I was umming and aaahing about attending today. A long journey and the previous all day spent at Rock The Moor 80's concert which was rather energy sapping I had every reason not to go . A text from Fozzie saying We are Top of League and would I like a lift swung it for me. We allowed plenty of time but due to many M3 50mph speed limits it took as Ageas to get to the Bowl.
Hants are batting no idea who won toss. Run out chance 3rd over needing direct hit from nearby and Adams out by long way but throw missed by long way. In first 1/2 hour they were a few strong LBW shouts turned down, but otherwise no major alarms. Score is at noon score 60-0 and overrate -2. It was getting very desperate until at 12:30 match changing Dext has Dawson caught behind for 31. Carberry in playing for lunch which he does. Score is 97 - 1 with my favourite Sunday player Extras loaned out to Hants scoring 25.
No early breakthrough after lunch and no real prospect of wicket. A toilet break from Fozzie failed. I tried a lap of ground and half way round I heard the crushing of Adams stumps off of Harry 160-2. Here we go again, as Franklin eventually trusts himself to bowl, we are now -4 on over rate.
In the words of Fozzie " it seems like only complacency will earn us a wicket" which seemed to be the case as Vince is caught in deep our 1st bonus point takes us to net score -2 . It's 211 3 at tea.
Not a lot happened after tea for a while. The Sunday Carvery roasting was finished at 5pm out for 67. It was not very interesting as runs dried up until Wheater out plum LBW. Over rate still -2 , if we take another wicket and over rate stays the same we may end up today with 0 for the day. It's suddenly exciting.
No more wickets till close over rate back at -4. At least we contained the run rate as Hants finished on 297 5. zzzzzzz!
Three negatives. -3 net score for us.
Three positives. Good.company for the day. Good company. Did I mention the company was good?

Indeed I see The Guardian report on the opening day said "Hampshire and Middlesex served up excellent cricket here".
Game at end of third day is still well poised so I think I will return tomorrow. Hope it's not uninspiring!

I think your overall description of the day is fair enough, though.

However there was the bonus of an early finish. Not to get home in good time but to switch to the nursery ground next to the main Rose Bowl arena. Got to see the last hour of an exhilarating win by the seconds....with Hants closing down on the 316 target we started a collapse and Harry Podmore took the winning wicket in the last over. Only about three of us watching but it was well worth it and in complete contrast to the earlier draw by the first teams.
