seaxe Man provides over by over commentary of yesterdays victory
Monday 18th June Ageus Bowl - Hampshire Royals v Middlesex Panthers Fl T20.
Travel: Trouble free in the ZR along the M3 where I thought driving manners were impecable.
Weather: contrary to info I was told..... was sunny with white cumulus clouds all the way through to 9pm when the sun went down. Quite warm. The first time I had felt warm since the 'Tropic of Aigburth'.
Got to Holiday Inn about 2.45. Had a cup of tea and a shower before heading to the ground. Discovered that you can no longer access the top level of the Pavilion. A Hampshire steward informed me, reserved for corporate only. So went round to the Colin Ingleby McKenzie Stand and sat in the sun. Contrast heatwise to last Thurs at SJW where it was like mid winter. The Hants mascot is now Reggie the Royal which brought a certain amount of mirth from the locals.
For those of a curious nature. The ground sponsors Ageus, are apparently a firm of solicitors.
Teams: both were as per scorecard.
Hampshire Royals: JHK Adams, MA Carberry, JH Vince, ND McKenzie, SM Ervine, GJ Maxwell, AD Mascarenhas*. MD Bates+, Kabir Ali, DR Briggs, DA Griffiths.
Maxwell was making his debut for the Royals.
Middlesex Panthers: JL Denly, DJ Malan, PR Stirling, NJ Dexter*, GK Berg, JA Simpson+, OP Rayner, CJL Rogers, SP Crook, TS Roland-Jones, TMJ Smith.
Although carded at 8. Buck actually opened. A sensible move.
Hampshire won the toss and batted. That makes about 3 out of 19 for The Middle. The outfield looked fast and even with the rope pulled in, was still a large playing area. On paper Hants looked a strong side for T20. Later events proved to be otherwise. High up, so good view. Crowd eventually looked to be between 2 and 3 thousand. Scorecards 50p.
Powerplay overs. Royals
Over 1. Adams and Carberry opened for the hosts. Ollie opened from the Northern end to Carberry. He hit a four.
Over 2. Crook from Pav. 3 dot balls then Adams 4, who then top edged a six over fine leg. Floodlights warmed up.
Over 3. Stirlo from NE. He was hit for a 4 over mid on, then another to short 3rd man. Batter Adams.
Over 4. TRJ from Pav. Adams hit a straight 4, in trying to repeat the shot, he was then bowled neck and crop, middle stump, beaten for pace. This ended a fairly violent innings of 25. 32 for 1. Vince came in and opened his score with a 4.
Over 5. Berg from NE. His last ball was hit for 4.
Over 6. TRJ. Wicket. Carberry pulled over mid wicket. Taken on the boundary by Crook. 41 for 2. McKenzie in, then out ct at sq leg by Rayner. No score 42 for 3. Excellent over with two wickets.
So powerplay closed at 42 for 3.
Over 7. Ollie 4 to fine leg.
Over 8. Tom Smith from NE. A missfield for1, a wide, 50 up. Wicket. Ervine lashes to Joe Denly at short mid wicket and departs for 8. 53 for 4.
Over 9. Oliie. Hants nurdle. 7 runs off over.
Over 10. Smith. Concedes 5 runs.
Over 11. Ollie. A straight six by the debutant Maxwell. 12 off the over. Ollie finishes with 4-0-30-0.
Over 12. Smith. Wicket. Maxwell lashes to depp mid off and is taken by Crook for 15. 83 for 5. Locals now getting restive.
Over 13. Dex on from NE. 5 runs nurdled.
Over 14. Smith, two 4's bring up the hosts 100. Smith finishes with 4-0-30-2. 11 off last over.
Over 15. Dex.The announcer urges the crowd to get behind the lads. Stumps saved a few. Helicopter shot. 6 off over.
Over 16. Berg concedes 4 to fine leg. Most of these runs were being scored by Vince btw.
Over 17. Dex. Mascarenhas takes a DLF maximum. 10 off the over.
Over 18. TRJ. Wicket. Rojo takes Masca out bowled for 21. He then concedes a 4 to Kabir Ali. 123 for 6.
Over 19. Berg. Vince reaches 50 with a 2. A wide, 4 to fine leg and another 4. This takes Royals to 148 with Vince holding their innings together.
