James Burke gets his chance in tonight's T20 Blast against Essex. Injuries keep Alfonso Thomas out but we welcome back Lewis Gregory after his lay off. Cloudy and damp tonight with a later start because of rain at 6pm.

Commentary

Tunein App Live Event Number 11

After the away defeat in the CC1 to Notts it is back to the short format tonight against Essex. Alfonso Thomas is still struggling with a back problem and after being put through his paces during 12th man duty at Trent Bridge, James Burke gets the call up tonight (for the first T20 time I think)

The side is;

Trescothick, Kieswetter, Trego, Hildreth, Petersen, Meschede, Overton C, Gregory, Waller, Burke, Nannes

Essex won the toss and s]chose to field on a  ight of damp conditions and heavy grey cloud cover. The match started later than expected at 6 because of a short downpour but no overs were lost. Trescothick and Kieswetter opened against Napier and Masters. With 8 off the first and 17 by the end of the second, things were looking good until the skipper trked a fourth lusty blow afger ghree boundaries and holed out at the Gimblett off Napier. 20 for 1 brought a man who should have got his eye in; Peter Trego to the crease and he smashed a huge 6 into the Ondaatje car park to move us to 33 in 5 but it was the keeper who was making most of the running as we moved past 50 halfway through the 8th.  By 10 the balance between the two batsmen was coming back into equilibrium with 77 on the board, 22 to Trego and 30 to Kieswetter.

The 100 comes up as a massive 6 from CK with the first ball of the 12th but he is caught off Ravi Bopara by TenDoeschate next ball and we have a mini collapse as only 1 run is added in the next over before Pete Trego is run out by Ravi and we find ourselves with new men Alviro Petersen and James Hildreth at the crease and little time to settle.

111 for 3 at 15 overs becomes 133 for 6 3 overs later as scoreboard pressure and some poor shot selection removes Hildreth LBW to Philips at 111, Burke at 124 LBW to Masters, Meschede at 134 caught Phillips off Topley. It doesn't end either because Craig Overton goes 1 ball into the 19th to the same man off Napier. Meanwhile Petersen has been working and has 24 off 15. Topley bowls the last at 144 for 7. The first is a dot and the second goes for 1. Max takes on the fielder and runs 2 for the third. Number 4 produces nothing while 5 only adds 1. At 149 for 7 the last is again a single.  A straight 150, disappointing 39 from the last 5.  Essex need 151.

Ryder and Pettini stride out in gloomy conditions to start the Essex reply Trego starts the first from the OP and then Nannes has first crack from the River.  Essex accumulate 9 runs from these. Craig Overton takes the third and doesn't fare as well as they plunder 16 off his, starting with a top edged six to the scoreboard seats.

Lewis Gregory returns with the ball for over 4 and the score moves to 32 without loss. Dirk changes ends for the 5th and comes in from the OP. Unfortunately it doesn't stem the flow of runs particularly though one if the two boundaries does fly through Banger's hands. 43 after 5 overs is ahead of the rate.

Lewis breaks through in the 6th getting Ryder to snick behind to CK and we have our first at 49.  Wesley replaces him and nearly becomes LG's second wafting at one he couldn't hit. The 50 comes up in the 7th.

At 57 for 1, Somerset introduce Max and he immedaitely has Wesley fooled and plumb in front with his second ball. 58 for 2 introduces Ravi Bopara to the fight. It's 66 for 2 after 8. Craig Meschede takes the 9th from the OP and then Max continues to halfway. On his third ball he shows his value to this format, Bopara drkves and sets out for 2, Waller realises the fielder coming in from the boundary is voing to allow it and sprints after the ball, picking it up and turning to dare Bopara to consider the second. 76 for 2 at 10, we were 77 for 1.

Cove spoils an excellent 11th over with a 6th ball long hop to add a boundary and take the visitors to 85. It looks like they will bowl Max through as usual as he wheels in for his third and does a good job keeping them at 88. It is Lewis' turn to change ends now as he comes in from the OP for the 13th. Bopara and Pettini are looking dangerous though as the Essex opener closes in on a 50 but they stay below 100 until halfway through the 14th and last from Max. 101 for 2 at the end of that one and another good T20 spell from Mr Waller.  4 overs 1 fof 22.

