Bob Willis Trophy Final 2020 ~ Somerset v Essex ~ A dimpsy day

All Bob Willis Trophy matches are being played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus restrictions in place. This report was therefore written following a day watching the ECB’s enhanced live stream of the match, without which this report would not have been possible. The stream was watched with the commentary muted and with notes being taken to enable the author to replicate as far as possible his experience of watching matches live.

Bob Willis Trophy Final. Somerset v Essex. 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th September 2020. Lord’s.

Somerset. B.F.G. Green, T.A. Lammonby, T.B. Abell (c), E.J. Byrom, G.A. Bartlett, S.M. Davies (w), L. Gregory, C. Overton, J.H. Davey, M.J. Leach, J.A. Brooks.

Essex. N.L.J. Browne, Sir Alistair Cook, T. Westley (c), D.W. Lawrence, P.I. Walter, R.N. ten Doeschate, A.J.A. Wheater, S.R. Harmer, A.P.Beard, S.J. Cook, J.A. Porter.

Toss. Essex. Elected to field.

Somerset have been here before, or somewhere near. In 2008, 2010, 2016 and again in 2019 they began the final match of the first-class season with a realistic prospect of winning their first County Championship. In the end of course, the trophy went elsewhere. 2020 is not quite the same. This is not the County Championship. The Bob Willis Trophy is a much-truncated affair in comparison with the County Championship. Six matches instead of 14. Not all the stronger teams played each other, and no team played another on a home and away basis. And, at the crunch, the first-class domestic trophy is to be decided in a five-day grand final played at Lord’s.

And yet, in a year in which sport has been decimated as part of the attempts to control the coronavirus pandemic, it is a wonder that a national competition of four-day cricket has taken place at all, let alone been pursued to a conclusion. And, in spite of all, the two strongest four-day teams in the land, and the ones who contested the 2019 County Championship so closely are the ones to have progressed to Lord’s. This is a match, and a trophy, worth the winning.

Essex drew first blood by winning the toss on what appeared to be, to use a West Country term, a dimpsy day. Lord’s. Post-equinoxal September. Low cloud. Dimpsy light. 10.30 start. The more fatalistic among Somerset supporters would have expected no more than to lose the toss on such a day. And none would have expected Essex to do other than ask Somerset to bat. The more optimistic would remember that every day of this match will start at 10.30, be played in late September and that Somerset have the pace attack to take advantage of the conditions.

The cricket, for the most part, reflected the conditions: intense, often grim defence, against persistently accurate bowling. On one occasion six overs passed without a run being scored. At times it seemed the batsmen’s stroke of choice was the thick edge. Essex employed a third man and he was gainfully employed converting boundaries into singles the whole day long. There seemed to be more often four slips than three as Essex searched for wickets. “This has the feel of a 50 for 5 sort of morning,” said the incoming text early in the proceedings. It was difficult to mount a convincing argument against it for Somerset started this match in those dimpsy conditions with the most inexperienced top five they have had for some years. The opening batsmen have nine first-class matches between them. The Essex opening pair have 403. With James Hildreth absent with a hamstring injury, Alistair Cook has more than twice as many first-class matches to his credit than do the entire Somerset top five.

As Somerset supporters gathered in front of their screens such thoughts, especially after Essex had won the toss, would have twirled around in their minds and the anticipation which the approach of this match had generated would have been tinged with apprehension. More than tinged when, with his third ball Sam Cook hit Tom Lammonby on the pad. Lammonby, Somerset’s youngest, but most in form batsman. It was a quick, full delivery which struck Lammonby right in front of the stumps. There was not a run on the board. The Somerset heart sank before the umpire’s finger was raised and the Essex players celebrated with one of those signs of these coronavirus times, touched fists, elbows and heels.

Tom Abell, the only remotely experienced batsman in Somerset’s top five, joined Ben Green. Somerset’s first runs came when Abell played straight to Cook. He got a thick edge, and as his head flicked around towards backward point to locate the ball it rolled over the boundary. In the same over Abell played a beautifully classic cut shot, this time the batsman’s eyes and the camera anticipating the direction of the ball as it sped towards the point boundary. Those two strokes were harbingers of much of what was to follow. The conditions would be a challenge to the batsman and an opportunity for the bowler if the discipline of maintaining a line and length which continually threatened the top of the off stump was sustained. For the online Somerset crowd, and no doubt the Essex one, it was unlikely to be a restful day ‘at’ the cricket.

Green responded to the bowling and the conditions with dogged defence and the occasional pushed single. He began to settle the Somerset watcher’s anxieties as, the inevitable thick edge apart, he kept the bowlers out as Abell began to score. When Abell leaned confidently into an on drive off Porter it did not leave the ground on its way to the midwicket boundary. Green responded with an equally classical on drive to the long on boundary. But neither batsman looked secure for long. An edge short of slip off Cook from Abell and a yorker from Porter, only just dug out by Green, but which netted a fortuitous run for Somerset must have caused sharp intakes of breath from both sets of supporters in the online crowd.

When Green turned Beard square to the boundary in front of the vast, empty Grandstand the Somerset mind was beginning to settle. The bowling was still testing the batsmen, and the score had only reached 29, but crucially only one wicket had fallen. A base was being established. The ball too was being more firmly struck, although often straight to the fielder. Then, a cut, with arms held high, to the Tavern Stand by Abell off Beard left no doubt as to its provenance. It was, as they say, four the moment it left the bat. The classical stroke, peremptorily played, is Abell’s forte. The leg glance is not. He has been caught down the leg side playing it more times than a loyal supporter should have to bear. On this occasion it was to an exceptional catch by Wheater, but the gasps of infuriation must have been audible in front of Somerset screens far and wide as the confirmation that Somerset were 34 for 2 appeared on the screen. “The problem with scoring slowly is that if you make a mistake there are no runs on the board,” pointed out the incoming text.

