2025 CC1 - The Last Hurrah at Chelmsford

The 2025 season comes to an end as we face Essex at Chelmsford. The four point penalty for the Durham pitch at Taunton has ended the mathematical chance Somerset had of being involved in the trophy run in and Essex want at least a big bonus point draw to keep them out of the bottom of the table. We will bat first using our 7th opening partnership of the season as Josh Thomas becomes our 31st different opening bat in our CC1 history since 2007 and part of the 51st partnership in the same period of time!! Still searching, wonder how this one will go?
CC1 v Essex @ Chelmsford Wednesday 24th September 2025
Somerset only need a draw in this one to confirm their 3rd place in the Championship this season. Essex would like as many bonus points as possible to solidify their place in the middle ranks of the table.
The side for this meeting is;
Vaughan, Thomas, Lammonby, Rew J, TKC, Goldsworthy, Aldridge, Overton, Gregory, Leach, Ball
Josh Thomas is in for Tom Abell after his concussion diagnosis in the last game puts him out of this one. Ben Green and Josh Davey have played their last red ball game for the county before their move to Leicester though Kasey Aldridge keeps his place after his excellent batting performance against Hampshire last week so he will finish and move to Durham at the end of this one. Sean Dickson and Andy Umeed have already moved their cricketing credentials away from Taunton as one moves to Wales and the other is a 'bat without portfolio' as I type. The other two questions have yet to be answered. Will Smeed has not got his chance to put his name in the frame for a red ball 2026 place as of yet - some suggested that this might be the game but it was not to be. The other one is the future of Shoaib Bashir who will go with England to Australia as the only specialist spinner for the Ashes but has probably appeared in Somerset kit for the last time but with no indication of where his future county berth may be.
Somerset win the toss and will bat first. Archie Vaughan walks out with his fourth red ball opening partner of the year - Josh Thomas. The young man had a good Metrobank series as a middle order batter, coming in some difficult positions and offering a solid and aggressive solution on more than one occasion as the situation required.
Porter and Bracewell start and the new pair settle down but not for long as Archie goes for 8 off 19 in the 7th over as Walters takes an excellent one handed diving catch at third slip off Porter. However, Thomas looks unphased by the new responsbility and begins his first class batting career with aplomb and confidence with some excellent boundary shots to some quite sloppy Essex bowling. His new partner is Tom Lammonby and they move the score on, mostly initially courtesy of Josh's bat as he puts the Essex attack to the sword. He certainly does not look like the new boy in this game.
There are few worries as the two move the score on in the first session. At 70 for 1, Josh brings up his first red ball 50 with a run a ball 51 (with 9 fours and 1 six just before the milestone), 4 runs later he nearly leaves the field of play as he swipes at an off stump delivery and Dean Elgar puts down a pretty easy chance. Now he needs to build from there and make the mistake significant.
The 100 comes up just before the lunch break and Somerset go in without further loss on 'Nelson'
After the 40 minutes the Essex press comes on strong and Somerset spend another 40 minutes on 111 without moving forward but the scoring gets moving again until the 41st over when Josh's first innings as a Somerset opener ends thanks to an excellent ball from Porter which bowls the young man on 86 (127 balls with 14 fours and a six) at 141 for 2. An impressive start for the young man and something promising to take into the winter as we look at a rebuilt first team in 2026.
The solid base should allow Somerset to set up a good total in this game as James Rew comes out needing short of 50 to join Tom Abell as a Somerset bat who will pass 1000 runs in the season. He helps his partner move the score past 150 in the 44th with 7 to his name and Tom L on 40 from 105 balls.
Unfortunately, the possible second individual 50 in the game does not happen as Bennett has Lammonby LBW for 47 from 128 in the 50th over at 167 for 3. In comes TKC who takes a four off Bracewell in his first over faced. However, that is pretty much 'all she wrote' as Bracewell gets his revenge in his next as the sub keeper Fernandez catches the new bat coming up the wicket. He goes for 6 from 7 and Somerset move to 184 for 3. As Anthoiny Gibson says at the time 'It can always go one fo two ways'.
