The World Turns

By Grockle et al
October 5 2014

Well it's started, the last phase of the ground redevelopment sees the end of the Old Pavilion.  Demolished and removed, the last vestige of the old ground leaves the crease and the total revamp of the ground 'for the 21st century' takes place with the plan that it will all be complete by August 2015.  We shall see.

And so the Old Pavilion goes to the sportsground in the sky.  The last structure of a bygone age moves aside for a modern version of the Stragglers and we all await the structure that will appear over the next few months, seating between 800 and 2000 spectators with a new Media Centre and a bar where the ghost of Pat can serve the ghost of Tony on his seat to one side while the ghost of Bill tells us everything we need to know about the game and the county in his inimitabally miserable way.

The Press Release from the club reads as follows;

"The diggers have now moved in on the building which has witnessed some amazing cricket throughout the years and has also seen the game’s greatest names take to the field.  From Bradman to Botham, Richards to Trescothick and Gimblett to Caddick they have all entertained the Somerset Faithful.

However, a stunning new development is set to replace the grand old building which will take Somerset County Cricket Club to the next level both on and off the field.

The new facility will comprise high-quality covered seating behind the bowlers arm, alongside a large bar and entertainment area, high-quality corporate/media facilities and a magnificent roof top viewing area.

Once completed the new building will also bring the ground up to the standard required to host International cricket."

Will it be 'stunning'?  As many have said, as long as it allows you to sit behind the bowler's arm AND does not look like the Caddyshack most will be happy.  Those who think the pessimistic way expect it to be open only to the privileged few and to leave the members wanting 'as usual'.  The food area has to be better than present - the grub has always been good but there was little space to eat it and it was usually behind the sightscreen. The 'corporate' comment to many means the main part of this will replace the boxes of the 'cowshed' rather than cater for the general public but they need seats for the increased capacity so they have to be somewhere.

The return of the Straggler's bar?  I welcome that although it will never have the ambience of the large garden shed version with the veranda and grass outside of the old Stragglers.  But it will allegedly have the name and therefore it will preserve the memory of those who created the ambience, many of who are watching the present performances from a much better vantage point than those on the ground nowadays.

Will there be a better version of the potting shed (could there be?)?  How will the BBC cope with decent media facilities to report on Somerset games?  Is it right that they won't be in the wind sitting on the floor of a garden shed as they have for decades?   Maybe it is right that the demolition should start with the press box for that reason.  Get rid of the rubbish and replace it wwith something else.  Having experienced the Somerset concept of 'state of the art' I myself am dubious about the facilities to come.  A better press box would be nice (drinking water from a tap rather than a bucket with 'drinking water' on it would be an improvement).  I hope they have moved the plaque to those who reported from the box for many years - Mr Gibson, Mr Green and others - it has been a second home to some for over 2 decades and I hope they get something with a wall fan at least for a new one.

It is the best vantage point on the ground in so many ways.   The roof will be missed by many photographers if not by the BBC.  The cinema seats were the preferred place for so many and although I compared it to a wind tunnel many older supporters swore by it.  The 'media centre' there witnessed more than SKY complaining about the facilities.  Supporters ran the ball by ball commentary there for 3 years with very little.  I'd hope to see some chance to do that again somewhere better on matches when the broadcasters can't be bothered.

But it's the supporters who deserve better.  Ex Vice President's have waited a long time for something at that end.   The Gimblett's has so much going for it in terms of comeraderie but the belief that we lost something when the old places went and we never got it back means that this building is more important to many than it should be.

It needs to be something to be proud of for a very committed and proud part of the supporting public.

International cricket?  It should never have been the objective of the rebuild.  It will be  a by product but no more than that.  You aren't going to be watching England v Australia at Taunton any time soon, if ever.  I may one day get to see Oman play Ireland possibly or two minor celebrity international sides play a 50 over match but that is all.

If Somerset are waiting to join the international elite, then it willl be a LOOOOOONG wait.

I have done this on two threads

Photos I have been trying to put on here of the redevelopment.

Two from the 3rd and two from today 6th.

'History' gives way to 'progress'. It's always difficult but it did need knocking down before it fell down in certain areas.

As I've written, it depends whether the new version respects the old version and is worth putting up.

Trouble is, we won't know until it's here.

Fair point of course, Grockle - if it was as close to falling down as most are saying I guess it had to go. (Maybe it might as well have been done back when the ground floor was remodelled and the old, awful, changing rooms disposed of).