As if in response, Green and Byrom began to attack the bowling, Beard in particular, as the mixture of middled and edged strokes continued unabated. Byrom drove him through midwicket for four, Green hooked him for three, Byrom was surprised by some lift and edged him for two. Green edged Cook wide of fourth slip and the ball ran to the boundary. When Harmer joined the attack the two young batsmen immediately fell back on defence and just played the ball back down the pitch to him. They were beginning to generate some confidence in the watching Somerset crowd, at least in this member of it, when Cook bowled perhaps the ball of the day. It pitched just outside Green’s off stump, his bat came forward to defend against it, the ball cut in, perhaps shaved the inside edge and hit the off stump. “That’s the Lord’s hill,” said the incoming text, renaming the Lord’s slope in the process. Indeed it was. Green had batted for an hour and a half for those 24 runs in difficult batting conditions and it had taken a ball of that calibre to dismiss him. Somerset’s young men were showing some fight, but at 52 for 3 Essex’s bowlers were demonstrating skill, persistence and discipline and they were edging the contest.

Somerset were under pressure and the gathering clouds that the camera picked out above the Pavilion added to the mood. Byrom responded in the traditional Somerset way. Supported by Bartlett, he attacked the bowling, and he attacked it with effect. He steered Cook wide of fourth slip for four and drove Beard through square leg to the Grandstand boundary with perfect timing for another four. In one over, he drove Beard three times with beautifully flowing strokes which had the ball hugging the grass all the way to the boundary. The first was an off drive to the Pavilion, the second was driven through the on side to the Warner Stand, and the third majestically through the covers to the Tavern Stand, perhaps the most unlikely of silent stands in the country. In pre-COVID times those three strokes would have identified every Somerset supporter in the ground as they applauded and cheered Byrom on. As it was, those supporters would have been willing, or cheering, him on from far and wide. A cover drive off Harmer took Somerset to lunch on 90 for 3. Byrom had perhaps restored parity, or something close to it.

And then came the rain that those gathering clouds and dimpsy light had been threatening. It delayed the restart. When the players eventually emerged, Byrom and Bartlett entered into a tunnel of maidens from which only Byrom emerged. Against Cook and Porter ball after ball was played back to the bowler or to a fielder. Once, Bartlett attempted to cut Porter, the ball took the under edge and bounced halfway to the slips. When he attempted to drive him he was caught by Alistair Cook at slip, Somerset were 94 for 4 and in some jeopardy.

Steven Davies joined Byrom and again Somerset set about rebuilding their position. In two short passages of play either side of another rain break the pair negotiated their way to 119 for 4 before the rain came for a third time and ended play for the day. It did not make for restful watching. In getting to the close both batsmen played and missed, both edged a boundary to third man, and both played some exquisite strokes. Davies played the deftest of steers to the third man boundary and a square drive for two. Byrom also played a square drive off Porter for two and a straight drive off Cook to the Nursery End boundary. He ended on 51 not out. It was an innings which kept Somerset in touch with Essex, one that would have attracted extended applause in an earlier year, an innings for which some would have stood to applaud.

Byrom’s assault on Beard apart it had been a grimly fought half day of cricket. In one sense, cricket as dimpsy as the light. But if you were a supporter of either side it would have gripped your attention like a vice. In terms of the balance of the match at the close, that might best be summed up by the fact that Somerset were in more urgent need of runs than Essex were of wickets, or perhaps by the text that read, “Essex think they are on top. They didn’t want to go off when it rained.”

Close. Somerset 119 for 4.

I trust all will agree that this match deserved a thread of its own.

A bit feeble of me, I know, but I've tried five sites and have yet to find one that specifies the date of the match.

Right, how do we get to watch it live? Hire a hot-air balloon or blimp for five days and keep it tethered with a good view point? Any takers?

Failing that, I'll watch the livestream though I find it very stressful!

What would the great Bob Willis have made of his trophy final not been shown on tv? Imagine his demeanour as at Headingley 1981, eyes glazed with massive intensity bowling fearsomely at the tv producers

I think I find it more stressful watching on TV/livestream than live, when you actually have a 'feel' for the game. I even found the RLODC final last year quite stressful on TV, even though it was very much a done deal for a lot of the game.

My favourite live game - or one of my favourites - was Sussex vs Somerset in the 83 Nat West Trophy. All over early in the afternoon giving me time for a dip in the sea. Result!

Exactly one of the main reasons I detest watching any sport on TV, I'd 100% rather be at the game than watching on TV
Sky have confirmed that they are covering IPL / Womens cricket on the same day.
In addition SKY have said that due to two stands being knocked down at Lords there is insufficient space to install the required cameras, so unless BBC take it on the red button we are going to be struggling for coverage

Why have the final at Lords in the first place if it’s a building site. Be much better to have it at the ground of the highest place team i.e. Taunton!

The E C B aren't the only ones who 'have it in' for Somerset, because some posters consider that the whole World is a massive conspiracy against Somerset County Cricket Club.

I don’t think the club will have any real choice or options for the final which is why we have to pray nobody is injured in the thrilling T20 comp.

Hildreth is all but sure to be out. Banton’s away. Leach and Bess likely to be at the England training camp.

So team will be

Green
Lammonby
Abell
Bartlett
Byrom
Davies
LG
Cove
VDM (though he should bat 11)
Scotland’s finest
Brooks

There’s nobody else, with any experience at all, who has a red ball contract and who figures to be available.

There is nothing scheduled for the end of September, why would there be? England are not scheduled to play red ball again until January at the earliest.

There was talk of a red ball camp in UAE maybe in December but no sense in an end of September one (which clashs with the IPL)

Jack & Dom will be available for the final.

I would expect the exact same team as Worcs away for the final personally. Hildy for Green if fit but nothing suggests he is likely to be in 10 days time.

