So, undefeated in the Championship (the only side so to be now) and coming off an excellent win at home to Durham, we go on the road to Birmingham. The skipper has two tons and the batting backed him up but the bowling is blowing hot and cold in different formats and some will worry which unit will turn up tomorrow. What will Marcus choose to do for this game?
It is hard to see The Boss making too many changes to the side that whupped Durham by 7 wickets in a game many thought we had given up before the middle of the last day.
The performance of the skipper and his new opening partner Johan Myburgh must mean that they will open once again and the support of the middle order Aliviro Petersen, Nick Compton and the (hopefully) rapidly improving James Hildreth basically writes itself in. Pete Trego and Craig Kieswetter also really put themselves on the team sheet but then it gets messy. Lewis Gregory has created a big hole after his great start to the season followed by his injury just as he makes himself almost indispensable in the bowling line-up. Indications are that Craig Meschede is not yet ready to take up his role iin the side even though he played with the seconds at the end of last week - he didn't bowl and we need that part of his game. George Dockrell is taking wickets but is also as likely to get hammered out of the attack but he seems to be first choice - though some are starting to think Max Waller? Maybe what happened to spinners againstt Kent on Friday that might have gone on the back burner. The contrasting performances of the Overton twins in the last game suggest Craig will be on the teamsheet for definite after his five fer set up the win. but his brother? Then again, do we have a choice? Is ther someone else to join Alf with the new ball? Still no sign at all of Adam Dibble and little word on whether Steve Kirby is ready to be considered. If they are not then Jamie to play whether people think he is the man we need at the moment or not. Two places in a side up for grabs? But how many men are able to stand up and grab them. At the moment it seems like about two and a half so the side may pretty much stay the same for this one.
Day 1
That is the way it worked out as the weather suggested an erratic and unpredictable 4 days in the Midlands. Chopra won the toss and inserted us but we didn't get onto the pitch until well intoo the afternoon. When we did we started semi-solidy, losing Myburgh with the score in the 20's. However, the undeniable opener for England at the present moment (oh that it was possible) Marcus T was steadying the ship almost immediately and dispatching the Warwickshire bowlers wiith the distain of old whenever they strayed off line or length. His 84 (and it was a surprise when he played down the wrong line and lost his off stump) was masterful while we had a little wobble after him as Alviro came and went in quickish time for 12.
103 for 3 was not all that wonderful. However watching Compton and Hildreth in real form for the rest of the afternoon made up for that I am sure. They finished the day on 72 each and their partnership of 132 took the score to 237 for 3 with three Somerset batsmen passing 50 and more to come on Day 2.
The forecast does not souund al that encouraging so Somerset have to apply themselves effectively when they get on the pitch and make the Bears chase this game. There could be enough time to turn this into another win IF the batting maintais itself and gets motoring towards a 400+ score. It is probably likely that the rain will make this difficult but we need to do the best we can and keep pushing for the big points rather than settling for the safe ones. It is unlikely that we will be forced into a situation whre we could lose this but if the opportunity presents itself to do more than draw we HAVE to take it.
More if and as the game unfolds... enjoy yourselves all those people travelling
Sunday (thanks Wickham) in Birmingham we look to continue along the path that has seen us undefeated up to now in the Championship.
The excellent and organised defeat of Durham in a weather affected four dayer conflicts almost totally with the schoolboy bowling performance of the T20 13 over bash against Kent a day later.
Wonder which one we are pondering on going into this match?

Grockle - Pete took the new ball vs Durham anyway so there isn't a question of finding somebody other than J Overton to share the new ball with Alf.
J Overton could simply be replaced with an extra batsman which is what I would do as we'd still have Alf, Pete, Craig O, George and JM as bowling options.
Edgbaston usually favours two modes of bowling - swing and spin. Obviously Jamie O isn't primarily a swing bowler. So when you factor in lack of form as well then I don't think we can justify keeping him in unless, perhaps, the powers that be think he's close to clicking.
