Massive crowd

Rod our Edinburgh correspondent reports on another painful day. This again carries a serious MTWD health warning.

As a long distance supporter my trips are planned well in advance, so having been to Radlett, Worcester and Dublin it was now time for Old Trafford.  When I booked up in stupidly thought it might be a championship or promtion decider. How wrong can you be!

I left home at 4.45 am with the temperature on the car showing 2 degrees. All bus/train/tram connections were excellent and I arrived to find we had elected to field and that Bamber and Andersson were selected.
Bamber and TRJ opened and occasionally troubled the batsmen with lifting deliveries. At 39-0 Harry came on and promptly bowled two wides and a no ball. Once the batsman was able to reach one Davies got an edge to Simmo  to make it 49-1.
Cummins had been announced  by the PA as bowling under Barbados weather , but he too started with a no ball. However, going round the wicket got Jenkins LBW 49-2, with the bowling rate minus two.
When Bamber and TRJ returned the rate moved to minus three...but what difference will a point deduction make?
TRJ then got his 400th first class wicket to make it 88-3  and with Simmo standing up to Bamber to keep Livingstone in his crease lunch was taken at 92-3.
After lunch boundaries were coming easily  but two wickets fell in succession  to make 129 -5.
45 overs saw the introduction of Sowter who started with a  drag down dispatched for 4. That pie must have whetted Seaxe Man 's appetite since  he later on demolished the last four such offerings in the hot display at a local hostelry!
Livingstone was eventually LBW to the persistent Bamber for 84, and Bailey after a few attempts at the long handle holed out at mid on to Sowter.
The Rabbit was now bowling well and the rate up to +1 after tea. Wickets continued to fall but Croft was causing damage and brought up his 50 with a six.
Onions also joined the six club but got over confident and missed a straight paddle sweep to give Sowter deserved figures of 15.2-3-42-3. With Oinions out the PA couldn't resist saying " that's shallot ".
With about an hour to bat one source close to MTWD i. e Dingy  said he'd be happy with just four down at close. How optimistic!
Robbo edged behind but body language suggested he hadn't touched it. Gubbo and Mala also gave the cordon catches before Andersson got off the mark with an all run four.
With five overs left night watchman Cummins appeared. After being announced , one of the locals who were celebrating being champions, said never mind Cummins its more goings. How true, soon after being caught amid ships  he was LBW next ball.
Holden was out to a superb  caught and bowled that had to be confirmed by square leg. That gave Bailey his five-for and the mighty Middle finished on 39-6, still needing a few to beat their record low against Lancashire.
Talk at night revolved around when to check out of hotels and  what local attractions to visit on day 3 & 4. At least the ale was good!
