Sooty?

By Ged & All
November 4 2010

Readers have been kept in suspenders for long enough.  Here are the results of the October 2010 Photo Caption Competition, which was hard fought and well subscribed.  Read on.....

Once again we have had a superb response to this competition.  Congratulations to everyone who submitted a caption.  You can see all the entries through the story link at the bottom of this piece.

Daisy Freezing

Honourable mentions go to:

"On a scorching hot day Daisy really does not want to lose this game of strip poker!", by Barmy Kev.

"Middlesex reluctant to unveil new signing.....", by Darren Gosling.

"Look! Sooty naked!!!!", by Kimmy.

Steward to fellow stood beside him , " I'd go and tell that stunning red head to take her feet off the table but it's that cold up here my hands have frozen to the railing.", by The Diamond Ruled OK.

BUT THE WINNER IS:

"Women in the pavilion? Bah! See how it turns out!", by Jeff Coleman.

So, many congratulations to Jeff Coleman, who has won the miniscule prize.  He'll get a little something to accompany the maxiscule prize he won a few weeks ago.

And to everyone else, commiserations but also, in a way, congratulations.

There'll be another caption competition very soon.

I take it as my "Please don't expect any entries from me as I don't have a sense of humour!" comment wasn't good enough!

Not for the first time, well done Jeff.

There must be some way of getting a "bung" to the awarding committee for this game , rather like FIFA ?

Thanks folks.

You are right Kimmy, I wont be having a go at Pinky. Last I heard he was chewing some rock in Brighton.

If anyone is looking for a hint of spot-fixing just look at stanners' prediction that Middlesex would be drawn in the same 2011 Clydesdale Bank 40 group as Derbyshire, Worcestershire, Kent and Sussex, which he made two-and-a-half hours before the draw took place. All of those teams were indeed drawn in our group.

The only issue I have with this competition is that it discriminates against people who do not have a sense of humour, such as myself. Other than that, I believe everything to be fair and square.

C'mon EVERYONE enter the pinky comp

I have already done so, and I think Lower Mound will do so/has already done so today.

JW says "The only issue I have with this competition is that it discriminates against people who do not have a sense of humour"

In that case I feel this discrimintes against a number of MTWD users. To be politically correct I feel we should have a photo caption competition where the least funny answer wins.

What a self-serving request. You should be ashamed of yourself, BK.

Many thanks Ged, prize arrived this morning.

Much appreciated as a tool to help me pick through those sweet and sour moments that will surely comprise our 2011 season.

Indeed Kev , an absolutely blinding entry from JC which beat the other 97 entries with easy saw him achieve the hat trick of caption competition wins .

Any allegations that the awards committee are currently being investigated by the ICC/NSPCC/RAC/RSPCA were denied by the management .

My congratulations to Jeff on him winning yet another price, where does he store all this stash ? I reckon he boot sales it .

Perhaps the whinger brigade need reminding that Dingy Bags won the previous caption competition. JC won the fantasy team thingie.

Well done to everyone who wins competitions.

And "ya boo sucks" to everyone who complains about same.

People on MTWD indeed have many misconceptions, such as Jonathan Winsky never has a nice word to say about anyone, Jonathan Winsky doesn't like anyone born outside London, Jonathan Winsky loves slagging people off, Jonathan Winsky thinks John Simpson will never become brilliant at least one of the two facets of being a batsman-wicket-keeper, Jonathan Winsky writes about Watford just for the sake of it, Jonathan Winsky isn't really bothered whether the contents of his posts take threads off-topic, Jonathan Winsky doesn't have his own opinions, and there are probably more misconceptions than people on MTWD have.

Therefore, it was an inevitability that people would make comments along the lines of "Jeff wins everything" without first researching whether their perception is true or not.

But Jonathan wrote in the first post of this thread "Not for the first time, well done Jeff", so he is being hypocritical by claiming that it is wrong for people to say that Jeff wins everything

I meant that this award goes nicely alongside Jeff's win in the Fantasy competition. I didn't say he wins everything.

