Max returns to the team in dim and drizzle ladened conditions at home as we welcome Hampshire and Shahid Afridi in another guise for another county, along with Gareth Andrewdoing the same. Not expected to start on time but it does...whether it will finish with a 20 over game is yet to be seen.

I'm coming into this at the 10 over stage of the Hampshire innings and it looked good with Max Waller taking two excellent wickets in the eleventh and the visitors is lots of trouble at 76 for 5 .
However Dawson and that man Afridi start to motor before Max fools Afridi, in an over where he has gone for 16, by taking a gambke and floating another up and bowling him at 124 for 7. Max finishes on 4 0 33 4 - half of which came in ovef 4. Well played sir.
Dawson strolls down to the River end on a call and finds he's doing it a little slowly because by the time he grounds his bat Myburgh picks up and takes out the one stump and it's 125 for 8. Then we have rainand we are off with 16.3
We have to finish by 6:15 so we can have a 5 over reply at 5:55....at the worst. We don't lose anything for an hour
We are back on at 4:20 with no change in overs Darren Sami (0) and Gareth Berg (0) face 3.3 overs and by the end of the over its 126 for 8. Sami is on a mission but is hitting little. Jamie Overton is on for the 19th and Sami smacks the ball like a bullet straight into Allenby's gut at extra cover 132 for 9. Tino Best drops one into Gayles bucket hands at mid wicket and Hants are all out for 133 with 9 balls to spare.

Best to Gayle and the first is four byes!! Then 4 leg byes as the ball swings massively away. Wide. It's moving a long way. The first ball goes for a single. Allenby puts his second away for four off the pace of the ball reallyand we have 14 off the first one. Berg opens the account from the River end. Gayle gets off the mark in his last innings with a hobbled single... is he fit? Allenby then flat bats the ball straight to Afridi at extra cover and we are 15 for 1. In comes Pete Trego. 18 for 1 after 2T
The third over is a Tino Best maiden until the Jamaican takes 2 off the last ball. In the 4th Darren Sami gets Pete to top edge one into the midfield and that is the end of him at 28. Jaywardene joins his international partner as Gareth Berg changes ends for the 5th and we have a game at 37 for 2 - 4 ahead of the D/L with Gayles first boundary after 13 balls.
Hampshire put on Tino to try and get a wicket but his first ball goes for a Gayle six into the Somerset Stand. It is very dim and drizzly and Somerset are 9 ahead of the D/L requirement. The D/L is changing every ball but with a Mahela boundary we are still ahead of it. 48 for 2 after 6 with a D/L at 38.
Afridi takes the 7th and is driven for 50 off the second ball and we move on to 52. Dawson is on and the ball is in the CA car park ball 1.
Gayle goes from nonchalant wafts at balls to huge sixes into car parks ball by ball. One minute he's nowhere near the ball and then dismisses one over the O Ondaatje like it was nothing. He's moved on to 42 and you are not sure where they came from - another boundary takes him to within 4 of a farewell half ton. At 10 Somerset are on 82 - 22 ahead of the rate.
Mahela joins in with a sublime six into the Tribute tent off Afridi. Gayle's 50 comes up in 37 balls (4xfour and 3xsix) as we move to 94 after 11. 40 off 9 overs.
Will Smith takes the 12th and he bowls CG (off pole out of the ground)for 52. He leaves to a standing ovation at 95 for 3. In comes Myburgh. Jayawardene brings up the 100 with a cheeky 2 past the keeper. The rain is belting down now but MJ is putting on a batting masterclass of sublety and sheer class. Dawson changes ends and after 13 it is 112 for 3.
Afridi then changes ends and MJ plays him the same way looking for angles and taking the boundaries. Johann is also looking for the angles and getting the same results. 127 for 3 with 2 balls of the 15th left. With a lofted four off the last we need 2 to win. Berg to Myburgh for the 16th. A defensive shot, a mistimed pull, a wicket as JM is bowled, losing the top of leg, Gregory hits the winning four and it's done and dusted. Excellent game that I would have predicted could not have happened based ont he weather this morning. Excellent management by the umpires (well done George Burns and Steve O'Shaughnessy) and good entertainment for a very impressive crowd.

Back 'in country' 4 days and I am not yet totally sick of the alien concept of rain. But this drizzly non cricket weather can go away in short jerky movements any time it likes. Today's game looks in danger from Bicknoller Towers at 8 this morning. Is it a 5:30 start? Not sure whether later gives it a better or worse chance of happening.

