Victory on a Batty Day

He Went, Batty

By Major Winsky
August 1 2010

Leon "Major" Winsky provides a final testament to a wonderful game for Middlesex. The events of the final day are set out for us all to enjoy. Many thanks to "The Major"

We arrived at the ground just before start of play and sat just in front of the normal regulars in the Grand Stand.

With the overnight score being Surrey on 110-6, Tim Murtagh opened the bowling from the Nursery End and six runs were scored of the first over of the day. Stewart Walters was on 15 and Gareth Batty on 12. In the first ball of Murtagh's second over, Batty was sensationally caught one-handed by Josh Davey with the score on 116, and for the next hour the word/name "Batty" was the order of the day to coin a phrase. One of the regulars behind said "get the car started", but the new batsmen Chris Tremlett had other ideas as he got his motor started. However, off his first ball Tremlett was dropped by Ace.

In Pedro Collins' third over, Tremlett hit the first boundary of the day towards the Grand Stand. In Murtagh's next over, Tremlett went batty as he scored two sixes - including a huge one into the top tier of the Grand Stand - and one four, pushing the score onto 138-7 with Walters on 19 and Tremlett on 18. The next over was bowled by Collins and the runs kept on flowing with eight runs scored, and following Murtagh's next over Tremlett went batty again, hitting a boundary to bring up the 150 followed by another boundary and a further six into the Grand Stand boxes, making the score 160-7 with Walters on 27 and Tremlett on 32.

Toby Roland-Jones then came on, and Walters scored two boundaries to bring up the 50 partnership in 32 balls to make the score 172-7. At this stage, Shaggy came on from the Pavilion End for the 44th over of the innings to bowl to his former Hampshire team-mate Tremlett and in the third ball of the over Tremlett went batty again, hitting a huge six which Jonathan swears hit the Pavilion roof to bring the score to 183-7, Walters on 43 and Tremlett on 39. By this time, Pedro had changed ends bowling from the Nursery End and there was success for Middlesex as Walters was caught behind by John Simpson for 43, bringing Jade Dernbach to the crease. Shaggy bowled the next over and Tremlett again went batty hitting Shaggy for a six into the long-on boundary followed by a four to make the score 193-8 with Tremlett on 49.

A little while later, the 200 came up and Tremlett brought up his 50 off 34 balls and in just over an hour's play 93 runs had been scored. When the 200 was scored and 93 had been scored in an hour, I promptly started to clap and Barmy Kev shouted out "Why are you clapping Mr Winsky?", so I turned round and said "When's the last time you had seen over 90 runs being scored in an hour in a County Championship match?".

However, with the score on 212 Shaggy had Dernbach - having just hit a six - out to a low catch by Owais Shah. Then it was the time for the Viscount Linley to come in and he lasted just four balls before he edged Collins to Scott Newman at slip and Middlesex had beaten Surrey by an innings and 44 runs to wild cheers in the Grand Stand. Middlesex secured the maximum possible 24 points from the match, but Surrey went home with just one after being deducted two points for a slow over-rate.

In just an hour and 10 minutes, 102 runs were scored and 18 wickets were taken by former Surrey players in the match*. Hands up if anyone can tell me if this has ever been bettered in a County Championship match? I'm off home now to do this report, but those of you who are staying for the Pimms party have a great time.

[Editor's Note: respectfully, I think it is a slight of hand to describe Toby Roland-Jones as a former Surrey player.  He has been with Middlesex since he was a nipper and can only have acquired this rumoured Surrey pedigree as a result of playing for Sunbury (in the Surrey league), something that several Middlesex players do without really going over to the dark side.  It might be in the Surrey league, but is the place not Sunbury, Middlesex?]

On the subject of where Toby Roland-Jones started his career, on 2nd November I wrote:

"Anyone who has read or scanned the youth section pages of the last few editions of the Middlesex Annual Review will be familiar with the name 'Roland-Jones'. Toby was born in February 1988, and he has an older brother called Oliver, born in April 1985.

Since I can recall seeing his name littered about in the Reviews, I assume he started his career at Middlesex. Indeed, he represented us in the Second Eleven Championship once in each of 2008 and 2009, and made five appearances for us in the 2009 Second Eleven Trophy. However, in between times he ventured onto the dark side as he represented Surrey 2nd XI in 2009 in one Championship match and two Trophy matches, including in the match I attended at The Oval in August - against Middlesex! Surely there must be something unique about his feat of playing three Trophy matches for Middlesex, then two for Surrey including one against Middlesex, then a further two for Middlesex."

However, since he broke into the first-team it seems his month of birth has changed from February to January, so I assume February was just an estimation!

It is because of those appearances for Surrey 2nd XI - including in one match I attended - that I have always seen him as having a Surrey connection, even if it isn't as great as Scott Newman, Tim Murtagh or Pedro Collins.

Great report!

Thanks Major! It was a short but truly sweet day of play....