Josh has taken 24 wickets and surely very close to being on the list Bobstan. As a bowler his performance in the BWT was better than Jamie imo, but not as good with the bat. I would have thought Jamie's bowling average was lower than 17, but being with Surrey ruined that

Josh for Jamie in my XI - and if you're going to pick a Somerset bowler for his batting, I'd suggest Jack B deserves it even more than Jamie! (More consistent).
Tom L most unlucky, as they say - to be honest I haven't been following the other groups all that closely, but the stats for the other batsmen are pretty impressive so not getting too partisan on that one. Libby certainly worth a place.
No nominated captain - presumably that would be Tom A?
Harmer will be hoping that they play at Chelmsford.

mikeindex
12/09/2020 14:41
Assuming Dom and Jack L are both available for the final I would quite like to see them both in.
On the other hand, our pace attack have been performing so splendidly that it's hard to leave any of them out.
On the third hand, when you have Abell AND Lammonby as joint-fourth seamer, do you need more than three specialists?
On the fourth hand, does it make sense to leave out Brooks for Green, Byrom or even, if fit, Hildreth, when he's averaging more than twice as many as any of them with the bat?
I am quite intrigued by Mart's idea of opening with Bess so as to fit all the bowlers in. I would not rule it out by any means.
No idea how Lord's is playing this season as there has not been a single day's cricket played there so far - I had hoped to come up with some idea of whether it seemed to be favouring pace or spin.
Oh well.
My XI, if I must:
Davies
Lammonby
Abell
Hildreth (If fit)/Bartlett
Bartlett/Green (if Hildreth unfit)
Gregory
Bess
Overton
Brooks
Davey
Leach
Maybe Green to open and Davies 5 if Hildreth unfit. Some flexibility in positions 6-11.
Yes I know Josh and Jack L are better batsmen technically than Jack B, but the way he's going lately let's get him in a bit earlier and while there's still some solidity behind him.

That Bloke With The Dog

Is it possible Brooks might feel constrained by responsibility if promoted? As things stand, he's the best number 11 in the country, because he knows he has nothing to lose and can bat accordingly.

AGod
12/09/2020 20:32
On the basis of stats alone of batting average 37 and bowling 17, then one can’t blame them for putting Jamie in. In putting him in at 7, they presumably felt he had the best all-round figures and so have included him in that capacity. Cove obviously deserves his place. Tim Murtagh put up very good numbers in a group in which every team, bar *pathetic* Surrey, is arguably better than the other teams in our group.

Somerset LaLaLa
12/09/2020 21:05
Yes, for no 11's Brooks has done very well and gets more runs than Porter. Murtagh has taken a lot of wickets and Crane economical as well. England's best no 11 is of course Jack Leach

Anyone suddenly thinking maybe Will Smeed could be Hildy's replacement in the final. One more knock of 50 or so in the T20 could suddenly push him ahead of Green. What a debut that would be!!!! Definitely a class act in local and seconds cricket and showed today he has the temperament when under pressure

Bagpuss
14/09/2020 00:59
Temperament under pressure and also selflessness in pursuit if the team cause. He could have throttled back a bit and may well have reached 100 on only his second appearance in the first team. Instead he kept his foot to the floor chasing an unlikely victory.

Half a dozen or so years ago we were asking where the batsmen were as a procession of promising bowlers and bowling all rounders had come through the academy to the senior squad. Well now we have Abell, whose rise to the captaincy has been exceptional, Banton and Byrom established first team players, Lammonby who was introduced to first team cricket last season and whose star is rising in recent weeks and now Smeed. There will be others on the Somerset production line too.

All credit to our age group and academy coaches, Somerset's *pathway* is surely one of the best in the country.

Monkey Butler
14/09/2020 16:58
I would replace Byrom with Bartlett in your sentence Bagpuss. I would agree that we have some potential lbatting stars in Smeed, Lammonby, Banton and Bartlett. One thing that has softened the blow of losing two top former academy bowlers is that we are producing some fine batters. Bartlett and Lammonby have shown some real grit in 4 day innings as well.

AGod
14/09/2020 17:22
Agree MB re: Bartlett and Lammonby. Eddie, sadly, isn’t “established,” or - if he is - it has only been through lack of alternatives.

I fear that this season was EB’s final best chance to become a first team regular and he’s failed - as yet - to seize the chance.

As for Tom Banton? He’s kind of by-the-by now, since we shall seldom see him anyway, between IPL and England white ball stuff, the accursed Hundred etc

Will Smeed? Well, it was a very encouraging start and one that seemed to surprise Steve Snell not one iota.

Rarely though he will be available, I don`t see why Tom Banton should be on the way out of Somerset.

Unlike the expense of both Jamie Overton and Dom Bess (as their ECB status stands at the moment), Somerset are having to meet only a miniscule part of Tom`s salary, with the ECB and IPL picking up the bulk.

What a ridiculous overstatement by Cleese.
Most important match in our history? Satisfying as it would be to win it, this is not the County Championship.
The most important match in our history (to date) was, arguably, 2010 at CLS or 2016 v Notts at Taunton, though a case could be made for the 79 Gillette Cup Final.

I doubt we did anything other than confirm ECB permission for Tom to play in the IPL and he would have only returned to us in s real season after his involvement in the 100 debacle.

His county involvement is also by permission from England anyway.I think.

Somerset is the place for him to train and improve on the basics if he wants to focus on the longer format. Tom Banton's average there is 25 and yet to score a century. The other risk is burnout at 21 years old, but hopefully the break during the pandemic has given him the chance to think everything through

cricketharris
17/09/2020 11:57
I can imagine that much of the lack of loyalty these days is generated and promoted by agents who don’t give a fig who their charges are playing for as long as it brings them the most money. Players, in the end, talk of how much they love whichever team they happen to be playing for that week.

AGod
17/09/2020 12:16
I'd be very surprised if Tom Banton were to take a year out to focus on red ball. Nor do I think it would be a sensible decision, from a financial standpoint. After all, the only way one can make loadasmoney from red ball is to get one of the 16-18 or so England central contracts. But there's tons of money to be made from white ball.. and a lot of it isn't in the gift of the ECB.