At the ground it has been drizzling since early morning (except for short breaks)and I would be surprised if there is much, if any, cricket played or (just as importantly) beer drunk this afternoon. This hasn't prevented a faithful few queuing to get in since 9 o'clock, bless them.

If it were a championship game play may well have been abandoned for the day by now, but i suspect they will still try to get something on for this. Stopped raining 30 minutes ago, sky still leaden and occasional light drizzle so nothing drying.
Sounds like there is pace and bounce in this deck which implies that Tino Best may prove a real handful on this.

Well the light is not brilliant but the game has got to 10 overs and we would have taken 73 for 5 at that point. But the light is not going to get better that is for sure so we need to keep it going. Waller had a lovely stumping and a dead straight LBW in the first over I got to see so I'm presently happy.

It's not Max Waller taking the wickets but Will Beer, according to the appallingly careless commentator. He was told of his mistakle but continues to make it. If I knew who he was, I would ensure I identified him incorrectly.

Afridi was wearing Gareth's jumper and we don't have scoresheets so I took a leap of faith. Silly me.
The comment about Gareth A was directed at the commentators on Radio Bristol, Grockle. I understand now how they got it wrong.

Hampshire done for 133. Jim holds to a tracer from Sami and Gayle falls forward to pouch Tino Best. Decent bowling performance from us.
Well D/L will do nothing but favour us in this one, Grockle, so would not be an acceptable reason should we fail to close the deal.
Our over paid non committed player fresh from the local night club seems to handling this situation nicely.

Today's win suggests to me what a pity it was to omit Waller from Friday's match. He is a real talisman.
That match was, according to my records, Somerset's 160th competitive T20 match and the first in which no former Millfield pupil has appeared. I am indifferent as to whether Tom Seymour will be indifferent as to that little gem.

Nope, Chunky, there is plenty of comment re:individual player failings when the team loses and/or plays poorly.

Botham's point about Max not playing on Friday seems very relevant after today's performance. He may not be sure which delivery he is going to bowl each ball but neither has the batsmen and he completely bamboozled more than one today.
If only we could find him another 6 overs of solid stock balls.

The New Pavilion? Well it's FOUR flights of stairs to the press box so it was a bit of a surprise. Great view but very high. Didn't get into the Stragglers....may do that tomorrow - looks OK. the balcony is interesting but everything was smaller than I expected. It wasn't particularly nice because of the weather but it does have a 'mini me' sort of impression. You think the press facilities are larger but they aren't because there are two commentary areas inside that 'garden box' affair AND the scorers so the press box is actually smaller than the old one - or seems that way.
I didn't go anywhere near the "18 whatever it is" club on the middle floor.
Overall? It's certainly newer than what it replaced but it isn't massively impressive as a replacement but it's.....OK...a little "non plussed" to be honest.

The posting 'Botham' suggested there was a place for Max during his posts on the Glos game the other day LoL. He also twittered about it today/yesterday I believe. But you made roughly the same points.
Clearly a case of great minds thinking alike.
As for the Millfield statistics... I keep similar records of the county players who attended the same grammar school as I did, though none of them seems to have played for Somerset.

So, happy to sacrifice the pleasure of attending and pleased to report she enjoyed the day (despite the weather). As such, SCCC have two new converts to the virtues of cricket(even if in it's most base form !).
In any event, there certainly doesn't seem to be anything to complain about re our performance today anyway.
Will be interesting to see what happens next to one day team selection, particularly re Max W. and Adam Hose.
I would think credit also to all concerned for managing to complete the game in such lousy conditions.

Interesting Grockle, I thought there was a lift to the third floor, but you obviously took the Healthy Option.
There is a lift but I started up the stairs deceived by the height of the pavilion itself. You get a great view of the Quantocks from the top.. I am told that there are 71 steps to the box by people there who are now members of the Pavilion's "71 Club" it seems.
The 1875 club Grockle, the year the club was established evidently.
The day I went up on the Members viewing days I also found it very high, and extremely windy and cold.

The press have dubbed the press box the 71 Club Roger after the number of stairs they have to climb to reach it.
This seems to have been a professional performance, with very good bowling and fielding. Perhaps the most surprising thing was that a full game was completed.
I have no connection with Millfield. But I can still recognise that LoL's statistic is remarkable and, indeed, a gem.

