about the end of the first week of May. Somerset were part of that 'battle' and were going to be in it all season.
NO other county is allowed to enter the 'battle', especially if they take OUR place. I hope that makes sense. Somerset are not allowed to leave the 'battle' they are in and are only in it with Derbyshire and Surrey. That is the way the 'majority' of cricket watchers and supporters understand the term 'relegation battle' it seems and therefore it must be true.
I hope that clears your confusion, even though you may be right. I don't know what to tell you. This is what we have been told is the way things are.
Nope nobody said any of that. Those of us that were not delusional said we were in a relegation battle. We were and we are. And it looks like wsm may well be right about there being a winner in Kennington and so irrespective of the result here we will still be firmly in the battle at the point that our next match starts.
Only way we could decisively end the battle in the right way prior to the final round of games would be to decisively beat both Surrey and Derbyshire - with a wide points margin in those games.
Surely that was what it was all about AG? Somerset were battling for their very future in CC1 and would never get out of the maelstrom that relegation forced on them in the fourth week of the season!!
Gosh you mean it was all balderdash and anyone can move up and down the table rather than being placed in one half and forced to stay there!!
Golly the world is a much better place than you made out then. Notts CAN move into the relegation battle can they?
I think Grockle means that if everyone thought Gregory was a great pick for this game then there's be no need to praise the pick as it wouldn't have been out of left-field.
The seconds suddenly started picking up about two months ago and - maybe - that's starting to feed into the firsts with the promotion of some of the guys from the seconds?
It might be that DN is really getting through to the younger players.
FE, And is that three four slip catches for Marcus.
Marcus has been catching those going straight to him but have been missing those he has to stretch for.
I couldn't be more pleased that in this match he has been catching all of them the easy and the hard catches, he has also been making some good stops along the ground according to the commentators.
AGod I think Grockle means that if everyone thought Gregory was a great pick for this game then there's be no need to praise the pick as it wouldn't have been out of left-field....
Really? is that what you think I meant? Ahh well you can't always be right I suppose.
No criticism of you SLC. Just making the point that no-ne would have picked him for this role.
Well when I suggested that I was told I was 'factually incorrect' so it seems that has NOT been the case.
He has been on the 'possibles' so I have to assume he hasn't been showing form that suggested he should become a definite.
He's probably not done his chances any damage this game though. Very pleased to see CM step into the role with Peter sidelined. Though PT hasn't been the revelation he was last year with the ball this season.
He could hardly be a revelation two years in a row!
But the reality is that none of the senior pacemen seem to have picked up as many wickets as one would hope though that is surely, at least in part, a function of having bad totals on the board?
Gregory did take lots of wkts in the most recent second XI match vs Essex and that might have helped him to get the nod although, having said that if we were determined to play four seamers than I don't know how many other options there were? Dibble out, Hussain presumably still injured? Craig O not fit to bowl.
It looks like it was something of a master-stroke by Tres to give him the new ball.
Top banana!!! Hopefully big confidence stems from this!
We won vs Derbys but I think the players knew that was an unconvincing win vs an unconvincing opponent - but this, surely, is a bowling and fielding performance to instil some genuine confidence...
What a terrific 2`1/2 days! Makes selection for Tuesday rather interesting.
Lets hope the weather gives us the chance to get a (hopefully positive) result in the next three! If the weather plays ball, it should be in our hands to put ourselves in a healthier position and dent the hopes of our rivals.
Supposedly the long term forecast for September is excellent.
Team selection will indeed be interesting, Edinburgh.
I still suspect we'll try and go Bunsen as most would fancy George and Chawla vs Ansari and Batty (if he turns up) and our guys vs Wainwright and Wesley (if picked).
So it could just be a case of George for Jamie, but if Pete and/or Kirby are fit then it gets interesting as far as selection is concerned.
I keep reading on here that 'Kirby has been unlucky', but I'm always dubious about that being said very often about one guy over an extended period of time.
Well if you beat the bat consistently in a game (and I've seen many more than one session where that has happened to Steve) and the batsman fails to connect is it the bowlers fault?
Grockle We haven't just won a game.
We have won a game by an innings and 179 runs in 2 and a half days with what many of us classified as a second string side before it started.
With one or two exceptions the team selected was forced on those who pick the team.
Grockle - my answer to your question is that the bowler, in that case, needs to look at doing something different - pitch it up another half yard or attack the stumps (if they miss it then they get bowled or lbw or whatever) you cannot keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect to get different results.
Re:the team selection - to be fair Old Boy has been saying pick them for ages but then he was saying that when the seconds were getting mullered such that the young guys were giving management no reason to put them in the team.
What is particularly pleasing is that some improved second XI form of individuals is getting brought with them into first team cricket.
So the failure of the batsman is the fault of the bowler is what you are saying? Batsmen play at the ball, they are tucked up, they waft and fail to connect and that is the failure of the BOWLER'S technique.
Or is it just a case that a bowler cannot be classified as 'unlucky' if AG doesn't rate them'?
It must be a failure of the player because he can't be 'good but unlucky', he has to be substandard because you rate him as such.
Sounds like that to me but then it is only my opinion although it is based on watching the man on far more occasions than I think you have.