Realistically, Tom Banton is a million miles away from getting one of said 16-18 central red ball contracts. So it would make little sense for him to focus on that form of the game.

cricketharris
17/09/2020 13:12
So it’s all about the money even at the start of a career.

AGod
17/09/2020 14:01
A young player has to consider how potentially short their career could be... for example... look what happened to Craig K.

Cleese’s tweet was stupid and, I’m afraid, of a piece with much of his recent political stuff (In the sense of being stupid).

Bobstan
17/09/2020 14:26
Totally agree with your second sentence, AG.

However perhaps we should refrain from getting too political on this site, although that becomes more difficult by the week given the world in which we live!

sfwithers
17/09/2020 16:09
I have to echo AGod and Bobstan's thoughts re John Cleese. The once-great comic talent has become a seriously bitter person in his later years. A shame.

I'm well into middle age and can get pretty grumpy myself, but I hope I never reach his level of bitterness. And yes, Tom Banton's career could be over at any point. That's not likely, but as in the case of Kieswetter or, in a totally different way, James Taylor, these things just can not be predicted.

If I was 21 or so and had the chance at achieving financial security for the rest of my life, or a good portion of it, I'd seriously consider it! Though personally of course I'd love him to play at Lords.

Somerset LaLaLa

The ECB also gets 20% (not sure exact figure?) of the overall contract a player has from the IPL and is hardly likely to object

Ah, I see the criticism of John Cleese is as much about his politics. Fancy that.

sfwithers
18/09/2020 10:03
In Cleese's case it's an apparent move towards all-round bitterness and misanthropy, taking in misogyny (widespread accusations), what could be construed as racism, though he argues its culturalism, rather than in the narrow political sense. He just seems to exude a general sense of bitterness and anger with the modern world, which part of me can understand – there's a lot to be angry about, after all – but I hope I don't come across in the same way as him when I'm his age.

I've no idea where on the political spectrum Cleese stands these days - presumably somewhere well over to the right even by modern standards, since it's CH who objects to others criticising his politics (even when they haven't).
I believe he was at one time a big fan of the Liberal Democrats, which strikes me as a bit paradoxical - I mean, how can you be passionately in favour of a political stance of "we feel it very important to squeeze somehow into the tiny gap between two right-wing parties, one slightly more so than the other"?
Be that as it may, all I, for one, ever commented on on this thread was the hyperbole of his comment on the significance of the BWT final in Somerset's history.

I wouldn't be as downbeat as the telegraph writer. Although Hildreth is a quality player, he had shown nothing in the tournament to suggest he had any sort of form. The two sides have very similar batting IMO (both have 4 in the top 50 averages).

The one thing that Essex have that I genuinely worry about, is Harmer. Although our superior pace line up and Jack Leach (hopefully he can shake off the rust) will hopefully make up for that.

The difference is - CJM - that both teams will be batting at 10.30am (most likely). It may not be Essex’s openers and may not be a new ball (in the first innings) but they’ll have to bat early in the day. It maybe that it will be numbers 4 and 5 batting versus a ball that’s about 30 overs old tomorrow morning, but still...

I see no real advantage in bowling here.

There *might* be a case for LG being moved back up into a new ball role, so that he and Brooks share the Nursery End and Cove and Josh The Pavilion End.

That shouldn’t be plan A because of how good Cove and Josh have been... but it should be in mind as a Plan B to which we might turn fairly quickly, IMO.

There's not too much to say, about the others that batted.

I mean, I think it's a pretty good batting track, so we're not obviously in a great position. I think Cove and Davey > Porter and Cook but it's hard to believe that Harmer won't be > a guy who has bowled 8 overs since last November.

Beard looks loose for them. We need to fight, tooth and claw to wear Porter and Cook down to make sure we get into some signficant bowling time from Beard. Harmer would fancy having two LHBs to bowl at under normal circumstances, so it might actually help us, in a funny way, if it's low cloud and stuff tomorrow morning, as Harmer may then not get the nod before EB and SD have had a chance to get in.

Essex 'just' need to ensure a first innings lead, then 'just' require to bat out for a draw to ensure winning the trophy (as 1st innings total decides the winner in a drawn final), especially if the weather hasn't finished intervening. Of course I have every confidence in our bowling unit to take 20 wickets, but it adds another factor to Essex winning the toss. Another Cheddar Valley think.

I seriously think our penalties need reviewing. We have staged a friendly and 2 BWT matches at Taunton without ANY pitch issues. At least, our 'suspended 12 point penalty' could be applied to this season, instead of the season after next (to have our 'actual 12 point penalty' declared null and void would be far too sensible).

AGod
24/09/2020 13:11
The problem is not, necessarily, that we were given a deduction, but rather that Essex got away with it, despite producing the pitches rated by the umpires as the worst in the land (and then had the temerity to force the umpires to report our pitch!)

Yesterday I was tuned into the Sky You Tube coverage on my TV. It was good. The stream was good quality, and the commentary ok.
Today the stream is very stilted, almost animated, so have switched to BBC Red Button overlaid with 5 live Sports Extra commentary. Vic, as ever very good, Simon Mann, Kevin Howells, and is it someone called Norcross? He recounted his visit to a Lord's Gents' convenience, to attend to his requirement at the urinals, then the wash basin, finally to turn and check things in the mirror, only to find there was a notice taped to it which stated 'Do Not Use'!
A brief shower has just swept through Clevedon; not to worry, I got my washing in, and there could only have been a maximum of a 3 minute delay before another Cheddar Valley.

A question for those of you who know more about the technical aspects of cricket than I do (it is a low bar).

Are Essex a front line bowler light for this pitch? Porter and Cook have bowled 50 of the 84 overs to be bowled to date, and the pressure, thus far at least, seems to come off once those two are off. I noticed Cook started his second spell before lunch this morning which also made me wonder. Provided Jack Leach is match fit enough to hold an end for a while might we be able to keep the pressure on for longer than they can? And if we can, might that bring Jack Leach properly into the game?

