Have We Been Here Before?

I arrived at the ground a little late. I do like the Oval,  but there is something about crossing the river that always makes me a little nervous.

I met up with Phil the Power Taylor, and we took our seats opposite the pavilion. Thankfully we were 307-7 and a third batting bonus point safely in the bag.

This was virtually a new ball. However , right at the start I noticed there appeared to be variable bounce and the ball looked as though it was turning.

Last ball of a Batty over and Franklin hits it over his head for 6. Another boundary for Franklin this time off Curran. He looks in a bit of form.

Then first wicket of the day. Harris plays on and is bowled by Curran for 9. We are 323-8. There is then a missed stumping I think. Batty bowling to Roland-Jones. 

Another wicket. Franklin, who looked to be batting well, is comprehensively bowled by Batty for 32. We are 327-9.

After a little bit of a slow start it becomes the Toby Roland–Jones show. A lovely 4 past mid on . Then a 6 off the bowling of Curran going right over his head. 345-9.

Another brutal hit by Toby for 6 past mid wicket off the bowling of Pillans I think, and we are 353-9, but no batting bonus point, as we are past 110 overs and it is 3 bonus points each. Toby is simply dealing in boundaries. Murtagh then joins the party with a boundary. 373-9. Then Toby hits a huge, and I do mean huge 6 over mid wicket and the longest boundary in the ground. A glorious shot. 50 partnership comes up and we are 380-9.. Burke comes on to bowl and another boundary this time it is Murtagh. Another boundary and then a wicket. Murtagh bowled by Burke for 24. Toby Roland Jones not out for a very entertaining 44 and the 10th wicket put on a very impressive 68 runs. we score 395 and it is Lunch.

A debate as to whether 395 represents a good score. I as usual quote a very true saying. Never judge a wicket until both sides have batted on it, but I am happy. Surrey need 246 to avoid the follow on. 

After Lunch, myself and Phil take our seats a little late. Surrey struggle to get going. We have lots of appeals and near misses it seems. Murtagh and Roland Jones bowling well. Then first change as Harris comes on for Roland Jones at vauxhall end. Surrey 20-0 off 13 overs.

Ollie Rayner comes on at the pavilion end. Wicket seems to have uneven bounce and the ball is turning. I lean forward in my seat.

A wicket. Rayner bowls and Burns is caught by Malan at mid off for 19. Surrey 40-1. Sangakkara comes in and off Rayner's bowling there is a massive shout for LBW. Sangakkara survives, but he does seem a little fortunate to me.

Another wicket. Harinath out LBW  for 20 and it is Rayner again. Surrey 41-2. Surrey plod on and slowly reach 62.

Oh my goodness . The big wicket. Sangakkaraa hits a ball to cover  and is caught by Murtagh for 14. The bowler? Yes you have guessed right, Ollie Rayner again. Surrey 62-3. I mutter September 2013.  Tea 68-3

First over after tea another wicket. Davies out for 10 caught by Stirling at mid wicket off the bowling of Murtagh. Surrey 72-4.  It could have been even better. Roy dropped by Voges, I think it was in the slips. Surrey are 74-4 and wait for it, we are plus one over rate. Nearly another wicket. Harris bowling and the ball goes right through Foakes and just misses the wicket. Surrey continue rather slowly.

Glory be. Another wicket. Malan comes on to bowl and with his second ball he gets the  dangerous Roy caught Robson for 47. Surrey130-5..

This is getting better and better. Burke out for 1 LBW Roland–Jones. 130-6.

Close of Play. Surrey are 134-6.

A big day for us. However, the weather forecast does not look good for Wednesday at this moment in time. Surrey need 246 to avoid the follow on. Surely our best chance of winning is to bowl them out for under 246 and make them follow on and try and get 14 Surrey wickets tomorrow.

Thanks for report. I admit from radio view when Mala was bought on before Stirlo or Voges himself seemed desperate madness. Turned out to be inspirational

Glad to say I was there too Lower Pav and you captured everything spot on. Stunning catch from Stirling running away catching the ball coming down over his head - they really are the hardest ones to take.
14 wickets tomorrow would be very nice

good report LP,i can hear you fidgeting in your seat from here!
A boundary show by Toby and Murts sounded great entertainment.
Lets hope you dream/prediction/hope of 14 wickets come true!

Not there on day 2 but your description was excellent LP. And you were dead right about Wednesday. Day 3 weather was'nt too good either.