Indeed they do: but they lead us by only a single point, and their only remaining fixture against a team below them is at Taunton.
I'd say it's definitely 2 from 4 now, whereas it had looked like 2 from 3 for a long time.
Oh Yes...it's healthier certainly but the patient is still not out of the woods. My faith is the same...just hope their resolve is strong. Still say if we win everything we'll be fine.
Grockle, as you changed your post of 1426 this afternoon after you handed your paper in, to the correct number of points would you remove my post of 1436, please? Detention for you next time?
Short but sweet day.
Fine bowling by Lewis Gregory, who rounded off the match with a superb yorker (the sort he used to produce in one-day matches before his injury), which was wasted on a No 11 (not that I am complaining).
The other bowlers all bowled well, with Jove producing a devastating yorker to clean up Berg.
Excellent catching by Marcus Trescothick , one of his catches being superb.
The side was well led by MT and the team spirit shone through.
Same XII (and similar performance) against Derbyshire, please.
Fantastic victory, gives one great optimism.
As for next match, we are without George with Ireland and Jove together with Jos in England 50 overs team. There is also talk on Cricinfo of Alfonso playing for someone in CLT20 whenever that starts. So we could need Steve K Peter T or Adam D dependent on their fitness/recovery from illness.
Yep sorry CH. I went back and looked and found you were correct. Sorry I'll put the same on the post which is what I should have done in the first place. Although between you seeing the 21 and posting and that getting to the thread, I'd seen whoever it was who posted 23 and gone back and checked it so the whole thing crossed. Nevertheless it should always be that you state an edit if someone has already posted after you to avoid misunderstandings so I'm most definitely in the wrong.

George is only with the Ireland team for one day next week - the ODI against England in Dublin on Tuesday.
There is talk of naming a substitute in the Somerset side for that day - the first day against Derbyshire at Taunton - and flying George in for the second day. Such a situation would be greatly helped, of course, by Somerset winning the toss and taking first knock.
Alternatively, the view may be that we need a quickie to replace Jove, who misses both the Derbshire and Surrey matches, so much then would depend on the fitness of Peter T or Steve K.
We don't need Kirby. Him
And trego are toothless as an opening attack. We should use him as a coach and if we have injuries only. If a bowler comes in it should be dibble IMO!!!
If we can avoid defeat in our next 2 home games I think we may just be ok.
If we were to win either/both I think we'll be looking pretty good.
Now we have dragged Notts back into it then if we can stay within 15/17 points by the last game then at worst we will have it in our own hands at Trent Bridge.
Weekend is going to be so much better after todays efforts, BLACKBIRD!!!
I have seen results in three of the four-day matches I planned to watch this season. One ended in defeat in a day in a half, another in defeat in two days and a half, and now a quite glorious victory in two days and a half. That means I've seen six and a half out of a possible twelve days - but there is clearly an upward trend.
The most I hoped for from the Middlesex match was in the region of two batting and three bowling points and three for a draw. 23 is a lot more than eight!
Today was another great day in good company - and I am sure it has demonstrated to the team that winning at Lord's can be quite easy. I had advised Trescothick to start the afternoon session with Gregory, though I am not sure he heard me from the Edrich Stand. But he got everything right and today's champagne moment for me was seeing the skipper raise the ball to the crowd after taking five catches. I think it was MikeTA1 who hinted that MT's ability to take catches away frcom his body is not what it was. I know Mike has watched much more cricket than me and I respect his opinion L, but I am sure he would have enjoyed our delight at Lord's in watching eight horizontal feet of Trescothick hurling himself in successful pursuit of the ball. Truly awesome.
And I join in the universal delight for Gregory.

