Here is the MTWD festive competition. Hidden in the grid are 12 ex Middlesex players. You will find them horizantly, vertically and diagonally in all directions. Name them and tell me who is the odd one out.  All submissions please PM me or send to mtwdadmin@googlemail.com.  The deadline is 5th January 2013.  There will be a tie breaker question if there is a tie.  Good luck.

Apologies that the grid has come out slightly skewed. Sadly there is nothing I can do as the grid generated is not 100% compatible with Sportnetwork software. This will add to the challenge of guessing the diagonal ones. Maybe trying copying and pasting onto Word to help?

Good luck and enjoy.

Congratulations for coming up with a competition that computer literate geniuses can't get 50 out of 50 simply by googling the answers!

I am struggling here.

Can anyone confirm if Zeinab Badawi has ever played first class cricket for Middlesex.

There's 2 days before the deadline and I am receipt of 3 excellent but not entirely correct entries. There is still a chance for an outright winner or will it be a tie break finish?

Firstly here are the answers

Graham Barlow
Mike Brearley
Clive Radley
Mike Gatting
Roland Butcher
Paul Downton
Phil Edmonds
John Emburey
Mike Selvey
Jeff Thomson
Wayne Daniel
Simon Hughes

This is the famous 1981 Middlesex team that consisted of all test players against the Australian tour party. All except Simon Hughes who was a regular that year but did not play in that game.

I received 5 strong entries that all were not quite 100% correct but close. So it is a five way play off between Rod/Ed, Darren Gosling, Chunky, Jonathan Winsky and Fozzie.

The play off question is in no more than 20 words compile a message for Ramps on his return to the club. Answers by PM or e mail. You have a week to think of something. The best entry in the eyes of the panel of judges will receive a miniscule prize.

I had 11 out of 12 then more important matters had hold of me

If I were in the play off, I think I's go for "I am pleased to say that, in response to your request to bring me the head of Barmier Kev..."

I wonder who the tie-break judges are.

If they are the four MTWD mods then I assume anything too complimentary will automatically see me eliminated.

The judges will be me and Diamond ( who is more in to forgive and forget mode than me). If we are split I will seek a 3rd opinion.

Had Adelaide qualified for play offs he would have stood a good chance with his entry in my opinion.

A good judge will leave any bias or feeling he has for the case at the court room door and judge on merit alone.

Assume all you like Chunky but presume nothing.

Good luck to our 5 potential Booker Prize winners.

My guess of who is the odd one out was Simon Hughes for being the only player not to play Test cricket.

When searching for the players' names, some came to me quicker than others. It didn't take me too long to find the players whose names went across or down. For finding the other players, I scanned the whole grid to see if any letters could be put together. By the time I completed the search, I had definitely found 11, although I wasn't too sure about the final one. I saw the name 'Udal' (this can be found by using the 'U' in Roland Butcher), but could see no 'Shaun' to precede it, so I knew this was unlikely to be one of the 12 (plus Shaggy never played for England as a Middlesex player). After taking a couple of days off, I searched again and eventually found 'Phil Edmonds'. I think the reason why it took me time to find that despite it going upwards is because for some reason, seeing the letters SDNOMDELIHP going downwards didn't mean much to me, as it could be broken up into a few different plausible names, so I probably initially ignored it and moved on.

Hopefully I will be able to win the tie-break.

Jonathan I'm glad you relied on pure thinking rather than Internet feeds to achieve the result. My intention was not to make it easy. Look forward to your tie break entry along with others.

Based on the Ramps Poll on this website I'll go for..... "Welcome back Ramps - er, well, at least from 20% of us at here at MTWD!"

I'm fine with all answers on this thread. In fact, anyone feel free to place your offerings. However, the mini prize is just between the 5 qualifiers.

Last season was superb,
When the Middle finished third.
With the arrival of Ramps,
I’ve no doubt we’ll finish champs.

After much deliberation myself and Diamond have come up with a winner. We were most impressed by all entries. JW's poem was an excellent entry, well done. But the one that caught the eye most was the acronym based offering by Rod

Now you're home, live up to your name. Ramps At Middlesex Promises Runs And Knowhow Advancing Silverware Heroics.

Well done Rod. I will be in touch regarding distributing your miniscule prize.

Meanwhile if anyone else has ideas feel free to let us know.

Congratulations to Rod.

It was not like my entry was totally my own work, as Lower Mound helped me with it. Hopefully a lot of the things prophesised in the entries will come true, including Middlesex being champs.

Thanks JW, with a strengthend attack and a batting line up gaining experience I think we can definitley be champs.
