Yes/No Grand Slam 2008 Tournament

2008 Grand Slam Trophy

By Ged
January 1 2008

Following the success of earlier Yes/No games, MTWD is proud to present a Grand Slam version of the game. New rules are set out from rule 11 onwards, but basically it is the same fun game. The 2007 trophy was wide open until the end. Grand Slam Yes/No provides a lot more room for the cream to bubble to the top. And what a magnificent gold e-trophy is up for grabs. Go for it.

2008 Grand Slam Yes/No Guess the Player Tournament

Competition Rules

The Rules are as follows:

1/ the cricketer will be current or will have recently retired - he will have played 1st class cricket for Middlesex and/or be a player with some element of international cricket behind them - thus will be assumed to be known to anyone who has a reasonable knowledge of cricket...

2/ each question must be a closed question, i.e. one that can be answered with either a simple “yes” or “no”. E.g. has this player ever played test cricket?

3/ one of the 2 game moderators will endeavour to answer with a yes or no within 24 hours.

4/ If the answer is yes, that player, and that player only, has up to 24 hours to ask a further question.

5/ If the answer is no, the next question will be thrown open to anyone apart from the person who asked previous question.

6/ only one person at a time can ask the questions - so leap in quick each time a new round starts or when the current player receives the answer no

7/ Following this process the person who correctly names the cricketer wins that round.

8/ Anyone who fails to observe these rules will be eliminated from that round..... Persistent offenders will be barred from thread………

9/ Random acts of trivia will occur from time to time, so it is always worth keeping in touch with each round and seeing if you can steal a win.

10/ Barmy Kev has relinquished title to the game and stood down from the elite panel of game moderators in order to take part in this version of the game.

11/ Edits to postings containing questions or guesses will be prohibited - if a contestant makes an edit, that contestant will be eliminated from that round.  There will be no amnesties or second chances for a breach of this rule.

12/ If a contestant makes an incorrect guess at the player's name, that contestant is prohibited from chiming in again that round unless or until another contestant makes an incorrect guess at the player's name.

13/ The only acceptable questions are those of a factual nature that the game moderators can reasonably be expected to answer accurately.  Facetious questions or questions that the game moderators in their absolute judgement deem to place unreasonable expectations upon them will receive the answer "unfair question" which will count as a "no" against the contestant.

14/ The first contestant to name five players correctly wins the magnificent Grand Slam e-trophy illustrated above.

15/ There might still be grey areas, but the game moderator's decision is final. And remember it is only a bit of fun.

Good luck

And to help start the ball rolling, I'm happy to tell you all that Player A is a male who has not retired from 1st class cricket.

Jeff Coleman
01/01/2008 18:54
Has he represented god's own county of Middlesex?

Ged
01/01/2008 21:58
No.

The Diamond ruled ok
02/01/2008 05:25
Is he English ?

Ged
02/01/2008 07:16
Yes.

The Diamond ruled ok
02/01/2008 07:27
Has he played Test cricket in any form ?

Ged
02/01/2008 07:57
I find the question ambiguous, as there is only one form of test cricket as far as I know, which is test cricket.

No.

Jeff Coleman
02/01/2008 09:40
Did he play first class cricket in 2007?

Ged
02/01/2008 10:07
Yes

Jeff Coleman
02/01/2008 10:27
Just to confirm following your answer to Diamond's question and previous answers. Can I confirm that he has not played test cricket, has not represented MCCC so, therefore, in line with Rule 1 has played international limited overs cricket?

Ged
02/01/2008 10:30
Actually, rule one would potentially allow the answer no, as I believe the definition in rule one could potentially be met without the player having played international limited overs cricket. But as it happens (and as was rather likely), Player A has played international limited overs cricket.

Yes.

MADAVAL

Just to thank you for the lavish and undeserving praise bestowed upon me by our most benevolent webmeister on my recent victory.
I was of course extremely lucky to win,and apparently my tactics were not to everyone's liking, but as you say Ged,a wins a win for all that, and I have had a little bask in the glory, and read all the messages of congratulations.
But new challenges lie ahead, and as we know many will seek to topple the Champion and snatch the crown from me.
I,m ready for them Ged,Bring 'em on,and the best of luck to all in THE GRAND SLAM.
P.S.Just off to give my trophy a little polish!

Jeff Coleman
02/01/2008 10:52
OK. I am just going to take a punt as I not sure how many fit the criteria and he was the first one who came to mind.

Is it Paul Nixon?

Ged
02/01/2008 10:59
No.