Credit to the selection I say.
Loads of us are quick to criticise on here.
Who of us would honestly have picked Lewis for this game, and further opened the bowling with him.
It worked a dream in this game, bug thumbs up to Tres, Hurry and Nos.
They have got plenty wrong in the first 4 months but credit where it's due here.
I would assume only chance for next week will be Jove out and then a choice of Tregs/Kirby/George to come in dependent on conditions, fitness, availability.
Still a long way to go until safety but things look so much brighter with a win.....
As with LoL, it has come earlier than I expected and in glorious fashion.
It needs to be followed by the one we were mostly hoping for next week.
2 50's and 5 catches in the week, things may be a little previous for those writing off our present captain as past it.
Consolidation and concentration at the task at hands boys. The vultures are still in the trees with their fingers on the keyboard just waiting for the next bit of poor play to dowse you all in dismay and gloom.
But for now.... just smile at their inactivity and hope it stays that way.
Again if they wanted a seamer I think Gregory was the last man standing - as Old Boy suggests it was forced on them.
Where the credit is due is to Tres (or whomever else was involved) that seemed to have decided 'if we're going to pick him let's give him a role that suggests we have genuine faith in him.'
It's all fake psychological voodoo with you isn't it? Don't you ever assume that a person might not be lying to the people they deal with and might be bereft of ulterior motives for every action they take?
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2013:08:30:21:10:14 by Grockle.
It's not a matter of vultures. It's a matter of assessing the play.
Our bowling was brilliant yesterday and sounds like it was very good again today.
Our second session batting on day one was very poor indeed. Subsequent events have not changed my view on that - because Middx did not bowl remotely as well in that session as we bowled in knocking their guys over. Therefore that session was a case of average bowling vs poor batting.
Suffice to say that if our batsmen had faced bowling of the quality that WE produced with the ball, then a collapse of the order of six wickets for about 90 runs would have made sense/been justified.
There remain issues with the bat. With the bowling it's a question of whether CM/LG can/will repeat bowling of that quality in the remaining CC matches.
As an aside Lewis did not bowl very well at Bristol - BUT we all remember that before his back injury he was a dangerous one-day bowler. Armed with fresh confidence, one wonders what he might be able to do vs Notts in the semi...
p.s Re:Alf I assume the CLT20 rumour relates to his domestic team from SA? If not I think there's zero chance of us releasing him to play for an IPL team as I believe him not playing IPL was a condition of his new deal? It would be far from ideal if he took himself off - particularly in respect of Pro 40 as he seems to have regained something like his best one-day form.
Some of us, I think, would have picked GD as one of the Eleven. His height and consequent bounce, plus his recent resurgence of form would have been among the considerations.
Grockle Or maybe they had genuine faith in him perhaps?
In terms of using him as a new ball bowler they'd shown zero previous sign of it in the CC - don't think he'd ever been used as more than second change before?
Bumping Alf up to new ball would have been the obvious move but going the other way proved a master-stroke.
Think after the last 48 hours we should have a 24 hour period of only positive thoughts, which should carry us through until the Derbs thread kicks off at the weekend
It may not be a matter of 'vultures; to you AG but you aren't the only one ripping the club apart after every minute activity and they aren't all as logical and as 'finger on the pulse' as you believe you are.
So your opinion of the value of every criticism of Somerset may not be the same as other's
Then again mine may not be the correct one either but I'd back mine against yours in relation to some critics.

