Middlesex 2009 Starting XI Prediction Game

Udal and Who's Army?

By Ged Ladd
February 1 2009

It's February so that means it's time for the starting XI prediction competition. This game is quick and easy to play, so people from far and wide are sure to chance their keyboards and have a go. A huge amount of pride plus a famously miniscule prize up for grabs yet again. Deadline now moved to 10:59 a.m. on Sunday 22 March.

Who will take the field on Wednesday 22 April 2009 at Lord's?  And what will the Middlesex batting line up be for the first innings of that match?

The person who gets closest wins one of our famous small prizes. “Closest” is firstly determined by “correct number of players in the team”.  If that “score” is equal, the correct choice of captain and wicketkeeper comes into play.  If the “score” is still equal, the tie breaker is based on position in the batting order, with one unwanted point allocated for each error in placement in the batting order.  Twelfth man counts for nothing in this game.

It’s easy peasy - all you need to do is come up your chosen XI and e-mail that predicted team to: mtwdadmin@googlemail.com

Please use the subject line “2009 Starting XI”.

Stumps for this competition will be drawn at 23:59:59 GMT on 28 February. Deadline now moved to 10:59 a.m. on Sunday 22 March.

Those seeking inspiration might wish to discuss this matter on the accompanying thread, or look at other threads that discussed this matter earlier in the closed season, but remember that things move on.

Also to help inspire people – here is Ged Ladd’s prediction, although that might change once the IPL auction has been completed etc. etc.

Strauss

Godleman

Shah

Morgan

Malan

Dexter

Scott (Wkt)

Udal (Capt)

Murtagh

Finn

Richardson

You can change your entry at any point up until the deadline, but only your last entry will qualify for the competition.  So put in your joke entry before you put in your serious one!

As usual, the best and worst entries will be praised/vilified on MTWD very early in the new season.  And of course the winning entry will win one of those famous miniscule MTWD prizes.

Last year Pistol Pete picked a pack of predicted players to pluck the prize.  Who will be the winner this year?  Good luck, everyone.

Firstly I think that you have to discount both Shah and Strauss although after Friday's IPL auction, it may be that Owais doesn't get picked up and would therefore be available to us. Strauus, after a long tour at the helm in the Caribbean and with the next series starting so early, will almost certainly be given time off by the England Management.

As for Hughes, who knows but I will take a punt on him being here.

So, my prediction :

Hughes
Godleman
Compton
Morgan
Malan
Dexter
Scott
Udal
Murtagh
Richardson
Finn

With two new signings in the offing , Straussie and Ace on England duties and the propencity of Middlesex players to breakdown in pre-season training I will be keeping my powder dry on this one till a lot nearer the end of April .

I think I'll hold fire also.

New signing unveiling is 11/03/09.

Any chance of an extention to 12/03/09

Have just listened to the interview on the BBC London website. Interesting now to see whether the leak reveals itself again and news comes out of these two signings.

Darn you CBG you saw through my cunning plan , shame I didn't. Ah well , cup of tea and check the leaves it is then .

Maybe someone will leak the new signings as they did the "Panthers" story . One peed of CEO Vinny was that day .I wonder if he found out who did it and whether they are still in the employ of the club ? Not big and not clever whoever it was .

In the face of overwhelming demand (Janet) I have decided to move the deadline for this game to 10:59 a.m. on Sunday 22 March. This revised deadline will not be changed, regardless of subsequent squad news. (To some extent, the whole point of the game is to predict in the face of uncertainty).

Those who have already made submissions - remember that you can make as many submissions as you like up to the deadline - only your last entry will enter the competition. In that regard, it is a bit like writing a will.

I'm surprised at the number of people who have posted their submissions on this thread and the relatively small number who have submitted by e-mail. But perhaps people are being cunning, posting spoilers on the message board with a view to submitting their real entry by e-mail nearer the deadline. If people are trying to game the competition in this way, all I can say is "well done, keep going".

My commitment to users, however, is that I will always publish my own revised subission(s) on this thread.

Have fun folks.

Thanks Ged.

If we are signing two new players then it will help 'accuracy' if we know who they are

Godleman
Compton
AN Other
Dexter
Morgan
Malan
Scott/ Nash depending on when the Lions tour is over
Udal
Murtagh
Silverwood
Richardson

although experience suggests that one of the last two will probably be unavailable through injury and replaced by Finn.

The Philip Hughes announcement is bound to encourage most people to change their predictions. I am going to hold off for a little while, having extended the deadline, as I believe we are hoping for one more signing.

Remember, though, that you can have as many goes as you like, but only your last entry before the deadline will count towards the game.

The revised deadline is Sunday 22 March - i.e. a month before the game in question.

Crumbs! This is proving harder to work through than I thought.

No point in putting out a side on this thread unless it's set to be the one that wins, so it's got to be a full on mentally engaged prediction that scoops the prize. Come on, brain.

But...........

I keep coming back to the "Early Season Blues" problem for our notoriously brittle batting order - not that the dears only have that problem in the early season, mind - the thought that seamers tend to take all the early season wickets, the fact that Ben, Shaggy and Tim sorted us out to a reasonable total more times than they should have had to do last year, and so find myself wondering ...as I did after Ed went last year and Shaun was annointed........ are we not saddling oursleves with having to pick a spinner who's our captain for every match, when we could have picked another seamer.

I'd like Finn, Richo, Silvers, Dial M all in, currently, and Evans if one of these favours a fetlock pre - season, with Ben and six batters. We're already expecting big things of Neil Dexter, all of a sudden, aren't we!

Ah, well...... time to come off the fence soon enough.

Most stimulating.

I'm going to lurk around The Star in Sinjun's Wood, and see if I can get a tip off Mick Hunt.

This is identical X1 I had in mind except I'd swap Dexter and Compo in batting order and have Berg as 12th Man.

I do hope we have more than 3 seamers in the line-up like most seem to think - given Silvers and Richo's track record with injuries we could end the game with only two - or worse still just Murts ! I know it's only Glamorgan but I'd still be much happier with a 5-1-5 composite, therefore I'd pick...

1. Hughes
2. Godleman
3. Dexter
4. Morgan
5. Malan
6. Scott (w/k)
7. Udal (capt)
8. Murtagh
9. Finn

Pen to paper time.

Hughes, Godleman, Dexter, Morgan, Malan,Scott(W/K), Berg, Udal , Murtagh , Silverwood , Finn.

And still not 100% sure about it either. 5-1-5 split seems the only way to go first game of the season though , too risky to go into the game with a short bowling attack .

OMT

I'm going to go slightly different from the convention...

1. Godleman
2. Hughes
3. Strauss
4. Morgan
5. Malan
6. Scott (w/k)
7. Udal (capt)
8. Murtagh
9. Silverwood
10. Richardson
11. Finn

Did someone put two spinners in their side?! And with Owais away, who's going to fill the No.3 spot. With two top class openers, I reckon Straussy will do it, as he did occasionally last year I believe?

Ged
25/03/2009 22:14
Fascinating, OMT, but several days past the deadline.

We'll track your entry but you are not up for the prize, I'm afraid!