Under the new rules, JC, you are now prohibited from asking a further question or having another guess on this player unless/until someone else has an incorrect guess.

MADAVAL
02/01/2008 11:04
Has he a first-class batting average of 28 or more?

Ged

Quote:

P.S.Just off to give my trophy a little polish!

It's in the wrist action, Loverboy. Pesky things to polish, e-trophies.

As for "yer man's" batting average - Yes.

MADAVAL
02/01/2008 11:30
I just close my eyes and fantasise Ged,as I polish away with plenty of wrist action.
It should be pretty shiny by now.
Wa our man born outside England?

The Diamond ruled ok

On the grounds that I ain't gonna be around tommorow , Crappolla !!!! Ihad a pinned down man for player A , night night all .

Ged
02/01/2008 22:17
No, it isn't Crappolla. I don't believe he has played 1st class cricket this century.

Using the punctuation used, I am interpreting the question to stop at the question mark, with the note in brackets being for clarification.

(I make no comment on whether or not the answer would be different if the text were deemed to be a single question with the word "but" inferred).

Yes.

Objection,under rule 13 is Kev's not a facetious question?

comebackgatt
03/01/2008 15:47
I think I'm correct in allowing JC's question as he was not allowed to have another go for Player A once he made an incorrect guess. and he came back on Player B after Loverboy got a no.

RULE 12

12/ If a contestant makes an incorrect guess at the player's name, that contestant is prohibited from chiming in again that round unless or until another contestant makes an incorrect guess at the player's name.

I agree.

comebackgatt
03/01/2008 15:56
good, so it is back to JC for next question then.

Ged
03/01/2008 17:08
Comeback's interpretation of Rule 12, which I think is sufficiently clear, is the correct one.

The ball is in JC's court.

Jeff Coleman
03/01/2008 22:00
Gosh, and I thought this was just a nice little game.

Did he play in the 2007 ICC World Cup.

Ged
03/01/2008 22:37
Yus.

Jeff Coleman
04/01/2008 11:27
In that same world cup did he average over 30.0 with the bat?

Ged
04/01/2008 11:43
Yes indeedy.

Jeff Coleman
04/01/2008 18:34
Get ready LB this is where I hand it over.

In that same world cup did he captain his side?

Ged
04/01/2008 18:46
(Sm152)

Yes.

I think you've probably found your man, JC.

But bear on mind that Loverboy is not the only contestant who lurks in wait for a steal at this stage of a round of Yes/No.

Jeff Coleman
04/01/2008 19:40
DPMD Jayawardene

Ged
04/01/2008 19:47
Slamdunk. Well played JC.

On to Player C.

Jeff Coleman
04/01/2008 20:30
Cheers Ged

Has Mr. C represented Middlesex?

No.

The Diamond ruled ok

Is he English ?

Yes.

The Diamond ruled ok
05/01/2008 09:52
Is he an International capped player ?

Ged
05/01/2008 13:08
I'm not sure I entirely understand the question, so I shall reword the question and then answer it.

Has he played tests and/or international limited overs cricket at senior level?

Yes.

The Diamond ruled ok
05/01/2008 13:43
Right handed ?

Ged
05/01/2008 15:03
For future reference, in the absence of a more detailed question, I would answwer no if he either bowled or batted left handed.

Yes.

The Diamond ruled ok
05/01/2008 15:12
Average over 25 ? With the bat that is .

Ged
05/01/2008 15:20
Once again, for the benefit of newer players, when someone is so unspecific about this type of question, the assumption is that the reference is to first class average. And we use Cricinfo stats as our bible.

Yes.

The Diamond ruled ok
05/01/2008 15:25
Did he play in the County Championship in 2007 ?

Ged
05/01/2008 15:29
Yes indeedy.

Diamond's on a bit of a run, here.

The Diamond ruled ok
05/01/2008 15:34
I feel a slip occuring soon though .

Did he play in Division One of said County Championship season ?

Go one tell me I've" done a Bell" and dropped the ball.

Ged
05/01/2008 15:59
No - you haven't dropped the ball.

Yes - is the answer to your question.

The Diamond ruled ok
05/01/2008 16:08
Was his side in the Southern group of the FPT in 2007 ?

Ged
05/01/2008 16:13
No.

Jeff Coleman
05/01/2008 16:18
Does his county team play in the Roses Match?

Ged
05/01/2008 16:26
(Sm152)

Wouldn't be much of a Roses Match without his team.

Yes.

