Hove for CC1 Round 4 today with Marcus sorting through a wealth of people looking to make a claim on a place or finding a berth after injury. Bowling and batting provide him with teasers so it will be interesting to see what he comes up with to get the points at this difficult ground. Please not another two dayer - we haven't done well in them!!

Marcus has to sort out the availability of some injured players while also considering the case being made by people on the periphery but performing well today in order to get his side to beat Sussex in their very difficult own back yard
The squad he has at his disposal is;
Marcus Trescothick (capt), James Hildreth (vice capt), Tom Abell, Nick Compton, George Dockrell, Lewis Gregory, Chris Jones, Craig Kieswetter, Johann Myburgh, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Alviro Petersen, Alfonso Thomas and Pete Trego.
There are a number of people who pick themselves presently and others whose ability to compete a full game is in dobt at the moment and may have to be tested before the selection meeting.. On that basis, George must for the first time this season think he is in with a significant chance of getting a game because Craig Overton and Alfonso Thomas must have questions over their inclusion on fitness grounds.
Tom Abell is included and although people seem to think that this is a 'taster' session for him; travelling with the firsts and doing 12th man duties, it may not be the case. I would have thought however if there was a chance of a second team player having a realistic chance in this one then Alex Barrow would have been included after his career best 168 for the seconds last week.
Will Jamie Overton be trusted to have got over his no ball glitches of last week against Durham? Is he the man who will sit this one if all others are fit? It is difficult to see how the batting line-up will not include Compton, Kieswetter and Myburgh. Allrounders Trego and Gregory will play as Craig Meschede is unavailable. The rest? Well we'll see soon.
Well actually maybe we won't because the weather is keping the side off the pitch. The side includes Jamie Overton and Alfonso Thomas. No Cove.
Therefore the line-up is;
Trescothick, Jones, Compton, Petersen, Hildreth, Myburgh, Kieswetter, Trego, Gregory, Overton J and Thomas
When the game finally started at about 4 in the afternoon we were batting after being put in by Sussex. Unfortunately we lost Jones to the first ball he faced. With Jordan and Lewis bowling, at 5:30 on Day 1 both Nick and Marcus had 12 each and we were 24 for 1. But that wasn't the end of the wickets to tumble that day as Nick was dismissed for 41 (2 for 78) before the end of play and the nightwatchman Jamie Overton lasted only a mere four balls. Somerset then sent in another 'semi-nightwatchman in Alfonso and finished with 3 down for 83.
Day 2 started on time with better prospects for prolonged play. The skipper was still there but Alf only managed another 4 balls before he went at 89 and Alviro took his spot in the middle. The Sussex crowd were then treated to two internationally experienced batsmen crafting a partnership. Both taking their time, both faultless in their execution. This was the section of the game where Marcus Trescothick slayed a few demons and returned to pre 2013 form. We had very few glimpses of this last year and we must hope for moany more in the games to come. After a partnership of 139 and to the surprise of many, Alviro departed for an excellent 76 stumped. A ton must have been on the cards, he hadn't put a foot wrong until then. However what he had done was set the base for the first Trescothick hundred for some considerable time. It came off 214 balls in 300 minutes with 12 fours. It won't go down as Banger's fastest but it was extremely welcome and the outpouring of relief and well wishes from Somerset channels of communication show how vital this man is to the welfare of this team.
The boss was next to go for 116 at 253. The Vice skip did not hang around long but with Trego (best first class in the 130s) and Myburgh (double first class ton to his name) coming in at 9 and 10, we batted a way down the list. Craig K went for 5 straight after his VC but the last three did their jobs, taking the score from 267 to 372 with 37 from Johann and an excellent 47 from last man Lewis to consolidate Somerset's position. Is this going to be the Gregory Year? He has certainly started it strongly.
With 11 overs to face and a challenging total before them for Day 3, Sussex will not be happy to go into the second half of the game already one wicket down (Ed Joyce caught behind off Thomas for 6) and only 25 runs on the board.
A big third day for the visitors. One commentator said that 250 was a challenging total on this pitch. That makes Somerset's batting performance all the more impressive but also suggests that they should be able to get among the Sussex batsmen today and put them in a position of having to save this game with a deficit facing them when they go into their second innings. We shall see how it pans out on what should be a full day.
It was a full day and it as an almost complete disaster for the Sussex batsmen as Somerset bowlers get their collective act together and cut a swathe through the home side's first innings. Only Luke Wells really put up any kind of long term resistance with 79 while only three other men got over 10 and even then only by 1! They were gone in 55 overs for 142 with Lewis taking 5 for 49, Alf and Jamie getting 2 each and Pete picking up 1. Craig Kieswetter did not take to the field because of food poisoning and so with the agreement of the Sussex skipper, Alex Barrow was called down from Taunton. Long journey that. So who took the gloves and stood in? Mr Sausage himself our glorious skipper. It's been a while since he kept in a game (did a few one dayers pre 2005) but he did the job very tidily indeed and took two excellent catches. Bet he was glad to finish the day though.
However the day was not yet over as Somerset enfoorced the follow on and made Wells spend more time in the middle fater he carried his bat through the first knock and came out to start the second having spent every moment of the game on the field up to that point.
It didn't get better for Sussex thought their start was more Wells went at 42 for a well deserved rest annd thhey didn't lose another until close to 90 and Ed Joyce holding the innings together this time. As with us last year at Horsham however, the wickets kept dropping and the fragile middle order just couldnot maintain any real stability as Lewis once more racked up the wickets and Jamie put some real venom on the ball. This was after Alf had got the ball rolling with 2 and Pete had also weighed in. Day 3 ended with Sussex looking down the barrell with 6 men back in the hutch and only162 runs to their name. If they were going to in this game it was goiing to be a long fourth day.
Day 4 opened to sea mist and a slight delay but when it finally got moving it was pretty much more of the same for the home supporters. They were still 68 froom making us take the field with the bat again and only Joyce looked like any kind of problem. His partner Jordan had 6 and soon went for 7 to Overton. Anyon fought for a while and moved the score to 190 when Lewis delivered the hammmer blow and sent Joyce back to the dressing room. Trigger removed Anyon 2 runs later and it was only a matter of seeing whether Magoffin and Lewis could get the 20 to save the innings defeat. They had a go with Magoffin getting 20 himself but Gregory wasn't going to be denied and Lewis applied the coup de grace to Lewis by cleann bowling him and w won by an innings and 11 runs in about two and a half days of play.
Horsham is expunged. Th Boss has a ton and Lewis Gregory has finally matured into the layer we all wanted him to become. An excellent allround performance and Somerset are unbeaten in April for the first time in a considerable while.