I still find it terribly sad given its place in the club's and my personal history. This probably says more about my temperament than anything else.

That said, if some of the idiots sitting near me as I watched my last afternoon's cricket there were still inside when it was demolished - well, it would be a bit of a trade-off.

Too true. It was the home of some of the most miserable fans I've ever experienced in any form of sport.

Bet they'll only miss it because it was cold and uncomfortable.

We can only hope that there will be some memories watching from the new one to file away before too long.

You must count yourself fortunate, AG. At the OP end of the ground one sees constant locust attacks, not to mention boils and blains on the white faces of the singing girls.

Nobody passed by the front of the OP smallfry. It wasnt on a main throughfare. You went TO it.

Not sure if your post is an insult or an agreement but if you've ever spent half an hour sitting there with Spike you'll know what I was referring to. It wasn't a comment about the 'average' supporter in that area of whom I am sure you are one.

I was referring to the white seats on the ground floor not the cinema seats upstairs sorry if that caused confusion. The front two rows there always seemed to be for the people looking forward to the day while the back two seemed reserved for the 'Grumblers'.

If you were on about the upstairs seats smallfry... those guys walking through are from SKY and you are probably correct in your assessment on the whole.

I can't say the Old Pavilion is my favourite building from a spectators point of view and though I know its history, I didn't experience most of it so to me it's an inadequate bar with decent food but too little space provided in mostly windy conditions for members to watch the game in what should be the best place on the ground.

Not all that enamoured by the newer CA Pavilion though it is better after it's refurbishment.

Just hope this new one pays a fitting tribute to the area it takes its name from and provides a less windy and better watching experience for a larger number of members. Oh and looks at home on a cricket ground rather than Newquay surfing beach.

Seen the pictures but they don't really give the feel of the real thing. Glad to see a Stragglers Bar - memories of Pat, Tony, Bill and many more are very welcome in a new facility.

Yep Scyld gets what the OP was about and that feel of Taunton just before the start of a game at that end of the ground.

Some did have the opportunity of getting on the roof (I think Mike got up there every now and then) I used to enjoy the seats in front of the building (to the right of the cover area) I saw Paul Bird get Brian Lara there in one of the first games I watched. The cowshed used to smell consistently of pipe smoke. The view from the press box is excellent (although a bit cramped) and the scorers probably had the best seats in the house - though the commentating position of the ball by ball people was pretty good as well.

The cinema seats? I know many loved them to death but without thermal underwear there were times when that section was only inhabited by the very hardy supporter in the heaviest of fleeces or a car blanket or three. My father in law insisted on watching from there however much it resembled Filton's wind tunnel. If they can make that view more comfortable for a couple of thousand people without sacrificing it to corporate demands and heavy duty membership fees then they will have done their job and enhanced the ground.

On the 1909 one there was one Bill Teritt Greswell at number 10 who was another Bicknoller boy. Started with the county in 1908 and played his last game in 1933.

His family (I assume) still live in Weacombe House in the village. He passed on in 1971

Looks like a darned good game - especially as we conceded a 44 run deficit on a puny first innings score.

Interesting that one of the Umpires, one Joseph Bean, was a mere 26 year old. According to the cricket archive link he was born in 1876 and died in 1922, aged only 45.

Looking further at his stats. it seems he was also still playing first class cricket. having played for Sussex v Lancs. only two weeks earlier.

Not sure how that worked with the ECB at the time (if there was an ECB then!).

It is good to have all this material on one thread.

I hope those ancient scorecards find their way eventually to the museum, where they will be much appreciated. It is interesting to note that no space is provided on the scorecards of the day for recording bowling figures. Bowling was largely the work of the professionals and they were probably considered less important than the lordly batsmen.

I well recall how bitterly Palairet and I complained on the day that the price of scorecards rose to one penny from their previous perfectly reasonable cost of three farthings.

As for the premature death of the youthful Mr Bean. Given his age, he almost certainly served in the war and may have incurred injuries or inhaled gas from which he never recovered.

I've just realised that the gap between that 1902 match and the first that I watched was a mere 47 years, compared with the 65 that have elapsed since. What the point of mentioning that was I have no idea; I'll have to ask nurse to explain...

I recalled seeing the following tribute to the Old Pavilion in verse form, and which featured in a booklet titled "On Kilve's Delightful Shore" by Frank Stevens.