So you'd go in with Pete, Alf and Craig only? Jo and George to back up? I'd be nervous of Craig's fragility so soon after coming back but maybe the work against Durham tested that out.
I'm sorry but the decision to give Adam another year contract seems dafter and dafter to me as this season goes on. If we can't get him on the pitch when we have these problems, what was the plan?
The extra bat? Chris? Alex? or even James or Max as batting allrounders. Has Max done enough to suggest that as an option? His fielding wouldn't be a problem for sure.
If Max were to be given a chance somewhere other than on a specially prepared home strip, then the two venues for our next two away games would be at the top of my list of places to do so...Edgbaston and Old Trafford.
Having said that I notice that Warks vs Yorks was abandoned without a ball bowled in the T20 so unless I mis-read the fixture and the game was in Leeds, then the sort of volume of rain needed to force the abandonment of even a Sky game (!)might suggest that Edgbaston may start abnormally damp tomorrow.
If they want somebody who could provide an extra seam option as back-up in case anything goes wrong with CO, then they could give Josh Davey a senior Somerset debut.
Nervous of going in with only 3 seamers at a damp Brum. I think they'll stick with Jamie but I think I'd go with Davey I have to say - gotta find out sometime and we signed him up so it maybe 'what are you made of' time.
I see that there is also a severe weather warning in place for the West Midlands today so however wet it was last night, it may get wetter still today. Do they still have the brumbella?
I really liked the balance of the Durham team, JM opening and back up spinner works for me.
I am worried re Jove at the moment but he has something, we just need to decide what we are asking him to do.
We seem to just tell him to bowl fast and short, put 3 normally 4 men on boundary and he has almost no chance of keeping it tight, its bounced wickets or easy runs.
I'd stick with same top 10, although Cove just has to bat 8 not Alfie, then George 10 and either Jove at 11 or Craig M if fully fit now (although clearly 8 or 9) not 11.
We need 20 wickets and I think with our attack we need 5+JM, not 4+JM.
Looking forward to a full 1st 2 days in attendance and at worst maintaining our unbeaten start. Middlesex not playing this week so we could be top by Wednesday night.....
Site says we've added Alex and James to make a squad of 13 so have to assume it will be same team as Durham.
Guess either could come in for George or Jamie but don't see that.
Jamie is somewhat of a passenger at the moment batting at 11 and being very sparingly used as a bowler but I'm sure we are hoping he'll click soon
As discussed above and totally missed by me I would have expected Davey to be included if they weren't going to go with Jamie
Unless they intend to give Alex a run out just in case. Wonder, if they picked him, whether they would give him the gloves. Has he been keeping for the seconds or has James?
Varun Chopra (Captain)
Tim Ambrose (Wicket Keeper),
Keith Barker
Rikki Clarke
Laurie Evans
Sam Hain
Ateeq Javid
Richard Jones
Jeetan Patel
William Porterfield
Boyd Rankin
Ian Westwood
Chris Wright -
Somerset squad- Marcus Trescothick (capt), James Hildreth (vice capt), Alex Barrow, James Burke,Nick Compton, George Dockrell, Craig Kieswetter, Johann Myburgh, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Alviro Petersen, Alfonso Thomas and Pete Trego.
Very annoying but not entirely unexpected. Poor forecast for Tue and Wed as well although games on the Eastern side of the country currently face an even worse forecast for those two days.
Widespread delays everywhere outside of the SE. Most of the other wet outfield delays are only for 30 mins, though, but a couple of other games are currently being actively rained off.
"There will be no play before an early lunch (12.30) at Edgbaston after heavy rain over the the last few days. The umpires will inspect at noon.
It’s dry at present and all the covers have been removed. The groundstaff are continuing to work on the outfield, but it looks very wet.
Boyd Rankin is back in the Warwickshire squad and is competing with Richard Jones for the last place in their side. Somerset have included both Overtons and George Dockrell."
I think George's comment relates only to "the squad," i.e. the 13 players. Because it seems unlikely that George would have the away XI but not the home one and he clearly doesn't have the home one as he says Rankin is competing with Jones for the last place in their side.