The next man in is Lewis Goldsworthy who joins James Rew on 27 from his 36 balls faced. These two move the score past 200 to 211 at the Tea break and after the break the two men start to build an impressive partnership. Firstly at a score of 42, James Rew reaches the 1000 run milestone in the season and then they move past 50 runs together at 231 for 4 with the new man passing his partner with 24 from 59 balls compared with 22 from 47 from Rew.
Rew then hits a third target as he moves past a personal 50 at 244 for 4 from 89 balls with 5 fours. After which the two get us our first batting bonus point as they pass 250.
It is all going 'swimmingly' until 274 when Rew plays at a ball he ought to have left from Bracewell and he leaves the field of play for 74 from 114, caught by Fernandez with a century probably nailed on if he had kept the concentration levels a little higher.
In comes Kasey Aldridge who does little but give Essex their second bowling bonus point as he drives loosely at a ball from Porter in the 87th over becoming Fernandez's third caught behind and leaving with 5 to his name and Somerset on 281 for 5.
Next man in is Overton (ahead of Gregory again?) with Goldsworthy looking at a 50 before the close of play. But first the two take the visitors past 300 with a flashed four from Overton off Thain. This is followed by a guided four to Third by Goldsworthy in Thain's next over to move him to 50 in 120 balls with 8 fours at 313 for 6.
Just before the end of play opon Day 1 the two move past a 50 partnership from 48 balls in 35 minutes in the 95th over. One over later the umpires call time at 339 for 6 with Goldsworthy on 61 from 127 and Overton on 31 from 38.
Day 2
Thain and Bracewell look to try and get their side an extra bowling point in the first 14 overs of the second day while Goldsworthy and COve will be looking to move the score past 400 and even 450? in the same number of balls.
First of all Lewis Jr passes his best score of the season at 71 from 145 balls beating his Yorkshire score. Then the 350 arrive and another bonus point. Then at 368 Craig passes 50 from 54 in 103rd over. Is the 400 on in 7 overs? Well it might be while these two are together but Harmer bowls Overton for 60 with an excellent ball at 379 for 7 in the 106th. Jack Leach comes in (again before Gregory) with Someret needing 21 in 4 overs. They don't make it and only pass 400 in the 113rd.
Leach goes fro 14 from 43 caught behind off Bennet at 412 for 8 which finally brings in Lewis Gregory who is looking to move the score on quickly and is out trying just that off a top edge from a slog sweep at 425 caught by Porter off harmer for 9 from 11.
In comes Ball with Goldsworthy on 93 which he moves to 99 at 432 for 9 . Jake's only function is to get Lewis on strike. He does that and Harmer bowls, he takes the single and goes to 100 from 191 deliveries (14 fours) at 433 for 9. An excellent innings from a man whioi is developping into a very good allround cricketer in all formats. So glad he kept faith in the county until they decided to keep faith in him!!
Jake now has licence to swing a bit as we move into the last half hour of the first session of the day. He is swinging at Bennett and geets a single. Goldsworthy is looking to push the score but is caught going for a six off the next ball caught by Ellison on the boundary for a straight 100 at 433 all out. Ball goes for 1 and we are done at 12:15.
Elgar and the mountain that is Walter (he's a big bloke) come out to bat just before the lunch break. Craig bowls the first and other than an Elgar boundary there is nothing happening. Ball takes the second and also delivers an over with only one boundary scoring shot in it. That is then lunch with the Essex pair walking off with 8 to their name equally shared between them
After lunch I was out of range of a TV and livestream from 2pm to 5:15. Have to say that I did not miss much as Essex made hay on a docile pitch with no Somerset bowler getting any kind of joy from it while Dean Elgar and Paul Walter moved the score to an unbeaten 281, the highest first wicket partmnership against Somerset, way past the prebious 234. Elgar moved past 50 and then 100. Walter was unstoppable going one further by passing 150 before he becomes the first wicket of the innings just before the end of play as Lewis Goldsworthy takes an excellent diving catch at mid wicket from an Overton delivery at 286 for 1.