Bit of a long shot but I had been planning to make a 2 day trip to Sussex next Sunday/Monday for days 1 & 2 of our 4 day away game at Hove.
I have been stood up by my 2 travel companions, and not too keen on the 3h15m trip incurring the whole cost alone.
Our plan was to leave early Sunday, 6.45/7am, take in Sundays play, stay over Sunday evening, watch the Mondays play and travel back straight after play.

As I feared, the Sunday start for CC matches is not to be an unmitigated delight for those of who depend on public transport.
I had informed a few fellow contributors that I would be at Hove on the first day, but on researching the Sunday trains I find a journey that would normally take me not much more than an hour will now take up to three hours - and then one has to face a similarly protracted journey home. Presumably that is because of essential maintenance work, about which one can hardly feel aggrieved, but it reinforces my feeling that the ECB believes that everybody goes everywhere by car.
I can't get to Hove on Monday and as it is OUR turn to win a four-day match in Sussex in two days I may miss the whole match. A two-day win by Somerset will compensate for any personal disappointment at not being there, but I know Tractor will be shattered by not being able to buy the seventeen pints of Old Lewes Groin Nadger he owes me.

I wonder if Abell is cover for NC in case his neck plays up again? Hopefully if that's the case then it's purely pre-cautionary as opposed to there being any real doubt over NC.

If all are fit, it will be difficult to predict who will lose out.

I'd assume Alf will play if fit and if they have no doubts over his capacity to last the distance.
If there are fitness/durability doubts over more than one seamer e.g. Alf and Craig O then one wonders if GD might play instead of either as club may seriously consider erring on the side of caution after 3 different seamers were unable to bowl for parts of the first two games.

To be honest assuming that all bowlers can be relied upon to get through the game then I think I'd pick the side from the last game but with Alf replacing Jamie Overton.
But, as I say I'm not really sure that either Alf or Craig O have had enough bowling to be fully confident that either would get through the game.

I would've thought if there was any rel doubt about Compton they'd take Barrow as back up. Think Abell is along for the ride and to do 12th man duties to get to spend some time with the first team.

Bagpusss - obviously they could just shuffle everyone up a place if needs be; but I think pretty much all of Barrow's recent first XI games have come in (roughly) the number 6 ish role - and he's done quite well there.
It's possible that he's now seen almost exclusively in that sort of role by management.
Obviously, Abell has never played in the first XI but maybe there's something about his game which makes them think he's either a top three sort of guy or nothing at this stage in his career.
Anyway, let's hope that there are zero residual issues with NC and his neck.