Was going to put this on Somerset news thread but a there is speculation on this one about injuries I'll post it here.
Craig Meschede is progresing well in recovery from his side strain and was due to play for the 2nds in their T20 matches v Worcs on Thurssday as a batsman only (he did - made a 4-ball duck and took a catch). I think they'll take it very carefully with his return to bowling.
Plan for Steve Kirby is he'll have a couple of matches with the 2nds before we'll see hm with the 1st team.
Adam Dibble has re-injuredhis same hamstring so back to square one there then (presumably doing a bit too much before he was ready)
Re dibble I rate him but if we can't get him fit then it's money we can spend elsewhere. We were told he was injured at end of SA tour. That was more than 3 months ago!!
I've given up all hope of Dibble ever being fit for any significant period of time, I'm afraid. Sadly his body just seems so brittle.
With some of the shoddy bowling that we've seen in T20 so far, then I'd have thought that Kirby might, usefully, make a return in one or more of those games before being seriously considered in the CC?
Did someone say Middlesex aren't playing this week? They are - but because they have a T20 match today their CC match v Sussex at Merechant Taylor's schol doesn't start till tomorrow.
AGod I've given up all hope of Dibble ever being fit for any significant period of time....
I find that very reassuring, given how often you completely wrote off our chances of winning the four-day match against Durham. Your pessimistic predictions are increasingly to be relied on for their inaccuracy. I hope you are also expecting Somerset to be relegated this year.
And if the forecasts are right, not starting today will not be good news for Middx.
I've no idea where Merchant Taylor's school is and have no memory of Middx playing CC matches there. I see that today's T20 game is at Northwood, so maybe that's where this school is situated.
Patel on which is very unsurprising after he got Tresco four times in the CC last season (although this point seems to have escaped the commentators, who seem surprised to see him).

Delighted to read that Bobstan played against MT over fifty years ago. He (MT) must have been minus twelve at the time, which hardly seems fair.
The real MT has yet again demonstrated today that he is the greatest living Englishman - and needs on 477 in the second innings to secure his 1000 by the end of May.
I'd think we can happy enough with that for the session.
Having said that, to be honest, it didn't sound as though the ball was doing all that much. Certainly batting sounded far less tough than either at Hove or in the first innings at home to Durham.
I'm now worried LoL because AG has predicted us NOT being relegated this early in the season.
Have to agree with him ref Dibble though. I don't rate him because I haven't seen him bowl a ball in any kind of first team run for so long now it would be pointless assessing him on previous form.
His body just seems incapable of standing up to the demands of professional cricket.
He presently makes Richard Johnson look like an injury free perennial of the side some 10 years ago.
What a difference a year make, fighting all the way.
We had a visit by six or seven players on Gimblett's Hill during a break in play in the last match, I was saying to them it doesn't matter if we miss out on the odd batting point if we go on and get a decent score as the result, we then have something to ball at.

This format may or may not be rubbish: I neither care for it greatly, nor despise it utterly.
But the one thing tonight may have acheived is giving our VC an opportunity to hit himself into some form.
On to Edgbaston!

Come on lads, now is not the time for bickering, when we have managed the start to the season we have been seeking for years. Get behind the team - I'm sure they read these posts, and they deserve better than that. We have managed to get where we are despite injuries, and the results should even improve if past seasons are a guide. Book your digs at Headingly for the last CC game of the season - it should be very interesting.
Classy, determined and at times downright brilliant.
We move on serenely, the holy grail shining brightly before us like a glimmering star.
Believe in....always believe.
Nick is a proper batsman.Lovely to see JAmes in the runs and remembering that we were put in the boss got us off to a good start, it has been continued and we will be much happier today than Warwick.(in their rural rather than city mode) We must build on it tomorrow.
Onwards and upwards lads
Tim Ambrose, Warwickshire`s second highest run scorer this season behind Ian Bell, left the field shortly before the end at Edgbaston today with a calf injury. His place behind the stumps was taken by second team `keeper Peter McKay.
