We welcome Exiled Away to the ranks of MTWD reporters as he give us his views on the last day at New Road, as the Middle are successful in a run chase that means Div. One cricket again next season.  Thanks Exiled.

A late decision was made to go to New Road, my first visit there for many years as it would be my last chance of seeing any cricket this season plus the prospect of a good days play, with a fine weather forecast. Ground firstly – well the Basil D’Oliveira stand gives a good elevated view now behind the bowler’s arm, whilst the new Graeme Hick pavilion dominates square of the wicket, being up on stilts given the well documented floods of recent years.  There are apparently plans to build a hotel on the river side of the ground – make sure you get a room on one of the higher floors! As for the game – well

Worcestershire desperately needed a win of course and to do that had to balance scoring sufficient runs with giving themselves enough time to bowl us out.  That made their slow progress somewhat surprising, although may have had something to do with a superb spell by Toby R-J from the New Road end, taking another 5 for and also 10 in the match.  A bit of resistance by Alexei Kervezee but he ran out of partners, literally in the case if Richo who was beaten by a direct hit from Steven Crook.

Target then 204 to win off minimum 47 overs.

 A lively opening spell by Richo and Russell with the new ball ensued but a careful start was necessary to set the platform for the run chase.  Sam Robson & Joe Denly gradually accelerated.  Gareth Andrews’ first delivery was hit out of the ground by Joe resulting in a box of replacements coming out.  For the last 8 over’s or so around a run a ball was needed to win.  Worcs brought back the opening bowlers in dimming light and a light drizzle, all credit to Peter Willey and Neil Bainton for not being tempted to take them off, particularly after a firm drive by Steven Crook hit Peter Willey who couldn’t get out of the way quick enough – cost us 3 runs! A 6 over cover from Neil Dexter brought the scores level then a no ball gave the Middle its first away win of the season and secured safety. An excellent way to end my season – don’t see too many final days of matches, especially away victories.  Look forward to seeing some more in 2013.