Bit worrying that Simon Mann reporting that the conference system for 2021 already includes a final later in the year! I don't want to keep harking on about this (and I will), but surely there should have been more consultation? If our Director of Cricket, and the players want to keep the 2 divisions, who from SCCC voted to agree?
I desperately want Somerset to win this BWT, but it is NOT the County Championship. Let's win the CC in a format that I'm still not totally happy with (we should have 2 divs of 9 and play home and away 16 games), then let the ECB do what they want with it. Fiddle with it yet again and it devalues it yet again.

Very well played Eddie and Cove. From here, with another 36 overs for the first innings we should be aiming/hoping for circa 375 total?

I am not sure that there has been any comment here or elsewhere on the matter of the debited twelve points if the conference scheme goes ahead. My view is that the only fair way to implement that wretched decision would be for, say, nine points to be debited during the first ten-match phase of the competition (debiting twelve from only ten matches would seem irrational and unfair), with the remaining three points deducted from the four matches in phase two.

Does that make any sense? And will sense and fairness prevail?

We certainly stuck at it, Grizz.

Really, they were a one-man band despite conditions loaded in their favour.

Not impressed with them, batting wise, Chef apart.

If we’d had them under lights, then I suspect Chef would have made 80 odd and the rest less than that between them.

Maybe a bit unfair on Brooks? His championship record over the last 4 years:

2017/18 for Yorkshire:
Played 21/28 games, 74 wickets at 31

2019/20 for Somerset:
Played 13/21 games, 38 wickets at 26

Career first class record:
Played 132 games, 475 wickets at 27

Considering squad rotation as well, particularly last season, I think he’s contributed pretty well for us.

Hope he can get back on the field today. We’ve done really well to get back in with a squeak. First innings lead obviously would be amazing but still unlikely. We need to be batting by lunch to have any kind of realistic chance.

Really looking forward to these two days. Just hope there is enough play to make it worthwhile. I’ve been too busy in work to watch much of it other than highlight so far. Just hope it isn’t decided on first-inning score because to me that is meaningless; there’s a good reason why we love two innings cricket.

Have to say magnificent performance by Cook. Amazing percentage of his team’s runs while he was there. Big players do so often perform on big occasions. What a pain he is!

Come on Somerset!

All to play for, we're still well in this one. A few quick wickets this morning and I make us favourites. Let's stick it to the chavs.

Rod1883
26/09/2020 09:18
On the basis that when I watch we don't seem to get the breakthrough's and/or luck, and after I set off for a long walk to the Pub just as they came back on after Tea yesterday which seemed to do the trick (along with the new ball of course) - I'm going for a walk this morning in 3/4's of an hour or so. Hoping to get home to a lunch time situation of them all out and us batting well. A small 1st innings lead would be a bonus, please!

Hamez
26/09/2020 09:48
The reality of this format is that whoever has a first innings lead will gain the huge advantage of knowing they can play for a draw. And unfortunately I really don't want to be bowling at Cook in that situation.

Brooks injured his thumb when fielding according to the commentators. So nothing to do with his general fitness.

Nailsea_Fizz
26/09/2020 10:43
A little untidy start sadly.

AGod
26/09/2020 10:48
Wrong, Nailsea.

Not "unfair," at all.

Brooks produced a return of 25 wkts at 29.12 in the CC last season.

This was, comfortably, the worst record of any Somerset bowler. Tenth of ten.

The next worst average was 26.22 (TG).

You’re also wrong about pre-conceived notions. I hoped and thought that he’d be effective for us when on the field, though I worried about his injury history.

Perhaps you can also explain this:

"Of couse it's unfair but don't let that get in the way of pre conceived ideas. Bit early to judge in my view."

How can it be "too early to judge," when somebody is the end of Year 2 of a 3 year contract and has clearly been struggling for fitness in this, his second season?

This is painful to watch. At least Essex can only bat for another 15 overs.

I think I'd rather have had Sale and VDM in the side than Brooks and Leach. Roelof in particular - at least he makes some noise when he's out there, and he kept the runs down in the group matches. Sale is at least fit and his T20 bowling wasn't that bad outside of the death overs.

At the end of the day, we’ve done alright.

Think we should have had a third man throughout and would have saved runs, had we done so.

Bowlers have generally stuck at it pretty well. We’ve been unlucky with conditions. Cook is always a good bet to bed in on a slow deck.

Third innings, under pressure of a deficit and with an inexperienced batting line-up will be tough. I hope we continue to give a decent account of ourselves.

Well done lads. All to play for. I’m absolutely loving this; I’m every bit as keyed up as I ever was watching Lancashire in big games. Despite being mad keen for Somerset to win, I really hope the result is a just one. Please don’t let them end nine wickets down well behind and them win on first-innings which would just emphasise my point before about the nonsense of it being decided on that. If they get 270 say in the fourth innings, you would have to say fair play to them.

There is still a good chance if we can score well. The issue of the first inning lead does take the edge of it a little though for the tactical advantage it now gives to Essex, but I suppose they batted well to achieve that.

We get to the stage of bowling the last over of the day (90th over or 5:30pm ish, AND the light is okay - thanks Hants).
Essex are 9 down and require, say 6 to win. Would they block or go for the win?
4 or less and no loss of 10th wicket, they draw the match and win the trophy.
5 and the match is tied regardless of whether they lose their 10th wicket off the last ball and the trophy is shared.
6 and Essex win the match and the trophy.

My understanding is a tie is when same runs have been scored regardless of wickets?.

Have just looked up a Lancashire V Surrey game from 1988 Tractor. That was drawn with scores level . Surrey 253 and 158-7 declared. Lancs 140 and 271-9. It is given as a draw as opposed to a tie.

