Beckenham Beckons
Will the man do it again?

To Kent and the festival ground of Beckenham for some Sunday slogfest. Away from the County Ground we may see our batrsmen prosper after a few erratic showings in Taunton. Compton found a little form and Zander de Bruyn kept pace with Kieron Pollard...but what about on foreign shores? The side remain the same as that aginst Gloucestershire...same result we hope.
v Kent T20 @ Beckenham Sunday 20th June 2010
Kent have won the toss and decided to field so we take the first half at the wicket. Compton and Trescothick open in an unchanged side from that of Friday;
Trescothick, Comption, Hildreth, de Bruyn, Pollard, Trego, Buttler, Thomas, Phillips, Kartik, Turner
It is hoped that we bat as well and bowl better than the front end of the wicket or we will need a big score to defend. We start smartly enough and are going at 10 per over but the skipper's woes with the bat cotinue as he is caught by Blake off Stevens with only 12 to his name. James Hildreth takes over.

As predicted on another thread, Kent opening batsman Joe Denly misses this afternoon`s T20 match against Somerset at Beckenham with a calf injury.
James Goodman, a 19-year-old all-rounder, is added to the 11 who lost to Surrey under D/L on Friday:
Key, van Jaarsveld, Northeast, Jones, Blake, Stevens, Mahmood, Tredwell, Coles, Cook, Bandara, Goodman.

The most obvious danger man is Darren Stevens. I'm not sure if there is anyone anywhere in the land that has had a better overall season, thus far, than Stevens?
The twin spin attack of Bandara and Tredwell are, IMO, liable to be difficult to get away if the track is slow (as I am expecting it to be,) as well.
On slow pitches, sheer power is at a premium as batsmen that rely on timing tend to be neutralised. Stevens is just such a powerful man. Of course, we also have a few guys that can really bat with real power in the form of Banger, Pete and a certain Mr Pollard.
I'm off now and will send in updates/comments to boards as the local 3G connnection allows.

In my seat at long-on, the closest I could get to behind the arm, without having my view obstructed by the blotting machine.
The clouds are lifting, the sun is coming out and I predict cidery interludes.

Kent have won the toss and elected to field. I'm sat at square so will also try to post some updates. If you haven't been to Beckenham before it reminds me of the Recreation Ground at Bath, but with a much flatter outfield, bigger boundaries and generally better facilities as one might expect from a permanent ground.

Zander is padded up already. We had four dancing girls and all 22 players forced into a choreographed hand shaking before the start.
Fine first over from Stevens, but undermined by terrible fielding at 3rd man. 4-0

Tresco caught at deep mid wicket during a poor 4th over from Mahmood which had already yielded plenty. An unnecessary shot in the circumstances, pretty much picked the guy out.

Some heat in the sun now. Clouds are lifting higher and a lot more blue sky about. Somerset's batting is really picking up. The outfield seems significantly quicker at the "AGod end" compared to the other end.
Pollard bowled, all ends up by Bandara who is looking very tricky. A lot rest on Hildreth now, who needs to go on to a big score. The loss of Compton to a run out was annoying because he was looking really good.
Jos was utterly brilliant. They did not really know where to bowl to him. They gave away 6 or 7 in misfields.
I think the outcome of this will depend on whether we get their big hitters, Stevens and Mahmood before they get set. Taking wkts did not seem to be easy, zero seam movement.

Only an hour and eight minutes into our innings, and WCG is already querying our batters` performance, in what in the end turned out to be the second highest first innings score in today`s six matches.
Surely not everything we do is so miserable that it is `another under par performance`? There must be some pleasure somewhere.

Somerset are bowling very tightly indeed. They seem like a different team to the one I saw bowling against Gloucs at Taunton on Friday. Buttler just took a brilliant catch and Kent are really on the ropes.
Rob Key looked a broken man as he walked off at the end of the Somerset innings. I know why now.
No complaints whatsoever about Somerset's performance so far this match.

Sounds like a good game. Good to see James doing well away from Taunton again. Also that Ben continues to fire with the ball.

Get Mahmood early and not only would this game be over, but we could significantly improve our run-rate!
Funny, Padded Up, I also went to see the guys coming off and observed Key looking downbeat, along with most of his team. That did encourage me!

Didn't get his hat trick alas. But Somerset have kept this so tight in the field even though the match was beyond doubt some while ago. The caught part of Pollard's caught and bowled was superb. This has been a magnificent performance by Somerset all the way through. WELL DONE!

The only fly in my ointment is that some month and a half after Rose announced that we are "Somerset" the blokes on our own local radio insist on continually calling us "The Sabres". I e-mailed them - not mentioned surprisingly.
As one of them said however, this was a "shallacking".
Rose interviewed in the interval mentioned that White is not a certainty. We have the legal stuff done but will look at the position after about 10 games and see whether he is a sensible addition or not.
He also said what I personally would agree with - the group stage of this competition is at least 4 games too long.

Fantastic win, and not a game of "hit and giggle" as this format is so often derided. Somerset won by batting well on a wicket that was not easy, then keeping the bowling tight and working hard in the field. Somerset won because they played good cricket, not because our sloggers slogged harder than their sloggers.
And credit too to KCCC who provided a great venue to watch cricket at.

Great to see that James and Josh were on form. From commentary it seems that we batted, bowled and fielded better than Kent. A surefire recipe for success.

Ben Phillips must have been pleased with his 2-24 in four overs. He went to school in Beckenham and learned his cricket wth the local club.
Must have been our best T20 performance since the sf win versus the same opponents last season!
They were never at the races with the bat. It was a slowish track, but did not seem to be much help for the bowlers but we really turned the screws on them.
I was surprised that Key put us in and I now wonder if he's wondering why we did it!
As and when we actually win a toss in this comp, I stand by my suggestion that we bat first and rely on our excellent bowling and fielding unit.

It sounds like a very professional win today and that we are now in the kind of position in the table we wouold have expected at the start of the tournament. I am already beginning to wonder whether we shall be talking one day of a third great Somerset-born batsman alongside Gimblett and Trescothick.
I can understand the enthusiasm, but don't think todays can be called a great match. Within three or four overs of Kent's innings there was only going to be one winner, which is what can often happen with T20 matches. The Middlesex, Hampshire amd Gloucestershire matches were far more entertaining, as was, for the wrong reason, the Essex match.

Our boys certainly looked like they are enjoying their cricket today. Everyone knows that it is a condition of membership of the England soccer team that one should deeply resent having to forgo a month's holiday to play for one's country and that one should hate every minute of it.

Randomly saw the team getting coffees on the way back home today so I went over and congratulated them on a really superb performance. I can confirm that James Hildreth is an incredibly nice bloke.