I trust that there will be no objection to me copying it onto here.

Bear in mind the fact that it was written in 1980, and enjoy as indeed I did.

Salute to the Old Pavilion – 1980

"In the middle of Taunton, there is a sign which always makes me glad
Glad to be alive and well….if just a trifle mad
“County Cricket Ground” it says, pointing out the way
Which I shall take with a singing heart, and a glow inside, next May.

Yesterday, in the gloom and rain, I drove past this lovely sign,
And into St. James’s Car Park in that ancient car of mine.
The sky was sheer November, the time was just eleven
When I looked above the car park wall….and caught my glimpse of heaven.

There, lighting up the dreary scene, and bringing joy to me,
Was the loveliest sight on such a day as you could wish to see….
The County Ground Pavilion, the old one so many love,
Lifting its roof above the seats, up into the clouds above.

Pavilion from which I’ve often watched the greatest of our race,
Hobbs making his golden century, which equalled the record of Grace;
That was in 1925, and on that sun drenched day
Fender made 60, MacBryan a ton in his own immaculate way.

And other giants of the past come back into my mind.
Somerset men come first of course, whose spirits haunt this shrine.
John Daniell, P.R. Johnson, Bridges, Tom Young and J.C. White,
M.D. Lyon, Robertson – Glasgow, and Guy Earle, that man of might.

And so the tale continues. Of “enemies” I could tell,
MacDonald of Lancs., Woolley of Kent, Sutcliffe and Holmes as well,
Hendren and Hearne who once I saw batting for half a day,
Verity, Larwood and Ken Farnes, bowlers most hard to play.

And later, those early post – war years let us not neglect.
When the flashing blade of Gimblett was a sight we’ll not forget,
The bowling of Andrews and Wellard, of Hazell and Bertie Buse,
While Wellard’s mighty sixes clove the sky when he cut loose.

I’m glad to have these memories, and many, many more.
It’s good to be able to look behind, but also look before;
And now on this November night, as I think upon this theme,
I look ahead and thank the fates that gave us our present team.

Botham the great all – rounder, already compared to Grace,
Rose, the elegant batsman, with the captain’s inscrutable face;
Richards the king, beyond compare; Garner the batsman’s doom
Denning and Roebuck, Taylor, Marks, and Dredge that demon from Frome.

And so today when I see that sign, I still feel young and glad,
Glad to be alive and well, if just a little mad.
“County Cricket Ground” it says, pointing out the way,
Which I shall take with a singing heart, and a glow inside, next May."

Frank H. Stevens – November, 1980.

Yep CP - but small beer compared to the rest of the project.

It would be bit of an own goal not to make them wider - with vehicles like the Sky trucks visiting for use of the new media centre. And hopes of one day international cricket.

The entrance really does need to be two vehicles' width as cars and other traffic are stopped on the road outside when a vehicle is halted by another exiting the ground! I would have expected the planning consent to have addressed this!

With new membership becoming available next week I was wondering whether any information has been discussed , either at Local AGM level or through hearsay , as to what membership seating will be available throughout the new pavillion . Also will there be two separate long room packages, specific to one side of the ground or the other, or availability to go between the two.

cricketharris
30/10/2014 19:22
I believe that, to start with anyway, it will be as little as £950 per season to join the great and the good, suitably suited unlike the Long Room dress code, in the posh part of the new pavilion.
Not good news for next years membership subscriptions either if the Long Room membership for 2015 is anything to go by. That is increased by 8.6%. Low inflation? What low inflation?
And in an error in sending out the wrong membership renewal forms it seems that business members of the Long Room pay 25% less than "ordinary" members. And, of course, they can reclaim VAT on what they do pay. All for one, and one for all? I suppose we shall be hearing all that stuff at the AGM about how we are a members club and how important we all are.

Roger ivanhoe
31/10/2014 01:17
Interesting Cricketharris, but can you clarify please, are you saying Platinum business LR membership is cheaper than individual Platinum LR membership by 25% if so for how many do you have to buy to get that reduction?.

Platinum Membership covering all matches.
Championship being CC games only.

Platinum LR Membership for 2015 is being offered at £630 including VAT, for 2014 it was £600 including VAT. Which is a 5% increase for next season.

You can also purchase Championship only LR Membership.

Life Members can also upgrade to either to Platinum or Championship only.

