When the legend Barmy Kev asked if I would do report for a Middlesex match, I thought of the wonderful people who visit this website and I thought I would give it a go.
Power play: Overs 1-6
On what was to be my first report should have started off straightforward but this is Middlesex and there again nothing seems to be straightforward. All started well when I arrived at the ground with Winsky junior to find out Essex Eagles won the toss and put the Panthers in to bat.
On a perfect batting wicket (well done to the grounds man) with Gilchrist and Warner to open we were hoping to set the Eagles a big target to win. Warner making his home debut for the Panthers didn’t let the fans down. He got the Panthers off to a flying start hitting 2 fours and 2 six’s in a score of 25. This included a massive six into the stand bearing his name. Now for the not so straightforward part, opening the bowling for the Eagles Styris and Wright to give the match a strange feel to it. This match had so many ex Middlesex players around it was to be expected that Warner would be out c Wright b Styris with Silverwood applauding from the boundary.
Gilchrist didn’t stay long but hit 2 fours in a stay of 8 balls and before being c&b by Styris for 13! Our future captain Neil Dexter came in after 4.5 overs and stayed until the 17th over. Score after 6 overs: 61 -2
Overs 7-10 Middlesex kept up the rate of 10 an over. Dexter and Morgan the batsmen and Kaneria and Chambers the bowlers. Morgan lasted 12 balls but not before he hit 2 sixes and a four in a knock of 21 giving a top edge catch to ten Doeschate off Chambers with the score on 83. One of the sixes sent the crowd in the Compton Stand diving taking evasive action to avoid being hit by the ball. Next man in Malan scored a two off his very first ball faced. Score after 10 overs: 101-3
Overs 11-15 Malan scored at a run a ball before he was out for 19 for the second c&b of the match, this time by Wright with the score on 124 in the 14th over. In next to a round of applause Ace! With the score still on 124 Dexter his only six of the match towards the long on boundary. Score after 15 overs: 135-4
Overs 16-20 Fourteen runs were scored in the 16th over with the help of four wides off the bowling of Styris. The penultimate ball of the over Dexter was c Phillips off the bowling of Wright for a superb knock of 43 off 37 balls hitting 3 fours and a six into the Grand Stand. During this time the Iceman played a fantastic knock hitting 24 off twelve balls with three fours and a six. The last ball of the innings brought up the 200, meaning Middlesex had hit their highest Twenty20 score at Lord's with the help of 18 wides.
Essex innings
The Essex innings was all about one person Ryan ten Doeschate, who in my opinion gave one of the finest Twenty20 batting displays seen at Lord's. He came to the wicket after both openers Bopara and Maunders were both out with the score 17-2 after 3.3 overs. He was finally out after 18.4 overs with the score on 178. ten Doeschate scored 102 from 54 balls including five fours and seven sixes. He took 22 runs off Malan's only over. The only other scorer of any note for the Eagles was Walker, who was caught by the Iceman off Dexter for 30. The next highest scorer was Grant Flower, who was not out in the end on 14.
At the end of the 19th over, they required 15 runs to win. A big shock for the Panthers came when Danish Kaneria hit the first ball for six, which got all the Essex supporters excited for the first time in the match. With two balls left, Kaneria was run out for seven by Pedro Collins meaning Chris Wright had to hit the last ball for six to tie. He could only manage a single and Middlesex won by five runs.
Dial M took 2-30, Collins took 3-28, Dexter completed a good all round match by taking 1-31 off his four overs and the other wicket taker was the Iceman, whose wicket was that of Foster. All in all, nearly 400 runs scored in 40 overs and probably the greatest Twenty20 match seen at Lord's
Barmy Kev said that I should be controversial. There's a rumour going round that Pedro Collins is off to Worcestershire to improve his fielding.
