Kev reports on his exerience of returning back to Lord`s and some views on how we managed to win , with some headline ideas
Monday is my first match at Lord`s for two years. Last match here was against Derbyshire leaving Lord`s literally with a dark cloud over us. I arrive with that feeling.
I couldn`t believe at the gate there was still a thorough body and bag search for such a small crowd. Is Lord`s really a target? No such issues on my visits to Cheltenham, New Road or Hove.
Also disappointing the new Edrich and Compo stands were closed for spectators
I had time before the game to give to the Office Simmo`s September 2019 player of month, scheduled to be handed over April 2020. This the last ever trophy for MTWD
It was a feeling of relief and satisfaction when I settled in my seat to see the first ball. This lasted less than 15 minutes with us 14-3. We did recover mainly thanks to Robbie.
It was great just catching up with old faces and how they have survived and kept relatively sane through Covid.
Due to a family emergency I was not able to attend as much as I would like of the rest of the game. I was closely following much of the game remotely. It seemed to be mirroring much of earlier games we somehow lost with us dominating the best part of the first 1 and half days. Then a fight back thanks to oppositions late order batting. Familiar late order collapses from us and the opposition reaching our target with us still favourites on last day. Like with the Surrey game the difference here was TRJ.
With less reporting being done I`m losing knack of headlines. As well as the one chosen when out for a duck how abot B my Guest? Just as well Harry Came wasn`t playing.
Temporarily we were top of the league until the Worcestershire result. This at least gives us some momentum going into tail end of the season.

The amount of work being done from Tuesday onwards - essentially they're finishing off the external cladding (probably not the correct technical term) on the structures - made the closure of the stands a lot more understandable. Clearly the rush to meet deadlines wasn't so great, though, that a lot of Bank Holiday working was needed.
As for the game itself, a good performance in which (bar the first hour or so) we were generally far enough ahead to feel comfortable but not complacent.
In the first innings someone "close to me" suggested that Guest's stay had been a brief one. "He" couldn't think of anything else for the second innings.

Unless the wicket is pitched at least two strips over to the Mound Stand side, there wouldn't be a view behind the bowler's arm from that end from the corresponding stand, and that only for about 20 seats.
Middle level given over to players and match officials only, and masks to be worn whenever inside. Sad to see the Pavillion Stasi conducting random surveillance checks from the towers. What they were checking for, I've no idea, but rather worrying that the presumption of guilt and malfeasance takes precedence over the traditional "innocent until proven". As Gavin Hamilton has written, Lord's is a place full of signs telling you what you may not do and where you may not go, (and loads of people with no feel for cricket enforcing them).
On the bright side - the sun even came out as we were taking the last 6 wickets.
Plus :
Great to see that Ethan and Martin had Toby and Tim at Mid's Off and On giving them advice each over and each ball sometimes. That's a real fast bowling union at work.
Love how Martin has been able to make such an all round contribution, and how Robbie seems so organised and doesn't look out of place now batting at 4. He uses the pace of the ball so well to score down through Gulley / Third Man in the areas that Root also favours.
Never A Dal Moment..... especially when you get an (un)lucky deflection off the bowler's hand.

Most grounds search people arriving for county championship games, as do most public buildings. It is such a minor inconvenience, I now expect and welcome searches (I only disapprove of the banning of rival products to those of sponsors).