And then of course for next year you can opt for the three year upfront deal, which is
1 year Platinum LR membership and two years for the 1875 club (Somerset Pavilion).

cricketharris
31/10/2014 20:53
My Championship Long Room membership has gone up from £151 to £164 (8.6%)
The origional "wrong" letter sent out said membership would be £101 + VAT which I take to be for businesses as there is no reason to put the figure "+ VAT" otherwise.

Roger ivanhoe
01/11/2014 00:18
I take it you must be a Life Member then Cricketharris, with an upgrade to L R Championship.

Not sure why the club would give 25% discount to a business member, when I understand last year they had a waiting list of over 30 people wanting platinum membership at full price.

Might well have been a typing error, but why not question the club on the matter.

I do wish I had taken up Life Membership, when it was available, but work & family commitments just did not give me the time to watch much live cricket back then.

You can see the slight curve in the foundations that the pavilion will take to follow the curve in the boundary.

Tomorrow and next Tuesday they are starting to pour the concrete for the foundations, this will give it time over the Christmas period to go off ready for the steelwork to start going up in the new year.

I have just enjoyed reading the Almanac, another excellent SCCC production. It includes an affectionate article by Scyld Berry about the county ground, reprinted from The Telegraph, which I think Wickham drew to our attention when it was first published. In it he mentions the lack of atmosphere in the press boxes at some grounds, including Lord's, because all the windows are sealed. (Happily the TMS team at Lord's can operate their own windows).

What will be the situation in our new pavilion in what I think I am now supposed to call a media centre?

I'm not sure SKY had a say in the last 'Media' provision and the BBC never got near the 'better' facilities downstairs even when not being used, preferring the shed on the roof.

Certainly I know of nobody asking the local press about their requirements - but that doesn't mean they weren't consulted, though I expect the facilities to be better than those in the old box.

If SKY aren't happy they just provide their own as they did for some time around the Botham Stand.

It will all be interesting when they are finally unveiled.

You can all see the cones and the sign “Danger Keep Out” just out of sight are double gates this is so lorries can get in off the road so as not to block the road, these gates are locked overnight.

Here is the story.

You wouldn't believe how many car drivers everyday drive past the cones and sign trying to enter the building site. I said to the site manager that people are still trying to drive in this morning.

He said just before Christmas a women driver opened one of the gates and parked her car on the building site over by the players flats. When she return to her car she was asked what was she doing parking on the site when the gates were closed, her reply was “I had an hair appointment and couldn't find anywhere in the town to park.

Since I took that last photo (yesterday) they have added more steel-work into the car park side of the building, it now is showing how much bigger that the Old Pavilion it is going to be.

It is looking a very deep building.

One concern I have (although my view is from a distance) is the walkway around the building where the old men's toilets were, previously there was a bottleneck there at the end of a match when people are walking in both directions. I hope I am wrong I can't imagine what it is going to be like at the end of a match with eleven thousand in attendance.

Looking at the plans it shows a secure gate coming off the Church wall and joining the New Pavilion, the area of the old Toilets is shown as a service area.

It seems you might have to go the long way round to get to Gimblett Hill.

The whole structure looks deeper but certainly not as long as the previous buildings,

Well there's a walkway across the top of the front seating Mike but I can't see a path through to the Gimblett. Just to the secure gate. Not sure what the point of the outside seating in the car park is - a view of cars is not all that popular for cricket fans but who knows.

The non members path seems to be the normal one but right around the back of the pavilion through the area that used to be the toilets. Again though, not sure how you get from the secure gate to the Hill.

Just wanted to thank everyone and Mike in partuicular for all these updates and pictures. For people like me who hardly see Taunton out of season its great to get a view of the build as it happens.

I have only been to the ground in daylight once since the last day of the home season and the farewell to the OP - one day in early January, driving to the ground past the Princess Royal and being able to see the ITB stand was really odd.

The club haven't been anything like as good at keeping us posted with the development but they did tweet quite a good picture today

Looking at the top tier of seating I would think if you were to sit anywhere other than at the front you wouldn't see the outfield nearest to the pavilion. So I wouldn't rush to sit on that top tier to watch a match unless it is at the front.

I don't like it if I can't see if the ball has gone for a four or the batsman has been caught on the boundary.

We get that on the Gimblett's Hill when sometimes the sight screen is part way in front of it, and also the groundsmen nearly always leave the blotter parked by the covers.

