The Final Stage

Here are the results of the fourth and final stage of the Tour de Wath Main quiz. Three phenomenal contestants, Jonathan Winsky, Mr Trellis and Teletext Army stuck it out to the bitter end. So who won the fourth round and who won the overall Tour de Wath Main. Read on and find out!! Many thanks to Big Perce for keeping us warm over the winter with this quiz.

Part four of the Big Perce quiz.  All three remaining contestants, Teletext Army, Mr Trellis and Jonathan Winsky put in stellar performances for the fourth and final time.  All three players should be mighty proud of themselves.  
It was really tight once again with universally high scores.

Suffice it to say that the editor’s (i.e. the judge’s) decision on the scoring method and results is final; any debate people might want to have about some of the answers should be done on this topic, but without the expectation of the results being changed.

Master points towards the overall contest are awarded as follows:
• 1st place – 4 master points
• 2nd place – 2 master points
• 3rd place – 1 master point

So, without further ado, here are the scores on the doors, in reverse order:
• 3rd place – Jonathan Winsky – 25 (gaining 1 master point)
• 2nd place – Mr Trellis - 26 (gaining 2 master points)
• 1st place – Teletext Army – 28 (gaining 4 master points)

Many congratulations for the second time to Teletext Army.  Another miniscule prize will be winging its way to you presently.

But here is the final master point leader board
• Mr Trellis - 10 master points;
• Teletext Army - 9.5 master points;
• Jonathan Winsky - 5 master points;
• Jeff Coleman – 2 master points;
• Middlesex Infinitum - 1.5 master points.

It couldn't have been much closer, but Mr Trellis has just maintained his lead over the four rounds and thus wins the maxiscule prize.  Don't get too excited about MTWD maxiscule prizes either, Mr T!!  But many congratulations and what pride.

13. Oh no! Its the Laws. What we should all know, but usually don't ( see in particular section 15 below).

a.You are the umpire. What is your decision?

  i. The batsman hits the ball low to a fielder, who dives forward and appears to catch the ball. The batsman 'walks', but there has been no appeal, nor has the batsman been given out. The fielder throws the ball to the keeper, who removes the bails. There is an appeal for a run out. The batsman is out of his ground. What is your decision? NOT OUT. LAW 27.7

  ii. The ball is struck over and beyond the sightscreen which is within the marked boundary. Before the ball touches the ground it is caught cleanly by a fielder who is obscured by the sightscreen from your vision -  but visible to the square leg umpire -  and is within the marked boundary. There is an appeal for a catch. What is your decision?  NOT OUT. SIX RUNS SIGNALLED. LAW 19.1.b

  iii. The last man is batting with a good batsman. From the first ball of the over, the no. 11 gets a lucky edge down towards the boundary. The batsmen complete a single, giving the good batsman the strike.  As the ball stops before reaching the boundary, a fielder kicks it over the boundary line. Do you, as umpire, have a decision to make? If you do, what is it?  YES, A DECISION IS REQUIRED AND IT IS THAT FIVE RUNS ARE SIGNALED; ONE FOR THE COMLTED RUN AND FOUR  RUNS FOR THE BOUNDARY. THE BATSMEN REMAIN AT THE ENDS TO WHICH THEY RAN, IE GOOD BATSMAN IS NOW ON STRIKE. LAW 19.6.

   iv. You are home for a well deserved spot of leave in 1916 and agree to umpire a local club match. You are at the bowler's end and the batsman, wearing batting gloves that cover his wrist, is struck on the wrist by the ball, which is caught by the wicket keeper. There is an appeal for 'caught'. What is your decision? NOT OUT. A BATSMAN CAN BE CAUGHT OFF THE HAND HOLDING THE BAT, BUT NOT THE WRIST (IN 1916; LAW NOW IS THAT THE BATSMAN WOULD BE OUT CAUGHT). LAW 22 OF 1914 REVISED LAWS.

 v. At a Pro40 match between Middlesex and Lancashire televised by Sky Sports, the toss is about to take place at the prescribed time, but only the Middlesex captain is present, together with Sky commentator Nasser Hussain, who is 'hosting' the toss and who claims that he has been asked by Lancashire to hand over their teamsheet and to undertake the toss for them as the non playing representative of their captain at the toss. The Lancashire players are all inside watching racing on TV. The Middlesex captain tosses the coin, after registering a protest at what he regards as a breach of the Laws, and Hussain calls correctly and decides to insert Middlesex in attrocious batting conditions. Middlesex then query the propriety of what has happened. What is your decision? THERE HAS BEEN NO IMPROPRIETY OR BREACH OF THE LAWS. ANY PERSON MAY HAND OVER THE TEAMSHEET AND REPRSENT THE CAPTAIN AT THE TOSS. HOWEVER, ONCE THE TOSS HAS BEEN COMPLETED ONLY A NOMINATED PLAYER MAY ACT FOR THE CAPTAIN (LAW 1.3.b)

b. Gilbert Jessop, one of he biggest hitters of all time, hit very few sixes in his career. Why was that? IN THOSE DAYS A SIX WAS ONLY SCORED IF THE ALL WERE HIT OUT OF THE GROUND, NOT JUST OVER THE BOUNDARY.
