Boredom and Laughter In the Rain
Here's the July 2001 one

Beefy reports on yet another day of no cricket. We hear of his methods of relieving the boredom, a presentation of an award and a ticking off from a steward.
Well,I start from home at 9 in the morning and head to Uxbridge station for the train to meet Phil Taylor on. As train turns up the much needed rain turns up and its grim outside.
We arrive at HQ at about 10.30 and knew play would be delayed and got told by the scorecard seller it will be an 11.15 start 'weather permitting'.There are loads of school kids around as we realise its the clubs schoolday,and they take over the Mound Stand.
We go into the Pavilion,as was planned and park ourselves in the Long Room bar for coffee and muffins. Kimmy arrives with Spillage and his mate and we await for Lower Pavillion as he is due to give Murts the April player of month award.
I decide to take a slow walk around the Long Room and some of the Middle players come back in, others stay outside.It's 11.15 now and Chris Rogers goes out to join the umpires and the Worcs captain at the wicket, but not for long as they all turn round and walk back inside. Buck and Daryl Mitchell stand together in the Long Room having a good chat before making their way to each dressing room.
Didn't take long for the hover cover to go back over the wicket as drizzle returns and we decide to move upto the Members bar, where proudly Phil 'The Power' Taylor proudly shows Kimmy how he managed to clean his tie after spilling tea down it last time ,but getting so excited he throws coffee down it again. Good shot Phil!
It's now 11.35 and all covers are layed as the rain gets heavier. I'm getting really bored and notice they have got 3 colours in the carpet in the Members bar, it's getting that bad!!

At 11.50 its announced an early lunch will be taken at 12.30. We still sit in members bar and the weather report comes on the tele. Lower Pav looks at map and asks where London is. I reply and tell him its where its always been. Put it down to nerves about the player of month award?
Soon,the main vote is to visit the Long Room bar and take lunch, the famous Pavilion beef bap,salad,and help yourself buffet was taken. It was £9.50 very tasty and I was pleased to have my lunch with Colin Cowdrey, well I sat in front of his portrait and tried to have a chat but he didn't reply, I even offered him some rare beef,but didnt want it I presume, but he looked happy. ( Editors note- says a lot for the company he was with Beefy trying to talk to a portrait)
Time goes on,and we reach 3:40 in the afternoon, still nothing moving and we go to the Bowlers Bar. A great comment from a MCC member as I overhear him saying ' the worse thing we ever did was get those damn Olympicsobviously not impressed.
The most active person was Lower Pav who was getting in a state over the player of month award. We all get called to the Harris Garden where Murts is waiting with Fletch and a crowd of at least 9 to watch as LP gives the first MTWD award of the season. LP did himself proud and could tell he enjoyed doing this. Well done that man,and Murts was impressed with the award.
After that we all wet back to the Bowlers bar as there was nothing else to do really. The covers just stayed put so where else in the cricket world can you chill out and enjoy a beer,nowhere just the pavillion.
I go for a walk with Phil Taylor to the empty Long Room and we take a seat just to 'feel the room' so to speak. I then decide I must get a photo of the famous room. I then get my shoulder tapped by a steward as i get told ' sorry sir,but you can't take photos ' Whoops oh well got one ( shh!).
So,we go back tomorrow in plain clothes and hope for some play....

It really was a difficult day with no play,but felt sorry for the schoolkids,who went to see play and could only enetertain themselves.
A few hardy souls stayed back in the grandstand.
Its grey and cloudy today,i imagine the covers are still place.Just maybe though,just maybe................

I see you could not resist showing one of the pictures that somehow makes me look as though I have escaped from an asylum. My head looks like it is about to fall off and appears to be not part of the rest of my body. Perhaps it was too much wine.
I am now getting ready to go to Lords today. The forecast is no rain but grey cloud. Let us hope bad light is not an issue.
I keep looking at that awful picture.

I enjoyed watching Tim Murtagh be presented with the MTWD player of the month award for April.
We need to stop having days when we invite schools to Lord's, as the conditions always seem to be poor when it happens, and there never seems to be much play!
The colour of the sky doesn't look much different to yesterday, so that doesn't give me much hope. Hopefully the umpires will take the opinion that the colour of the sky has in fact improved.

Beefy, you should have asked Cowdrey about his role in the D'Oliveira affair. That would have wiped the smile off his face.