They were working after 11.30pm one night last week.

Will they have a clear view of the umpires from there?

Mike TA1

I am sure admin. from the club would have sat down and talked about where are we going to gain extra seating lost this season due to the Old Pavilion and Cow Shed not being available for this years t20 matches.

Now they have put two portacabins where I would have thought a large stand could have been put that has taken away a lot of the space available for a large stand, I was wondering where else on the ground could extra seating could be put?

I enquired in the office I was told a stand will be put between the old scoreboard and the office, I replied a stand is normally put there for t20 matches so that will not replace any of the seating lost due to the development.

Watch this space!

No one says you have to sit in it.... though sitting in it will be the only way you won't see it I suppose.

Like others have said, it's difficult to comment before the thing has its 'makeup' on when you only see pictures. I do have to say that in December I was surprised how short it was. I expected the area of it to be less compact. That space where the porta cabins are seems to be available for another temporary stand perhaps, or at least a bigger one than usual.

The size is just about what I expected, we were saying all along looking at the plans it would go about half way along the Cow Shed, being so tall seems to make it look shorter.

It will be interesting to see what the crowd capacity will be for the t20 matches this season! With the usual extra stand by the old scoreboard we will be still be short of the seating we have lost by knocking down the old pavilion and cow shed.

Does anyone actually believe that changes to the design would have been made if people had adversly commented on it on this site or any other?
And saying that "you don't have to sit in it" is on a par with the Club's arrogent response to a complaint about the hike in Long Room admission charges.

One thing is for sure is the amount of under cover seating has been drastically reduced.

It's not an 'arrogant' statement at all CH. Just a fact.

If you don't like it (have you mentioned this before at all?) then I don't really know what to suggest other than either make your feelings known to the management when they ask (and they did) whether there's any point or not. If it is going to be an eyesore to you then you're gonna have to get used to it or simply not look at it or don't go to Taunton unless you have another solution.

Hope it doesn't spoilt your enjoyment of the cricket. I don't really think it will all that much but I'm sure you'll tell us how much it does anyway. Let's all pray the cricket played by the county in front of it takes your mind off it.

It is believed that the club engaged the same architect for both the Andrew Caddick Pavilion and the new stand, which is currently under construction.

With the exception of the club office, I have never entered the former, but purely from an aesthetic point of view, it does not find favour with me on account of it not blending in sympathetically with the other structures on the ground.

I have always thought that it would look more in place on an estuary somewhere, as a Yacht Club HQ.

Likewise, from an artist's impression of the completed "New Stand", would this be more suited to a minor racecourse somewhere?

At least the Colin Atkinson Pavilion (built over 30 years ago now) is aesthetically suited to a cricket ground.

Personal thoughts only, you understand.

30/03/2015 14:27
If you think that the Caddick Pavilion doesn't blend in with the rest of the ground you wait till you see the new stand. You ain't seen nothing yet!
According to the announcements at todays game that side of the ground is now called The Somerset Pavilion End.

Have to agree with every word about the Caddyshack Palairet.

We had no real view of that in advance - the facilities inside are quite impressive and what the players needed but it does look (and I've mentioned this before) like it should be on Newquay Beach.

But you are going to have to get over the new place I'm afraid. There was no attempt to hide the design. It's been out there for a 12 month and NOW it seems to be some kind of mistake or error? Well it's done and we have it.

They aren't going to knock it down or go 'sorry we didn't know you didn't like it. Please tell us what you don't like'. You may believe that anything at the time of consultation would have had no effect but the consultation process was offered and (I believe) you CH didn't take the opportunity to find out what effect your words would have had.

So.... moan all you like Mr Harris. The stable door is open and the horse has bolted. As Rob has suggested, you'll have to sit in it to not see it and we "haven't seen anything yet" but we will be seeing it for a decade or more so it's a case of..... suck it up old boy.

I personally don't know if you're right or wrong because, like many others, I'm willing to wait until the thing is finished before passing critical judgement.

Have to say.... don't like the name - massively uninventive if they just call it the 'new' big stand. Does that mean we now call the Somerset Stand the 'Old' Somerset Stand? Do me a favour. I'd assume that is a temporary name while they think of one....please.

The "Ondaatje" is designated a 'Pavilion' and is clearly denoted as that on its external wall.

Are there changing facilities within, or or you referring to the Cricket School of Excellence which adjoins the "Ondaatje"?