Grockle Or maybe they had genuine faith in him perhaps?
It's all fake psychological voodoo with you isn't it? Don't you ever assume that a person might not be lying to the people they deal with and might be bereft of ulterior motives for every action they take?
Calm down - there's a big difference between 'lying,' to somebody and using some clever psychology to get the most out of them... For example, when Brearley used to hold Botham out of the attack to rile him up was he 'lying,' to him? Or employing some clever psychology?
Alf's team the Titans have qualified for the CLT20 having been runners-up in the South African T20 competition. Alf didn't play in the final though, returning to the UK for the start of Somerset's season.
Titans first match in the CLT20 is on the 22 September.
Sorry, Grockle, but I'm sure that most coaches would accept that a key part of their job is instilling belief in their players. And there many ways to do that...one is to thrust unexpected (in his case unprecedented) levels of responsibility onto them.
Given that Lewis had previously taken 12 wickets in 12 matches then I'd say the move worked a treat, wouldn't you?
Nothing to do with 'lack of grace,' as you put it.
Instilling belief into a player with ability implies you have faith in his ability, Brearley knew what Botham could do and pushed him to get the best out of him.
Your inference was that nothing Gregory had done up to now had implied that he was going to do what he did so the management pretending to have 'genuine faith' in him was something they would apply to get him up from what the stats said.
THAT is a different thing entirely and it isn't the first time you have inferred a lack of integrity in the workings of management and coaches or the level of value they should have in their charges.
You don't seem to understand empathy and seem to believe that the only thing these people do most of the time is look at books of stats and think of ways of manipulating humans according to those stats.
There's no belief involved or enthusiasm or faith in your world of sport AG and I'm damn glad I don't inhabit it.
I'm going to bed. Talk to yourself about what you now think you mean I understood your meaning the first time around.
Any inference from anything I said was drawn by you.
But you are right that Gregory's prior CC performances did not imply that he would do this well.
I highly doubt that even one single person here would contend that they expected him to open the bowling and claim 7 wickets.
He'd never previously taken the new ball in the CC and, as you yourself previously said, he'd been out injured and not bowling at seconds level for a good portion of this season (side strain).
Unless his performance vs Essex in the last second XI game was phenomenally good then I think they took a flier on Lewis in this role for this match as otherwise there would have been nothing for any 'belief,' in this potential outcome to be grounded in.
Remember - public pronouncements on the club re:Lewis in the past had always emphasised his batting 'he will be a ''proper,'' batsman - batting in the top 5 in the CC.' In the past that would seem to be where their belief in Lewis lay.
It was a great team effort, so very well done. I regret that I was unable to get to HQ to enjoy some of it at first hand, but had to content myself by visiting the birthplace of Somerset CCC.
Why wasn't Kirby considered for this match? Is he injured?
If Adam is such a better option why hasn't he been picked more often this year. Again I have been told by someone who knows far more about the seconds than I do that he has been fit to play so what has suddenly made him first choice for Championship matches?
Steve's CC1 record this season is not wonderful (but whose is) but he has still taken 26 at 3.32. So be my guest and assume he is a sudden busted flush and gamble on a guy who has yet to have a 2013 first class record in one of the most important games of the season on the basis that another bowler had a chance taken on him and came good.
I'm obviously too conservative in my estimation of the continued value of Steve Kirby and when Adam Dibble's time is right.
Grockle
I'm obviously too conservative in my estimation of the continued value of Steve Kirby and when Adam Dibble's time is right.
I think those of us of a certain age remember how it is in the twilight of your career. You know exactly what needs to be done, but hard as you try it is isn't necessarily all there as it was a few moons ago.
You want to put in that extra ball with the special uumph but you are now best with the slower version! Steve is a good talker (to himself and others) but unfortunately very often himself can't deliver what his voice is telling him he must do!
IMO he still has many qualities, but the essential one giving the extra bit of beef to the bowling, is really only available to the younger guys. Steve's advantage is that his old body is not prone to so many niggling strains etc as those suffered by younger still growing bodies.
I am sure his future is in passing on his considerable knowledge as the much needed bowling coach (or maybe he has already started!).
Steve has developed as a bowler, every year of his Somerset career and he has kept us going in more than game this year when we've been abject. You are right about beef OB but our fastest bowler is not YET our best bowler and Adam has NO CC1 experience this year at all.
Take the chance on him by all means but please don't infer he is a better bowler than Kirby in a last ditch CC1 game we need to win yet. The only heart I've seen at times in some of these games came from Tango and in case people have forgotten, the club haven't yet given up on Kirby even if some here seem have done.
Lets not hype this up to much, we all know bowlers need the correct conditions and the correct type of pitch to suit their bowling.
The Lords pitch was the correct type for our bowlers for this match, the ball was moving around that doesn't often happen at Taunton.
I hope they do have the same success on other pitch for the rest of the season but don't expect it every time.
Who know if Kirby and Trego had been fit that the result wouldn't have been the same.
iI is certainly going to be an interesting end to the season.
Still think we'll try to prepare two very dry turners for our final two games.
Every chance that we won't be able to get it to swing around as much as at Lord's. Every chance that Piyush and George will be the key figures.
If it's a very dry pitch it might make little difference whether Pete and Kirby return instead of Gregory or Craig M or not.
Re:Gregory - will be interesting to see if he gets a 'Barrow effect,' breakthrough i.e has been given a new role that he's done well, leading to pressure being taken off with the bat, leading to better batting performances.
Grockle Steve has developed as a bowler, every year of his Somerset career and he has kept us going in more than game this year when we've been abject. You are right about beef OB but our fastest bowler is not YET our best bowler and Adam has NO CC1 experience this year at all.