I remember debating with friends whether to go to the first, second ,or third day. The first day was really exciting with a Wasim Akram hat trick. The third day was obviously very exciting and Wasim was caught for 98 off the last ball of the match on the boundary trying to get his century with a six. Not the most team thinking of shots.

Second day that we decided to go to was an awful day’s cricket and freezing cold too!! Trevor Jesty, normally such a fluent batsman , scored the worst one I’ve ever seen. It must’ve taken half an hour and it was a real mercy when he was out.

If we had got our decision right on what game to go to, I would’ve had must what must be a fairly rare distinction of seeing a tie and a match drawn with scores tied and wickets left. Story of my cricket watching life really!

There’s something very obvious that could go wrong early in the Essex reply, Grockle. If it does it will be a major gut-check time for the rest of an Essex batting line-up that scarcely distinguished itself in their first innings.

I’m still gutted about Tom’s first innings leg-side giveaway because he had been looking good and I think that may well have cost us 40-50 first innings runs... and with those extra runs on the board, the match would have a totally different complexion.

P.s Does anybody else know what the Sky commentators were talking about this afternoon ... they were going on about some guy who, they claimed, is 6 feet 11, so makes even Steven Finn, who was on commentary, look shortish. But they were talking as though it was someone directly relevant to this match - they said the person in question hadn’t made a 50 this season, but was averaging 49.

No taller than the Big Bird, so nope. Essex used to have a batsman of that height, but I can only think otherwise of Muhammad Irfan.

Somerset have excelled themselves in this match, if we get to 200 lead that will do me, particularly as I only wanted 200 in the first innings. Remember Leach took 8 wickets for us to win against Essex in 2018. Bring it on.

It’s very uncharacteristic for me to want a later declaration as I’m usually one for early declarations. I know my decision is being coloured by hating the thought of Essex winning the match, not the trophy as I think that would be meaningless anyway if they do it on first innings score. I do feel we need a few more runs to give the bowlers just that bit extra to bowl at.

Get Cook early we have a great chance. In the Taunton game last year, the rest were like rabbits in headlights without him except Browne who I thought batted reasonably well. Beautifully though Cook batted, Cove could’ve had him a few times early on just as Gregory could have at Taunton last year. Just need him to be a slightly better player and nick one!

Three centuries in six first class games is quite the record, let alone the last one being in a domestic final at Lord's.

An absolutely wonderful achievement by Tom Lammonby, wholly undiluted by the absence of spectators at the respective grounds. How long before England come knocking ?

Whatever happens from here, we've done superbly well and the future is bright. Would love us to beat the odds and roll Essex over tomorrow.

When was the last time Mr Cook got a duck ? He must be due for one, mustn't he ?

Absolutely no debate needed. DECLARE overnight.

What do Essex want, us wasting 6/8/10 overs at 10.30am, or their openers up against a firing Craig & Lewis on a fresh nippy crisp September Sunday.

No time for caution, be bold, make a statement, show we are backing our attack, "we dont need more runs guys, we are backing you biys to rip into them first thing"

What would Chris Rogers do.....?

If the forecast is right then Essex’s luck with the weather is about to run out from a batting standpoint. However, if it’s as heavily overcast as forecast then they may gain from a day heavily curtailed by bad light.

Personally, I don’t want to put this game on a plate for them by just declaring now.

If we “lose,” the game on the first innings total BS technicality, then so be it. But I certainly don’t want to lose the game in the commonly understood meaning of the term.

Declare now we give ourselves the best chance of winning.
I'm not interested in the Essex winning bit.
Every over we bat is reducing our chances of winning.
A draw is a loss so if they get 192 who cares.
The worst scenario possible is Essex 160/8 at 5pm & we go off for bad light, thats not bad luck it's over cautious declaration.

Lammonby has indeed scored three centuries in his first six first-class matches - but they have actually come in three consecutive matches, a great feat for someone so new to the game.

I really hope that he has a chance to talk with Alastair Cook, who will probably be willing enough to share some of his experience. And let there be no complaints here if the England selector(s) think he is good enough to play at the highest level before long. His career is more important than our special wishes for Somerset,

I understand your point as I was at a game at Chelmsford years ago when I was screaming for Lancashire to declare first thing and they batted on for 3/4 of an hour, Essex finishing nine down and nowhere near. That was so typical of Lancashire cricket of post 1991 (other than when Wasim was captain) and I gather you’ve had the same thing with Marcus as skipper .However, I think the worst scenario possible is Essex winning by one wicket with some time to spare if we declare straight away. Lancashire had lots more runs than this to play with.

Agree re TL, LOL . Hope he’s not burdened with false expectations but I’ve never seen a better looking young English opener. However I can think of at least two fine Lancashire opening left handed batsmen who looked very good ( though not TL good) in their first seasons but never quite got it and I’m not thinking of Graeme Fowler who Vic Marks likened TL to today. I think he meant his busy mannerisms rather than technique.

Must be getting too easy to please in my old-age as I said I hadn’t seen a better young English number three than Zak Crawley recently; you could well imagine those two sharing some very big stands for England in the future.

I would be surprised if we declared overnight but we do need to give ourselves as much time as possible to get the 10 wickets. Dont know what the light issues might be like later on. Tom is an inspired captain so who knows...

Have we got enough runs already? It is an interesting question. I think we may have but if batting on is the choice then another quick 30-40 this morning should do it.

Let's face it, if the positions were reversed I am sure plenty on here would be worried and concerned we would not chase down the current 192.

Should we back our bowlers to get it done? Absolutely yes, no reason not to as far as I can see.

Just a total shame we all cannot attend Lords. It would have been a great 5 days there.

Just what the British government think they are doing is beyond me. Common sense or consistency not top of the agenda there. How thousands can march and gather, with no social distancing whatsoever, in central London yesterday and it is somehow all ok and yet a couple of thousand Somerset members cannot attend Lords sitting several seats and rows apart.