Jeff Coleman
05/01/2008 19:07
Does he have a better batting average than bowling average in his first class career?

Ged
05/01/2008 19:29
Unfair question.

Batting averages are better the higher they are.

Bowling averages are better the lower they are.

While the answer is obvious in the case of some players, it is not obvious in the case of all players. How does one rate Botham's batting average compared with his bowwling average, for example?

Jeff Coleman
05/01/2008 20:46
Sorry should have used higher rather than better. Hope I am still in play.

Ged
05/01/2008 22:36

Enjoy your lunch .

Ged
06/01/2008 16:22
Play.

Oh, you have played.

Yes.

The Diamond ruled ok
06/01/2008 16:31
Bit of a roll going here but I blew it yesterday on the Mal Loye one by going for the wrong Roses county .

So here we go , the one that will possibly blow me out or cut it to two or three players .

It's the biggun ... is he a left handed batsman ?

Ged
06/01/2008 16:33
Yes.

Tea.

The Diamond ruled ok
06/01/2008 16:45
You just had lunch !!!

Did he take a wicket in the LVCC last season ?

Squeeky bum time on this question !

Ged
06/01/2008 16:53
So I can't have a cup of tea after my lunch?

I'll interpret your question to mean "did he take one or more wickets in LVCC"?

Yes.

I think Diamond might have his man.

The Diamond ruled ok
06/01/2008 16:58

Yes, Player G played in the LVCC in 2007 for a county other than Middlesex.

For the avoifdance of doubt, once a contestant has won a particular round anyone can chime in with the first question for the next round. Usually it is the winner of the previous round as they are usually hanging around at the time, but ti doesn't have to be that person.

Yes.

adelaide
18/01/2008 17:56
Is he no longer a Middlesex player?

Ged
18/01/2008 19:11
Yes, no longer a Middlesex player.

Just to remind everyone that if you guess a name incorrectly, you are then out of that round unless or until someone else guesses the name incorrectly.

Also to remind people that you are your own worst enemy if you couch your questions in convoluted negatives. I actually thought that Adelaide's earlier question deserved a yes, but I could see why ComebackGatt attributed it with a no.

The Diamond ruled ok
18/01/2008 19:23
I did recall that rule Ged but can we all have a mod reminder on how recent a "retiree" will be . It's in the mix somewhere but this thing is huge(as the Bishop said to the actress).

adelaide
18/01/2008 23:27
On my planet (office) "Has the player never played test cricket?" would definitely not be considered convoluted.

But we're not on my planet!

I'm a bit confused now as to what the answer "No he has" actually meant. I would not object if it is not outside the rules to get it not unclear for not no-one!

Ged
19/01/2008 06:56
Comeback is correct in saying no, as the player has played test cricket. My point was that my first thought was "yes, he has played test cricket". Hence my warning about making questions phrased in the negative very clear.

Well played JC67 - you take the trophy.

Many, many congrats.

A suitable testimonial will go up on the published page for this game in the fulness of time - i.e. not during working hours.

Without running a poll on this, please comment on this thread if people want another tournament or if people feel that the game has run its course.

One idea that occurred to me is that no-one yet has achieved a hat-trick (Adelaide nearly did of late) so perhaps we can have a tourny oriented towards that.

Thoughts and comments welcome.

MADAVAL

Well done indeed JC67,I told you to keep plugging away.
I am of the feeling that this competition in it's current form has now run it's course which is not to imply it could not be reintroduced in the next close season.
Perhaps a more straightforward test of knowledge similar to Pete's Quiz at the moment would appeal to more, with a system designed to give all an equal chance to compete, and remove the frustration and element of pot-luck involved in the Yes/No game.

Jeff Coleman
21/01/2008 14:49
Thank you Ged and LB for your kind words and LB in particular in getting suspended so reducing the competition, but hold on a minute ''element of pot luck''.

More intuition and skill I would say!

Agree that the it might be put away until next close season as, although it appealed to me, it did not attract a high percentage of our readers.

What I meant JC,a game where you do not have to be logged on 24 hours a day in case you miss your chance, nothing wrong with your skill and intuition.
Mr ''10%'',I think you found out that there's more to yes/no than meets the eye.
I envisage something along the lines of one question a day.All answer by PM between an allocated time say 9am-9pm each day so all have an equal chance.
The question setter can set at any time after 9 in the evening for the next day,and after say ten rounds see who's top of the league.
I realise that this involves some work by the those totting up scores, but if the mods took turns in administering on a daily basis, should not be too taxing.