I agree with this. I am very happy with the contributions of Lewis, Craig and Jamie at Lords and it does feel like a bit of a watershed moment for us regarding our future but they are all works in progress and will need to be nurtured. It has also to be conceded that Middlesex contributed to their own downfall and the trio never had their backs against the wall for any significant length of time. Kirby, Trego and Alfie still have much to offer next season. The first two are capable of giving us real control and bowl with a discipline that none of the younger bucks yet have. Alfie is capable of lethal spells of reverse swing when conditions are right. All 6 pace bowlers mentioned plus Dibble can all be vital ingredients for our future, it is a case of getting the recipe right for each particular match. I think we need to back George next season. Give him a proper run of matches and if we're serious about challenging in the longer form, invest in an international strike bowler to give us that little bit of extra penetration that we'll need on a flat deck.

We'll be better with them and when they go we'll be better because of them.
This has to be the Watershed moment because the basis of what is developing is our side for the next 5 plus years and they influence what the newbies bowl and HOW they bowl it.
You want to learn to bowl at Taunton - you have to watch Alfonso Thomas. You want to develop controlled aggression (well most of the time) then learn from Mr Kirby. Slow balls, inswinging Yorkers, adapting to conditions. We have the coaches, they play in the side.
There are more than eleven players working on getting a side on the field and whoever is there is there because of the help of others and because for that game they are the best. No one should be surplus to requirements.
Well they've given both a contract so they must see something in Adam. Go with Kirby by all means but to me he has developed more as a one day bowler but in cc has little penetration now. He snarls a lot and winds up the players yeah but he's in there to get damn wickets!! And he's 36 trego will be 33 and alf is 37 next year. We need younger bowlers in there. Use him yes but not to thevextentbif giving younger bowlers a go. It's got to be the way forward for us!!
Grockle, Kirby was injured at Bristol, last Sunday. He dived to stop the ball and seemed to have pulled a muscle around the lumbar region (or somewhere close)
Yeah, Dredge, if the wickets for the next two are as dry as I expect then Alf's reverse swing may be very important.
Gregory has the sort of action where you'd expect him to be able to reverse it as well.
Not so sure that any of Craig M, Kirby or Pete are particularly reverse swing bowlers.
The performance of Craig M in this match - absolutely top quality orthodox swing bowling - may bode very well for the trip to Trent Bridge at the end of the season. All things being equal I'd be looking to pick him and Pete to bowl in that one.
Cheers Botham. So who has got the 'damn wickets' then Ron? Alf? He has 5 more. Pete? Don't think so. George? Jack in early games perhaps. Jamie?
I agree SK isn't a new ball bowler (never really thought he was - he wasn't signed to be one was he? I thought that was Gemaal) but you are going to give the new ball to Adam?
Give it to Lewis by all means, let's see if he does it twice. Adam has a new contract (a number of 'really' posts when it happened) and I'm sure they see something in him. I hope in 2014 he shows it because he hasn't for me for a couple of seasons - except as well in one day games. I've no idea about CC games, he hasn't played them.
I'm more bothered about how you get Pete into the side after this week. Who do you drop to get both Craig and Pete in?
If both are fit it's possible they will come straight back for Meschede and Gregory with George replacing Jamie.
One factor not yet touched upon is the need to ration the younger bowlers to prevent stress fractures. We've already had Craig O and Lewis suffering from those.
To my mind, Jamie O has done a bit more bowling than is ideal this season, already.
I have particular concerns about possible injuries to the likes if Tremlett and Rankin leading to Jamie being sent on the Ashes tour. DN seemed to blame the bowling that Craig O had done in Aus for his stress fracture. It doesn't take a visionary to imagine that concrete run-ups in Perth, Adelaide or Sydney produce rather more jarring than, say, a softish run-up at Lord's.
[quote Grockle]No AG I mean Craig and Pete because that is what I typed.
That's Meschede not Kieswetter in case your mind is also going that way (no idea why it should but you never

Right. I think both would probably play at Trent Bridge as a swing bowler's ground but either Craig M or Pete might find themselves playing only the first day of the next match before being replaced by George.

You have to drop someone other than Craig from this week's team, in order to get BOTH him and PT into the side for next week.
It really isn't that difficult to follow, AG!!!

Yes, you'd have to drop somebody to get Craig M and Pete and George into next week's team. Jamie won't be there so there's an automatic place for one player that did not play at Lord's.
Why the rush to get Pete T back in the CC team early, where recent evidence suggests he will weaken the side, which may the jeopordise his place in the CB40 team where recent evidence suggests he is vital to the team? No brainer as far as I can see.
Unless you mean that he might be re-injured (?) then I can't see a CC batting failure by Pete leading to him being dropped from YB 40!? That would be crazy...