I was born in Harrow but lived in Northwood from 6-18 years old. Played for Northwood Town CC in the Herts League and used to winter net at Merchant Taylors. Tidy little ground, part of a big private school. Now live in Tufnell Park but going to take my lad to the county game up there on Wednesday (weather permitting).
Solid effort from the lads today - hopefully the rain avoids Birmingham tomorrow and we can get 450+ on the board.
Hope the weather in Birmingham's as lovely as in Newcastle. If we bat as we did yesterday and at the same speed we shall get to 350 and a fourth point about lunch time.We need to quicken a lot to get the 5th point but I would rather miss it and bat Warwick out of the game and leave the bowlers to do the business. Are we allowed to catch up the 21 overs lost yesterday?
Very poor forecast for the remaining days of this round of games, all over the country. I think there must be a low pressure system to the East of the UK as the futher East you go, the more dire the forecasts are.
For our game it looks as though we may get this morning's session in without threat of interruption but that that may be the last session without the threat of frequent interruption in the match.
If the morning goes well for us then ourselves and Notts may be the relative 'winners,' of this round, taking 9 points apiece to lower totals for the other sic participants.
AGod It was Yorkshire with whom we were level, not Notts.
Notts began the day about 7 points behind us so cannot possibly be level with us unless Beeb table was wrong.
I was well aware that at the start of the day we were level with Yorkshire (on 71) and wrote my first posting on the subject after we gained a batting point and moved ahead. Later I was misled by the table on Cricinfo, which had Notts on 68 and us still on 71. I assumed no updates had been made for either team and so added 4 batting points to the 68 Notts appeared to have.
Why Cricinfo updates for some teams during the course of a day and not others is a mystery. I see that we are still apparently on 71 today.
It's not a mystery. They update at the close of the innings I think. Notts Durham end of first innings Yorks Lancs Warwick and Somerset still in first innings under 110 overs
All matches in both divisions are currently in progress but, despite all the inclement weather that is supposed to be around, I believe i'm correct in saying that not one wicket has fallen in any of the eight matches this morning.

"Hello from Edgbaston. Warwickshire have taken the new ball here, but Nick Compton laughs in the face of new balls and simply tucks them off his hips for a single or lets them pass harmlessly outside off stump. It’s hard to think of a man who is harder to dismiss in English cricket right now.
Warwickshire bowled well yesterday - though not so well so far this morning - but Somerset’s batting was just a bit too good. Hildreth and Compton might well, in normal circumstances, have earned their side a match-defining platform.
It’s all futile, though. The weather forecast shows a band of rain so big and so tall and so wide that it cannot be escaped. This match, I fear, is sentenced to a watery death.
There's no Tim Ambrose for Warwickshire. He requires a scan on his calf - the bottom of his leg; not a baby cow - and may be out for some time."
So we appear to be in, or about to be in, a situation where the vast majority of our main batsmen are in decent nick at the same time. If the weather gives us the scope, we can hopefully pile up a lot of batting bonus points over the next few fixtures.
And, LoL, I've no idea why they don't simply display the batting and bowling points. If they think that not everyone wants to see them they could simply have a default position of not showing them and an "expand table" widget that would produce the full version of the table.
Batting suddenly sounds much more difficult. So we should surely think about declaring either when the 110 overs are up, or at the instant that 350 off 110 is no longer achieveable..
I think with the forecast a it is for today and the remaining 2 dyays of the match then declaring after 110 overs would be a good option. Declaring befoe this time could be viewed as a tactic to restrict the opportunity of Warks to gain bonus points so would be risky.
Evidently, we're not going to declare, though, and just bat on.
One would have thought that the 5 for 66 that Warks have managed to take today would have encouraged us to get bowling.
Although Chopra normally has a field day against us, he has not been in great form. Woakes, Bell and Trott are all unavailable and who knows whether Ambrose will be able to bat?
I'd suggest we're already at the stage, in terms of time, where any requirement for us to bat again would pretty much rule out a win. The only reasonably realistic win scenario is to enforce a follow-on, which means every run is vital.