Fair comment, but perhaps what is termed nowadays as a "Political answer"?
At least 2, but maybe there are more, old boys from my school played county cricket for a county other than Somerset. I share their pride particularly in view of the standard of education and lack of any suitable facilities.

I absolutely love the terrace bit of the New Pav. The surroundings are totally civilised, you can get right behind the arm just like in the Old Pav (pace Scyld Berry), and you have that gorgeous view of the Quantocks in the background.
In a further nostalgic reminiscence of the Old Pav, you still have the crosswind which chills your pint nicely while stripping the flesh from the fingers holding it.
My main reservation is the little bar which only sells beer and cider in cans.
(I wish they'd found a more interesting name than "Somerset Pavilion", though - and "Somerset Pavilion End" strikes me as both prosaic and long-winded. If consulted, I would have gone for "Churchyard End".)

Having had a coffee with Mike in the Stragglers this afternoon I have to say that is a nice space. Though I would have liked to have seen a view of the pitch (though it seems it is shown via video link). It is good to have an area called 'The Stragglers' again, brings back memories of some old friends, Pat, Tony and of course Bill - who still knows. That should be on the wall in there.
The amount of sitting the press do they need that cardiovascular exercise!
I too am disappointed by the name, especially as I have found having a Somerset Pavilion and a Somerset Stand causes some confusion to occasional visitors to the ground. I would have called it the St James end.
I would have chosen The Town End but St James End would have done nicely. And The St James' Stand.

I despair at the lack of imagination. During Richard Gould's tenure I wrote suggesting the new stand below the flats should be called the Woods & Wellard Stand but got no response.
I have now decided that the next all seater area to be created should be called
The Somerset Sit.
The Somerset Slump and The Somerset Collapse in a Heap will follow.

I guess that's another thing that Radio Solent got wrong then. They were complaining that the end where the new stand is was still being referred to as the "Old Pavilion End," in spite of the shiny new building that stands there. I assumed that they meant that it was being referred to in the context of tannoy announcements re: bowling.

The main point I think its a Pavilion rather than a Stand,
With that in mind when using for a function. the club would not want to describe it,
as the Stand at the St James End, or the Building at the Graveyard End.
I much prefer the Somerset Pavilion branding, to having it known under the name of a Corporate Company.

In one of the first 'in house' ball by ball commentaries we did, from outside Mr Gould's office in the CA at the time, when the Gimblets was first finished Richard suggested on air that the end should be called the 'Dead End' seeing that it was in front of the graveyard and built on dubious foundations.
Slightly uncharitable references to the press AG seeing as the days of the cricket lunch have gone, the majority of those who still have jobs are getting on these days and without their contributions you for one would be pushed to get the information you analyse to death as you read and listen to them far more than you watch the side live.
Never mind though, they might stay alive as there is a lift.

According to the Beeb ones that provide the radio commentary, they are still (as a rule) extremely partial to their cricket lunch, Grockle. Certainly, the content of said lunches tends to get an awful lot of air time..
To answer my own question about replacing Gayle in the T20 side, I think that I would like to see them give another few goes to Michael Leask, in the XI, as he seems to have played a number of hugely explosive innings in the seconds (in white ball games).
Not suggesting for one moment that Leask should open the innings, but they could open with JA and PT and insert ML in the middle order somewhere, IMO.

Press lunches at Taunton ain't what they used to be ever since the club decided the press could only partake of their lunches in the Colin Atkinson after 1.45pm; not ideal fir the written press and would make for a very quiet opening to the afternoon session for those listening on the Beeb. With the new Stragglers also off limits due to its popularity its the bacon butty bar or the chippy stall these days.

Whether they also procure lunch for their co-commentators whilst they are there (or simply tuck in themselves and then do the commentary stint immediately after lunch), I do not know.