Colin Atkinson, Botham, Trescothick and Andrew Caddick have all had structures on the ground named after them (as of course are various sets of gates into the ground), so I feel that the newest pavilion should be dedicated to Sammy Woods - one of the first pioneers and folk hero of Somerset CCC.

Alas, I knew him well.

If the club showed that amount of respect for his performances then it might prompt the Council to show as much respect for his resting place which is presently next to the path through the park across the road from the cemetery up near SCAT.

Sammy Wood's grave is in St. Mary's cemetery on the road between Taunton and Wellington.

It is as you say next to the Somerset College, but has always been a cemetery, never a "park."

To add to the confusion, on the opposite side of the road lies another part of the cemetery.

According to Clifford Jiggens' book "Sammy", the Somerset County Cricket and Rugby Clubs provided a solid stone monument at the grave, which bears the simple inscription:

S.M.J. Woods
1867 - 1931
A Tribute to a Great Sportsman.

On the last occasion that I looked, it was being well - tended.

Grockle
31/03/2015 17:43
Well I walked past it for 5 years from 2003 to 2008 almost every working day on my way from the car park to SCAT and

a) While it may be classified as a cemetery, the students of the college see it and use it as a park and so did most other people. I don't think many are aware that it is an extension of the obvious cemetery across the road

b)) The stone is there and the inscription is still there but the grave? Well I assume it is pointing away from the stone but it stands at a triangle of tarmac paths around the perimeter or through the grass area and close to the main road and the bus stop.

c) This man was a double international I believe? A major sportsman in the history of the county and I always thought it was a shame that most of the people I talked to about it in the area were unaware that the stone was anything but a stone. A boundary around it and some kind of historical plaque? Would that cost huge amounts?

Wouldn't be nice if the club asked members for suggestions for what to call the new stand. After all we are always being told we are a "members club".

In a general letter to Richard Gould about the state of the club and the ground I wrote the following:

Perhaps the club ran out of ideas when it came to naming the Somerset Stand, but I would like to suggest it is renamed the Woods and Wellard Stand, commemorating two of the county’s finest all-rounders, men who had in common that they both came from elsewhere but totally identified with the Somerset style of cricket, always committed to entertaining the crowd. The career of one started in the Nineteenth Century and of the other ended after the Second World War, a very large slice of our history.

I received no response to that part of my letter and feel now that the club has twice shown a sad lack of imagination and respect for our great history.

A question to Mike: What's the situation about access to Gimblett's Hill? Are you able to get there from behind the building site or do you have to walk anti-clockwise almost right round the ground? If access is only from one end, it will at least reduce the flow of people walking in front of the benches, but how far will Tractor have to walk for his essential medicine?

Now it looks like three questions...

The big gap (or gap at least) that appears to be to the left of our new structure between it and the Ondatje pavilion.

I learnt today it will be a permanent gap, will make the ground look slightly incomplete for normal matches I'd think.
But logic is for big matches, internationals on main i'd think there is scope for a 4000 capacity stand! This may go back to St James gates & the clouds to fit in that many in!

Potential capacity then is to be 15,000! That to me would need a seat on every spare bit of concrete on the site but sure Guy and Andy have done their sums!

We also need a slight change to boundary extension infront of old scoreboard due to angle of the boundary edge there.

How can brown stained wood be considered appropriate? It is a monstrous carbuncle, completely out of keeping and proportion of its surroundings.

Clarence Parker
26/06/2015 18:27
"Out of keeping" with what, cricketharris?

In my opinion, the only building architecturally worthy of note to a county cricket ground is the 'Colin Atkinson Pavilion.'

The Ian Botham Stand is bland, the Ondaatje Pavilion gives the impression from a distance of another 'Morrisons' Supermarket, the Trescothick and Somerset Stands are simply terraced rows of seats, and the Andy Caddick Pavilion is another carbuncle which would appear to be more suitably put to use as a Yacht Club HQ on an estuary somewhere.

And yes, the new building is another carbuncle which likewise would (again in my opinion) not look out of place on a Racecourse.

However, as it replaces the 'Old Pavilion' which was constructed entirely of wood, I felt that by cladding some of it with wood would be the minimum recognition of what stood on the site before.

Not much, I know.

