MTWD Challenge Match

MTWD no. 1

By Barmy Kev
April 1 2012

The details of this historic event were confirmed at the AGM.   I am delighted to announce Middlesex CCC will challenge a MTWD X1 in a special charity 20/20  match.

This event will not only provide an exciting cricket challenge, more importantly all proceeds (after deductions for supplying kit, hire of indoor training school for practise and the after dinner party) will go to Kev’s favourite charity.

The date of match is the 31st April as the players and staff of Middlesex have confirmed they have nothing planned for that date. The venue will be Southgate.  This is definite because when I asked a high level Committee Member to name the ground, he kept shouting at me. Walker, Walker Walker or something sounding like that.

Eion Morgan said he will return from earning mega bucks in the IPL to make a guest appearance. Although I’ve just heard he changed his mind when he found out Barmy Kev bowls a form of left arm spin.

I believe Mike Gatting will be making an appearance for Middlesex. Or is it Comeback Gatt playing for us?  I’ll get back to you on this one.

What is certain Kimmy and Jonathan Winsky will be opening our batting. Kimmy has requested Gareth Berg bowls underarm to her slowly “pretty please”. And we have made a desperate plea for Simmo not to stand up to the stumps for Winsky. As a precaution, Simmo will be searched for dangerous weapons before we start.

My worry is given obvious weaknesses in our line-up that we will be asked to bat and end up being bowled out for single figures. I asked Lower Pav for his advice and he replied Kev “I’ve told you before never judge a wicket until both teams bat on it”.

The players have waived any appearance fees. But as a concession, that day I heard the club have allowed them to post on MTWD (as you all know, posting on our Message board has banned under the player’s contractual agreement with the club). Scott Newman ( who has asked for day release from Kent)  and Antony Ireland are so looking forward to this one off opportunity.

Believe it or not, the whole of MTWD and Middlesex CCC are so excited by this momentous event. So much so when I asked Vinny for a final comment he seemed to be lost for words.    However, the Office Staff did say “we will put out a fool strength side”Bring it on!

I was told yesterday that this match has now been called off because Don Shelley is not available to score.

We might be able to sign someone from Grockles to strengthen our side. Both Bristol Rob and Mike TA1 have been seen warming up on MTWD in recent weeks.

Perhaps Bristol Rob could umpire as he told JW the other day that he was partially sighted, so well qualified.

I can confirm I have nothing planned for 31st April, so I will be able to play in this match.

The ECB have today announced that bulldogs will become 'balldogs' this season, as bulldogs will be used to retrieve any balls which go over the boundary, so I wonder if this system will be in operation in this match.

I hear Botham wasn't bad, well he might have been, but good at cricket.

A month to the day this thread was put up, I'm sure many of you are interested on the outcome of this event that should have recently occurred.

Regrettably, the match was cancelled for Health and Safety reasons. This was due to Lower Mound and Jonathan Winsky insisting they had to field at silly mid-off and silly mid on respectively and there was no insurance taken out for potential injuries and we did not have a budget for boxes for their delicate parts.

The good news is there is work in progress for a simliar event, which I will update you of in approximately 11 months time.

Pity. It would have been the only dry day in April.