It doesn't exactly open the floodgates but Soerset do remove Simon Harmer before play ends when he gloves another Overton ball to Aldridge in the form of a parabolic loop. He finishes the day returning to the dressing room for 12 (3 boundaries) and Elgar ends the day on 111 not out.
In the 67 overs of the Essex innings, no one really went for bucketloads, they just didn't get anything from the surface or the environment. Only Craig with 2 for 49 from his 14 and a bit got any kind of reward for the hard afternoon. The other 6 bowlers got 'nada'. One aspect that was noticable was that Lewis Gregory bowled 11 overs and so was not necessarily injured when it was decided to send Jack Leach in before the skipper when we had 4 overs to reach the 400 batting point. Something we did not achieve - puzzling.
Anyway - this game has been altered by the afternoon session. We must have thought we were in a strong position at lunchtime today. We are no longer in command at the end of Day 2. It is doubtful that there is any other result possible in this game than the draw but we will see how tomorrow develops but unless this surface changes drastically, getting a score to win this and bowling the other side out in the two days left looks very doubtful - even if that result meant anything to either side.
Day 3
Lewis Gregory starts the second half of the game with an over where the ball moves more in 6 balls than most of yesterday. Westley adds 3 runs at the start of his innings and Elgar adds 1 as they move to a run from 300 in the 69th over. Craig Overton is coming in from the other end. Westley edges the ball past the slip cordon to move to 303 for 2. May be a long day for the visitors.
However, a short ball from Craig in his next over has Westley pulling the ball and he does that straight to Josh Thomas going for 7 from 10 at 307 for 3. In comes Allison and Overton goes to 3 for 53 and that is COve's 500th first class wicket.
There are early bowling changes in this morning as Jake Ball replaces the skipper and Kasey Aldridge comes on at the other end for the 74th. Kasey gets Elgar playing across the line and having the bat LBW for 118 from 227 balls at 319 for 4 out comes Matt Critchley.
4 runs from Critchley in the 84th brings up the next Essex bonus point as they pass 350 to 353 off Lewis Gregory. It moves the Essex man on to 14 with his partner on 25. It is Allison who is the next to go but at the start of Craig's next over he bowls him middle stump for 27 from 59 at 369 for 5.
The next man in is Nick Pepper who did not keep for Essex because of an early finger injury but he is going to bat. Before lunch Lewis gets some success as he has Critchley LBW for 29 from 54 at 379 for 6 - second bonus bowling point for Somerset as Thain comes out. He is nearly out first ball but is dropped in the slips by TKC there is then a fielding attempt which goes to the boundary for 5 and COve goes for 9 runs off 2 balls before the lunch break. however the big Somerset bowler gets revenge as he takes a 5-fer with Pepper out LBW for 17 off 23 at 393 for 7. Lunch comes with Overton on 5 for 79 halfway through the 95th over.
A good session for Somerset this morning after wheeling in for almost an afternoon yesterday with no success they have 5 in the morning this morning.
Bracewell joins Thain after Essex lost 7 wickets for 116 from about the last hour on Day 2. Overton finishes off the over pre-lunch to leave 68 left in the day. Gregory continues at the other end. By the 99th, with Bracewell still not off the mark, Essex have reached 399 so it is difficult to get things going. Bracewell sends a leading edge into the airt and sub Ben Green takes the catch and Craig takes another at 399 for 8 with the home side still 34 short of the Somerset first innings total.
Charlie Bennett is the next man in and Thain takes the single off the first ball of the 100th over from Aldridge that brings up the 4th batting point at 400 which probably confirms Essex as a CC1 side for 2026. They move the score on to 418 for 8 in the 104th when we re-introduce spin as Jack Leach comes on to close the innings with luck. His first over today is a maiden. He is in tandem with Jake Ball quite soon as he takes over from COve. Bennett does not seem to be waiting about in his first red ball innings as he goes to 18 including 4 boundaries as Essex move to within single figures of Somerset's first innings total. He nearly gives a C&B to the spinner at 432 in the 106th which is just out of reach an d is misfielded for a four bny tyhe skipper. The next ball he does pop back to Jack for 22 from 26 at 432 for 9 with his county trailing by 1.