Over 20. TRJ. 150 up with a wide and hots total up 9 for the over. TRJ finishes with the excellent figures of 4-0-25-4. For the hosts, Vince finished on 64no and Kabir Ali 12 no.
Going on the previous two matches, 158 looked a tough ask. As many have menshed, the batting is lightish and we are probably a frontline batter short.
So, the tension in your reporter was considerable as we sought a first victory.
Panthers: Power play overs
Over 1. Buck opened with Denly. Denly took strike to Mascarenhas. Got away with a leading edge. Light was in between, as floodlights kicked in. 4 to Buck offdrive, who then straight drove for 4.
Over 2. Joe D faced Kabir Ali. Wide. Wicket, Joe was unlucky this time. It appeared that his block ran back and dislodged the off bail. 14 for 1. Stirlo came in and opened his score with an offdriven 4.
Over 3. Buck. Wicket. Buck drives to mid off for 11. 18 for 2. Not the start we wanted. Dawid came in and started with a 3.
Over 4. Things started to look up. Bowler Ali. Stirlo takes a six, then 4 to Mala.
Over 5. Stirlo 4, 7 off over.
Over 6. Mala 2, 4, 4. 50 up.
At conclusion of powerplay, 42 for 3 plays 52 for 2. So we had a small cushion.
Over 7. 5 off the over and Mascarenhas finishes with 4-0-24-1. He looked their most threatening bowler.
Over 8. Spinner Briggs comes on. We nurdle 5 runs.
Over 9. Mala, He missed the 1st ball and sends the 2nd for 6. 50 partnership.
Over 10. Briggs to Stirlo 6,4. Stirlo was by now outscoring Mala who was playing a more passive role.
Over 11. Maxwell to Mala 2,4.
Over 12. A couple of 4's to Stirlo.
Over 13. Mala brings up our 100, Stirlo 4,2,1 brings up his 50. 34 balls, 5 4's, 2 6's.
Over 14. Stirlo adds 7 more to his score.
Over 15. Stirlo was dropped at fine leg. The 100 partnership comes up. 8 from over. At this point we had a cushion of 16 runs over hosts. 106 v 122.
Over 16. Wicket Mala drives to cover. A great knock of 46 in a century partnership. 125 for 3. Still a bit to do.
Over 17. Stirlo is finlly taken at fine leg. A tremendous knock of 71 which rightly won him the MOM award. 135 for 4.
Over 18. Dex and Bergie now had 18 balls to get 23. This over got us 6 runs closer.
Over 19. This went Bergie 1, Dex 2,1, Berg 1, Dex 4, which brought the scores level on 157.
Over 20. The field was now in the 30 yard circle. 1st ball from Ali to Berg was a dot, raising home hopes. The 2nd however, he despatched for a straight 4 and victory by 6 wickets. Well done lads. Worth the trip.
Observations.
Tonight there was a more discernible batting plan for the chase. Buck opened and although he did'nt progress, it gave the batting line up a better balance.
Goes without saying the 107 partnership between Mala/Stirlo set up victory. Mala played a more passive role. The Ageus is a big ground in which to defend.
Dex used the Ed Smith style, constantly rotating the bowlers. The ends justified the means.
I was glad to have made the trip. Up and running at last. Looking fwd to Essex game on Thurs at Lord's C'mon The Middle.
PS: the announcer said that only Hampshire members could use the Pav Bar. Being the only Middx member present as far as I could see. I don't reckon I would have overcrowded the bar. However headed for hotel bar for a pint of Boddington. A bit pricey at 3.75.

Great report and good for you for going.
One thing I find a little annoying. The announcer saying only Hampshire Members can use Pavilion Bar.
I believe I am correct in saying when we play at Lord's members of the away team can always use our Pavilion. Perhaps this courtesy should not be extended to those clubs that do not have reciprocal arrangements. We of course had the same problem when we went to Taunton a couple of years ago. However I do appreciate we have greater space and facilities than most other grounds though I would have thought there would have been plenty of room yesterday.
Leaving that aside hopefully this win will give the lads confidence for the rest of the campaign

Btw. One omission I should have mentioned. There was a minute's silence observed for Tom Maynard at the start.
