Beautiful setting

Barmy kev gives a mainly pictorial account of his trip to Chesterfield where all was mostly good apart from the result.

My trip to Chesterfield was planned for Monday and Tuesday, maybe Wednesday depending on various states.

Monday morning, I arrived at St Pancras in plently of time for journey up to catch 9.30 train. I got confused between platform 2A and 2B and ended up catching10am fortunately no extra cost. On arrival to ground and after lunch game going nowhere for us TRJ and change of ball trigerred a massive collapse with a fifer. The Middlesex faitful were vocal and was a case of day 2b or not Toby. Our vocal presence was acknowledged retrospectively by Derbyshire fan.

I was also honoured to sit next my early years hero Middlesex CCC legend Roland Butcher and chat with him. He was very cold having recently returned from Barbados.  He was staying at same hotel as me and was not sure if he appreciated my comment on whether he has Roll and Butter for breakfast.

Tuesday should I book another night thinking it might go four days with thrilling finish. It seemed like it might, until a unnecessary run out and stupid shot by Max Holden just before lunch.  Derbyshire chased runs with consumate ease at end. Dropping Masood at first slip when game in the balance did not help.

No overnight stay. On weary journey walk to station, I was able to capture two apt photos.

I got a first edition of The Grauniad when I was on a school exchange trip to Paris (bought specifically for the cricket scores) and RB was referred to as Roland Butter throughout (probably deliberate sabotage as there was regularly union unrest in those days).

Hope you enjoyed the company, if not the result.