Pettini goes to 50 at the start of the 15th at 104 from Nannes. Then the skipper persuades the umpires to take the player's off for bad light with Essex ahead by 2 halfway through an over. It is dark but it was dark when they started.

The interruption is small and we are back on in less than 10 minutes.  Essex need 19 to win from 2 and a half (125 in 17 overs).  Nannes starts with a legside delivery that Bopara dispatches to fine leg. 14 off 14.

13 off 12. Cove long hops his first ball and they need 9 off 11. 2 off the next means 7 off 10. A single off the next. 6 off 9. 5 off 8. 4 off 7. and that's it. 4 off the last ball means Essex win by 8 wickets. Yawn.

Difficult to over-state how inimical to our CC chances any major injury to Alf's back would be.

Praying the scan is okay.

Would make even less sense to risk another T20 injury to Lewis Gregory in this game tonight if there is a possible injury cloud hanging over the Fonz, IMO. And I still think Craig O could probably do with a day off.

I shall shed few tears if this is washed out so that Craig O gets his extra day off from bowling and Lewis G does not end up being risked.

I can see the point of not risking Gregory, but surely most of the rest of our squad, including Cove, should be able to bowl 24 balls without exhausting themselves.

With the inimicalness of it all and based on the fact that Alf hasn't bowled for a week now, surely it would be better to try him out with four overs and 3 hours of cricket (half of which he'll be off the field with luck) rather than take him into the CC1 game cold and have him struggle at the end of day 1?

Absolutely belting down in TA4 at the moment and has been most of the morning

er, I've no reason to doubt what Ronnie said on the matter, Grockle, namely that we have no intention of playing Alf tonight unless his scan result has a) been received and b)is negative for anything of significance.

In any event, one assumes that the mere fact of a scan having taken place might suggest that he's still suffering at least a bit of residual discomfort from it. In which case, I personally think it would make sense to rest him rather than have him play in potentially damp conditions. A lot of people that have issues with stiffness (such as those with arthiritis (no I don't know how to spell it) claim that damp conditions make their condition more uncomfortable. However, I acknowledge that there is no actual medical evidence to back these claims.

On the assumption that there is no specialist radiography equipment at the ground, do they have to attend a private clinic or hospital to undertake such procedures?

So to recap nos is relaxed about our position.mmm I remember him saying after middx he was really looking forward to hhis game to see the reaction of the players. The biggest punch comes from the back foot or some garbage he said. It's difficult to throw a punch from the canvas dave and that's where we are now in this. Be less relaxed and take it seriously we are a poor t20 team out of nowhere. People say well let's concentrate on the cc. That's fine till you put in performances like day one at notts. These defeats are eroding confidence and it needs to stop come Sunday or the season will dissipate quite quickly!!

AGod
27/06/2014 21:20
Anyone with a brain could see from very early on that we have no price for T20 this year and continuing to pursue it remains a waste of time.

Risking Gregory, IMO, was stupid.

Hopefully after another overwhelming defeat the penny will finally drop in terms of us not having the horses to compete in T20.

nelliec
27/06/2014 21:28
To be fair Somerset have batted in similar light chasing. That's the first time I've seen bad light affect a T20 game. Was anyone in danger?Would probably lost anyway, but 3 or 4 thousand people have gone home disappointed ,and probably 1000 of those might not return.

Biggest trouble however is the high tech advertising boards which made the light look ten times worse. As soon as they were turned off everything seemed ok again.

Also the fifteen minute umpires discussion over D / Lewis probably cost at least 2 overs

27/06/2014 21:55

Batted very poorly, we just have no fire power after the top 3. Or at least none that has yet materialises.

Bowled very poorly bar Max, just no penetration, especially once the field goes back, only wickets come from batter error.

Luckily other results have gone for us this week mainly but still think we need to win at least 4 from 6 now.

Some questions. Why, having hit 3 successive 2s with orthodox shots did James play the reverse sweep? Why, having conceded only 2 runs in the opening over, was Trego taken off? Why, with the light fading and the Essex required run rate up to 8 an over, did Nannes bowl a bouncer which induced the umpires to take the players off? As Peter Simple used to say, I only ask because I wish to know!

AGod
27/06/2014 22:01
Don't think TG ever plays T20, Ron?