Porter is the last man in and he hits his first ball from Leach for six out of the ground to move into the lead. They have 4 and a bit overs to get the 12 they need for the last bonus point at 450. But they don't make it as 2 balls later Porter tries again, hits it up into the air and he is very well caught by Josh Thomas for 6 and it is 438 all out, 5 in the lead and Jack has done his job.
A 10 minute changeover and Vaughan and Thomas are back out in the middle to face Porter and Bracewell. Noting happens really in the first 5 as the Somerset pair reach 22 with Archie on 8 and Josh on 12. It then changes as Porter produces a good one in the 7th that bowls Vaughan as he misses a big off drive and is out for that 8 breaking the middle stump in the process.
Somerset are 22 for 1 and have only reached 23 when Tom Lammonby is plumb in front missing a ball from Bennett without increasing his season score of 810 runs with 2 centuries and 2 50s in the summer. That's him done for 2025 and out comes James Rew
It's a different day today from yesterday with an hour to go to Tea. Josh Thomas drives handsomely in the 13th over for four to move the score past 50 to 51 for 2. He has 25 (39) and Rew has 11 (13). In the 14th over Rew, in two minds gets a top edge to Bennett and goes for 19 at a run a ball caught by Thain. Kohler-Cadmore does not survive the next over from Bracewell with the score having gone on by 1 run (to Thomas). He is completely skittled by Doug Bracewell having only faced 3 balls for no score. He was simply late on it. It is 60 for 4 as the light closes in and the floodlights come on to greet Lewis Goldsworthy in the pre Tea gloom.
Once again, Josh Thomas is looking far more confident than his experience would suggest he should be. He is the solid aspect of this innings and is willing to play shots to balls that deserve it. In both innings he has looked in a different class to many of his teammates but it is getting darker out there as we move to a later Tea interval. Bennet is replaced by Thain just before the interval arrives however. Bennett has played very well with bat and ball in his first red ball appearance for his county.
It seems it will be a double change as Porter looks to replace Bracewell at the other end. Thain starts with a maiden. Porter does come on. The Somerset pair do seem to be playing for Tea and the reset for the last session of the day. This is the last recognised pair of specialist bats so they need to put a stand in to take the initiative back from the home side. Porter has bowled well in this innings with 1 for 9 from his 7 overs presently and he will bowl the last one before the interval with 32 left in the day. Thain only gives away a leg bye in his second over before the last 6 balls. Thomas nearly goes to a cut shot that zip quickly past Harmer at a catchable height. It was a chance but Josh just takes the single instead. Lewis faces the second half of the over and he negotiates it taking a sioingle off the last.
Somerset go in at 79 for 4 leading by 74 with Goldsworthy on 7 and Thomas on 37
And then it all goes 'pear shaped' in the last session of Day 3. In darkish conditions (no excuse though) Thain and Bennett return to face Goldsworthy and Thomas with a need for a strong partnership from the Somerset pair to finish the day as we are only 78 runs ahead with a day to go. it isn't easy as the total moves up at about a run an over until the 27th over when Porter raps Thomas on the pad and he is given out LBW for 39 off 65 at 89 for 5... and then it all goes pretty wrong. 5 wickets left with 28 overs left after this one and out comes Aldridge for his last Somerset innings before he goes to pastures new.
He lasts 4 deliveries before he snicks the ball to Fernandez without scoring. He didn't seem too happy but he has to go and it is a double wicket maiden for Porter with the first one being his 550th wicket. This brings Overton in at 89 for 6 to face Bennett and he also bowls a maiden. Craig finally gets off the mark with 2 in Porter's next before becoming his next victim (presently 4 for 15 from 11) at 91 for 7 as he is caught in front missing a straight one. He goes for 2 from 4 and we are falling apart.
Jack is again in because of Gregory's cracked right hand and he has scored 1 and moved the score on to 95 before he decides there is a quick single off a Porter delivery. There is not a single and Goldsworthy quite rightly sends him back but he is too far up the wicket and is run out. Absolutely daft decision and Somerset are 95 for 8.
