Tidying up the end of the season...
Round 17
With three teams in for promotion, and leaders Nottinghamshire fresh from a thumping at Worcestershire, it was looking like a tense few days for supporters of the teams involved, especially as the weather forecast was mixed.
Nottinghamshire entertained Durham at Trent Bridge, won the toss and decided to bat. At the close of play on day one, Notts were 276 for 2, with Haseeb Hameed on 115 and Matthew Montgomery unbeaten on 101. On day two, Montgomery went on to score 178, captain Steve Mullaney made 136 and Lyndon James was not out on 164. Their total of 662 for 5 declared not only secured four batting points but appeared to take a win out of the hands of Durham. Not that Durham looked likely to match their hosts score. Reduced to nine batters after David Bedingham dislocated his shoulder on day two, they managed a mere 207 in reply giving Notts a further three bowling points. Strangely, Notts chose to bat again with a healthy lead of 455 and rattled off another 121 runs before declaring. At the end of day three, Durham had already lost two of the nine wickets Notts needed for victory and the title. They completed the job around about lunch on day four: Durham all out for 114 and celebrations all round Trent Bridge.
Nottinghamshire (23 pts) beat Durham (2 pts) by 462 runs
Second place Middlesex travelled to Worcestershire along with their abacus, needing at least a draw and probably maximum points to secure promotion. More on this game here on MTWD. Stevie Eskinazi scored 115, Toby Roland-Jones took 4 wickets with the ball and scored 55 with the bat. Yes, Middlesex won promotion to Division One; but you knew that, right?
Worcestershire (11 pts) drew with Middlesex (16 pts)
Third-placed Glamorgan travelled to Sussex trailing Middlesex by 9 points. They won the toss and elected to bat, then promptly stormed off in a batting-points chase They finally declared on 533 for 9 off just 106 overs with maximum batting points in the bag. Shubram Gill scored 119 runs, Chris Cooke bettered that with 141, They then tore into Sussex and dismissed them all for 258 off 65 overs. Captain Tom Haines carried his bat for 108. Glamorgan enforced the follow-on but by that time news had reached them that Middlesex had also earned maximum points and therefore the almost certain draw would be enough for Middlesex to be promoted, even if Glamorgan won. Whether this had any effect on their efforts will never be known, suffice to say that Sussex put on 328 for the first wicket, that of Ali Orr who was run out for 198. Haines went on to score his second century in a day (177). Danial Ibrahim was unbeaten on 100 exactly when Sussex declared on 554 for 8 for the agreed draw. Andrew Salter took 5 for 138 off 54 overs.
Sussex (11 pts) drew with Glamorgan (16 pts)
Nothing to play for as Derbyshire hosted Leicestershire. Derby won the toss and put Leicestershire in to bat. 75 overs later they were all out for 249, Sam Connors taking 5 for 51 off 17 overs. Derby replied by losing their first wicket at 251 and their second at 323. They finally declared on 568 for 9, Billy Godleman top-scoring on 158 closely followed by Luis Reece with 116. The good news for Leicester was England Under-19 all-rounder Rehan Ahmed taking a maiden five-wicket haul: 5 for 114 off 28 overs. Batting again, Leicestershire racked up 405 for 7 with Ahmed scoring 122: the first time a Leicestershire player had scored his first hundred and take his maiden five-wicket haul in the same match. There’s a stat for everything...