WSM - yep, it's pretty simple. T20 is about gun batsmen. We used to have 5 of them - Tres when he was good at T20, Ck, Pete, the real KP and Jos. when you have 5 guns in your team then the chance of at least one of them firing in any guven game is pretty darn good.

Now we're down to just 2 gun batsmen. And the rest are woefully under-powered, I'm afraid.

At least he takes up a spot meaning that one fewer of our CC bowlers has to play T20.

On the other hand some of our younger players that are probably not going to make the CC XI at any point this season could probably benefit from first-team exposure via T20.

Burke got a go tonight (although not with the ball for some reason) and some others such as Davey and Stewart could also probably be given a go.

Ronniesabre
27/06/2014 22:33
In a couple sp but poor in others. I'd have another batting all rounder in there but finding him is issue. Would rather do without than nannes I'm afraid. That's my view anyway!!

AGod
27/06/2014 22:38
Not only is he a poorer bowler than Yasir Arafat but Yasir can also hit the ball a long way, whereas Nannes is a rabbit.

It was always going to be difficult to find a decent player given the stretched out format of the competition. I'm sure other Counties will have found the same - which is why I forecast a swift return to a T20 window in future years.

Mike TA1

Not having read any post these are my thoughts.

Why do we have to bowl so short, once again Max Waller has the best bowling figures (forgetting Peter Trego who only bowled one over).

Craig Kieswetter batting, Body language often tell the story, James Foster appealing for a caught behind he is not even looking at the umpire and Ravi Bopara raised his arm and never said a word.

With Fifty over cricket coming up later in the season we will have to bowl better than this otherwise we will have large scores to chase.

The REAL KP won us something with his 'gun'

After the match with the second KP and the equally inconsistent 'gun' of Jos did we win a title? How often did that partnership fire?

It's not the 'gun' it's the target you fire at and how good your aim is. Last night was not about 6's and 4's. It was about maintaining a scoring rate. You want to alter that?

Get the batting people to concentrate on picking the spots, keeping the ball on the ground, taking the fielders on and making ones into twos. If you do that, the balls that ought to be boundary bound will come because you take the initiative from the bowler.

Keith Parsons understood that. It's not about strike rates of individuals it's about scoring rates over the life of a competition. He'd have been a better bowler than Keiron in this format as well. Hitting 155 but only facing a small number of balls is not always the way to play T20. Once more Somerset forgot that last night, Essex didn't.

Ref the light. I've rarely seen even a one day game where we started a second innings in that poor visibility. I've seen us end them in it. The press box lights were kept off ONLY because no one wanted to give the umpires an excuse. Nannes' bouncer was daft but Essex were always ahead of what was required.

Seriously thought even without Jos that we'd be blazing away in T20, but hey ho, 4 day side of things is a decent improvement on last year so far though.

I said in pre-season I thought we'd be relatively stronger in longer-form games.

Biggest reason being that Jos was a bigger loss in the shorter form games, at least in the short term. Plus the knowledge that we'd be unlikely to be able to sign a decent second overseas player for T20 given the format of the competition.

Grockle - it was never about how often one particular partnership fired.. though as I say that particular partnership definitely got us through a T20 QF at Trent Bridge. I think they took about 60 off the final 5 overs to win that one. The point is about the number of big-hitters that you have in a team. The more of them you have the more likely at least one (and hopefully more) of them is likely to come off. Simple law of averages. Equally, if you want to talk about a partnership if you have Tresco circa 2009/10, Pete, CK, Pollard and Jos? Law of averages says there's more chance of getting at least one explosive partnership amongst some combination of those five during the course of an innings then there is when you've only got PT and CK really left that can hammer it.

I've never believed that T20 games at Taunton are won by running ones and twos. If you look at last night's scorecard, only one SCCC batsman, Petersen in this case, had the sort of strike-rate that is normally needed to win T20 games at Taunton (Petersen 152) But Essex had two players that produced that sort of strike-rate (Ryder 153 and Bopara 155).

How often does 150, batting first, win at Taunton in T20?

I'd guess it's no higher than about 40%, tops. Probably closer to 35%.

Here are the scores for side batting first and results from the last two years at Taunton

Gloucs 190-6 LOST

Northants 152- 7 LOST

Worcs 168-7 WON

Som 199-6 WON

Som 191-6 WON

Northants 137-5 LOST

Glamorgan 178-5 LOST

Som 140-8 LOST

Worcs 173-7 WON

So 0% in fact in the nine most recent home games that were played to a finish (one was abandoned so not listed).