FE - I was thinking about the new ball, but Alf and Craig O both bowled so well last week that I think I'd promote the other Overton ahead of Trego with the new ball.
But if either CO or Alf don't click quickly, maybe we should quickly go to Jamie and see if runs can translate to bowling confidence/rhythm.
All the more remarkable given that he had made precisely 2 runs in his previous 5 first-class innings (and indeed matches as he's not been required to bat twice recently).
Well played Jove and Cove. Stick them straight on for 3 overs each. It must be confusing to bowl at twins... you never know which one is facing.
I reckon there should be about 45 overs so I would happily settle for 130 for 5 at the close.
Agree Grizzly - also what gives - four bowlers used but not a single over for Jove - something funny going on I reckon - despite his 50 the guy is played as a front line bowler so unless he has picked up an injury why is he third or fourth change for heavens sake ?
Surprised he hasn't bowled at all. As I said at the close of our innings, I'd have given him the bew ball while his tail wiuld have unquestionably been up. I 'm a big believer in confidence/momentum, and it would have veen worth a punt, IMHO. Nothing ventured, and all that……
The fact he hasn't bowled at all suggests, however, that the "brains trust" simply don't believe a damp slow pitch will suit him.
And evidence suggests that when the ground 'doesn't suit him' he is presently something of a liability in terms of lack of control over line and especially length
Well it's not because we only have 11 fit guys because Barrow could obviously have played if we were content with 'only,' four front line bowlers.
Declining to pick Barrow implies that we feel a need for five front line bowlers. In which case we should surely expect that the fifth one will see at least some usage as and when we get back out there. But....if a slow pitch does not suit Jamie then it's surely even less likely to suit him with an older ball?
Back from a very pleasant 2 days in Brum.
Really is an impressive ground now, really like Edgbaston it's big but has character as its not just 1 big bowl.
Stewards I found a bit fussy but they did have some clowns to deal with!
One numpty sat in section behind bowlers arm, when asked to move he argued he wasn't doing any harm or moving, right clown!
As for the cricket, Tres was fluent, shock when he got bowled. Alviro lost the plot trying to hit Patel over top 1st over after lunch getting caught mid on. Hildy and Compo were superb, contrasting styles but equally impressive. Today Jove and Cove were great, Jove hit so cleanly, wasted at 11 below George. Also baffling why Alfie 8 ahead of Cove. Cove has batting potential, we need to expose him higher to test him.
Jove I don't think is real batter but has potential to do what he did todaym ala Johnson, he's a clean hitter.
George is the teams no11, he has very few shots and seems to get under 5 virtually every innings.
Bowling was tough on that pitch, agree it was odd Jove didn't get a bowl but think it was just circumstance of alfie + tregs opening pre tea, then cove and tregs after, sure another few overs would have seen him on had the rain not came.
One point on yesterday, I arrived at 10am, weather was dry and windy, as I walked in I was told inspection 12.30am!
There was no obvious water on outfield and covers were completely off the whole playing surface. One or 2 blotters went around now and again but just seemed no urgency at all.
I'd suggest if there had been 24000 in for a ODI, there is no way it would have taken until 1.30 to start.
Same today, a few spits at 12.30 and umpires couldn't get off fast enough. The county game just gets no help with this attitude.
Plus it was £20 a day to get in, how does that help poor county attendances? There were barely 400 in yesterday and probably no more than double today. This is a test ground in England 2nd biggest city on a bank holiday weekend out of football season. Why not £5/10 and try and get some numbers in.
At least 25% of crowd must have been Somerset too!!!
Because we think his pace may get us something plus Dibble and Kirby are injured Rodders. Oh and England are/were interested in him and Josh Davey, the only other real option at the moment is an untried one.
Presently when they pick him they hardly bowl him after the first few if its not going well.
If they get on in this one but with lots of time lost it may be an ideal opportunity to try to bowl him into some form though with there being little or no proepect of either winning or losing.
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2014:05:27:09:33:37 by AGod.