This brings in the skipper with a busted hand and he gets off the mark with a single. Essex bring on Simon Harmer for the 32nd over and he cleans up junior Lewis for 19 from 58 at 97 for 9 and as Anthony says on commentary "Somerset are going down in a heap and not a distinguished one at that".
Jake Ball is the last 'bastion' of the visitors batting as Critchley returns to the fray. We move to 99 with Jake getting off the mark and the umpires discussing the light but they decide it hasn't changed enough - it has seemed like early evening since the resumption after the Tea interval but there has been no real variation. In the 33rd he faces Harmer and he is bowled by the third ball. Somerset are out for 99 just 95 ahead.
Given the situation they have 21 overs left - minus 2. But the umpires have been asking Essex to play their spinners and though Somerset would be happy to play theirs there may be no more play today. Although play is supposed to resume at 5:19, it does seem to have got darker and the officials are out discussing the situation and they decide to not bother in the end.
What a dismal end to a decent season. We will be third in the CC1, we made the semi finals of the Metrobank 50 and we won the Blast. Not a bad bunch of results but you can't help feeling that we could have done better. We weren't on our game at Worcester in the Metro 50 and that first game against the same county in the CC1 when we failed to bowl them out in 200 overs after Banton's record first innings score probably did for our CC1 chances - all a bit of a rumble rather than a chase for the trophy in our 150th year.
Anyway the debates will start in a Day. However we have to go through the motions in Day 4 here to 'try' and defend 95 on a flat pitch. We proabbly hoped the light would get better and we could have finished this game tonight and I doubt the enthusiasm will be flowing enough to make a game of it tomorrow.
But what do I know?
Day 4
Overton v Elgar and Walter for the points on the last day of the Championship. Pretty good idea how this one is going to go but while there's play there's hope and after a two from Walter in a first nervous over from the Essex man, Gregory takes out Elgar with his first ball a pretty definite LBW decision. Essex are 2 for 1. In comes the Essex captain Westley.
There's some hope in the pitch and conditions but the total they are defending is very low in context. There's a couple of deliveries that stop and go past the bat plus a very good bit of fielding from Leach as the Essex men take a dodgy second which nearly ran out Walter. By the end of the 4th the home side have reached 22 for 1 and the batting partnership is already dangerous. A 15 run 4th over from the Somerset captain hasn't helped the position much either. Essex seem to be looking to get this game over as quickly as possible so it may very well be done this morning.
Gregory re-dresses the balance a little in the 6th as Westley fishes outside the off stump once too often and he goes for 13 from 21 at 30 for 2 caught behind by James Rew. In comes Allison.with 65 needed.
The 50 arrives from an Allison cover driven boundary in the 9th moving him on to 10 from 8 with Walter on a run a ball 25. A bit of resistance is still there however as Jake Ball's first of this innings is skied by Walter to Gregory in the deep who takes an excellent catch running back towards the boundary. He goes without adding to his score and it is 56 for 3 with Ball - for 1 after 1!!
Critchley comes out to take his side home needing 39 for victory. After 15 overs the score is 74 for 3 - needing 25 for the win but the lights are on and the light is getting worse. However, one would assume the umpires will want to finish the game rather than have people wait about until there's a change so they can get out for a win in the mid afternoon.
There's been a lot of playing and missing but there has been little luck and one wonders whether the visitors really deserve much after not providing their bowling attack with anything really to defend. 100 on this pitch is not going to allow a side to win a game unfortunately. At the end of the 17th a huge six off Ball from Allison takes the runs required to 2. Essex will take 22 points and stay in sixth while this defeat does not change Somerset's position in third. The only thing left to decide is whether Durham or Hampshire will be relegated and even that is pretty much decided as the Durham game will end in a draw and they will survive so we will be seeing Kasey in the red ball next year.
Gregory looks to keep Essex wondering with a maiden, keeping Allison stranded at the non striker's end. He even makes an appeal with his last ball of the 2025 season one would imagine. It is Ball who will finish off Somerset's claim to the CC1 in this summer with the 19th. Allison hits him into the river and that is an Essex 7 wicket win. Allison finishes on 32 (24) Critchley joins him not out on 19 (24) and Essex score 99 for 3.