And my views on its design were made clear to the club before contracts were signed.

cricketharris
26/06/2015 20:49
Its proportions are my main objection, it being twice as high as what seems to me to be asthetically pleasing. Now the scaffolding is coming down the full effect of its hotch-potch design is more evident. It doesn't fit into its background or surrondings.

The Architects website mock up shows what appears to be a TV camera deck directly below the media box and then tables and chairs on the reamining'patio' area. It could well be a mini version of the Old Trafford's Point?

The mock up also shows a much less sauna like stain on the wood cladding that has been a topic of discussion. I note on twitter that a specialist is carrying out the wood cladding rather then the main contractor. I would suspect that the wood will weather from its current colour to a more subtle colour over time

Yes Mike, I heard the same last week, but not sure it matters that much now, must say workmen do not seem to be in a rush to finish, so imagine no penalty clause built into the contract, but it will give the grass area in front of the works to recover.

The Pavilion looks inoffensive/unremarkable.

The media centre, frankly, looks daft to me - almost as though it was an afterthought (although we know, of course, that it was not).

Edited to add that unless any given game is being played on a pitch some way over towards the flats side of the ground, then isn't the media centre also in the wrong place? Aren't the media centres normally as close to being behind the arm as possible? Which would mean that the media centre should be further to the left (as we look at the photo) for most of our pitches?

AGod
16/09/2015 17:22
I think it's a disgrace that the WACA is being phased out and the height of stupidity on the part of Cricket Australia in terms of reducing their home advantage.

Drop-in pitches, IMO, tend to be somewhat flat and bland. In which case it's not clear how they would help us.

Clarence Parker
16/09/2015 19:59
I have seen 'drop in pitches' being put into place at the MCG, Melbourne.

They are cultivated off site before being transported to the ground, which is of course a multi - sport stadium. The investment is huge and requires heavy and very expensive equipment to complete their insertion.

They cannot just be rolled up and placed in a carpet - layers van to be transported. I doubt that the technology will ever be used on English Test Match grounds, and as for Taunton, well that is laughable.

Scrumper
16/09/2015 20:43
I thought drop-in pitches were meant for multi-sports grounds where they don't have a permanent square.

As for the pavilion, if you think it looks alright without sheets covering part of it, then you'll have to wait until next summer's Lionel Richie concert.

Back in 2002 there was, I understand, an MCC trial of drop-in pitches on the Nursery Ground.

I can find no record of any official 'verdict,' on the trial but we can surely surmise (from the fact that drop-ins were never used on the main square) that the results were deemed insufficiently favourable by Mick Hunt and co.

i. 743 tiered seats at ground level (324 of which are covered)
ii. 195 seats to the first floor facilities (64 of which are covered).
iii. 374 tiered seats at second floor level (336 of which are covered).

The 1875 club (the year the club was formed) is priced around £1,000 per year, restricted to around 100 members, last I heard its was 90% sold out, but that could have changed.

Clarence Parker
12/11/2015 12:37
How can it be "90% sold out" Roger, when to the best of my knowledge it hasn't even been advertised to members?

Roger ivanhoe
12/11/2015 12:56
Clarence, it was offered to Long Room founders first, then to platinum Long Room members, prior to the start of last season, the deal was 3 years upfront one of which was LR membership for the 2015 season plus two years membership of the new Somerset pavilion (2016 and 2017).

I am sure the club office will clarify if needed.

So the Stragglers Coffee Shop (a sad reincarnation) is going to be open every day throughout the year from 8 till 6 (4 on Sundays). Is it me or is that a very expensive joke? Who on earth do they think is going to use it other than on match days, of course.
Maybe it's to try to stop the players going off to Coffee#1 or Costa, I suppose. Some hope.

Roger ivanhoe
29/11/2015 20:36
Cricketharris it rather a shame you have to take another opportunity to criticise the club development before it is open.

The club pay business rates 365 days a year, so why not utilise the facilities.

If the club can get it right from the start I see no reason why it will not attract regular punters, 20% discount for members also.

I intend to give it a try.

Have the club given up the use of 'The Twelfth Man' on the Theatre side of the ground?

It was, I believe, originally open on match days only, but then latterly open at other times as well. I can't imagine that the club would run two similar premises nearby to one another.

Pete Trego tweets highly of the new coffee shop.

cricketharris
30/11/2015 12:32
Bobstan, If it was not possible to make a go of Twelth Man, (which was arguably in a better position to get some passing trade), even on match days it is very difficult to see how the new Stragglers will be a success out-of-season. I hope you, and Peter Trego, patronise it regularly. It will need it to pay the bills. I don't want my club to squander my money.