Presently Jamie reminds me of young Stiff or Rooster but with potential for more. David and Andre didn't sustain the progress Jamie most definitely can.
Pace is a useful weapon but it isn't the only one of a great bowler.
Interesting about the umpires dilly/dallying on both days at Edgbaston about pitch inspections and mini falls of rain, wsm.
Every first-class umpire, and all the reserves, received a letter from the ECB at the start of the season, saying they must endeavour to get play under way at the earliest possible opportunity, and only come off if the ball was getting too wet to handle or the wicket was in danger of cutting up.
But how many are complying? We saw at Taunton on Friday that George Sharp and Ian Gould inspected at 6.20pm, but delayed the start until 7pm. There was hardly any wind or sun at the time, so the chances of conditions becoming any drier in a further 40 minutes, at that time in the evening and in those conditions, was infinitesimal.
The Beeb commentators said the umpires were coming off at the slightest sign of rain, rather than waiting for heavier rain to start.
However, if the rain forecast to fall was very heavy then you can see what their point might have been - that if they did not get things covered when the rain was still light then they could be caught out by atrocious conditions in which the ground could not be covered quickly enough as happened to us in our home game vs Durham where the hail and driving rain came down faster than we could possibly have got the covers on.
Yep it's always been a bone of contention for me. I remember a game at Durham 2 years ago where we had bowled them out cheaply on day one and the next 2 had been lost to rain although not heavy. Sun was out on final day and they started at 1135 or some daft time like that. I couldn't see why they couldn't start at 11 and what improvement 35 mins would make. That extra time in that game could have allowed us time to go for the win too that day.
Yes indeed. One hopes all goes well for the Empress and I expect the new arrival to be turning out for the SCCC under-nines (girls or boys) while I am still around.
Incidentally, I note that Somerset has had three scores in excess of 400 so far this season - and in none of them has a century been scored. I take this as a good sign that a number of players have been making useful contributions.
Seems to be a theme of narrowly missed centuries to this match.
Would be particularly gslling for Porterfield, should he continue that pattern, as he has yet to register 3 figures in the CC since he joined Warks.
The opposite of a feather in ours caps if we become the first CC1 bowling attack to ever concede a ton to Porterfield (I'm assuming that any and all tons he might have made for Gloucs would have been in Div Two).
Poor Jamie's having a bit of a nightmare - no longer helping him by letting him go in a match that will probably be rained off. Needs a rest in the 2s, I'd guess from afar, with Mesch or somebody else coming back.
To quote Mrs Dale (of blessed memory for those of a certain age) "I'm worried about Jim"- or in this case Jamie. No balls are back again, and as much as don't like saying it I think he needs some intensive basic coaching (Kirby and Nannes?) before we play him again. I still believe he has a great future-it needs sorting now.
It’s a bit odd that, earlier in the season, management wanted the extra batsman and were content with four main bowlers whereas now, at a time when we do not have five fit frontline bowlers that seem to be worth selecting, they’ve suddenly gone over to five bowlers.
Towards the end of the 2013 season, I was concerned that Jamie Overton was not progressing anywhere near as much as I, and many other people, hoped.
From what I have seen of his bowling performances this season, I feel that he is regressing more and more.
When this happens, I would imagine than it could be difficult to get the player back to the way that he was bowling before any decline, let alone taking him onto the next level(s).
I hope that the coaches at the club, plus relevant input from elsewhere if deemed necessary, will put his bowling back on track.
I don't profess to know what needs to be done to rectify this, but I am sure that someone does.
I'm sure they're on the case Clarence. It does seem ass though his England stint did him no favours, but I've every confidence it'll be sorted and he'll be back firing very soon.
If we can get on to take one more wicket tomorrow, I'll be reasonably content with this week's CC work. I'm amazed how much play we had today, to be honest.
[I'd be interested to know, as a purely academic exercise if anyone's able, how many times this season we've been less than ten runs or one wicket away from a bonus point at the 110-over mark. I know it's not the be-all and end-all of things, and it's better to win games, but it seems to me we've had more than our usual share of these instances...and how many points have we just missed out on?]