I think Bagpuss is correct....Abell taken to gain experience. If there was a doubt about Compo's fitness, I don't think young Abell would be thrown in yet, particularly with the attack that Sussex possess. I don't think you can score the number of runs Barrow has recently scored and then be overlooked should a vacancy arise!That would be odd indeed!!

Forecast seems to imply that today may be the worst of the four. Could either be very on and off in between brief heavy showers or 2 or 3 more prolonged and heavy downpours equalling a wash-out if the forecast is to be believed.
I'd imagine it's a fielding day if they do get on and if Tres continues his run as most successful tossing captain in the history of the CC (with a minimum qualifying number of games!)

My mistake, cricinfo had the Middx vs YOrks games listed the other way around.

Very sensibly they've not bothered to select Luke Wright.
Batting first probably won't be easy but I do wonder if our bowlers might start off better without the pressure of Trescothick having put the oppo in.
Tresco and Petersen need some runs. Hildreth has his poor second innings shot at CLS to atone for, IMO.

I would guess the pressure on the bowlers when the opposition have been put into bat is less than the pressure on the bowlers when the batsmen have been rolled over inside 23 overs.
Yes, Bagpuss, but I'm rather hoping that we don't get rolled over inside 23 overs...

Very nearly a great session for us.
Still, I think, a decent one.
The most pleasing aspect was that it sounded like we made Sussex bowl us out vs gifting away any wickets with daft shots.
I'm sure they'll come at us hard again in the morning.

I didn't dare post whilst it was ongoing, but that just could have been the biggest 32 overs in the recent career of our esteemed Captain. It'll need another big effort in the morning, but to still be there tonight is MASSIVE.

Judging by the commentary, MT and NC batted extremely well.
I do find it difficult to see the merit in sending in one (let alone two) nightwatchmen. As AG said, if they were going to do so, why not send in Gregory or even Trego. As it is, those two will be batting at 11 and 10 respectively.

Maybe having been dropped twice already today justifies it in some way shape or form...

And, yet, with a result looking likely at Wantage Road, we may nevertheless find ourselves in a not very good position in the table, especially if any further time is lost to the weather in this match (as is currently forecast). Still, it would be three difficult matches in the books and without defeat if that's the case.
But I think there are a number of very promising signs for Somerset, with the batting apparently turning around well after what happened last season. The next thing is to get "miles on the clock," for our bowlers to get them into rhythm and get as many of them as possible fit.
And, yet, with a result looking likely at Wantage Road, we may nevertheless find ourselves in a not very good position in the table, especially if any further time is lost to the weather in this match (as is currently forecast). Still, it would be three difficult matches in the books and without defeat if that's the case.

Very good morning, I wouldn't say a run rate of 2.71 this time of year is defensive.

On the one hand, he would sometimes write articles saying that the batsmen need to "bat long" and that that's why he signed Nick Compton to be a key man doing that job.
On the other, he often said that he wouldn't want to see SCCC "winning a CC by playing attritional cricket."
At heart, I think Brian was something of a romantic who genuinely thought that we'd be able to win the CC with a "flair," batting line-up.
I'm not sure I can remember the last time that a team won a CC with a flamboyant/flair type approach to their batting, though!

Of course I'm delighted for MT, though Hopps was a bit generous in crediting him with 57 centuries, whereas he still remains (only) 48 short of a hundred.
Incidentally today's Somerset commentator seemed to think you could add his FC centuries to his Test ones, perhaps not understanding that Test cricket is also FC.

Hopefully look at getting 4 batting points here, I guess the slightly encouraging news is the new ball seems to still do something.. hopefully will be nice and overcast in the morning..
I suspect that Mr. Hopps may have been let down by a transcriber (either human or robotic) mis-hearing "second" as "seventh".
As relieved as I am surprised about this knock from the Captain. I really did think that he’s lost his mojo for the long-term after that nasty ankle injury.
But this sounds like it was really good innings against a strong bowling attack in difficult conditions – in other words the sort of thing that I don’t think he ever really looked like doing last season.

It might be a new ball pitch, or it might be that Alviro, Marcus and Nick played very well, as befits batsmen of international class. Hope we can get up past 300 after tea and then rip into them.
So, overall, I think that with today’s runs for MT and AP then EVERY member of the team that has had at least three completed innings this season, has made at least one 50.
Forecast for this one appears to be improving, too, so hopefully we can push on and put Sussex under real pressure.