It's just a good deal for the supporters and popular. The club did their best to provide something to the press guys but in the end there wasn't room.
I do find it amusing that people see this as some kind of over the top 'perk' rather than a way of allowing people who have only the 40 minute break in their working day to get something to eat. The old style view of the working member of the sports press is very different from the present job description of the average sports journalist.
Besides the fact that many of them are there before the beginning of the game because they have travelled in to the venue rather than having hotel accommodation as used to be the case for their predecessors. Some may start their day at 6am or before on some train station. They are also usually there after the game has finished, whenever that may be and then may have to make their way back from whence they came before being off somewhere else in the early hours of the next day.
While working they may be reporting on a game while managing an online website and producing other material for their publication during the gaps in the game reporting.
They get the same breaks as the players in the day.
Their jobs are no more secure (in fact probably less) than other forms of profession. If they do manage to keep their job it seems a constant trend of same pay more work every year. The immediate aspect of their work now means they can be asked to produce something on demand with very little time to get it organised.
I really don't think a decent meal in the day is a 'perk' or anything that should be referred to as if it is some kind of 'theft' from the club for doing very little.
The gentleman journalist is a thing of the past. There are perks in the job for the sport loving man/woman but they earn their money if they are any good and although there still seems to be an amount of jealousy for the things they experience during the job they do I doubt many appreciate how difficult it is now to make a living from this in the way it used to be.
And if you are a professional photographer then 71 steps is a decent pull for guys who have all the professional gear. So give then a bit of respect aye? We want their product but it seems that some are a little jealous that they get to produce it
I do find it amusing that people see this as some kind of over the top 'perk' rather than a way of allowing people who have only the 40 minute break in their working day to get something to eat. The old style view of the working member of the sports press is very different from the present job description of the average sports journalist.
Besides the fact that many of them are there before the beginning of the game because they have travelled in to the venue rather than having hotel accommodation as used to be the case for their predecessors. Some may start their day at 6am or before on some train station. They are also usually there after the game has finished, whenever that may be and then may have to make their way back from whence they came before being off somewhere else in the early hours of the next day.
While working they may be reporting on a game while managing an online website and producing other material for their publication during the gaps in the game reporting.
They get the same breaks as the players in the day.
Their jobs are no more secure (in fact probably less) than other forms of profession. If they do manage to keep their job it seems a constant trend of same pay more work every year. The immediate aspect of their work now means they can be asked to produce something on demand with very little time to get it organised.
I really don't think a decent meal in the day is a 'perk' or anything that should be referred to as if it is some kind of 'theft' from the club for doing very little.

Yes Roger I'm sure the carvery went due to constraints on space rather than shortage of Yorkshires.
In these days when comprehensive county coverage can be difficult to find in even the broadest of the broadsheet newspapers anything that helps journalists and the broadcast media look favourably - and then comment favourably - on Taunton is to be encouraged.
A decent meal isn't a 'perk,' in and of itself, Grockle, but if you do not have to pay for said decent meal it then that would be considered a 'perk,' by any normal definition of the term.
Note: I'm not making any comment as to whether or not such a perk should or should not have been withdrawn, although one can see why - from a commercial point of view, the club would rather have 100% paying punters in the lunch queue.

I returned to the Stragglers today for lunch with two friends, it was very busy today with four tables reserved for a group from some organization.
It is good seeing the Stragglers doing so well.

I did think with the availability of the Stragglers Café this year, it would have an effect on the County Room, but this does not seem to be the case.

Any form of media coverage is to be encouraged by the club, I was once told any mention of Somerset cricket is a way of advertising Somerset Cricket Club, even this web site does that.

What is all this talk about the 71 steps? Surely the press, scorers etc aren't banned from using the lift at the other end of the building and then just staggering up just a few steps from there.
I don't know why I want to prolong the talk about the naming of ends but there is no more reason for the St James End to be called after the pavilion there than the River End being called the Ian Botham Stand End.
I wonder why the club won't occasionally ask its beloved members for their opinions on such matters or even, in LoL's case just reply to his suggestion. They presumably don't care what we think even in such relatively unimportant matters. It's not as if we want to pick the team or sack the DoC for goodness sake.

My rationale for suggesting playing him on Thur was as follows:
A) Do we have any opener in our squad likely to achieve the same overall strike-rate across the competition as Gayle?
Answer: Probably not.
Same question applied to people outside the recent T20 first XI?
Answer: almost certainly not.
C) What are we left with?
My answer would be that what we have to do is simply pick the guy that we think most likely to be able to achieve a high strike-rate at *any* stage of our innings.
I think ML's returns in short-form second XI stuff imply that he may be our best bet - hopefully he might manage a strike-rate of 125-130 or so coming in at six or seven.

I don't know. I think Leask has played only once or twice. I don't think he made many but I have no idea what his strike-rate was. For example, If Leask made a total of 11 runs off 7 balls his strike-rate would be better than AH's.
I checked - no idea what the SCCC figures are but in all first-team T20 games, Hose does have the better strike - rate but Adam has played only once.
In List A first team games, AH has a SR of 78 And ML more than 100. But ML has played none of those games for SCCC.
