Mexican's Wave Goodbye to 20/20

We may just win

Kev reports on a 20/20 win against local rivals. We hear of some minor irritations with large crowd, something that particularly annoyed him , but end of day who really cares. We beat the Mexicans

I said never again for the last two visits of Mexicans to Lords where I left before the end. I said similar after our defeats this year against Glamorgan, Somerset and Sussex. I'm still here.

The omens not good as my "fast " Met line train is overtaken by 2 Jubilee Line ones.  At St John's Wood Station it was an uncomfortable squash for those on their once a year visit exiting, while there is a big queue of presumably regular commuters  not allowed to enter the station.

Despite a sell out, the ground is nowhere near full at the start and must add for obvious reasons loads of gaps at end. Dirtbag bowls 1st over and Gubbo is six and out. Simmo pushes on with sensible positive batting and the 50 partnership is bought up with a contribution of 7 from Mala. 58-1 from first power play we are on for 200. Haven't we been here before and it's ended in tears?

The Sorry slow bowlers kept the run rate down and Mala is caught in deep. Moggy comes out to bat 81-2 with a picture on scoreboard with our captain wearing his England shirt-disgrace he's playing for Middlesex.  Run rate is decreasing and Simmo out trying to accelerate.  Franklin next in without his Kiwi shirt being displayed. The run rate dropped dramatically. A late cameo took us from 133-3 from 17 to 184-5 helped by a 9 ball Mahmood last over.  I'm not convinced this score is enough.

Some good news Pinky beat Caesar in the dance off during the interval. Perhaps the only trophy for us all season?

Roy was out. missed it as I had an exceptionally long wait for call of nature break, there was no queue for the ladies. I missed Davies out as catch on Tavern boundary obscured from the Upper but saw on scoreboard replay Gubbins falling over in celebration. That's all Foakes as Mala catches him off leading edge. At 33-4 with Burns out this looks easy as Sorry power play is up, way behind the Vera.

Even though run rate is above 12, if Sangakara hangs around anything could happen. As he was starting to open up mighty relief when Mala caught him on boundary and he left to chant "you're only here for the money." Next danger man Mahmood was caught and bowled thanks to an Ollie juggle. Finn gets another it's 83 7 and he ends up with 3-17 to chant "Finny's too good for you". One of the Curran's out, followed by Nora, we are clapping Sorry singles as required rate is over 20 and soon over 30. With 9 balls left it’s over 36, I think we are safe. Dirtbag is batting not bowling, so definitely no chance. "We beat the Mexicans" was sung followed by "Can we play you every week". Perhaps not on reflection.

3 Positives

We beat the Mexicans

We beat the Mexicans

We beat the Mexicans

Negatives

Long queuing for toilet and transport links due to our once a year visitors

Moggy’s England shirt being displayed when batting for us.  Grrrr!

Why can’t we play even slightly close to this level more often.

Walking in the end of game chaos,i did a quick 12 person poll, asking 'Are you coming on Sunday'?
1...Why,who is playing?
2...We only come once a year to put cash into your club... lol
3... No

The rest were virually the same replies.

Oh well, great report Kev and we sent the Mexicans back south of the river defeated smiling smiley

Let's just be happy that 26,000 saw an excellent performance by the Middle and hope that some will want to return for more. My grandson really enjoyed his first match, and my fears that he would be applying for Mexican citizenship were thankfully not realised.

Having said that, and while fully accepting the need for corporate sponsorship, it was a bit annoying to be in the lower Tavern stand and have a whole area alongside us reserved as a corporate area which was practically empty at the start and barely more than half-full throughout.

Don't know where you were sitting, Kev, but I saw the ginormous queues for the Gents on the Tavern side. Strangely, the loos at the Pavillion End had no queues at all. Perhaps people frequenting the Tavern bar couldn't bear to be too far removed from it.

as it happened, my 5 minutes in the Gents were also the only time in the evening that I could hear the PA system, which is dreadful in the area of the lower Tavern nearest to the Pavillion. You would have thought that basic info such as who won the toss, which side was batting first and and the teams could be displayed on the big screens.

I am not sure whether the reason why Eoin Morgan was pictured in an England shirt rather than a Middlesex shirt was because he was not present for the photo shoot, or to distinguish him as the England limited-overs captain.

It would seem that you were always 98

But were you?

Keith's Mum says you always said the Garden of Eden was in Middlesex
