Davey stars on Debut

Josh Davey

Gladiator sends in his first report for us from Bristol on day one of CC match v Glos. Highlight of the day a fine knock by young Josh Davey but overall another disappointing day for the Middle. The first innings scores at Bristol this year suggest that every team that wins the toss should bowl first. It was with no hesitation that Gidman asked Middlesex to bat. That was fine by Middlesex, they wanted to bat anyway. The surface was hard, yes there was some grass on top, but it didn't look like one that would as much as previous scores would suggest.

Middlesex got their way through to 236 after being 97-5. Much of that credit has to go to the 19 year old Josh Davey on his Championship debut. Just recently Davey made his international debut, for Scotland, and in the two ODI's he averaged 14 with the bat and picked up a wicket. His partnerships with Simpson (37), Smith (22), Murtagh (25) and a 9th wicket partnership of 53 with Middlessex's other player on Championship debut, Roland-Jones.

Middlesex got off to a good start against a 'relentless' five man pace attack of Kirby, Franklin, Lewis, Ireland and Hussain. A 63 run opening wicket partnership kicked them off and blunted the attack for 16.2 overs. It was from there that Middlesex lots 5 wickets for 34.

It will be interesting to see if how tough this wicket was to bat on and tomorrow will be the answer to that question. At the end of day two we will all be asking was it that hard a wicket to bat on or did the Middlesex batters miss out.

The score at tea on day three is Middlesex (236 and 181-6) trail Gloucestershire (420) by three runs so the answer to that question is Middlesex batters miss out.

It is great that this report was done by a non-Middlesex supporter who didn't act like they were shocked at how rubbish Middlesex are. Usually when non-Middlesex supporters do reports they gloat.

Unfortunately, the only two aims Middlesex can now have for this match are a). setting Gloucestershire a target greater than the 52 we set Northamptonshire at Lord's in our most recent County Championship match and b). avoiding a 10 wicket defeat.

Good report by Gladiator, short but to the point. Perhaps, being as presumably, a dare I say, blinkered Gloucester fan he failed to mention the shocker of decision by Holder giving Dexter out caught behind. He was nowhere near it and Pedro was really struggling to get a decision on a number of close calls.

A number of people left before end 8:50PM, which may explain lack of detail about their innings.

I dunno.... He seems to quite like Josh doesn't he?

A fine report.... to the point (unlike my waffle!)

Maybe we could ask him to report again, I'm sure the ones amongst us who like the 'cricket' reports will find them interesting...

Thanks Gladiator!

The list of umpire appointments for all 1st and 2nd XI matches in 2010 can be found here.

I don't think Vanburn Holder is due to umpire any further Middlesex matches this season, so I suppose that is good news.

He was too the point with the fact that the Glous pace attack was "relentless" as they always seem to be when they come up against us .

Many thanks for doing the report Gladiator .