Amazingly enough JW , both Kev and myself were using irony , seen by Ged but as usual missed by your good self before going off into a long "me" post.

A lot of us do not have the time (or inclination) to sit at a pc and do a who won what percentage chart which takes into account number of competitions entered ,number of entries, prizes won and from which part of the country the sender originates.

Irony is a wonderful thing on a cold dark night , try looking out for it .

My life is full of many ironies, helped by the fact that I often see matches be dominated by one side yet that side end up ironically losing! Other ironies are:!

Although many think that I never have a nice word to say about anyone, I actually feel hurt when people take offense at my comments.

Although many think that I don't like anyone born outside London, I actually like the counties of Hampshire and Yorkshire and would be very saddened if people ceased to be born with Hampshire accents (something I have little difficulty in understanding), if Hampshire CCC ceased to exist (as some people would like to happen as revenge for comments Mark Nicholas made in the October 2010 Wisden Cricketer and if Leeds United do not (when the time is right) rejoin the elite in the Premier League. However, I admit that I instinctively give cricketers born in the South-East a headstart in my estimations of them compared to cricketers born outside the South-East.

Although many people think that I love slagging people off, it caused me immense hurt when patsy H misconstrued a comment I made and wrote "JW don't start slagging ace off".

Although many people think that I think that John Simpson will never become brilliant at least one of the two facets of being a batsman-wicket-keeper, I actually have great faith in him as I witnessed him score 131 not out off 100 balls at The Oval in August 2009 against a Surrey 2nd XI bowling attack including Toby Roland-Jones and Alex Tudor, so all he really needs to do is rediscover his batting form and improve his wicket-keeping and Middlesex would have a great player on their hands, even if Lower Mound can't see Simpson ever being county-standard.

Although many people think that I write about Watford just for the sake of it, I only write about Watford if I think that they are doing something right that Middlesex aren't (e.g. things such as putting a large emphasis on producing their own players rather than acquiring them from other clubs or countries, making supporters proud and regularly posting interviews with the players online (thanks to watfordfc.com and the subscription-only Hornets Player I know that Watford's staff take great pride in their work, which is something I need confirming that it happens at Middlesex)), although I know that people prefer me to tone down my mentions of Watford.

Although many people think that I am not really bothered whether the contents of my posts take threads off-topic, I always make an effort to not write about the state of a Test match in a county match thread, not write about Watford outside the Football chat (all teams) thread and not write about a topic that already has its own thread - and it is an irritation to me when others do such things or if we find ourselves with multiple threads on a single topic - but if I believe that something that some people might think is off-topic can actually be of relevance to a thread then I will write about that thing. Also, I prefer people not to write things that will get an off-topic reaction from me such as "England should be going into this Ashes series with players who have scored 1500 runs. First class runs. First class runs in 2010", "our resident O-CD candidate" and "JW, are you familiar with the phrase too much time on your hands?!", but in such cases I believe that it is the poster and not myself who is taking the thread off-topic.

Although many people think that I don't have my own opinions and that a lot of the things I write are influenced by Lower Mound, there are actually areas in which we disagree, such as whether Simpson has any potential (I think that one day he could be brilliant whereas Lower Mound doesn't thinks he will ever make the grade and believes the perfect word for him to be 'volunteer') and whether it is right that the club should be doing unconventional things such as visits to Dartmoor and Ypres, staging the winter camp and employing many backroom staff (I believe that it is important to keep up with what other teams are doing, whereas Lower Mound is old-fashioned in his views)

Well, I said I don't have a sense of humour, and I have proven to have walked the walk.

I take great pride in the fact that I often research whether my perceptions are true before posting them.

I will try to do worse in the future.

I am sure that photos of me taken while watching sport would be of great use for a caption competition as I can get very animated while watching sport, more so if my team are doing badly.

Although I often go on about not minding my teams laying down and dying, as soon as I step foot in the ground my attitude often changes and I can get very passionate.

However, not everyone has a clue what I look like.