Great effort from Lewis and Myburgh. Shame we just missed the extra point. Bat on guys. We can put real pressure on the Sussex batters soon enough!
And in a way this is the flip-side of all the talk of the negativity of the use of (two) nightwatchmen. Sussex will surely have hoped nine down meant virtually all out, but we still had a proper batsman at 11.
The point lost might be a disappointment but the closer we edge towards 400 the strong the position we hold in the game I guess.

Yes, FE, I must admit I'm not as opposed to the use of night-watchmen as most here are, partly for that reason.
I just thought that Jamie O was a surprising choice as, when I've seen him bat, he's more of your stroke-playing tail-ender whereas your conventional night-watchman is there to block on the night that he goes in. In the event, it sounded like he got a great ball to get him out, so no fault of his.

Just watched yesterday's highlights, I think Compo spent most of the time batting half a stump outside off!

A more steady knock than many I've seen him do but perfect for the situation.
Alviro looked superb too, a real shock when he got out.
Really nice venue and very pleasant staff and stewards, right up there with my favourite away grounds, only 4 more on the circuit to knock off my list now.

Is Lewis Gregory becoming what we used to call a "good player" in our knowing, under-estimated way, with the emphasis on "good"? Averaging 42 with the bat and 12 wickets @ 28 in the CC this season so far says I think he is.
I'd be interested to know his stats for, say, the last 4 or 5 matches of last season, plus 3 to date this season.

Very strong bowling stats from the Lord's game towards the end of last season.
It's great to have all-rounders in a team and, when everyone is fit, Somerset can call on Gregory, Meschede and Trego and hopefully Craig Overton will get fully fit, bowling wise and also further develop his batting.
Then there's Myburgh who might also be able to come into that category and certainly looks a useful signing, thus far.

I agree about Lewis Gregory, AG. Perhaps the decision to give him the new ball at Lord's gave him the self-belief to fulfil his potential. He has been a revelation, with both bat and ball, since then.

We at the county ground always thought Lewis Gregory had something special (and Craig Meschede) the problem was keeping fit, since being in the Somerset squad we have hope for a full season from him.

It was talked about a lot on the commentary today - Horsham 2013 - especially how much it hurt the Somerset side. It is really gratifying to see how much this side don't ever want to go there again but also how they want to pay some of the pain back.
Next time we read someone complaining that people seem not to care on the pitch maybe we might just mention this game to them. Horsham was the one the critics kept referring back to most of last year. Let's hope Hove becomes the one the supporters keep reminding them of this season.

I think the turnaround started with DN and the second XI about half-way through last season - that fed into the first XI in the final quarter of last season and it looks like it has carried over into the first quarter of this season.
I would put as a best guess that the new more circumspect batting is a combination of DH, on instruction from DN.
The turnaround in Gregory's form from the last few games of last year is incredible, as he really did seem to have lost his spark after that injury.
Also, early season, I like the idea of packing the batting and having Myburgh at 7. The last wicket partnership looks like it could have been absolutely crucial in meaning we can enforce the follow on, and hopefully bat once.

This has been a very good side waiting to happen for some time....it simply needed that...time.

If I may help you from labouring under a misconception Steve....
Grockles.com does not have an apostrophe before the s. it isn't an individual's site but a site for people who become 'Grocklees'. I simply set it up in 1994/95 and I moderate it occasionally when necessary
I have no problem with 'potential negatives' or 'potential positives' as long as they conform with the site requirements. I also have no preference for either myself as you can either take my word for or check yourself. I will criticise if I feel something needs it and praise when deserved.

This is a site for people from any view to talk about Somerset's cricket, as long as people are willing to discuss and debate rather than preach I think they have a decent time here. It seems to have worked for a while and hopefully will continue to do so.
Hope that clarifies. As to this game, I think we have more than one outstanding performance - Lewis Gregory needs to be included in any plaudits for this game.

Good to hear that Chris Nash, after his nasty illness, is playing for Sussex Seconds at Horsham. He has a good record against Somerset and we were lucky that he was not quite ready for the Hove match.

I begrudge Lewis nothing after a truly match-winning performance, but MT must also be credited with skipping around like a lamb behind the stumps yesterday (and taking two catches) as well as managing his bowling changes most astutely during the two Sussex innings.
Averageside is entitled to his / her views, the same as everybody else, as I am sure you fully appreciate, chunkyinargyll.
And why wouldn't we look like a very good side...we have enormous young talent in abundance....they are exciting to watch, will grow and develop...just look who we have at age 22 or younger, Gregory, Jones, Dockrell, Barrow, Overton J Overton C, Meschede, Leach, Dibble, all with 1st class experience, add Abell and Burke and you see how bright the future is likely to be. Give them time, don't expect exceptional performances at every turn. Let them grow and move their game forward and we will be watching a virtual home grown team in the not too distant future. How exciting would that be??