Tom Seymour
30/11/2015 12:43
The Twelfth Man is definitely in a better postion to attract passing trade. Will users of the Stragglers have to pay to park in the ground before they can use it? If so, it is unlikely to do well unless it is let out for evening functions or the like because you can't move for coffee shops in Taunton nowadays.

I hope the club did some market research on this, but I somehow doubt it.

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

Bobstan
30/11/2015 14:23
cricketharris, It was Trego who spoke highly of the new facility, not I. Don't shoot the messenger; I merely reported the fact.

It does seem to me to be unlikely to attract any passing trade on non-match days as virtually nobody passes, except Mike TA1. Only local committed supporters will be easy to attract. It will need to provide outstanding service, food and drink so that 'word of mouth' then gradually builds up custom. Difficult.

I have to admit with great shame that I am unlikely to come from Hertfordshire for my morning coffee.

Mike TA1
30/11/2015 15:31
There are a lot of people living further down the road towards the new bypass roundabout at the end of Priory Avenue. a lot of them will pass the ground going into town.

knowing the club I am sure there will be some sort of advertising for it. The trouble with the Twelfth Man it wasn't open enough days for the public, people were finding it closed on some days of the week.

Bobstan
30/11/2015 16:06

30/11/2015 17:45
A lot of people use the Car Park on non match day, Coffee and a snack before or after going into town, just the job.

If the club offer free Wi-Fi within the unit it will also attract reps etc.

Tom Seymour
30/11/2015 18:23
People do use the car park on the majority of days in the year when there is no cricket, Roger ivanhoe, but they have to pay to do so, and you have got to entice them to park there before they venture into the town to shop.

Fine for match days but if the club couldn't make a success of the Twelfth Man, then I doubt whether this will last long at all.

I will reserve final judgement until I have visited next week.

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

The car park is always busy it is the cheapest parking in the town (at the moment). A steward was on duty for part of today checking that they had all paid.

Roger ivanhoe
30/11/2015 21:33
Mike, I can imagine a steward is likely to be on duty more often off season once the Café/Bistro is open.
To my mind the club have a captive customers with the car park outside, plus footfall going past the JW Gates and with the soon loss of the Lidl free Car Park on the bridge, people will be looking for a cheap alternative for parking.
While I am not sure the footfall going past the Twelve man was that great, I felt the club were only using it as a short term measure to cover the loss of the Old Pavilion facilities and thus did not promote or go to town on it.

Some People said the expenditure on the CA Pavilion was a waste of money, how they have been proved wrong, as seen in the breakdown of the profits over the past few years.

Time will tell of course.

Mike TA1
30/11/2015 22:34

And when the Brewhouse car park also goes, there will be a good business opportunity for somebody to buy a bit of land and set up a car park.

Not just yet Shepton Paul 2, it's within the revised "Vision of Taunton" plans, to be replaced with Arts and Restaurant's and more shops, seems what they really want is a traffic free Taunton where people will use Public transport, Park and Ride or bicycles.

If the proposals for this, the Firepool development, and other ideas are instigated then Taunton will have an overload of Restaurants.

Anyone can park on the County Ground car park on non match days, at a lower rate than nearby car parks.

Visited the new Stragglers coffee house today and thought that the choice of food, service and prices were pretty good. However it seemed in my view to lack atmosphere compared to the Twelfth Man and I found the room layout unattractively functional.Early days I know, but given the competition in town off-season it will need to address this if it's going to attract and grow custom. (Incidentally,I find the bar area of the Colin Atkinson pavilion similarly uninspiring)

Roger ivanhoe

The few times I visited the Twelfth Man last season I came away disappointed always felt it was a just a temporary unit and treated as such.

Certainly not the case after visiting the Stragglers Coffee house, good quality seating, Food was good, Staff helpful and enthusiastic, table service, 20% discount for members, reasonable range of food, but felt they might need to add a couple of additional hot items to the current Menu, (Pasta, Sausage and Mash maybe).

Thanks for the pictures, SJB. Looks a bit too high for me - are the seats on the right, as you look out to the pitch, right next to a sheer drop? I had a similar seat at Twickenham once, and couldn't sit there as it made me feel physically sick. This isn't as high, but may be too much for me, near the edge.

Otherwise: lovely.
