This game could decide whether Somerset get an early confirmation of a home quarter final in this year's Blast. Their win rationn for 2023 means that if they win tonight they WILL be at home in the next round. A slightly different position than usual where we are playing the last game to see if we even qualify for the knockout section of the competition!! This was a game we were not at so the report on it (which we felt ought to exist) is a summary based on what could be picked up from snippets on the net while in Birmingham and sllightly worse for wear!!

Thought I'd provide a report from someone who was there whose education was improved by the presence of a Grockle in his school.... Mr Harry Everett (ex pupil of Uffculme School where his ICT lessons were second to none between 2009 to 2011)
A victory here confirmed a home Quarter final for Somerset with a 10 to 2 win/loss ratio presently. It will take place on Friday 6 July at 18:30 and with luck we won't do our usual thing of doing well in one part of the competition and then playing like mares in the second!! We either scrape through to the knockout aspect and then play much better while losing narrowly or we come through the league aspect quite well and then seem to have never played the game in this format during the knockouts or Finals day. Oh for some consistency during this year's little jaunt. The least we deserve this year is a jaunt to Birmingham for Finals Day surely!!
There are two games left during the last week in June and into early July. We play Surrey at the Oval on Friday 30th and then we finish with a game against Kent on the first Sunday in July. The addition of Ish Sodhi to the squad after the announcement of his signing will be interesting - he is with us for the rest of the competition and one four day game against Hampshire from the 10th to the 13th

Middlesex showing anything is possible in these games last night. Sold out and a probable full house for this one in Taunton on a Friday.
The home quarter final is there for the taking but we have to keep our focus. It will be interesting to see who plays and who is 'rested' is anyone.
I'm missing this one. Hope it goes well.

Somerset bring back Matt Henry in place of Jack Brooks; otherwise the squad remains the same as that on duty at Cardiff on Wednesday.
Glo`shire were virtually eliminated from quarter-final qualification with a thumping defeat at home to Sussex tonight.

Can’t see the reason for leaving out Jack Brooks after 5 wickets in his 2 games . On performance alone he should be in in place of Kasey Aldridge .
Seamer Ajeet Singh Dale becomes the ninth Glo`shire player to make his T20 Blast debut this season at Taunton tonight.
Former Yorkshire quickie Josh Shaw is also included, with Zafar Gohar, Tom Price and Matt Taylor left out from the squad on duty against Sussex last night.

Bashir looking promising again. Crofty on Sky making the interesting point that his variations are less obvious to spot from his action than with many young bowlers. Reckon he could get serious turn on a halfway helpful wicket also.
Somersets bowling by the backup bowlers has been pretty abysmal unfortunately
John Turner, of Hampshire, who only made his debut the game before they played us (I think) might already be the best bowler in the entire competition. Check out his figures tonight and compare and contrast with those of his teammates.

Now that WAS an exciting match - with, of course, the best side triumphant at the end.

Great work from the all rounders to bring it home after Smeed was the only batter to perform (and boy did he perform). On another day the 9 Wides and 4 No Balls will cost us a lot more though.
I was only able to dip in and out of this game during the evening.
Somerset were ahead. Somerset were behind. Somerset were ahead, repeat, etc, etc...
But at no point were they ever entirely out of the game, and it was great to see some of the lesser batting lights bringing home the victory.

Here's to the knockout stage! And even with injuries, most particularly to RvdM, Somerset should feel confident.

I am glad Aldridge performed with his bat, because his one over was the worst I have seen for a long time, since Boswell.

Another case of the will to win generating the means to win. An exceptional innings from Smeed. A fighting one when it was needed from Green. When Green went, Aldridge calmly kept us in the hunt. And the way in which Overton walked to the wicket seemed to remove any doubt. The crowd was behind the team all the way. The noise, applause and cheering built and built, layer on layer, as Green, Aldridge and Overton took Somerset closer and reached a deafening crescendo in response to Overton lifting his arms to rouse the crowd still further as Aldridge faced the final over and calmly picked the places for his shots. By then every part of every stand looked like it had come alive as arms waved and applauded or shook 'four' and 'six' cards from one end of the ground to the other. And all the while the tension gripped like a vice. As people left they were looking each other in the eye, speechless and shaking their heads in disbelief at how Somerset had won yet another match that had looked to be gone for some time before the end. I have been watching such comebacks since 1958. I should be used to it. I am not.

Let's just say, if we don't win the trophy this year it'll be the definition of a missed opportunity
There are 6 or 8 teams who could easily win this.
It just takes one or 2 to be "their day"
Brum, Lancs, Notts, Surrey, Hamps all have match winners, as do we.
We are in great form but one poor game in the 1/4 we are done.
T20 is good fun and an enjoyable night out but impossible to predict.

Lancs have been underwhelming but, in the past few games, Buttler now seems to be coming into form and a top four of Buttler, Salt, Livingstone and Mitchell carries obvious potential menace.
However, I think Finals Day is more often decided by the bowling. Right now, I think Hants might have the edge there.
I do wonder whether management may attempt to find an overseas replacement for Siddle before QF day. I would have liked one for this part of the CC campaign but it’s now too late for that, with the Notts game about to start.

The injury update on the Club site doesn’t look very promising in the near future for both Siddle and RvDM but Gregory sounds slightly more optimistic

Yep, Somerset's form has been great and they'll surely be one of the favourites, but it's sport and it can go any direction - that's its joy. And it's anguish too.
But I'd love to see Smeed, Banton and T K-C occupy nearly all of an innings - that would be fun!

That's the kind of recruitment that I deplore when other counties do it - and so I have no wish for Somerset to go down that route.

Great to see a level of game on game consistency from Ben Green. Really do see his sun shining as Lewis' descends in white ball cricket
LoL - it might not be a parachuted in replacement. It could be a replacement for the period that Peter was due to be with us (up until the end of August).
Just a couple of negatives outside of the ground before the game started,which the club need to address;
Stewarding and checking of bags was well short of the required number to get everyone in before the game started., leading to massive queue s outside the river entrance.
Children were having all soft drinks cans removed from their person on entry and adults were being made to unscrew and drink plastic bottles to prove they didn’t contain alcohol.
On a hot night maybe a bit more common sense.and also greater clarity from the club on what you can and can’t bring in.
Last night was the first time ever that unopened soft cans have been removed as far as I’m aware.
If this is the case in future an alcohol free bar would be useful for kids and parents,as tap water was not readily available

Siddle & Henry were only ever signed to July 31, we have no overseas yet announced for August & September
Would imagine at least one spinner if not two.could probably do with one now if the right fit is available.
Edgbaston usually a slow turner. Can’t go to Finals Day with only one spinner. And even if Goldsworthy is fit? Management have shown less than zero faith in him this season.