As for "ones and twos"?

Well, Ryder obviously did not bother with those.

CK and Pete seem to have scored a reasonable number of runs in non-boundaries, as did AP.

The only guy in the match that seems to have scored a lot of runs without hitting lots of boundaries was Pettini.

Was Pettini really the main reason Essex won the game?

I'd be very surprised.

brt, I think you'll find that the T20 finals will still go ahead - I haven't heard any confirmation yet of them being cancelled because SCCC might not be there.

Simple. If you don't score runs you can't win matches. If you don't keep up momentum you don't win matches. If you don't accumulate you don't win matches. In 20 overs you have to maintain pressure. Ryder is one of your T20 big guns then is he? He scored the way he did because he was allowed to. All these guys, except the special ones do. If the bowlers don't give you the balls to 'power hit' what do you do to win? You average at least a run a ball as a minimum irrespective of whether you are playing at Taunton in brilliant sunshine or dark conditions with rain in the air.

Stats tell you something about what might happen in the next match but in the reality of the actual game you work with what gets the job done. The minimum is scoring from the balls you receive and stopping them doing the same. Ryder did not score the winning runs they were scored because Essex pressure got to Nannes whose first ball after the return was a legside long hop and Cove who provided the same at the start of the last over. After that no 'guns' were needed. Before that Essex did no better than we had with our lack of big hitters. We lost this game because our 'big hitters' tried to do nothing else for most of the game and usually holed out for 4 when 3 twos were on offer with better placed shots. You need boundaries to get the big scores but getting a competitive score is the first objective and if that means keeping your head then that's the strategy to follow. Gayle, Pollard and the rest have done wonders in games their sides have lost because there was no less expansive batting support or tight bowling after they holed out. Pollard won us ONE game on his own in his time with us - the rest required him to finish off the good work of others with the bat at the end or help defend a total that the TEAM had created together.

150 was a below average score but it was a below average scoring night in below average June conditions. Gambling on picking big hitters and then hoping one of them comes good is an idiotic strategy for a short format. It's the guys who score consistently based on the conditions they face who keep you in games. They give your big hitters the chance to have their moment. The times when these boys have the good days is when the opposition bowlers LET THEM.

For someone who refers to this game despairingly as "hit and giggle", you really haven't got the subtleties of it too well. There's far more to a T20 campaign than a big bloke with a big bat

Re: "competitive scores," vs big ones, Grockle:

I read some time over the winter a piece about teams that lose early wickets during T20 innings - I think the criterion was losing 3 or more in the powerplay.

The study looked at what the correct approach should be for a team that has that happen to it.

The conclusion was that:

a) The teams that try to consolidate/re-build in the hope of at least getting a competitive total usually succeed in stabilising from a point of view of not losing loads of wickets but they almost always lose the game - I think the figure cited was a high as 95% of the time.

b) The teams that keep trying to go big, and to hell with the fact that there are three wickets down get bundled out for an obviously poor score about half the time. About 25% of the time they end up with the same sort of score as the teams that tried to re-build, and about 25% of the time they go onto a winning total.

I believe the two approaches were separated, for the purposes of the study, by looking at the run-rate in the first six overs after the 3rd wicket fell - over a certain level denoted a team still attacking, below it indicated a team "rebuilding," in the hope of a competitive total.

My personal view - and, frankly, your comments about our bowling yesterday do absolutely nothing to dissuade me from it, is that Somerset are nowhere close to having the sort of bowling attack where setting out to make a "competitive," score is a winning strategy. Or to put it another way, with our current T20 bowling attack, we need loads of runs, batting first, to win unless we're on some deathly slow track, such as at Arundel.

Perhaps if we'd set out to get 165 or something, rather than striving for 180, we might have got 165 rather than 150? But, with our current bowling attack, I think we'll lose defending 165 at Taunton almost all the time anyway - so might as well aim high and if it doesn't work, so be it.

Sure, you don't want everyone else holing out at the other end when Pollard is batting. And, sure, that would have happened at times and we'd have ended up with bad totals. But there were also plenty of times when Somerset's big guns - any combo from the five of Tresco, Pete, CK, KP and Jos, combined to put explosive partnerships - ones where both partners were smashing balls to (or over) the boundary.

