Kev describes his Lord's experience playing walking cricket

Having played walking football at the The Hive and represented Barnet Over 50s team at a high level I was wondering if I could reach such heights for my cricket career. We did try out walking cricket at The Hive once and it just did not work out.

I heard through my walking football contacts at Swiss Cottage of walking cricket sessions at Lords Indoor Cricket School Monday mornings. Undeterred by 930 start I was happy to give this concept a go.

Good start, no bag search on entrance despite seeing the same faces at the gate.

On arrival in indoor school I noticed our first team were training. I suggested to TRJ this maybe at more his pace. He didn’t disagree.

We started off with some light training and some tips on how to bowl accurately at stumps. This was our session not the players.

The rules are quite complex and won't explain them all this time. Basically no running if you are batting bowling or fielding. The teams bat in pairs for 2 5 ball overs with -5 if you lose a wicket. Scores are for runs I mean walks and bonuses for hitting walls. There are two innings where everyone will have a bat and bowl. Some are allowed to bowl underarm

The game is played at a sedate pace.  This is inclusive with a healthy diverse feel and a mix with men and women of all senior ages.

It is non-competitve, but I do not know the meaning on the word. First session I was one of the final pair at end . Needing 12 off the last over. It was than 4 off final ball with me facing. Didn’t connect well only a single. Despite my competitive instincts I was not too disappointed and just enjoyed the friendly game.

I have been back for more. Last week we were 6 behind fielding in the last over.  Two wickets in this over ensured a one run win.

Currently, five Barnet walking football crew have attended. Numbers are growing each week and is clear this is catching on.

Surrey have a walking team and there are talks of us playing them. I'm in favour of scrapping this idea and making up a franchise.  Meanwhile, anyone out there wants to join us 9:30-12pm on a Monday for gentle exercise please feel free.

Did the firsts stop and watch you?

I think I'd feel a bit intimidated if TRJ (35 today), Simmo, and all the coaches were watching my feeble efforts. I mean, we criticise them on here from time to time, so maybe they would have felt entitled to engage in some good natured heckling!

Simmo was impressed with Rogers and Out batting technique. I'm not sure what he would have made of my wicket keeping masterclass.