The season is done and we only have the assessments to do and conversations about Somerset in 2026. Winter well if you are a summer user of the site. We'll see you all again in April.

An interesting mish mash of possibilities with Bants back and Smeedy hoping for something red before the winter. The Internationals are over so Thomas Rew might be about. Jake has signed for another year and the skipper will be considering possibilities for the early 2026 season. There will.of course be no Tom Abell as he will havw been ruled out by the concussion protocols after the Hampshire game.
Looking at the goodbye list, Sean and Andy seem to have already sailed for pastures new. The bowling injuries may suggest that Kasey, Ben and Josh may all be up for one last time in Somerset whites is on the cards. Shoaib is a mystery presently as we are hearing nothing about his plans for anything past the Australia tour. Who knows

Essex will be without Jordan Cox, who injured a knee playing for the England T20 side against Ireland at the weekend, and Netherlands international Shane Snater with a calf problem. Essex choose from: Westley (c), Allison, Benkenstein, Bennett, Critchley, Elgar, Hammer, Jones, Pepper,, Porter, Thain, Walter.
Shame there is no Smeed on the list - though it might have been a decent game to see what he could do but not at the moment it seems.
Glad to see that Josh T's suprise first class debut last week as a concussion sub was more than just convenience.

In other news, I'm getting a little bored with the 100 cheerleaders on the comms. I don't mind if they discuss other stuff in the gaps, but it's taking over the commentary on the actual match in front of them. And they can't even use the excuse that people can see what's happening on the stream, because they are actually commentating for the BBC and Essex are linking it to their pictures.
Lewis Goldsworthy also is growing in maturity and it would be lovely if he could add materially to his knock tomorrow.
Messrs Rew & Lammonby, also contibuted nicely.

Josh is the 31st opener in our CC1 campaigns since we returned to the top flight and this is the 53rd opening partnership in the same period of time. 53 pairs in 18 years or 52 pairs in 16 because 1 pair batted together for the whole of 2 seasons!!
Average of 3 pairs a season
We have the chance to overtake Surrey & take the runners up spot in the Championship. When Craig was out at 105.5 overs, that left 21 needed off 25 balls to get the fourth batting point.
At which stage Jack comes in ahead of Lewis, pokes around and we end up well short.
Yes, we are doing well in the game, but I just don’t understand why we treat potentially vital bonus points, with apparent ambivalence.

Lewis Goldsworthy didn`t help either by stopping play time-after-time to adjust his pads - isn`t this a job for the dressing room before play begins?
By his calculation Thomas-Vaughan combined age at the start of this match was 40 years 180 days.
On the 13 May 1993 one Marcus Trescothick (then aged 17y 140d) made his own first class debut against Lancashire at Taunton, opening the batting with Mark Lathwell (21y 139d); a combined age of 38 years 279 days. This may or may not be Somerset's youngest opening partnership.
Whilst Trescothick made just one run, Lathwell top scored with 71, which proved to be the best innings by any batter in what was a low scoring match that Somerset won by just 20 runs.
However, most watching will remember the match not for the youthfulness of the opening partnership, nor for the quirky stat of a Christmas day/Boxing day birthday opening combination, but for the 9-32 taken by Andy Caddick to bowl out Lancashire for 72 in the fourth innings.

We will see how a bunch of the 'older' guys do when they join sides newly promoted into CC1 - that'll be fun and good luck to them all.
Presently, it looks like our younger guy moving to greener pastures may find himself bowling in CC2 unless something moves in the second half of this series of games. Durham may be joining Worcestershire??

And apropos absolutely nothing other than to make anyone of my age feel old, I am going to Donovan's 60th anniversary concert on Sunday. 60th anniversary of his breakthrough performance on Ready Steady Go in 1965 and of his first hit, Catch the Wind, released a month later. For anyone counting, I was 14 at the time and he was 18. Oh yes, and, for cricket relevance, Somerset finished 7th of 17 in the Championship that year.
