The moment so many of you have been waiting for - the results of the 2008 Christmas Competition. Five intrepid competitors got full marks for their crossword entries and could only be separated by a fiendish tiebreaker. All of the tie-breaker entries and the answer to the puzzle are shown below.
The moment of truth has arrived folks – the results of the Christmas 2008 Prize Competition. Five intrepid people sent in complete answers: Bluebadge To win the prize, they needed to try the following tie breaker (courtesy of Barmy Kev); construct a cryptic crossword clue for Mark Ramprakash. The clue which, in the opinion of the judges, is the most amusing/fiendish/interesting wins the coveted (yet miniscule) prize. All five contestants had a go at the tie breaker. Janet suggested: Clue is 4, 10. First part of clue: Former German currency. Second part of clue: a wheelchair bound soldier uses this to get his money (Ramp, RA. Kash) Comebackgatt kept it simple: JC67 proposed: The panel of judges were agreed, however that the following two were the best entries. Just pipped at the post, Bluebadge’s contribution was deemed to be the most fiendish entry but, sadly for Bluebadge, not quite worthy of the prize: Mixed up Zulu leader after publicity previously surrounded vessel with a thousand sheep to get celebrity cricketer (4/10) So the winner is our visitor from Grockles.com, Wickham, who suggested: Take guard on slope - hark as defecting batsman is revealed (4, 10). The judges thought that the mixture of humour and intrigue made Wickham's the winning entry. So many congratulations to Wickham, who at the end of that tortuous process has won himself the most miniscule of prizes. Indeed well done to everyone who completed the crossword and also to the many who tried and had some fun with the game. Below is the completed crossword puzzle for those of you who are waiting to see that!

Nice to see some well-known usernames in the entries.
Perhaps someone, who is able, could post this result on Grockles?
By the way (this may be elsewhere on MTWD - sorry), I see from my local paper this morning that 7 across, after one season with Berkshire, has announced his retirement from all cricket due to his knee (and presumably many other!) injuries.
Well played, Johnno, a very good career which could have been even better without all those injuries. Somerset and Middx fans I'm sure wish you all the best.

Trying to come up with a clue for just one name brought home to me how challenging it must have been first to produce a set of names that would fit the grid and then to devise clues for as many as sixteen players.
