Seaxe Man reports on the Carniegie 3's Yorkshire away experience and a mainly unispired Middlesex performance.

YB40 Yorkshire v Middlesex at Headingley Carnegie June 20th

Journey

 I met the other two intrepid members of the Carnegie 3 at King's X for the 10.03 service. The train departed on time, and on Phil the Power recommendation we caught the local service to Burley and walked to the ground.

We went into the Long Room which believe me is just that, very long. Had a nice bit of roast chicken and a pint before play and went round to behind the bowlers arm before the start.

Teams

Middlesex Stirling, Malan, Denly, Robson, Rossington+, Dexter*, Berg, Rayner, Roland-Jones, Murtagh.

Summary of Middlesex Innings.

After a bright start, 40 off of 4 overs, that was the summit of the day for the Middle. Stirlo went in over 5 for a cameo 32. In over 7 Denly departed, followed by Robson in the same over for 1. Not a happy first one dayer this year for Robbo. By the close of PP1 we had progressed to 63 for 3. All bowled, either yorked or chopping on.

Remainder of overs 9 to 40. With the departure of Malan in over 9, Rosso and Dexter steadied the ship for awhile, until Dexter got an outside edge in over 17. So we had progressed from 42 for 0 to 105 for 5 in 17 overs leaving the hosts well on top.The best stand and batting of the innings followed between Rosso and Berg in a stand of 61 which ended frustatingly for the Carnegie 3 when Rosso offered a caught and bowled chance to Pyrah for 42,well played mate. This left us on 166 for 6 with 11 overs left. At that juncture completing the 40 overs looked a mite iffy. The final blow was losing Berg for a well played 43 bowled by Pyrah. Still reckon Gareth could do a job higher up the order.  His and Rossington's knocks showed more control. We managed to limp to the 40 overs mark though 5 dot balls in the final over wasn’t helpful..217 for 8.. The Carnegie 3 were of the opinion that was 30/40 short.

Yorkshire Innings.

In the event, this lasted for 17.2 overs before the promised rain set in. There had been a brief stoppage prior to that.  On the recommencing Middle required wickets for the D/L calculation to move in their favour. This did not occur and to be fair had seemed unlikely throughout as the bat was seldom passed. The hosts were under no great pressure and closed PP1 on 44 for 0. This ncluded in over 8 an over step free hit which went promptly for 6. Ollie did manage a maiden in over 13, but the damage was done.  The rain scudded in, Yorkshire left the field on 81 for 0 for the last time and were adjudged winners by 17 runs under the D/L.

Afters

The Carnegie 3 repaired back to the Travelodge. There afer dinner we had a 3 hour chat over a few beers. Lower Pav and Phil 'The Power' Taylor, both thought the batting had lacked nous in building a defendable 40 over score. The batting style could bode well for the T20 with the a
ddition of Adam Voges and England's T20 captain Eoin Morgan. The Group C Table didn't make for good reading. To use the Sky vernacular we had too few skyscrapers and too many bungalows. Over 2 produced 18 as did 27. Consolation, good company, good food in Travelodge and train journey's excellent.