We don't really have the personnel to do that anymore. And yeah, we could push ones and twos around a lot instead but I don't think we have the bowling attack to defend totals substantially built on ones and twos (and we both know threes are a rarity at Taunton).

Tend to disagree with an earlier Grockle statement. T20 IS ABOUT 4's AND 6's , if you can achieve them. Our problem currently is that we have so few batters who can with any regularity. Perhaps we need to think outside the box, why are beefy boys like the Overtones (both of whom have proven to have big hits in them) sat in the pavilion? why didn't Mesch come in further up the order after that start?
Ive said before that I don't personally much care for 20/20 but i do like the Golden Eggs that it has layed and crowds like last night will be sending a shiver through the accounts room. A shiver from which we could all catch a big cold!
Finally, agree that the sooner this competition gets back into a tight midsummer window the better. Best way to deal with IPL, Big Bash etc is to match it in terms of spectacle.

AGod
28/06/2014 15:23
Yep, I never liked the window. But it's even worse outisde of it!

I strongly suspect that well over 90 percent of T20 matches are won by the team that hits the most boundaries in the game. I think that held true in each of the games played last night.

Grockle
28/06/2014 15:57
The problem with just picking bits of posts AG is you don't bother to read all of it. Pollard, Gayle, et al can win you games no one denies that. The team wins you tournaments and its more than one IPL manager who have found that out.

You need to read the bit about how the boundaries tend to come about. I strongly suspect that most T20's are won by the better bowling attack or the side that kept the pressure on the opposition for the whole game.

Pressure wins T20 matches. If your big man is firing and you've put all your eggs in that 'explosive pair' strategy then it should work sometimes. In my personal experience it hasn't often enough.

If it doesn't then what do you do? it's all about 6s and 4s is it? Well what is your backup plan because we are being beaten by sides without these big name hitters? They must have some other plan. Either that or we are giving them the opportunity to beat us by the loose nature of our bowling attack and the poor degree of our ball by ball pressure.

In 2005 we didn't win the T20 tournament because we hit the other side out of the games. We may have won the odd one, Matt Wood certainly had a decent game I can remember and I'm sure Marcus would have done something with Graeme somewhere along the lines. Who won us the finals day?

Most of it was down to two big hitter. A Mr Caddick and a Mr Johnson. We certainly beat Leicestershire because of belief and pressure.

As I say, other formats don't rely on one type of player, why should T20. You need flexibility, you need adaptability and you need a team who fit the bill. Cramming the side with people and telling them to hit the cover off the ball is NOT the way to win the game unless the other side give it to you. Consistent pressure, bowlers who can add variation and take the pace off the ball, fielders who deliver a tight press, batsmen who score at more than a run a ball wherever the runs come from, a flexible captain who will vary the game plan as the game goes on. Put that together and the other side will give you all the boundary balls you need and fail to score them themselves.

If Keiron Pollard is part of that side all well and good but he won't be the only man you need and if you hope he and his ilk will win you a title by simply turning up and hitting every ball to the boundary ....well it doesn't happen does it - or it didn't to us.

Just for the record Railboy my 4 and 6 reference was specific to LAST NIGHT and not T20 in general. If I was referring to the format as a whole I would say it is not ALL about 4's and 6's.

Nope, Grockle, I did read it all but that was the part that I chose to comment on, thanks.

If you want to talk about 2005 and hitting?

Scores at Taunton in 2005 group stages for SCCC were (and we batted first every time)

210-6 vs Worcs (who replied with 195-5)

212- 3 vs Glamorgan

189-5 vs Northants (match lost)

228-5 vs Gloucs

Since we won only one away game, we wouldn't have made it out of the group without the awfully quick scoring (and to get to those scores in just 20 overs it will be overwhelmingly about boundaries) at home that is detailed above.

And as for the final? Their absurd decision to bat after the rain vs Caddy and Johnno certainly helped.

But I still don't think we'd have won without Biff dealing with Flintoff in his typically forthright fashion because most of the others looked seriously in trouble against Fred in the dark under the lights....

Regardless you don't get to the final without first getting out of the group.

Really? I'm pretty sure the World Cup is over for another 4 years at any rate. I guess my T20 ticket could go on viagogo to replace some of what it cost me last year. Though saying all that, its not all over yet, scraping 4th place is still possible