The party wasn't so short but very enjoyable for all those who attended...

Unless there is documentary evidence to the contrary I claim the copyright in my posting of June 9th

On a separate point when the six went into the lower pavilion it cleared the first couple of rows but hit the step and bounced back to hit an MCCC member in the mouth.

He immediately started to move into the pavilion for fist aid. Halfway up the steps he realised he had not put his jacket on, cardinal sin to enter pav without jacket.

He returned to his seat and put the jacket on before seeking assistance.

Well it made us chuckle.

I can report that damage was minimal and he soon returned to his seat.

Fist aid sounds like a very different sort of cardinal sin.

And talking of batting for both sides, apologies for my ignorance (and that of Cricket Archive) on the T-RJ & Surrey 2nds point.

Now on subject of first aid in pavilion if an ailing member needed CPR in Pav would he still need to wear jacket and tie? Would the same principal apply to any paramedics?

I can confirm that as I previously mentioned although Sunbury Cricket Club is north of the Thames they have played for decades and decades in the Surrey Championship. I know, having played for Walton-onThames my birthplace south of the river, in the Surrey Championship against that fine cricket club. Always a good game. Two excellent cricket clubs. For My club Douglas Jardine Jack Richards Monte Lynch. Sunbury Richard Johnson David Nash Adam London and Tobias Skelton Roland-Jones. The amateur clubs must feed the game. Without that the game is nothing. I had great fun competing against Ali Brown Mark Butcher(Cheam) Hollioakes and father Send/Malden Wanderers. Bicknells Guildford. Thorpe(Farnham) D Ward(Banstead) I Ward(Malden Wanderers). Great fun the main thing. I always thought Alistair Brown was the best striker of a cricket ball I have seen in a club game. Incredible. England should have used him down the order not opening.

Toby Roland-Jones is Middlesex through and through. Sunbury may happen to play in the Surrey League, but Sunbury is in Middlesex; Toby went to school in Middlesex; Toby has been with Middlesex for a decade or more.

Enough of the tongue-in-cheek Surrey references!

(And well done lads - a great win)

An excellent report and I'm delighted to have been there, and for the 2 previous days.

I was able to follow Tremlett's shot off Shaggy all the way and I can confirm that the ball did land on the roof of the pavilion. It then bounced down among the members sitting on the top tier. Although I was siting in the grandstand I was unable to follow the 2 sixes he hit into it, nor could I follow Dernbach's six into the lower tier of the pavilion.

I wasn't at Lord's for the Pollard shot and wonder how the two compare. From what I have heard and read my belief is that Tremlett's hit was the bigger.

Good report Winsky Snr. I for one would like to know the thoughts of the Captain Birdseye lookalike a couple of rows behind me on Thurs, who was'nt sure whether he was a Brownhat or a Yorkie fan.

At any event his forecast that The Middle would be 38 for 7 at close Thurs, and that Brownhats would'nt get points knocked off for slow play, proved to be wide of the mark.

He and his fellow anoraks were conspicuous by their absence Friday, presumably mugging up on their stats which were not too accurate.

Only performer for Brownhats was Tremlett whose efforts in gaining the three bowling points was squandered by the slow over-rate.

Though I guess he contributed.

Both Sunbury and Toby R-J, b. Ashford, Middlesex, are Middlesex through and through. Ask Bluey.

The reason they (Sunbury) are incarcerated in the Brownhat League is because prior to the M25 being built, travel to places like Enfield was thought to be too lengthy from their neck of the woods.

Can't see why that should be a prob now, tho I think they do play in a Middle Cup comp, but not positive on that..

In the 1970's, Surrey played three John Player League and four Second Eleven Championship matches at Sunbury, so I suppose in those days there wasn't a debate about whether it comes under Middlesex or Surrey.

One of those Second Eleven Championship matches was a draw against Middlesex, although only the scores and not how much each batsman scored are available on Cricket Archive.

That ground Jonathan is now under the M25 I believe, after which Sorry departed.

Historically, the anomaly which is today Spelthorne, was one of the original Middlesex Hundreds, of which there were six.

Goes back to the time of the Middle Saxons, and the Hundreds signified that you could raise at least a hundred men for the county in times of strife.

In more recent times, a couple of blokes called Cutler and Mote, a couple of builders on Harrow Council back in the 60's, presented a plan to the then Tory Govt,to bulldoze most of central London for motorway boxes.

Though this largely never happened, Cutler, now known if still with us, as Sir Horace, was at one time Leader of the GLC, as it was then known. A lifetime's dream realised I imagine.

His legacy and that of others involved, is less satisfactory for the punters who have to pay.

This led to the amalgamation of the Middlesex Boroughs to what we have today London Boroughs.

Spelthorne was awkward. Prob too small to be a London Borough, so was for admin purposes passed to Surrey for services, ie the polltax payers paid them. Otherwise its address and position remained the same.