I am trying not get carried away with this superb win, something feels different about this win early in the season it is as like it is the start of something big.

Unless Craig Kieswetter hasn`t recovered from his stomach bug, we will obviously play the same teaam against Nottinghamshire at Taunton on Sunday, in what should still be early season conditions.
But what is particulalry encouraging about today`s win is that it was achieved with a bunch of good players still in reserve.
Craig O must have come very close to selection at Hove, Meschede should be available within a match or two, Kirby will enter the equation in mid-season, our Middlesex friends seem to think Josh Davey is a very useful signing, and we haven`t even mentioned our two left-arm spinners, George D and Jack L.
Equally encouraging, easily the two best catches at Hove this week were taken by two subs currently in the Somerset Second XI - Tom Abell before lunch yesterday, and Alex Barrow (behind the wicket) to dismiss the irritable Zaidi (he of the anti-umpire twitter) before the close.
Having said all this, I am increasing coming to the view that Dirk Nannes is a wise T20 signing, especally as the matches will stretch through most of the season.
All the experts say we must nuture Jove and Cove, and while I might play the latter in some of the longer-format one-day matches, I would rest Jove from all of them and let him blast his way through the county championship - as he did effectively at Hove.
So my T20 seam attack would be selected from Thomas, Nannes, Gregory, Meschede, Trego, Davey and Kirby (when fit); and for the Royal London One-Day Cup extract Nannes (in the nicest possible way) and add Cove.

I can't argue much about your first paragraph, edinburghbil, and I agree with you when you say "not bad".
How to win at home?
Preparing 'result pitches' would be a good start.
I'll happily take 15 more "not bad" performances from our rag-tag assortment of the hapless, the hopeless, the helpless, the "finished" and the "pop-gun".

So pleased with this result, it's such a pleasure to see the youngsters find their feet. What an all round performance from Lewis and reportedly a couple of very hostile spells from Jamie. Most happy for Marcus though, as captain and batsman. Not a lot has gone right for him in the last year or so, but he played the perfect game. Next match can't start quickly enough!

Fantastic result. Best for me is the fact that all of the bits worked well - batted well down the order, bowled well in depth, and only one catch spilled I think. This is something solid and broadly based to build on. With plenty of firepower in reserve this could be a great season.
Poor Jones lasted only one ball, but it seems he fielded superbly throughout the match. So he too deserves a pat on the back.

And that one ball was described by the commentator later in the game as having been "a brute".
From what I heard (and there was a passage at the time ofvthe second new ball that I did not hear), pretty much all of our guys were bowled out with good deliveries and there were very few giveaways.
Its turning into a fine start to the season.
Unbeaten against the top three of last year and looking solid in all areas.
This result will make every team take notice and we are certainly contenders in a wide open championship.

I particularly enjoyed Marcus's century for which he battled so hard. There were other highlights with the bat, Nick C's calm and skill when conditions were at their most difficult on the first evening, Alviro's technique, which any aspiring batsman would do well to study, together with the very spirited last wicket stand, which I am sure had a huge psychological effect on Sussex.
However the two most impressive things were our fielding, which was aggressive and threatening to the opposition in the best possible way and above all Lewis G's bowling. He has now got 17 wickets in the last two matches and looks a class Division 1 opening bowler, as well as being an excellent foil to Jove. He is skiddy, keeps the ball up to the bat, using the short ball judiciously but effectively, is quicker than he looks, bowls wicket to wicket and moves it both ways. In short an outstanding prospect, but PLEASE do not let the England coaches get hold of him.

...and please, let us have pitches at Taunton that will do something for the bowlers, so our young (and not so young) attack doesn't have to bowl 130+ overs to get the opposition out in the first innings.

Sussex action in `suspending` the ban is typical of the approach by cynical clubs in several forms of professional sport, including rugby.
The aim is to distract the authorities, in this case the ECB, from an additional harsher penalty by giving the impression `oh, we`ve dealt with it internally`.

Sussex have sanctioned the player for his ill-advised tweet. If there is any action by the ECB surely it will be first and formost for the 'dissent' shown to the umpires at his dismissal. Although I would have expected to have heard of some action from ECB Towers by now.
Unless the radio commentators were wildly exaggerating, then It would be very surprising if the ECB did not take action over the dissent that, according to the commentators, was very clearly shown to the umpires.
I watched the recording of it and after what happened to Nick Compton for a similar offence I would be surprised if he did gets away with it.

I believe the umpires need to officially report the incidence of dissent to the ECB for any action to be taken. Presumably, no such report was made.