But be that as it may, as we all wake on this potential Christmas morning, get the cider lined up and lets enjoy the day, though we may need to use the very edge of our seats to borrow a phrase from Farmer!

AGod
27/09/2020 07:24
The Government fears a rebellion if it tries to outlaw the right to gather and protest. It fears no such rebellion in the case of watching cricket. The protests are supposed to take place with masks and social distancing and once it becomes apparent that a protest is not happening in such a manner, the protest gets closed down, as happened yesterday. It should, of course, have been fairly obvious that a protest against the wearing of masks was very unlikely to lead to people wearing masks and so the law should probably be temporarily amended so that those "with form," for not cooperating with the rules aren't allowed to hold any more protests.

Breezy, bitterly cold and heavily overcast. An unpleasant day for bowling and a hideous one for fielding in the slips. My sympathies to those that will have to do so for us, later today.

As to what we would be thinking, were we in their position?

Well, imagine we had, say, 2010 Marcus...

... Many of us would be thinking "if he bats for 3 hours, then victory is highly likely but, if he's out straight away, then we'd fear for us."

They should be feeling the same way in the case of Cook... except that, depending on the target, Cook may need to bat for longer than Marcus, in order to achieve the same result.

I just hate that it's such a slow and low track though because that means that, even if we get Cook early, the rest might manage to get away with it for them. If this track had pace and bounce and we got Chef early, then I wouldn't give them a sniff of avoiding a defeat... but on this lifeless service they *might* be able to block it out, even if get Chef early.

I can't see Somerset declaring overnight, I just can't imagine it. A few overs, quick runs and then declare would be my guess, and then we'll see if we can get Cook out!

Overall, we were unlucky to lose the toss and got the worst of the first two days' weather but that's just the way it is. If we hadn't lost our best two batsmen early and then reached 95 for 4, we may well have scored more and enough for a first innings lead. Who knows? As for the trophy being decided on the first innings lead, well, that was the decision before the tournament started. Yes, they could have gone for the Sheffield Shield model, where a drawn final means the team with the most points wins, which would have clearly benefited us; or they could have just shared the title. There's no perfect solution.

But we are where we are and, weather permitting of course, it's still in our hands.

Come on Somerset!

AGod
27/09/2020 10:15
No, no, no. Declaring straight away just gives them a boost - it makes us look desperate and would seem to be handing them the game on a plate.

We need runs to play with so that IF we can get rid of Cook, then we can be as attacking as Tom wants to be vs the rest of their lot. IF we can't get rid of Cook, we're hugely unlikely to win anyway, whenever we declare.

Further, there is no forecast improvement in the weather. If it looked likely that there was going to be an hour of heavy cloud cover, followed by sunshine, then I'd probably be with the declaration brigade. But same doesn't look likely.

In an ideal world then, for me, we'd bat for 75 minutes and put on another 60 or so runs in the process (if Craig O goes really well)... and then get them in for 45 minutes before lunch. That, effectively, gives us 2 sessions to get though them (because the last 45 minutes or so of the day is likely to be lost to the light anyway)

2 sessions may be enough if Cook goes early. If Cook doesn't go early, then 3 sessions are most unlikely to be enough anyway!

We must hope for some shooters and bit more turn out of the footholes .. and for Leachy to find form and confidence..

This doesn't really look as though it's going to go our way. Too much to do and Bailey and co will be off for light at the earliest opportunity.

But I think there's an enormous positive to take from this, that isn't specific to Somerset. A guy like Mike Atherton, who has often been far from complimentary about the County game, has clearly been very impressed with the quality of this Final. From his tone of voice, at times, I'd say he's almost been shocked by the quality of the contest (like Agnew, and others, I imagine he sees little red ball County cricket).

Like it or not, guys like him can sometimes have an influence in the corridors of power so it's a jolly good thing if the perception that county cricket is somehow not worthy is being heavily weakened.

I'm a bit annoyed that the MCC have produced such a flat pitch for the game. The idea of having 5 days, to allow for some bad weather, was a good one... but it's somewhat undermined if the pitch is fit for a 7-day game!!

Anyway, whatever happens after tea, it's been an excellent mini-season, with Lammonby's emergence extremely exciting, consistently excellent performances from Cove and Josh and tons from Tom, Steve, George and Eddie (plus Jamie). Oh, and with rare exceptions, terrific slip catching from Cove, Jove, Hildreth and Roelof.

Work do to on the squad thought nonetheless, since we are really light on numbers, what with the various departures and/or defections. I hope it will be a busy winter for Mr Hurry, as there's no room for complacency.

In truth we knew the rules before we started and although unlucky with the toss and the weather we should really have grafted more first innings runs than we managed. None the less we have aquited ourselves well and can hold our heads high !

Both non Test venue teams have provided a splendid game. I think it is slightly weak the way Essex have gone on the defensive. Don’t get our last bowling change. TL or skipper surely?

Temp spinners on coz of light suggests this is all but done I'm afraid.

Once more the part time 'naysayer' is pretty much on the money. 16 overs and RtD established without us able to use our pace men properly.

Not sure we have enough of anything to get this done I'm afraid. Break out the bridesmaids dress again people.

At least we won't have that debate about whether we won a first league 'County Championship' or not.

It seems our ability to get these wickets is being strangled by the bowling constraint. Despite my comment above I suppose that at least the umpires are allowing play to continue.
I think we can be proud of how this pretty young team has performed throughout this competition

Not sure the Lord's groundsman takes much credit from this surface.

Low, slow & turgid is hardly what either side would have hoped for.

(I assume 'groundsman' is still allowed, or perhaps it has to be 'grounder' these days !).

The first innings rule will cost us then, as seemed quite likely.

I think no third man for much of the first innings probably cost 30 or so runs in the field and Tom’s leg-side dismissal gave them one more wicket than they merited on day one, and may also have cost us 40-50 runs. Then, you can look at the collapse yesterday afternoon, in mid-afternoon which cost us time for bowling Essex out (by slowing us down). Those are the bits that - whether individually or collectively - may have made the difference in terms of us being beaten on the basis of a daft rule.