It should have probably been made part of Hounslow or Hillingdon and had LB status, problem over.

There were signs near Heathrow, saying you are entering Surrey a few years back about 3 miles this side of the River.. They have since been removed and replaced by signs saying, this is Spelthorne.

So the anomaly is recognised.

The same situation occurred in the north, where Potters Bar which has the Middlesex postcode of EN, was shoved unceremoniously into Hertfordshire.

Speaking to the Sunbury Curator this morning. He said that the Sunbury team of last weekend, contained no fewer than 9 former or current Middlesex Colts.

The players obviously show their own preference.

This though this is sore point with the Slurry mafia, one of whom described them as traitors and nearly led to a punch up.

Never mind as the Post Office have just abolished Slurry, all should return to its natural order.

I don't know about "unceremoniously kicked out" of London. I believe that the first Tory plans were to make Greater London even greater than it turned out to be by including such areas as Epsom. The locals didn't fancy it so off they stayed in Surrey. I don't know whether Spelthorne and Potters Bar (and, for all I know, Dartford, Loughton and the like) were also in the plan and objected but I wouldn't be surprised.

The idea at the time was to get rod of the Labour-dominated LCC and replace it by a GLC padded out with areas unlikley to vote Labour. The greater the padding, the greater the gerrymander, oops, I mean, the greater the chance of Tory rule of London forever!

"Abolishing" all counties - Middlesex included - from 2013 on the official Postcode Address File, I see. That's the official record of the address, of course, so I dare say many will continue to include a county name when doing their Christmas cards.

I suggest that people ignore whatever the Post Office/Royal Mail come out with as their last 'great' invention, the postcode, has increased the level of gang rivalry in this country. As people who either watched The Hospital on Channel 4 last night or are familiar with Hackney will know, there is a point in Hackney where roads that are on three different postcodes (I think N1, E8 and E9) meet, and there is a big rivalry between gangs from each postcode.

I used to think that the fact that there is a point in Long Eaton where Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire meet was fascinating, but the above fact about Hackney rivals that.

As for county names, mail will often end up with the intended recipient regardless of whether the county written on the address is correct, incorrect or omitted.

You don't actually need the town either. Just put name, house number, street, postcode and it will get there.

Alternatively, leave out the town and insert the county. It gets there, I have received some from Scotland so written.

A lot of mail outs have excluded the county names for at least 20 years anyway. So what's new.

I always have and will continue to include it in my outgoing letters.

Slightly amusing though, for those who say we don't exist, to suddenly discover, that they don't either.

If it wasn't gangs over postcodes, it would be gangs over something else.

The short postcodes you quote go back many decades and were only used in the London postal area. The long, UK wide, ones date from the late sixties, I think.

I've never tried just using house number and postcode. With my writing, something would get misread, and there would be no other informatyion to fall back on. Even if you have perfect writing, you could still get one or other component wrong.

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no doubt that Surrey still exists, even if a fair chunk of it is now in London, as it has a county council (some of its council offices being in Kingston, withinb London!). Removing this particular leg is worse for counties that, so as to speak, only have one leg than for those that have several.

An article about how some people feel about Royal Mail's decision to abolish county names has appeared on BBC's website.

One of the people interviewed for the article was Russell Grant, who is Middlesex through and through and used to sponsor the Southgate Festival. He mentioned Middlesex County Cricket Club.

Your second paragragh is spot on Adelaide. There was as always a political agenda, which means more expense laden jobs for the boys, with gold plated non contributable pensions, paid for by taxation.

However, the spark was the 'motorway boxes'. Cutler and co knew there would be/and was huge opposition.

So the great plan was: apart from obsorbing the Labour run LCC since 1888 into a larger Torycentric area: was to remove obstacles to same.

Cutler on the Middlesex Council, would have to deal with them, plus Essex, Surrey, Herts, Kent and the LCC.

So, lets combine them, or at least parts of, into one, and hey presto, I, Cutler, gets the top job and negotiate with myself.

Unfortunately for Horace, he got booted out...after I think one term...so stalled a bit on the starting grid... Not that Red Ken, the replacement was any better for the punters....the poll tax just kept on agrowing...and agrowing...

And as a postscript: after wrecking South East England, Cutler removed himself from the monster he created: moved from Harrow to Chorleywood, Herts: presumably to escape the rapidly rising poll tax bill.

Chorleywood is the site of Junction 19 on the M25: guess who was an objector: you have got it in one: why dear old Horace in typical hypocritical style. On this occasion, he was overridden.

Another article about Royal Mail's suggestion that county names should no longer be included on addresses has appeared in the Guardian.

The article mentions that Middlesex have a cricket club and a university, while there is a poem which mentions many counties and the part of the poem where Middlesex are mentioned connects the county to the cricket club. Surrey aren't mentioned in the poem though!

I suppose it would be true to say that the only thing with which the county of Middlesex is now synonymous is Middlesex CCC.