It's time for something even though we have done OK up to now. There is going to be a day when we need something to add the edge and I don't personally think it is Jamie at the moment in terms of his wicket taking ability or his ability to keep things tight while someone else does the wicket taking.
The second spin options have experience and Josh has at last taken name wickets. I doubt we'll go with James yet as an option.
We also have Callum Stewart on a summer contract, which I'd forgotten.
Of course, one irony is that the traditional Old Trafford deck that has pace and bounce cries out for bowlers of Jamie's type!! I doubt this track will be like those ones but if management think it might be then it could yet cloud the decision.
George Dobell does say "Jamie Overton may be raw - seven no-balls and an economy rate of seven an over tell their own story - but he hurried and troubled the batsmen like no-one else."
I can't say that was the impression that I got from the commentators on the radio. Nor did I see it happen vs Durham or Notts.
I thought Old Trafford was coming up this Sunday - have I got that wrong? If it is on Sunday then there's presumably little time for JO to play in the seconds other than maybe in a T20 or similar?
Hurrying and troubling them is fine, if either they are making mistakes at his end or losing their wickets at the other.
This did not seem to happen. The reason why he is hurrying and troubling them and not taking wickets is the problem we have to solve. It isn't a good thing until it provides results.
Find him the right partner or the right line and length because he seems to be of little use to us at the moment without one or the other.
Mike Munday could bowl unplayable balls but at 6 odd an over they were too few and far between for him to be a viable option.
We don't need a paceman who worries the opposition. We need a paceman who can provide 40 wickets a season however they arrive. That is the kind of 'worry' I personally need Jamie to put in the minds of the opposition.
They sorted Lewis Gregory out, when for a while he looked like he'd lost all semblance of bowling (and batting) ability. JO is a very young bowler who's had a few bad games, he'll come good.
Has he had 'very few bad games' SLC? Since his return from England? I doubt his record this early season is as good as David Stiff's was some 3 or 4 seasons ago (could be wrong)
Any mention of a problem with Jamie seems to be viewed as some kind of criticism of the player and it shouldn't be. He is young and he does have it there but while it is there then surely there's a need to work out how to solve this issue rather than simply play him and hope it goes away.
Injury makes that difficult at the moment but he isn't being effective presently as a foil for his partner bowler or as a shock weapon himself and we need him working in both roles preferably.
He's a young lad, for whatever reason he's having a rough spell, we all get them, no matter what.
He'll be back, this little blip could even do him a bit of good.
How is everyone this damp spring morning?
a) Do we have somebody who is a better option that will be available for Old Trafford?
and
b) (which might TRUMP A irrespective of the answer to A)..... Is being in the firing line helping or hindering JO at the present time?
It's impossible to tell from afar whether he is having technical issues with his action/run-up (although the no-balls may imply an issue with the latter). If he isn't having technical issues then keeping him in the XI becomes more understandable because it might then just be a case of once he gets a wicket or two confidence will be restored and then more wickets will swiftly follow. But if there's something major from a technical stand-point, then it might not be that simple.
It would be lovely to think MT could just toss the ball to JOve as soon as we get on, that something would then just "click", that he'd mop up the last five for "diddly squat"………
There are points both for batting and bowling that could be obtained very quickly and so I assume both sides will want to play as soon as conditions allow. We certainly need that second bowling point to guarantee second place in the table.
Edited to add that we would be 2nd= with Yorkshire; four quick wickets would take us one point ahead.
Edited a second time in the light of Mike's entirely justifiable question. Sorry for carelessness: must try harder.

LoL - regrettably I understand from the commentators that neither side wanted to go off on several occasions yesterday, but that appeared to influence the umpires not one jot.....
... and yet we hear that umpires have been instructed to keep play going for as long as possible. I suspect it is the lure of that tea and biscuits which I think you mentioned yesterday, AGod, that lures them to the snugness of the pavilion on inclement days.
No need to apologise, Mike. I have no excuse for such carelessness and hereby promise to make no further contributions to this site until my next posting.