Of course, Sir A Cook’s first innings was the other huge thorn in our flesh.

All of the SCCC players can hold their heads very high indeed after this season.

It won't make it any easier for them, listening to & watching Essex celebrate again shortly.

Yet more motivation for next year.

If buts and maybe's Mart.
I wouldn't have dropped Josh, but if Jove hadn't left earlier than he should have, then I would have agreed with him for Brooks. Jove may well have seen us score more runs, given another bowling dimension, and enhanced the slip fielding - probably.

Poor wicket for such a match. Very slow and low.

Why on earth would we have picked Bess for Davey after the way that Davey played all year?

As for Jamie Overton?

One can only assume that he didn't want to play for us anymore, hence he joined Surrey.

Even if he did, this was emphatically not the pitch for a big, tall, quick.

If this was a track for any type of bowler, it was a track for a skiddy type of bowler.

Had it not been so freezing cold, then the ball would probably have swung, and then both sets of bowlers would have been in with a better chance.

Cannot agree with the Sky assessment that Essex slightly better over five days. Without weather interruptions and with the declaration not being needed, could’ve been any result at all. Teams inseparable as far as I could see

Unfortunately, the dead pitch was, kind of, the winner.

Good performance from Somerset. Stuck at it.

Essex had the luck with the weather for the first 4 days of the match.

The weather was kind of in our favour today, but the extreme cold meant that the cloud wasn't as beneficial as it otherwise would have been.

Encouraged with Leachy's display today.

Almost comforting that after all that's happened in 2020 as far as Somerset is concerned it's the same old normal.

Just console ourselves that in 18 months time SAC will have retired to become a full time shepherd whilst Lammonby, Byrom, Green, Bartlett, Banton et al will have had another season's experience, Will Smeed will be knocking on the door of the Championship side and our young side will be thrusting aside all before them. We may even be permitted to go and watch them!

Of course that's if we even have a county championship left.

No great surprises today and it was impressive that our bowlers and fielders never lost their energy. Lots of "if onlys" but they don't count for anything.

I'm already hungry for next season and pleased that in just under three months the nights will start getting shorter.

Someone on the Essex forum labelled lommonby as a future wold beater in the making.

These were the 2 best 4 day teams in the county. I think we need to replace Jove if we are to topple them though. Hopefully the budget allows us to do so.

Jamie being picked and used would have brought us off earlier on some days and definitely have created debates about light today. Also big quicks are OK with small totals as long as batsmen don't connect or they are very tight in their line and length (not Jamie's massive forte). If they get bat on ball, they tend to win.

Dom instead of Josh? No idea why On a pitch with spin only at the back end I'm not sure what people expected Dom to do in the first half of the game, he doesn't exactly go through sides like a dose of salts when there us nothing there.

You'll be moaning about us not picking Gilchrist soon

I have already written here that I deplore play-offs and finals (in any sports) to determine the winner of tournaments primarily based on acquiring points per match. And we all know that Somerset acquired seven more points than Esse in just five matches. I have been trying to think what it reminds me of - and then I remembered that Clinton won two million more votes than her rival but that Trump became president.

Whether Banton's presence would have made any difference to the result of the final is purely speculative, but as far as I can tell he has not yet appeared in any IPL matches (not that I know what side he plays for) and therefore could just as well have been at Lord's - or is he in quarantine?

LoL - I agree with you 100% about playoffs and finals in a league situation. In the "normal" world, it is just another way of squeezing yet more money out of loyal fans. Good examples are the Big Bash in Australia, and our own National Football league, where you can finish 7th, about a third of the way down the league, and still get promoted. Whilst I am sure that such shambles will continue, because money talks, it has little to do with a true season long contest.

Reading back, there are a few interesting comments for the final session of day 4 when after the dismissal of Tom Abell, our scoring slowed. WSM argued overnight for a declaration at the start of day 5, but our lead then was precarious and we chose the extra half hour of batting.

Hamez said at 15.43 that we had enough wickets in hand to get them in tomorrow morning for 3 sessions. At 17.44 Rod1883 asked for the Cove and Jove show (or the Cove and Josh show suggested Grockle).

The session seemed to have cost us the advantage and with the benefit of hindsight, I wish we could have done something differently to get those extra 40 or so runs by the end of day 4. If ever there was a time for Tom Abell to call for a little recklessness or change the batting order in red ball cricket, that was it

Somerset LaLaLa

Anyway, Grockle are we going to have a vote for Somerset players of the year?

Old Boy!
28/09/2020 20:08
Well folks. As far as I'm concerned, other than the fact that it would have been nice to have come first for a change, I think the performance of the management and the players throughout the season have nothing to be sorry about. Without any pension improvers from abroad this season, the academy now and over the past few years has produced an impressive number of successful fulltime cricketers - so many in fact that we cannot possibly give them all the cricket they deserve. Look around the counties and there are a number of good cricketers brought along out of our academy. We need to make sure we do not lose the current management team who have inspired so many youngsters.
I am at an advanced age but still hope to see our club get it's just reward soon.

As far as the match which ended yesterday, the papers and the trophy says that Essex won - but as far as I see it we were beaten by the inclement weather on day one particularly, and one exceptional ex-England batsman. I believe every one of our players deserves praise. If there is one change I would have made, but obviously find it difficult to decide in place of who, would be Dom Bess. You will have heard me say before, almost every time Jack Leach and Dom Bess would the next two names on the team sheet after Tom Abell - two spinners always better than one.
Now lets hope that we can go into 2021 with great confidence - and perhaps have a nice Christmas present, forlorn I presume - The Hundred rubbish is cancelled for ever.

I also agree with Old Boy! The match was a draw, there very little between the two sides, the team that batted first was always going to be at a disadvantage. As for player of the year? No need for a red ball and white ball option in my opinion, there wasn't enough cricket for that.
